I've been coming to Ray's since 2015 because I found the best barber I've ever had, Lilia! She does this magic thing of making my receding hair line look "fuller?" than it actually does... which is a miracle. Now, working from home in Astoria, and despite my fear of the train right now, I'm still heading downtown on the W to see her. In fact, it's the ONLY time I take the train. Yes, I go to those lengths (no pun intended) because not only is Lilia fabulous but all of the staff has always been warm and welcoming. I've been going to Ray's for a little over three years now and have never been disappointed. The place is always clean and comfortable with friendly, capable barbers left and right. The prices are reasonable and the service is top notch. Alex is my guy; he's always thorough, professional and makes me feel like a million bucks by the time I leave. I'm partial to him, but everyone there can hook you up. You're not going to find a better bang for your buck at a barber shop in the city and the location is close to everything. My experiences have generally been positive and my cuts have been consistent, though some of the barbers haven't been very welcoming. I have had the same barber for 16 years who was located in the Astor place area. I would never trust another Barber to cut my hair so I would spend a 10 dollar cab ride to Astor place and 10 dollar cab ride back to my Greenwich St. office evry 2 weeks. This loyalty and trust would cost me 40 every two weeks plus 2 hours with the commute and waiting time. Nonetheless, my barber of 16 years was on vaction the week I needed to get cut for a special occasion, so I was walking to grab lunch and stumbled across Ray's. I peaked in to check it out and had my reservation because I had the same guy cutting my hair for 16 years but I had no choice and walked in....well to my surprise, I was met with warmth and kindness of the staff. The owner Ray and his lovely wife wife have all the accomodation to make your visit comforting from a large screen TV, a diverse selection of assorted magazines, High plush leather seating and my favorite... candy (dum dum lolli's....blueberry). Not to mention the menu of services they offer from a fresh shave to color. Ray was my barber who gave an exception hair cut using both scissors and a buzzer for a barber shop like cut with a Haitstylist flare. I was impressed and have not been back to my former barber since. I kept saying, next time I will go back and that has never come to fruition. I am settled in at Ray's and will never look back. I have been going to Ray's now for about 3 months and have not experienced a bad hair cut or an unhappy customer. If you havent been, you must go. read more

Let me reprise my most recent visit for you. "Hi, I'd like this very specific haircut" "Okay, but that might not look good." "That's okay, I know what I want." "How about this, I do it my way and then if you don't like it, I can fix it!" So I get a haircut I never wanted and it cannot be fixed because my hair is too short now. I like this place when they cut my hair the way I want them to. But when a barber wants to do whatever he wants regardless of your request, then what's the point of asking me what I want in the first place? And the business gives away free stuff if you write a five star review, so I might not trust the ratings on this place. read more

I got a great haircut with Mark yesterday. I live on the other end of Manhattan, but figured it was worth the trip, as I always get a good haircut here. (It's near work, but I have been working from home since mid-March.) I did get a cut near home, and the guy just didn't pay attention to what I said I wanted. When the crummy haircut grew out, I knew I wanted to get it cut at Ray's. I am delighted with the result. I look better than I have since March....and they have plexi-screens between the chairs and wear masks, so it's a safe place to get a haircut. read more

Ray's is everything that you want in a neighborhood barbershop: consistency, speed and quality. I've gotten my haircut there ~10 times with a number of different barbers and have walked out happy every time with an almost identical haircut. It's a bit more expensive than other comparable places I've gone to in the city, but you get what you pay for. read more

I went in expecting to find experienced barbers, but was told by the 4 barbers on staff that they aren't able to cut my hair because they aren't skilled at cutting a black man's hair type. It was almost comical because they have black clients in the pics I politely left. read more

Subtle little details were definitely not working out in this place, an item or two at first, but then I started to notice more and more corners being cut... even a few things that are pretty much sanitation basics. I've moved a few times in the past two years (both job and residence), and as anyone knows, it's not the most convenient thing to stay with one barber over that time. Since I've been working in the city, I wanted to get my hair cut during my lunch hour and tried out Ray's this past summer. The first time I went there, I got my hair cut by a woman who no longer works there. She did a very good job and made some helpful suggestions. She wasn't there on my third trip, so I wound up having Ray (the owner) cut my hair. Ray is an excellent, no-nonsense barber who listens to what I want and executes it with perfection. With as difficult as it can be to find a good barber, Ray is worth his weight in gold! He is also very helpful and made some suggestions regarding finishing the style. I've been working in this building for over a year and finally decided to try this barber. I could kick myself for waiting. I walked in at 6 PM and waited about 10 minutes to get into a chair. I lucked out and ended up in Ray's chair. He asked me a couple of questions about how I like my hair, how often I get it cut and was there anything else I wanted him to know. I tried Ray's Barber shop when I was unable to get to my regular barber. I was very disappointed with the haircut. I am very finicky about my hair so I always take the time to explain exactly how I want it cut. The Barber at Ray's took the liberty to "reshape" my hair even after I told him that I wanted to keep the overall length. His answer was "one side was longer then the other so I had to cut it down". That made no sense to me. I told him exactly what I wanted and he didn't listen...that's why the two stars. BTW, I choose Rays because of the Yelp reviews but I noticed a sign in the shop that customers get a "free gift" if they post a positive Yelp review. Not exactly ethical if you ask me. read more

I have come here on multiple occasions purely because of convenience relative to where I live. That said, EVERY single time I go, my hair gets cut shorter then i directed. I am convinced they are extremely "scissor happy" and have no concept of what a "lite trim" means. Last time I got my haircut, I told the barber enough cutting when I felt he was going too short SEVERAL TIMES and he kept cutting!!! So disappointing. read more

I have sort of temperamental hair. It's very straight, rather thick, and somewhat coarse and I have a double-crown, that swirls in opposing directions (I'm told.) For most of my adult grooming years, I have vacillated between my desire to get a good, reliable cut in pleasant environment and my desire to get it done quick, cheap, and easy. So typically I'd find a stylist in a mid-price salon that I liked and then keep going to despite a $70 price point. Until, such time as I start to feel guilty and then I'd just start popping into any old 10 dollar joint which and taking my chances. I've been going to Ray's for all (or nearly all) of my haircuts for nearly three years because it's the perfect blend of all of those things I mentioned: It's convenient, just outside the chamber's street ACE. It's fast they have 8 chairs and there's enough turn over that I've never waited long enough to even take my coat of and sit down. It provides an aesthetically satisfying experience in that it's very clean, has great furniture, a nice bathroom, the staff are very fantasti, they don't chit chat across with each other. At the same time, they respect your potential need to not wish to make small talk-- but are polite and chatty if you engage them. It has the feel of 1930s New York in a clean, modern room. Finally, they're damned good barbers (Russian-Americans)! I know I can walk in, sit in anybody's chair, provide little instruction, and they will know how to take care of the rest. The base price for a basic cut is $20 onto which I add like a 50% tip because they deserve it! Check em out! read more

Got my hair cut here this morning. The cut itself was fine, but the service was the absolute worst I have seen in almost any regard. I didn't get my hairstylist's name, but she was a very pretty, skinny, tall, blonde woman. She was so incredibly rude the entire time. The last thing you want when someone is cutting your hair is to feel uncomfortable and I was stunned into utter silence by her condescending tone and rude commentary. Needless to say, I will never be returning here and furthermore, I hope that hairstylist gets a stern talking to, because how she acted this morning is no way to treat a client. read more

I started going to ray's a little over a year ago after I got fed up with the inconsistent quality at other fidi/Tribeca barbers. There are cheaper and closer places to my office, but ray's hardly ever has a wait, is very consistent in quality no matter who is there, and never makes you feel rushed. This place lives up to its reputation. I came as a walk-in and within one minute they had me in the chair and telling the barber what I wanted. Very fast, efficient, and skilled service. They also educate you, patiently if a little brusquely, when what you want has a certain term. I know nothing about hair styles and their names: I generally describe what I want and show a photo from Google or somewhere if it looks like what I want. I took this approach and got 90% there; I gave some feedback and got even closer. When I showed them the photo again and enlarged it, I learned that I like a "low skin fade". Next time I'll save their time and mine by going in with this catch phrase. I'll definitely return. read more

I've been going to this man's shop since my freshman yr of college, many, many moons ago. Always does an impeccable job, with patience, and is good about remembering what I like and don't like (hairline isn't what it used to be, but Ray still makes sure I look correct). Just got my 1st cut. As a walk in - ray did a great job for $15 ($18 with shampoo). Not a bad price in NYC for a cut and hot razor on my neck! That alone will have me coming back.
