I also had a bite of the bowl called, Tikka Chance of Me and the chicken wasn't marinated, just cooked. I guess I was expecting it to have more of a tikka masala flavoring. I call this Indian poke bowl! I have been waiting a long time for Rasa to finally open in Rockville. I first tried them in 2021 when the DC location was doing food drops in our neighborhood in Montgomery County. It was love at first bite. What a great concept. I love poke bowls or any other bowl like bibimbap where there are a multitude of ingredients. Now I get the bowl with Indian ingredients! I got the DIY bowl and by the end of my meal, I was satisfied and stuffed. There really is a lot you can add to your bowl. The place is colorful, sunny bright, and comfortable. I tried RASA the other day and it did not disappoint. They have a great online menu, which is easy to navigate and order, and it lists allergens and gluten free as well. I know this is kind of a weird thing to mention, but it's the first barrier to picking a restaurant if you have allergies, and RASA succeeded. The service inside the restaurant is just as friendly and helpful as the website. They were knowledgeable about allergens and cross contamination procedures. RASA has rice bowls, noodle bowls, salads and some sides. You can build your own, or order one of their pre-designed bowls. I had the Home Cooking Bowl. It came with Shrimp and Noodles, and it was absolutely delicious. My husband had the Open Sesame, which he raved about. This is a bit gateway to Indian cuisine and also chipotle style (build your own) which makes it easier for most people to try and enjoy. They even offer alcohol and dessert which sets them apart. Tried the tamarind margarita- very sweet; wasn't a fan, didn't end up finishing my drink. The chicken tikka bowl and samosa side were good, super filling- a bowl alone would be enough for a meal. I love that the samosa side came with rice. You can tell the quality of course isn't the same as if you went to a conventional sit down Indian restaurant, but it's fast food after all- think Chipotle for Indian cuisine. We ordered two rice bowls- spicy chicken and chicken tikka. The spicy chicken bowl was crazy spicy but that was the only flavor note, no other spices, the chicken tikka was so so. Came here on a Saturday for a quick lunch. Inside is sooo cute and colorful. Super clean and open. Fast service with food that packs a punch with flavor and good portion size. There is a variety of decent ingredients, which should generally be served separately, so the diner can decide what to put together on their spoon and then change it up for the next bite. Here, it is combined into a single bowl, creating a mess of flavors in every bite. It's like emptying the fridge of Indian leftovers, but there is not enough of any one thing, so it gets slopped into one bowl, and sadness follows. I used to live near RASA in Washington, DC and went there every once in awhile. I really enjoyed it at the time. However, we ordered online at this location for $7 build your own bowls and were left feeling unsatisfied. I found the food to be mediocre. The portion sizes were okay. First day open! I have been trying (and succeeding!) to lose weight, and Cava (next door to Rasa) has been my go-to salad meal for months. So I've been waiting for Rasa to open. The two are super similar; to me Rasa is a South Asian version of Cava. All good! I am a non-meat eater. My choices were three menu items or a salad. I get Cava salad all the time so I asked the worker which vegetarian item he recommended. He recommended the Eat Your Veggies, so i got that. Delicious! basmati rice | coconut ginger | sautéed spinach | charred eggplant | spring chickpeas | pickled onions | carrot slaw | corn salad | tamarind ginger chutney. I was trying to mentally compare this to a vegetarian Indian buffet. This seemed curated with a mix of really good flavors. Note they don't give you options to add other toppings (Cava does, which makes it fun!). You get the ingredients on the menu, that's it. Ordering was super quick and easy, a Cava-like assembly line. Cost was $13, maybe $1-2 dollars more than I'd like but fine. Ok value. Parking and location are good, and atmosphere is nice. Service quick and friendly. I am giving 4 rather than 5 stars because the food and experience were really good, I would not yet say exceptional. Finally tried RASA! I used to work at the Navy Yard and my coworkers would always go there for lunch. I love the decor both outside and inside. A very fun concept of make your own Indian bowl! Very fast and casual. I wanted to like it more but I didn't love it. It was very average. I made my own bowl. I got the rice and noodles and I thought they may have been too watery. The flavors were okay. It was a lot of food for ~$11 and I left very full. Lots of options to put on the bowl! Not your typical Indian fast casual restaurant that just serves butter chicken with an entire gallon of heavy cream in it. Very authentic flavors that range from South to North Indian food. Super flavorful but feels like food I could eat every day and still maintain my slim figure. The employees are really kind and helpful. Today, for the first time, I visited RASA and ordered the Tandoori Paneer Burrito. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with both the quality and taste of the meal. The so-called "paneer" was inedible--hard, rubbery, and completely tasteless, more like "rubberized" tofu than paneer. The entire dish lacked flavor: there was no masala yogurt as described on your menu, no spice, just a few chickpeas mixed with an overwhelming amount of greens. We loved here so much the first time that we went back but it wasn't as great. I should have order the same thing I did (home cooking) instead of trying something new. I had the caul me maybe which is supposed to have tofu and cauliflower. I ordered online and picked up. When I open my bowl I was looking for tofu and cauliflower but nowhere to be found. I mixed the whole bowl up trying to find something. I went back to them and showed them my bowl and I really appreciate the staff offered to give some on the side. Enjoyed my first experience at RASA! I am by no means new to Indian cuisine, but I wouldn't say I'm an expert in knowing what flavors to combine, so I was a little nervous. I decided to build my own bowl anyway and the staff was amazing at letting us have samples of the sauces before committing. They were patient despite the growing line, which I really appreciated. I ended up getting the lamb kabob, which was a little bland, though I think intentionally to let the other ingredients shine. The tomato garlic sauce was SO good. I also enjoyed the mango salsa and cumin yogurt dressing. I will say, they don't give a lot a rice like some other build your own bowl restaurants which, depending on what you prefer, may be positive or negative. I would skip the sides next time. The samosas weren't my favorite that I've ever had (though the dipping sauces were incredible) and neither was the naan. All in all, I enjoyed it and will be back! If you want a quick but delicious Indian food, this is the place for you. The place gave a up beat vibe. There are a few tables outside and plenty inside. The seating is first come, first serve. Even on their opening weekend, we didn't have any problem getting a table after getting our food. You can get one of the "We Got You" dishes or a "You Got This - build your own." We like to pick what goes in, so we both did a build your own. You choose a base (salad, rice, supergrains, and rice noodles), 1 main, sauce, 1 veggie, up to 4 toppings, and chutney/dressing. This is all for one base price. You have the option to add extras. See my photos for our combo. We both absolutely loved our choices. They also have both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. They even have soft serve ice cream. Next time, I would have to get get the soft serve. We are looking forward to our next visit (probably will be tonight. Lol.) Not for me. Too much going on. Overwhelming options. I tried to make my own bowl with shrimp which was a bad idea. Felt rushed to make a decision on something unknown. I love Indian food and this tastes nothing like authentic Indian food. The "naan" was super dry, paper thin and hard. The line was long and the staff couldn't help. Perhaps they were overwhelmed too? As long-time fans of Chef K.N. Vinod and GM Surfy Rahman's Indique/Indique Heights, my dining companion and I had been meaning to try their sons' RASA (RAhul Vinod + SAhil Rahman) for years now. No longer driving far as we used to because traffic into DC has become increasingly brutal in recent years, we were happy to finally try their newest location in Rockville super close to us. Set in the fast-casual format, the customizability (choose a base of grains/greens/half-and-half, a main, a curry sauce*, a cooked veggie, fresh/pickled/lightly-cooked veggies/fruit, a chutney*, and crunch topping) together with a diverse array of vibrant offerings are major assets, making the whole experience fun and inclusive for the full spectrum of eating styles and dietary restrictions. Our favorites include the Rice Noodles (delightful semi-al dente texture perfect for absorbing the zippy saucy ingredients) and homey Lemon Turmeric Rice for the base, Spicy Chicken (optimal blend of heat, flavor, and moisture) and Shrimp (detailed below) for the mains, and Charred Eggplant and Sauteed Spinach (a brighter rendition of the common Saag) for the cooked veggie.
