Came to check out this new Indonesian spot for dinner on Sunday. It's a casual spot on the corner of the street. Its small but decorated well. They have a menu QR code where you order and pay from your phone. The staff is nice and there is an 18% service fee included in the bill. We got the Pempek (fish cake), pan fried noodles and turmeric fried chicken. The pan fried noodles were our favorite! Very flavorful. It looks like it was made with an instant noodle but I enjoyed it. The turmeric chicken had a nice crispy skin but I wish there was more flavor and seasoning. It came with sambal that had a lot of flavor but was a bit too spicy for me. Will try the beef rendang next time. The canned soy milk drink was perfect to go along with the meal. read more

I've never had Cassava or the Chicken Soto before, but the Soto was a nice clear soup with a strong turmeric flavor, and the Cassava were hearty and fried with a sweet dipping sauce. After the first interaction, the service took a turn to negligent, dismissive, and overtly rude. When the waiter/owner (I am guessing) came to the table for the second time, my friend made a comment about the QR code for the menu -- we are not fans of QR codes. The waiter/owner became visibly enraged, cutting her off, and making rude remarks. From that point on, he never came back to the only table in the restaurant.!!!! Yes, the cook delivered the food and the check. As you can see on the attached picture, he had the audacity to charge for "service". I was not going to leave a penny. I've been a waiter during my college years and I can let it slide most bad service, but I was not going to pay to be mistreated and have zero service. Fortunately for him, my friend is a chef and despite the uncalled rude behavior and lack of service, she was still kind and generous and wanted to leave the tip. Now, the most unfortunate aspect is the food was very good. Unfortunately, he doesn't realize that with a plethora of restaurants and a lot of very good restaurants in SF, he doesn't stand a chance with that kind of attitude. Rasa Rasa began as a food truck but has now opened a brick and mortar restaurant to showcase their bold Indonesian-inspired food! One of my favorite dishes was the Pempek, a chewy fish cake with a stuffing of hard-boiled egg, served in a sweet, savory, tangy Cuko sauce. The Gado Gado was a salad of chopped lettuce, cabbage, cucumbers, bean sprouts, carrots, tofu, and tempeh, all mixed in a creamy dressing and topped with peanuts, a sliced hard-boiled egg, and garlic chips, and served over a fried tortilla (in a nod to the taco salad). Gado Gado is usually one of my favorite Indonesian dishes, but this one lacked a strong peanut flavor in its dressing (usually my favorite component). The Chicken Soto Kediri Soup was a spiced broth (made with turmeric, lemongrass, ginger, and lime leaves) with slices of chicken, tofu, potato, and egg, served with a bowl of rice on the side; and the Beef Rendang Bowl was a dry beef curry made of huge chunks of tender beef cooked with spices and served (of all things) in a bread bowl! The dish wasn't particularly authentic in its flavor or presentation but was super creative and interesting for what it was. Finally, we had the Balado made of large shell-on prawns in a deliciously sweet and mildly spicy red chili sauce. The huge prawns were super juicy, and the sauce was addictively delicious (and made this one of my favorite dishes)! Indonesian comfort food + cozy/unpretentious setting = a great place to catch up with the homies without breaking the bank. The owner was warm and welcoming and come to find out he's from Surabaya, East Java where I used to travel for work twice a year! Sometimes those connections help elevate the experience and I definitely vibed. Between the bestie and I, we ordered the beef and fried noodles, and both the coconut rice and jasmine rice to share. Admittedly, I'm not as versed with Indonesian food and for some reason expected the coconut rice to be more...coconutty? It didn't have much coconut flavor and a little on the dry side but that being said, went well with the beef (def recommend to eat with rice) and the sauce. I'll take drier rice over wet/mushy rice any day, honestly. The jasmine rice was as expected and the fried noodles were decent. Texturally a tiny bit on the softer side but not uncommon in most asian fried noodles that I've had in the past. While it's not something I'd write home about, the flavor is balanced and the vegetables aren't overcooked. Would order again. There was a table of 6 next to us and looked like they were celebrating something and just having a blast. Low key, I really think this place is a hidden gem if you don't want to overthink, overspend, or just over it trying to find a reservation just to eat, this is the jam. We did walk-in dining on a Thursday night at 7:30pm (they don't currently take reservations) and got seated right away. Don't let the empty seats in there during peak hour convince you that it's not good because it is! I recently stopped by this spot for a late lunch during my regular day trip to San Francisco. As someone who often gets asked for recommendations on authentic Indonesian cuisine in the U.S., I'm always excited to try new Indonesian restaurants. This place was easy to spot, though finding street parking can be a bit tricky due to the busy area. I eventually found a spot about two blocks away. The décor is inviting, with plenty of greenery that gives it a fresh, casual vibe. The glossy wooden benches remind me of an upscale version of the typical Indonesian street vendors or cafeterias. The fun, quirky posters in the restroom also added a nice touch. From the moment I stepped inside, I was warmly greeted and seated right away. The staff was friendly and pointed me to the QR code for the menu, even taking the time to chat a little (and later on checked on me if I needed anything, without being intrusive). They also brought a pitcher of water to the table. I ordered the Nasi Padang Platter ($29) and Teh Kotak/Indonesian boxed Jasmine Tea ($3). The food arrived quickly, which was great since I was starving. The Nasi Padang Platter was delicious, though I'd describe it as more "Indonesian-inspired" than truly authentic, which surprised me since one of the owners is reportedly Indonesian. The rendang, for instance, was tender and savory, but it didn't quite capture the traditional flavor of Indonesian rendang. The fried chicken leg quarter was excellent, though. I was expecting a balado egg (as is common with an Indonesian rice platter), but it was served with green chili instead. Their version of corn anchovy fritter (which from the description I thought was Bakwan) wasn't typical of Indonesian cuisine either. The gulai greens needed more depth in flavor, and the green chili reminded me more of salsa verde than Padang-style green chili. Portion-wise, the platter was huge, and the price reflects that. It certainly filled me up before my red-eye flight. While I think the flavors could use some fine-tuning to better reflect the authentic Indonesian taste, the food was still very good, filling, and satisfying. If you're looking for hearty, delicious food, this place will definitely hit the spot. The service was another highlight--super friendly and personable. As I was leaving, I noticed the staff enjoying a family-style pizza lunch, and they even offered me a slice, which I politely declined after finishing my big platter. I had high hopes as I really enjoy Indonesian food and have had Indonesian food I really enjoyed before, but the Padang Platter was a huge let down. The meat was not very tender and every part in the dish had the same seasoning I felt. The beef was tough and I personally wished that the beef was slightly more saucy as well. They added these dried corn kernels but they were so dry that they really retracted from the whole taste. The same aspect for the anchovies. I could not finish the meal unfortunately. read more

First visit to Rasa Rasa, five of us started out with a trio of sambals - shrimp paste, tomato, and habanero - and a large bag of house-fried, crispy tapioca chips. All the sambals were flavorful, with varying degrees of heat, but the habanero one really sneaks up on you. Joe put together a family style Tumpeng tray of Gado-gado, padi oat crackers, Gulai greens, turmeric fried chicken, pan fried noodles with tofu, beef Rendang, yellow coconut rice, and another little bowl of sambal. The Gado-gado here was lettuce, par-cooked cabbage, cucumbers, bean sprouts, carrots, tofu, and tempeh, in a creamy peanut dressing, and came topped with peanuts, a sliced hard-boiled egg, and garlic chips. The crackers - different from the tapioca ones we were served earlier, were Padi oat crackers, Joe explained, and are made from the seeds of Melinio, a flowering plant native to East Asia, and a typical snack food of Indonesia, with a slightly bitter taste. The rendang had great flavor, and though i read some Yelp reviews saying it wasn't "authentic" (which to me probably means it's not as spicy as people would like), we loved it. My only complaint with the rendang was that I found the texture of the beef a little tough/woody. The fried chicken was fantastic, marinated in turmeric and lemongrass, moist and tender. The pan-fried egg noodles with tofu had a great, springy texture. The fragrant, yellow coconut rice may well have been my favorite thing of the evening. Also, the wonderful Gulai greens - collard greens in a curry, slowly stewed with toasted cumin and cardamom, among other things. Rasa Rasa serves no alcohol, but you can pick up anything you'd like to drink from the liquor store across the street - with no corkage fee. We were pleasantly surprised by the bill, too - $126 for dinner for five! On my second visit at lunch, I ordered the Rica Rica pork, coconut rice, and the chicken Soto Kediri soup, which comes with plain white rice. (There were plenty of leftovers to take home.) Both dishes were extraordinary in their depth of flavor. and was only mildly spicy, with a lovely, sweet tanginess. Again, my only quibble is that some bites of the meat were a bit tough (surprising, for pork belly), but overall, I'd get it again. The Soto Kediri is a traditional Indonesian chicken soup, flavored with lemongrass, turmeric, ginger, and lime leaves, with raw shredded cabbage, thinly sliced chicken, and a hardboiled egg half floating in the aromatic broth. I'd absolutely have this again as well. Warm, welcoming service, and the space is elegant yet casual and relaxing, with a street food vibe. Definitely will be back! read more

Living down the block from here, I've been eyeing this place ever since I saw the beginning of the remodeling process a few weeks ago. It's always exciting to welcome a new local business to the neighborhood! Funnily, I used to live in Mission Bay and I believe Rasa Rasa has a food truck near there -- seems like we were destined to stay neighbors! The menu at Rasa Rasa Kitchen is a little different from the food truck, but the essence is the same -- Indonesian comfort food! The ordering is all through a QR code and service charge is included, so it was pretty quick and straightforward to sit and pay and eat. We ordered the chicken satay, the javanese rice, and the beef rendang (although several other dishes like the gado gado and the noodle soup caught my eye). Everything we ordered was tasty and full of flavor, and all the food came out super fast. I loved the javanese rice, although there were small clumps of unseasoned white rice in it so it wasn't perfect. I also thought the chicken satay was very good, but a little steep at $20. The beef rendang was probably the most controversial dish of the night. It was served in a sourdough bread bowl which was an interesting choice. It kind of worked (the bread soaked up a lot of the delicious sauce), but my boyfriend and I agreed we both would've preferred it with just rice. Interestingly, I think they do have it as a rice platter for lunch, so I thought it was a little bizarre we could only order it as a bread bowl dish for dinner The servers were super friendly and the food was tasty (and Indonesian food is hard to find around the city) so I'd say this spot is a welcome addition. It's not the cheapest place and since it's new there are still some kinks that could be nailed out, but overall I feel lucky to try them out during their opening week and I will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu! read more
