I've always driven past this place and see it when I go to Wildflour but finally caved with this whole Corona Virus going on and wanted to support small businesses. They offer SO much that's GF and that's great for my celiac daughter. I haven't had Indian food since I was a child so there were so many reasons to call them up :) was surprised to see how small the bag was for $60. (2 "meals", a side & naan) but surprisingly filled us up. Was too spicy for my daughter and the Marsala wasn't supposed to be that spicy but I understand curry is just.. different. So the kids didn't get to eat anything except some rice. We (me) ate the rest of it for breakfast the following day.. and weirdly enough I liked it better. Great Sunday lunch buffet. Food is delicious and fresh. Plenty of options to choose from including both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. There was a chicken curry, a chicken kebab, a lamb curry, and a shrimp curry served for the lunch buffet. The vegetarian options included a yellow daal, a potato curry, and a paneer and pea curry, along with a salad. You also get a fresh naan as part of the lunch buffet. I've been wanting to try Rasoi for some time now...and the anticipation was beyond justified! I went with three friends to Rasoi at 5:40pm on a Friday, and we were surprisingly immediately seated. After some serious deliberation, I ordered the Cauliflower 65 (as per hype) and the Avial, a dish that I have never heard or tried before. The Cauliflower 65 is definitively worth trying, especially for any vegans or vegetarians craving a "chicken wing"-esque appetizer. Crunchy and sweet on the outside, perfectly moist without being obnoxiously mushy on the inside, the dish made me want to reattempt cauliflower wings on my own. By no means is it healthy, but it made even the most avid veggie hater venture two whole bites! The Avial was also very flavorful and an interesting assortment of textures. I liked the plantains, green beans, and cauliflower (apparently I was on a cauliflower role), and I think the coconut milk added a much needed creaminess. Portions are not huge, but I don't mind: it's the perfect amount for a satisfying dinner. All in all, Rasoi is a great option for casual but delicious Indian meal! Excellent service and delicious food!! We had our wedding in Newport, RI recently and needed some authentic Indian desserts for our dessert display. We were unable to bring in any outside vendors except for this one for the desserts since they couldn't be made by our venue top chefs (and we wouldn't have trusted them with this!) We didnt have a cake for our wedding but instead did a ceremonial feeding of our favorite desserts and these were what we ate. I really loved the freshness flowing in every bite. Clean ambience, polite people around except for the one that served us. He had no idea about the menu or did not attempt to suggest specials. However, what got me low on the stars is the shock of authenticity of food combination. Biryani served with Dal. This is definitely not usual to do so. We absolutely loved our meal here. Although it was busy, we were able to dine at the bar and had no wait. For an appetizer, we ordered the cauliflower 65. I don't know how they get this to taste so good, and like General Tso's chicken, but they do. It's worth going here just for this. For our dinners we had the lamb chops, cooked perfectly, and the Nirvana sampler platter. For drinks, we had the coffee and pomegranate/strawberry martinis. Both were excellent. We've been visiting Rasoi since they first opened. We need our curry fix on a regular basis, so we eat at Rasoi at least once a month. For as often as we visit Rasoi, they never once disappointed us. Having eaten at Indian restaurant all over the globe, Rasoi remains our favorite. The quality and freshness of the ingredients are unsurpassed and the food is consistently excellent. There are so many wonderful dishes to try, I'd be hard pressed to point out our favorite. It all depends on what we're I the mood for. The dish we most frequently order is probably the "Bengali Lamb" - it's simply divine! It's comfort food. Rasoi is excellently managed and the staff is friendly and attentive. Still one of my top choices for Indian food in the area, and consistently good. With its success, however, the crowds and prices have gone up. Lately I've noticed that my dishes here could use a lot more heat and spice, but Rasoi is good about making adjustments to accommodate guests so I'll probably ask for dragon fire next time I'm in. The service here has always been prompt and professional and I've attended a cooking class here in the past which was enjoyable as well. Rasoi participates in social media deals/coupons so keep an eye out for them for the best deal. The restaurant itself is clean, well kept, nicely designed, and visitor friendly. Well worth a visit. Ah Rasoi: -delectable variations on Indian restaurant standards, -that insanely fantastic cauliflower appetizer (cauliflower! imagine!) -blue martinis (I love a blue martini with Asian food, shut up) -the wee cute salads that come with every meal (cucumber in teeny dice, red beans, garbanzos, matchstick carrots, and more) -free papadums! -parking lot! I am in shock that I have not written a review of Rasoi yet since this is one of my go to restaurants. Each time I go, I find another reason to love it. Here are some of the highlights. 1. The decor - clean, modern, functional. They have dividers that can be put against the wall to create a more open feeling or can be used to create separate spaces for groups. The bar in the center of the restaurant is open and draws people in without feeling like it's taking away from the space 2. The menu - symbols to indicate vegan, gluten free, vegetarian options, makes it easy to take anyone here (this is a huge plus for me who has a lot of friends who are particular about what they eat). Great selection of breads, and other dishes 3. The service - always friendly. I feel like the pace of the meal is perfect - I'm never wondering where my food is or feel like I'm rushed to finish it. I also think it must be a good place to work because the same waitstaff has been there over the course of the 4 years I have been frequenting the restaurant. 4. The deals - When you sign up for their mailing list you get a free meal in your birthday month. They also ran a puzzle promotion, where they sent each person a puzzle piece and if your piece fit one of the 5 holes in the puzzle, you would earn a gift certificate. I don't think you know how perfect this promotion was for me. I love places that are creative and appreciative. 5. The drinks - whether you get a glass of wine, a signature cocktail, or a nonalcoholic drink, you'll be happy. And the waitstaff is good about refilling the water glasses, so that you'll never be thirsty. 6.The food - of course the food has to be good to want to come back, and it always is. I've had some of their special apps which have rocked my world, but their entrees are good enough on their own. Sometimes the heat could be punched up a little, but with the choice of sides (spinach=yum) and the flavorful rice and sauces, I am always ready to come back. Okay, I gotta talk about Rasoi. I've been coming to this restaurant for about six years, and it's my go-to choice for Indian food every time. I think I've been to every Indian restaurant in the greater Providence area (and to a lot of others all over the country and the world), and every time I decide to give one of the others "one more chance," I always end up having a V8 moment (slap self in head and bark, "I coulda had Rasoi!"). Let me start by saying that on my first visit, I was not holding out much hope given the location. I knew the restaurant was a new extension of the Kabob & Curry family empire (and I do like K&C for conventional Indian fare)... but really? A Pawtucket line strip mall anchored by a Rite Aid? With a glamorous view of parked cars? Huh. Funny thing is, this unassuming strip mall houses two other terrific restaurants, Garden Grille and LJ's Barbecue... but that's for another review or two. Walking into the restaurant, I was again non-plussed. I admit, I like my Indian restaurant decor a little on the hokey side, and Rasoi is sort of minimalist-hip in a way that I don't especially like. I want tapestries, and lots of brasswork and elephants and dark wood. And traditional Hindustani or Karnatic ragas on the house sound system... not synth pop. But, I'll try anything once, and soldiered on. It's hard to know where to begin to talk about the food at Rasoi. So... let's start with the starters! Upon being seated, you'll quickly be served with papadum and the usual sambal suspects. I love these simple chickpea crackers, but really, they're just a delivery system for the sauces. The standout here is the cilantro mint sauce, which is so delicious that I am often tempted to give myself a scalp massage with it. The appetizer menu is good, but if you're a samosa fan I'd go with the potato and pea rather than the lamb (which tends to be a bit dry). But definitely try the Cauliflower 65. I don't really know what it is... well, cauliflower, obviously, but battered and fried to a wonderful crunchiness and slathered in a sweet and pungent red sauce. I've never had anything like it before, but always order it no matter who I've dragged with me to Rasoi, because it's such fun to watch it get scarfed up by my companions (there have been some mighty battles of the forks over this stuff). When it comes to entrees, Rasoi specializes in regional Indian dishes, so you're going to see items here that you've probably never seen on a menu before. My recommendation is, order based on what sounds delicious in the menu description. I have never, ever been disappointed by an entree here... and I've tried a bunch of 'em. My ONLY suggestion is that you steer away from the conventional offerings (chicken masala, tandoori, biryani, vindaloo), not because they're sub-par (they're not, they're scrumptious), but you can get good versions of these at lots of other places. Like Kabob & Curry! Get adventurous and order something weird. You will NOT be disappointed. Okay, I can't resist... gotta mention a few faves. Lamb Pasanda is finished with a sauce that's reminiscent of the cilantro mint sambal served with the papadum, but thicker, richer, creamier. It's truly sinful. The Chicken Chettinad seems to have disappeared from the menu, or else it's been renamed Chili Chicken. It's worth asking about (which I will do next time I'm there), because this is spicy Kama Sutra sex on a plate. And the oddly-named Frontier Garlic Shrimp (no, it's not mesquite grilled... must be a different frontier) will make your eyes roll back in your head. And then there are the Thalis. You see what's happening here? You're going to have to go more than once, trust me. What else? AMAZING naan selection, so good that it's hard to pick. Although I am not a big sweets fan, I kind of like to have a sweet naan to counter the spiciness of my entree (I always order things wicked hot... they will adjust all recipies to your taste), so I usually get the honey ginger or date coconut. Or both. Either one will get all the right synapses firing in your brain pan. All of the side dishes that come with your entree are exquisite, but I especially adore the masala potatoes and the sublime spinach. If you are a man or woman of valor, order a side of the Indian pickles, and prepare to have the top of your skull screwed off like a jelly jar and your head filled with lightning bolts of impossibly intense flavor. I actually hallucinated once eating these. There are some gimmicky cocktails that I haven't tried, and an okay beer and wine selection. I'm usually pretty happy with a glass or three of Sauvignon Blanc with Indian food, so I'm fine with what they offer. And there are desserts, but do you really want mango ice cream or honey-soaked munchkins when you could have one more bite of naan instead? No, I didn't think so. Just go. Really. read more

I have always had amazing experiences at Indian Restaurants however the employees @ Rasoi are NOT very friendly at all, they are actually pretty rude compared to the flourishing Indian Restaurants I have had the pleasure of dining at all over the world from Paris to Miami Beach to Tampa. I have been to Rasoi for their Lunch Buffet at least 10 times and dined at their establishment once for dinner since I live minutes away. I am a Vegetarian, their Lunch Buffet has a few Vegetarian options which surprised me compared to the cornucopia of Vegetarian dishes offered at most Indian Buffets. Please understand. I am not a very heavy eater and I am all about quality over quantity in an Indian Buffet. On the buffet they offer a desert, either mango pudding / ice cream or rice pudding, they also have Vegetable Samosas { sadly the Samosas are much better at Whole foods Market}! We just went their for dinner this evening scheduling a reservation through "Open Tabe". When we arrived the Hostess looked at her watch and rudely said " Our kitchen closes in 15 minutes. I exclaimed " So you know how to take a reservation, you just don't want to keep the reservation"! LOL. We started with an order of an order of the Naan Bread for $4 per order. For my entre I orderd MATAR PANEER (Homemade cheese & green peas cooked in creamy gravy with fenugreek leaf) for $16 which came with a small portion of Basmati Rice, extra rice cost $4 per person. I always order Reita sauce with my Indian food which cost an additional $6 per person. It really was a truly unpleasant experience being "nickeled and dimed" over every little item! Lastly we ordered a desert called GULAB JAMUN Homemade cheese balls dipped in honey syrup flavoured w/rose water $5 per person which is not a desert on the Lunch Buffet. Again I am very disappointed on the way in which the cost of very item was declared every time we added an item to our order! Every time it is the time for Indian food, I have trouble straying from Kabob & Curry. Not because I think anywhere else sucks, Kabob's saag paneer is just on the list of my ultimate comfort foods. My friend had a gift certificate to use, though, so onto Rasoi we went. It was comfortably busy when we arrived, and we sat at the bar and ordered a drink while our table was being set. Layout and lighting is great. I liked the drink menu - they had a good variety of flavors and used a nice range of liquors. I decided on a ginger cardamom martini, my friend got a mango martini. We were very happy with both flavors, not to mention that the martinis were GIANT. We ordered pretty standardly - a basket of naan, saag paneer, and dal. I liked that in addition to the main dish, we were given a choice of rice and a choice of a side. I enjoyed the food, but I didn't find it as flavorful as I wanted it to be. I like my Indian food to kick my pants off with depth and complexity of spice, but this just didn't. Also, after being really stoked for our sides, they were both kind of soggy and tasteless, as though they had been sitting on the steam table for too long. Again, it wasn't bad. But I wasn't freaking out. After reading other reviews, though, I'm thinking that I have to man up, go back, and try something else. read more

Fly and flavorful. Since day one I have been repping Rah-swah (as I like to call it) hard. Management knows how to run a business right, the food is delicious, the staff provides very accommodating service and great atmosphere to top it all off. The good: Lamb Barra Kebab. The house specialty is flavorful and tender, the lamb cooked perfectly. The bad: The samosas were disappointing, especially the ground lamb, which were generally dry and lacking in anticipated flavor. I met friends here for dinner on a weekday. The place was pretty packed but inviting. My friend who said he wasn't that hungry and cautioned us not to order too much devoured the naan, samosas and entry he ordered. So I guess he would rate the food well. Overall, I rate the experience well. Everyone's food was fresh and tasty. While I was underwhelmed by the samosas, the naan was nice and hot (while still not as good as India in the providence place mall, in my opinion) and the vindaloo was spicy but with unexpected complex flavors of tomato, cumin, cilantro and other herbs. Like all my reviews will break it in pros and cons: Pros: good decoration with a modern look that's about it. Cons: By far the worst indian food we ever had. There was not taste in any dust that we ordered. (Bhindi masala and panner makhani). The gravy was very watery. I have had way better food at other places arround. We had to eat everything with salt and paper. The waiter was confused with our order as well. When we arrived at the restaurant, the lady at the counter was kind and welcoming but that was it. The other indian guy did not even bother saying hi hello or are you waiting. It was funny that at an Indian restaurant we did not see any indian people eating. I have sampled Indian from all regions of the country, West Coast to East coast. No matter how many places I go to, Rasoi is still my favorite. They, in my most humble opinion, have the best Indian that money can buy here in the states. Authentic, flavorful, well cooked, well presented. Their chefs are phenomenal, giving such a wonderful mix and variety of tastes in Indian Culture, NOTHING on their menu is bad, NOTHING AT ALL. Their Restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and great vibe for lunch or dinner. Dinner is most preferred. Even when it's busy, it's not so loud to enjoy your experience, and not to bright to blind your time in. Rasoi has built such a great place here in Rhode Island, and I continue to see a bright future for them for years to come. Whether new to the area, or long time standing resident looking for a new place to try, this is the spot to be. If you are unsure, go down on the buffet weekend on Sunday. Two vegan friendly places in the same nondescript location in Pawtucket, RI? Yes, it is true. Only a pork-heavy BBQ joint comes between them. Garden Grille is on one side and Rasoi is on the other. So if your meat eating sweetie insists on bacon, burgers and steak, just park that lovie in the middle and go crazy next door. Not too many places around here offer a vegan brunch so when Rasoi opens their doors on Saturday, you may find me there with you. Lots of choices, so filling- I am just so happy to be sitting here with my friends and family. No, it is not fine dining and the setting is just a bore, but it's really decent food, and when you are a vegan, an all you can eat vegan brunch is a very good thing. When we had received our dishes, you can probably see in the pictures that they weren't focused on presentation as much as the quality of the food. I'm sure they're very busy which is why they didn't pay much attention to detail as far as plating goes. You will see some food marks from OUR food [not random or unwashed dishes] but we didn't mind so much. [Not really a big deal, we're not posh people. I'm just trying to be truthful here]. What will make up for that minor presentation boo-boo is that the food will more than make up for it. For the entrée selections you can choose two sides to go with your main dish. We had the Channa Masala with Mixed Vegetables and Basmati Rice, as well as the Vegetable Mango Curry with Saag and Brown Rice. Channa Masala: Your classic Indian dish that is a main staple of many Indian cuisine with the great full flavor that Rasoi did not miss on. The dish at times can be a bit dry depending on where you go, however this dish was not dry at all but very saucy tomato base. Not overly runny/watery or anything like that, but you're going to have a hearty base. Chick Peas or better known as Garbanzo beans, is the main protein item in this dish and they were well cooked. With the Chick Peas, the ingredients typically include chopped tomatoes, garlic, onions, dried mango powder, coriander seed, garam masala etc. Vegetable Mango Curry: This dish has a coconut and mango base - it is really creamy. Not as creamy as an Alfredo sauce, but with the milk of the coconut it has a delightful cream-like texture to the dish. And if you are a fan of mango then this is an entrée you need to try! It's not overbearing or an intense shock to your taste buds of mango, however you have a smooth entry to that mango flavor that combos with that coconut with makes a great taste. I really wanted to like Rasoi after a friend recommended their cauliflower 65. The cauliflower was delicious and their libations are nothing to scoff at either. Our first experience left us satisfied and confident that we had found an Indian restaurant to frequent. A week and half later, my partner and I found ourselves craving their food and there we were, anxiously waiting to devour the goodness that Rasoi once delivered. But we were confused, the service was horrible. I can't complain about the libations, because similarly to our first experience, it was perfectly made. However, that won't make up for the fact that parts of our food WERE cold. Since our waitress went on her break, no one checked on us for nearly 20 minutes. I had to get the attention of another waiter to ask how the food is prepped (eg.microwaved, fried) To my dismay, the waitress said they fried the appetizer that we ordered, but parts of it were cold? I expressed my reluctance to finish my meal but I was not met with any type of customer service to rectify the situation. My partner and I refused to order more libations and called it a night and left displeased. A week later, we decided to do take-out and order the usual entrees with the cauliflower 65. The cauliflower did not disappoint but the entrees were so spicy that we were unable to eat it. Disgruntled, we called up Rasoi to complain. They agreed that the dishes were not supposed to be spicy, apologized and offered to refund the entrees. I really really really tried to like you Rasoi, but damn you broke my heart. I never thought I'd hate an Indian restaurant and I really wanted to like this place after reading all the rave reviews but honestly the whole experience was pretty sub-par. First off, the atmosphere was akin to an upscale cafeteria.....open, loud and cold but with slightly better furniture and bright paint on the walls. It wasn't cozy and warm at all. The Bollywood music videos playing above the bar in the middle were distracting and added nothing to the vibe. Second, the service was uninspired. The guy I thought was just the busboy filling our water glasses turned out to be our server. We could barely hear him above the din of everyone around us. He didn't let us know about any specials and rarely showed his face at our table all night. Third, (and most important) the food was pretty bland and forgettable compared to other Indian food I've had. I ordered the Thali Nirvana which consisted of a variety of dishes, naan bread, rice and a dessert. I thought this would be the best way to get a feel for their food since it included two of my standard dishes: chicken tikka and saag paneer. The chicken tikka was okay....the sauce had no kick to it at all and was like plain tomato sauce mixed with watered down yogurt. The saag was terrible! It was watery and bland. The daal was also watery & bland and practically inedible. The lamb curry was the only fairly tasty dish in the bunch. However, the biggest food disappointment for me was the naan. I LOVE naan and this naan tasted like it had been made earlier in the day and warmed up in the microwave before serving....it wasn't fluffy at all and didn't have that slightly charred flavor in certain spots. Bleh! Lastly, the prices were ridiculous given the quantity and quality of food they serve up. This restaurant tries too hard to please affluent and educated whites - with its stylish furnishings, rectangular plates and artful presentation, choices of brown rice and tofu, and its timid spicing. It is overrated and overpriced. I was open-minded when we went and, in fact, chose this restaurant after a fair amount of research when I knew my son and I would be in Providence for the day. But we were both disappointed. I started with the papri chaat appetizer -- potatoes and chickpeas layered on a bed of wheat-flour wafers and covered with chutney and yogurt. The waitress warned me that it was spicy, but it wasn't. It was okay, but didn't have much flavor. It looked better than it tasted. For my main course, I ordered vegetable poriyal, described as roasted vegetables with ginger, mustard seeds and coconut. I ordered that after asking our waitress which of three vegetarian entrees that sounded good she recommended. It was boring -- a lump of vegetables that didn't taste grilled and were minimally seasoned. The rice and "lentil of the day" were forgettable. The menu said I had a choice of a vegetable or lentil of the day, but I wasn't asked which I wanted. We also ordered garlic and cilantro naan with our meal. It was remarkably bland. It tasted nothing like any naan I've ever eaten. It was dense and doughy, and tasted more like a saltine cracker than anything else. One final criticism: Rasoi advertises that it specializes in "Regional Cuisines of India," yet it says nothing on its menu about the geographic origins of most of its dishes, which seems odd. read more

This is one of my go-to restaurants in Providence/Pawtucket. I have never had a meal from here that has not surpassed my expectations. I've lived in India, and I find that they have food here that is authentic enough to meet my cravings but also many choices that are more low-key as to not inspire fear in my friends and family with limited or meek palates. There is an option for everyone- gluten, dairy, animal-product free options are not only bountiful, but delicious. The Cauliflower 65 and the Idli are my two favorite appetizers. I have too many favorite entrees to count. However, the crowning jewel of this places for me is their South Indian cuisine. It's less popular in general, but so very tasty, and at Rasoi, they do not disappoint with their offerings. Dosas are crisp and gigantic (as they should be), coconut and tomato chutneys are creamy and on point. My only complaint is that they don't add more options for the fillings, but the ones they have are wonderful. The buffets on the weekend are great values for their offerings. The ambiance is nice, as you can dress up or down and not feel out of place. I love that they have Bollywood music videos on display but not so loud that you can't have a good conversation. It's family friendly. The staff is EXTREMELY friendly and unless truly slammed, are always refilling your water or making sure everything is ok before you ask first. The prices are a little high given its location, but it's easy to overlook when the food and services you receive are pretty much perfect. read more

Delish Indian cuisine in Pawtucket! The place has a surprisingly expansive drink menu, including ample choices of house specialty cocktails, red and white wine, beer, and whiskey. Several tablemates got the Kashmir (muddled blackberries, Lillet Blanc, St. Germaine, and sparkling white wine), which looked very pretty and tasted good as well. For dinner, I got a Mango Lassi, which was sweetly refreshing and paired well with my Shrimp & Scallops Moilee with Masala Potatoes. Lots of seafood mixed with coconut milk, curry leaves, and turmeric, with a lentil side included. It was all very tasty, but I don't know why the potatoes were a side option for moilee since potatoes do not sop up liquids well and the masala clashed a bit with the flavors of the moilee. Thus, I was basically left with half a bowl of moilee after all my potatoes were gone. It was fine though: I asked them to pack it up and they gave me a very generous container of rice to go with it. It was absolutely delicious the next morning even after having been in the hotel fridge and microwaved! read more

Wow, Rasoi makes some seriously good food. I kind of don't even know how to review this place because I'm drooling a bit just thinking about it and what can you say about a restaurant that seems basically perfect? I guess my only complaint is that whenever I go here, I never have leftovers and leave completely stuffed and a bit ashamed of my greed. But it tastes so good! The menu is diverse and everything I've tried has been excellent. Honestly, I'm in a bit of a rut with Indian food and usually just get Muttar Paneer almost every time (I love it so), Rasoi got me out of my comfort one and has me eating all kinds of noms!
