Ok, so I'm not into Bars, Taverns, Sports, etc, however, I went to a Sports Bar. Well, I had friends in town to meet up with and THEY wanted to catch the UFC PPV fight last weekend. Ramparts was one of only a few places offering it, so we went. My husband and I met up with my sister-in-law and her 2 pals from NM and a bunch of 20-somethings (6 in all . . . i think) for watching the game. My husband and I actually had diner in the restaurant part, which is really nice - separated from the bar area so that dining is much more quiet and calm. I TOTALLY loved that part! No TV's blaring anything at you, so I loved dinner. The food was great - I got some Steak Medallions or something on a sandwich and it was very tender and quite tasty. Later we went into the bar area to get a table for the big fight. It, of course was more noisy, but that is what this area was designed for. Our group kept getting bigger and bigger, but they had plenty of seating and we all gathered around one high table. Lots of hollering going on during the fights and our waiter kept our drink orders straight and was constantly checking on us, not to the point of being obnoxious, but fairly often. We rarely had to wave one down (and we were there from about 8:30 - 12:30). All in all, Great food, Great Service and fun times! We didn't know they offered reservations, but we didn't have one and it was slow enough to where we didn't need one (yea!). I have been going here for 7 years to catch Sunday NFL football games. It is in a random part of town but such a great dive bar. The service is attentive and accommodating and the food has steadily improved in taste and quality over the years. Most people aren't going here for the food but it's worth saying that the food is good. This is an all right place, nothing spectacular. I've been here a few times and each time I've gotten stars from the regulars. I get the impression that this is a townie bar/restaurant where everyone knows everyone, and people come to sit at the bar and shoot the breeze with the bartenders. Great food, efficient, friendly service, Lots of beer on tap, what more do you need for a really good nite out? Been twice. We've had sandwiches both times, burger, sloppy joe, steak and cheese, and the New York on Rye (pastrami and corned beef on marble rye). The sides were fries and house made potato chips. One appetizer, the Hot Peas. The pastrami sandwich was terrific! The marble rye was toasted, not grilled, so the sandwich wasn't at all greasy. The meats were tender, not stringy, the cheese melted but with some heft left. The saurkraut and dressing tasted very fresh. The chip were crisp, not greasy, and lightly salted. The steak sandwich had pieces of beef on a soft sub roll, with a flavorful dressing. The sloppy joe had pieces of beef in a rich and tangy tomato sauce on a bun. The burger was hand patted, dense and flavorful, the gouda and onions just the right topping. The Hot Peas are black eyed peas fried to be crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and just yummy. Service was friendly without being intrusive. Parking is on the street, or in the lot behind (shared with other stores). Nice neighborhood place. Re smoke, we're not smokers, and I am sensitive to the odor, but we didn't smell any at all. We sat facing the bar, on the far left hand side of the restaurant, toward the door. Found this place using the yelp app while on vacation with the family of 4. The app indicates closing time is at 2am, but please note that it is the adjoining, but adequately separated Bar that closes at 2am, they stop serving full menu at 11pm. We found this out as we entered the restaurant at 10:30pm. Despite our arrival so close to close, the host/waiter was very pleasant and seated us promptly at a spacious and clean booth. And everyone's food came out looking and tasting great, so the cooks clearly care about delivering quality, regardless of how close to quitting time it may be. The menu is fairly diverse, offering a variety of food ranging from bar basics like wings, burgers and fries to fancy restaurant items like, Cobb salads, NY strip and mushroom ravioli. I had the the mushroom ravioli. It was ridiculous, Highly recommend! Daughter 1: The 8oz Build your own burger. Came out exactly as ordered. It was huge and messy and delicious. Daughter 2: Salmon entree. Plated nicely, good portion, delicious. Wife: chicken cobb salad, with too many customizations to mention, but they got them all right. It was huge, like the largest portion of all the meals ordered. Tasty as well. The beer selection is as current trends demand, vast. Great locally owned restaurant! Lots of TVs in the bar area for all your game watching needs. The food was tasty and the bartenders super attentive and friendly. Thanksgiving dinner My husband and I took advantage of their special Thanksgiving three course meal with all sides. My husband selected salmon which was cooked just perfectly and tasted delicious. I went with the traditional Turkey which was nice and moist. Their included "all sides" turned out to be literal, we enjoyed a little of each, and boxed up our leftovers and pumpkin pie. It wasn't too crowded, we weren't rushed, our server was pleasant, but could have offered us some gravy when he brought our plates out. We had a good time with very good food. Afterwards, we a couple of drinks at their back bar, which we had visited so many years before. We would certainly considered another visit to Ramparts. read more

Here at Ramparts for Happy Hour. The food and drinks are cheap and TASTY. On Wednesdays, they have $0.59 wings. The Happy Hour had $3.25 drinks (draughts, liquor, and wine) and $5 plates. The wings are the best. Very quick service and friendly staff. Matt was our server. He's pretty damn awesome. I wish that the happy hour went until 8 and the parking situation was a little better. I just found out that ramparts went non-smoking. I can't possibly tell you how happy I am about that (especially now since I'm pregnant). My husband and I live within walking distance and always loved coming here. But we had to stop coming because the smoking got so intense. So we only came about once a year and even then we would only stay for a beer before we had to leave because we were coughing and hacking. So now that they are non-smoking we can start coming back on a regular basis, and I am so happy. The food is pretty good. Not on par with Carlyle or anything, but really good, decent food. The bartender is super friendly, and the live music is great. I love coming here to watch football games on Sundays too because they have all the games on various screens. Its a great little neighborhood bar I would recommend to anyone. read more

Caveat: I last went in Feb. 2009. I believe they've remodeled and expanded, so my descriptions of the inside are probably entirely inaccurate. Ramparts is essentially across the street from my house, but I don't actually go as often as I thought I would. Still, I've enjoyed it the few times I have. To be fair, one of the things I like most about it is that I can walk there. I would be a pain to drive and park most likely. Anyway, their food is rich and delicious, which really warmed me up when it was cold outside. They have both a dining area and a bar, separated by a wall with a door, so if you want to go for dinner, you aren't forced to sit with the crazy sports fans. My friends and I (a total of 5) were well attended to and had a lovely, long meal. I probably wouldn't venture in here with a group that was any larger, but that is mainly because the place as a whole just isn't that big. It is a neighborhood kind of place if you live in the area (Fairlington or Shirlington), go check it out! read more

I came here for $0.50 wings and ended up getting them with the jack daniels sauce. My coworker also got wings and a ramparts ceasar salad. Overall, we were very satisfied with the food. The wings were cooked great (ask for them to be extra crispy) and had great flavor. The waiter was very good and we got our food in 10 mins! I appreciate that Ramparts is now non-smoking since I rarely went there when it was. We live close so going to Ramparts for a quick game and wings is a plus. The food overall is typical for what you would find at a bar. It does get crowded on game day, which makes for some exciting games, so get there early if you want to grab a seat on the bar side. We usually don't have an issue getting a seat on the restaurant side the couple of times we have eaten there without watching a game I would say you never know what you're going to get with service. Sometimes it's great other times it's really bad. The last time we were there our server was usually no where to be found and after a while we noticed he had a backpack on and was heading out the door. I guess his shift ended and he didn't think we deserved to know he wouldn't be helping us anymore. read more

We had an AMAZING night at Ramparts! We've been on a streak of bad service at several other restaurants and Chuck and Anthony broke that streak with style! From the minute we sat down to the minute we left we were well attended. Never an empty glass of beer or water! They had great suggestions, and the clearance beer list didn't hurt! My boyfriend was able to drink 5 different beers he would never have tried otherwise due to the regular price! The food was great! We had the chicken nachos and the three little pigs sandwich! My grilled chicken house salad was just ok, but it was a plain order! we plan to go back often! The smoke wasn't too bad, we've been to FAR worse. The atmosphere here is not pretentious at all. I'm all for upscale dining from time to time, but I also like to sit back, relax, and just be comfortable, and Ramparts is a good place to do just that. It can get crowded on weekends, but it's usually not overcrowded -- just the right amount. I had the ribs when I ate here, on the recommendation of one of the bartenders. I hedge my bets when ordering ribs at a place that isn't known for their ribs, but they were really good here. I've had better at specialty BBQ places, but they satisfied my spontaneous craving, and I didn't regret ordering them at all, which is pretty high praise for me. To be honest, I would prefer them to any chain BBQ place I've tried, ever. My girlfriend was trying to poach most of them off of my plate, so she was a fan as well. read more

We had a party in the party room on Saturday May 21st. What is important to know is we were originally scheduled for elsewhere. When their customer service skills failed miserably we decided to find an alternate location. This was particularly difficult for us to understand because we were also regulars at that location and by regulars I mean we went almost every weekend for a few hours to watch various sporting events or even during the week for lunch. Note the past tense. What I can say is we have found a new location to now spend our time. Ramparts customer service is incredible. Riley was a fantastic server. Everyone felt he paid attention to them and even when the room was full he did a great job of taking care of everyone's needs. To include numerous individual checks. Jermaine was the chefs name I believe. He was great. He laid everything out perfectly and even went so far as to add fruit decoration and a chocolate happy birthday to our cake. And he did it all with a smile. On top of which the food was FANTASTIC!!! To all the behind the scenes staff as well that I don't know their names but I am sure helped! Thank them for us please. Heather was another person I specifically wanted to mention. While I don't believe she was working that evening, we came in the previous Sunday just to check everything out and she was the bartender. She had a very full bar and again had incredible customer service. We were sitting at a table pretty far back from the bar and she still made sure our glasses were never empty for more than a moment. Elizabeth, the GM was actually the final piece that confirmed our change in location. Her willingness and flexibility with the menu and the terrific wine list made the night so great for all of our guests. Everyone was extremely impressed! They even sent a gift card when an inexpensive pie plate was lost. This just proved to us that this is a place we want to be. I believe Ramparts just gained numerous new regulars besides just us! read more

I've gotten curbside carryout 3 times. Each time I've pulled into the designated space and before I can pull out my phone to call, a server has knocked on my window to get my name. They quickly get my food, which hot and perfectly cooked. BTW the turkey dinner is a real bargain. read more

I have to write an update to say how wonderful their Monday burger night is. You have a selection of about 10 different types of burgers and they are all half off (under $5)! I am partial to their Tex Mex burger with pepper jack and avocado. The service is efficient and I like the decor-somewhere inbetween fancy and casual. They have an extensive beer list but sometimes they are out of my desired beer (Erdinger!). The Oskar Blues Gordon IPA is pretty good. In regards to all of the Yelpers that have a problem with the smoking bar - get up and walk to the other section of Ramparts-through a door-to the non-smoking bar and restaurant. Is that difficult? The Virginia law stated that restaurants can have a smoking section as long as the ventilation system is kept separate from the non-smoking section. I am a non-smoker and I have never had a problem regarding the air quality in the restaurant section of Ramparts (which also has a bar). Another plus - Saturday they have half off their wine bottles but I haven't taken advantage of this deal yet. read more

I live down the street and had always walked past Ramparts but never went in until one fateful Monday night which all locals know is half price burger night. Wow. Amazing burgers, so many choices, and all half price. Probably the best turkey burger in town. Dining room was packed but service was great and friendly. Since then I've gone to Ramparts both the bar and dining room on average at least twice a month. Taken friends and family. A real neighborhood gem. read more

3.5 Stars. It was a nice dinner. Nothing that would have us drive out of our way to come back. First off it was empty, we were surprised by that for a Saturday. The staff was very pleasant and obviously looking for business to have something to do. The mushroom ravioli was okay. It was saucy which was nice but it lacked some umpf in the flavor. And the ravioli was kinda flavorless and doughy. The steak tips , Reubens, and side salad (large) were all very good. The rotating beers on draft were average (we love craft beers). The first time was me and my husband for dinner at the restaurant, and their steak was delicious! And we just went back for dinner again, it was a bit crowded for Monday dinner around 8:00PM (about 30min wait) so we tried their Pub/Bar section so we didn't have to wait at all. Rampart's is one of those places where I have difficulty ordering because the menu is too freaking big. Like most such establishments, they would have done better to focus their efforts on a few strengths instead of spreading out weakness. Four of us went here on a Friday night around 8pm. We were pleased we didn't have to wait for a table... but it would be a long time before we were pleased again. The place was incredibly loud, even for a Friday night, and the drunk table across from us was particularly obnoxious. Management actually seemed to be encouraging this. Appetizers ordered included French onion soup (mediocre) and nachos. The nachos had gross liquid cheese, but were otherwise okay. I had the ribs and fries for my entree. The sauce was disgustingly sweet and the ribs just okay. They clearly hadn't been cooked long enough to get good flavor. The Mister had a pasta and chicken dish he said was disgusting. The cheese, he said, tasted like sawdust and the sauce was inedible. Our friends had a salad that showed up with the wrong dressing and the pork chops. The common theme was portion sizes so large as to be vaguely disgusting. For a reason I still do not know, we ordered dessert. The apple pie was definitely better than the entrees and the ice cream was a good vanilla. The coffee we ordered with it was terrible, instant crap. With all of the options in the area and our preference for places without shouting, we probably won't be back. The prices were about average for NoVa, but the taste was definitively sub-par. read more

Maybe I was just tired from the long, eventful day my boyfriend and I had but I found this restaurant to be eh! Pros: typical bar food. Greasy and yummy. Plenty of tvs with different games going on. They made me a grilled cheese sandwich even though it isn't on their menu - thank for accomodating my craving! Staff was very friendly. Cons: my boyfriend's water glass was empty almost the entire time we sat there. We tend to judge a place on whether our glasses sit empty or if the server refills the glass before we have to ask. Beautiful and clean place. Service was amazing! Food was delicious! The shrimp with the gator sauce and grits yummy! However I got the sauce in the side it's very spicy, wings and French fries, sliders and chicken quesadillas are all amazing dishes. The dessert was even better we got the s'mores highly recommended for groups of 4 or more people ! If you like coffee than definitely get the Irish coffee:) read more

Ok, my son and I popped into Ramparts during Alexandria's restaurant week to support this local neighborhood icon! I was really dissatisfied with the experience! The first course, I chose was a watermelon gazpacho soup with a glass of Rose wine! I barely had a chance to taste my first course when dinner was served! It came with another glass of Red wine!!! I did let our waitress know however , they had us out of there in an hour flat!! I could not enjoy the whole 3 course dinner!! I have enjoyed Ramparts since 1988! We went during the reconstruction, and didn't have such a good experience, but decided to give it another shot. turns out they did a fairly decent job with the redesign. the inside looks a lot better, cleaner, while still maintaining the "taverny" feel. our food was great though! the rack of ribs were excellent, and only $13! we also tried the mushroom ravioli which were delicious. good service, and friendly staff. we'll be going back soon. read more

We went there last night. They were pretty packed and the bar was reserved for a private party. So, we sat at the bar. The bartender made what was probably the best dirty martini I have ever had. I had the chicken quesadilla which was great. It was not like a lot of places where the food tastes like it was all frozen and just put together in the kitchen. I think they actually made every part of this quesadilla from scratch and then baked it to a perfect crisp. My partner got a hamburger and it was grilled so well that the patty had actually conformed to the shape of the grill top and was perfectly done. He actually said it was the best burger her had ever had. The bar was a great idea because our service was fast, the company was nice and the food was great. I just wish they had a few more tables and a little more space. read more

Atmosphere: Ok, kind of crowded. No music playing at 8pm. Service: Extremely understaffed. The server seemed overwhelmed and was a bit inefficient. Who brings you a beer and forgets to take the empy glass away? Food: The main factor in determining the 2 star rating for this restaurant. Ordered the chicken nachos, blue cheese burger, and the tango salad. Chicken Nachos: All the chese were stuck on the bottom of the plate. I suspect they baked it first in a skillet and then flip it over and dump the whole thing onto a plate. What's the point of eating NACHO CHEESE when the CHEESE are all stuck on the bottom of the plate. Bleu Cheese Burger: Typical...meh, i've experienced better. Tango Salad: The fish was very blend, and the dressing probably came from a jar either from sysco or us foods. I can tell duerto the consistency of the dressing. Usually in restaurants like this, they make their own homemade dressing. However, the ginger dressing here is made with hydrogenated soybean oil and is made in a factory. I would say come here for the cheap booze during specials. Otherwise it's in the same league as Chilis. read more

This review is for brunch only and I have to say it's pretty tasty. The hubs and I get the steak benedict and the jack daniels filet mignon. Both are delicious. The service is bleh but not awful so no real impact. The reason the place loses a star is not really the restaurant's fault...the atmosphere here is for...how should I say this...for the "early bird special" after church. While it's lovely sometime I need a little more action with my dining experience :) Otherwise a pretty solid brunch spot. read more

This is a review of the restaurant - brunch, in particular. So here's what I'd say about Rampart's brunch - it isn't bad. As long as you aren't going in there expecting a sort of gourmet experience, then you'll probably like it. We had some eggs, pancakes, and other usual breakfast fare. All were prepared about as well as a decent diner. And frankly, we aren't crazy about the diners in the Arlington/Alexandria area. So when we're in the mood for diner-like breakfast, we'll probably head back to Ramparts brunch. Of course, given that it's a bar, it has a pretty excellent beer menu - a great bonus for someone like me who likes tasty craft beer. The service was average. Not incredibly attentive, but not totally horrible either. On early Sunday afternoon, it was pleasantly quiet and laid back. We'll be back, but not often. read more

I came to watch a World Cup game in the afternoon. The number of TVs are incredible. All bar wall is covered with TVs. The bartender was very friendly and attentive. My husband and I came here for the first time today and had the most delicious food for brunch. The breakfast potatoes were the absolute best. The service from Thomas was second to none we've had in a long time. My husband and I both agree this is our new go to spot. So many items on the menu we want to try too. Only been there once but I can't wait to go back again. The bar area has plenty of TVs for such a small space, the beer selection is great (on par with say Rustico) and what food I had was good enough. Wednesday night though is the night to go if you like wings. They have a good variety of flavors, you're surprised at the size of them (very meaty), and this night of the week they're only .35 a piece! The night we went a few weeks back our waitress kept our group of 7 people happily occupied with beverages and wings all night and got a good tip from all of us for the good service. Haven't tried the restaurant portion yet so can't comment on the higher-end of the menu. read more

We tried Ramparts tonight for dinner, mainly because we had a $10 off coupon for 2 entrees. We sat in the dining room, was very pleased of their extensive beer menu. Wine menu was decent also. Tuesday night is super supper night. We didn't get the special b/c choices of protein wasn't too exciting. I got the crab & avocado roll with $1 extra house-made onion rings. Essentially a crab cake sandwich with avocado and arugula. Crab was awesome. The roll or basic burger bun was a-OK. I was extremely disappointed with the onion rings. Breading was nice and crunch but lack seasoning. I added salt, dipped in ketchup. Still just bland. My dining partner got the cajun fish & chips. Was initially disappointed by small portion, 2 small fish pieces. Then lack of cajun-ness? sweet potatoes and cole-slaw it came with were good. Best part was dessert: warm apple tart with vanilla ice cream. YUM. Service was quick and pleasant. Dining room was nice and cozy. We might try Ramparts again for burger night.... read more
