This place is better than an unnamed fry place on Second Ave (which is good too tho). I'm sorry, the portions are bigger, and the fries more salty/tasty, and they do not charge for your first toppng. The malted shakes and egg creams are as good as it gets when you're looking for a vintage taste at a store that looks like it hasn't changed for decades. My mother from Brooklyn always talks about her beloved egg creams and while the hubby and I were passing through to go to the park we figured why not try this mythical city elixir. Not a fan but that's not their fault. Teeny tiny place, hardly room for more than two people to stand while ordering. No seats, cash only. We got two chocolate egg creams and a large order of Belgium fires to go and ate them in the park across the street, the fries were okay, but kind of limp and soaked in grease. Get the beignets! They are awesome. We always come here late night, often after too much to drink, which is of course the best time to consume deep fried deliciousness. We've ordered the frozen yogurt in various flavors, and Ray always fills our cup til it's overflowing. My favorite of course, are the made to order, piping hot, beignets. Ray piles them on, and does not skimp on the powdered sugar. Reminds me of New Orleans... almost. Definitely one of our neighborhood favorite spots. read more

My boyfriend and I were searching for some late night dessert and we stumbled upon Ray's while yelping. We roamed the streets of Manhattan until we came across a little hole in the wall... If I could imagine a classic New York joint, I would imagine Ray's. The walls are smothered in posters and Ray is on the other side of the counter, ancient and adorable. We split a black and white milkshake and it was POPPIN! The quality was amazing and it was somewhere around $3, which is surprising considering how expensive everything is in the big apple. Well, that's a lie - I still love both - but there's something about Ray's old-school, grungy charm that makes me keep coming back. Where else are you going to find handwritten advertisements for Obama socks next to handwritten advertisements for Belgian fries? However, it's not only the atmosphere, but the food itself that is also fantastic. So far I've had the chocolate, peanut butter, and pistachio soft serve and all were so smooth and delicious (especially the peanut butter - it tastes so real). For $3.50 I get so much yogurt! Every time I see the cup I don't think I'll finish it, and every time I do. I'll have to check out the egg creams and beignets next. And I love that they have fried Oreos. I have a major sweet tooth and this is my new favorite place! Ray is the sweetest cutest old man.... He makes me so happy just by seeing him always smiling. Besides Ray being awesome, they have some of the best beignets I've ever had! On top of that, the pistachio soft serve is amazing and so is the Oreo malt milk shake. I've lived across from this place for a year and today was my first time stopping in. I was craving frozen yogurt, and figured I'd give it a try. I was pleased to discover they sell Colombo soft serve. They have the standard vanilla and chocolate, but also have some more fun flavors like strawberry, banana, peanut butter, cappuccino and even pistachio. I tried pistachio, which was good, but ended up with a cone of cappuccino with chocolate sprinkles. It was creamy and delicious, totally hit the spot. For $3, I see this place becoming a problem. I've been going to Ray's since 1985 when I was selling fetish clothing on St. Marks. A true NYC classic and old friend, I Iove it as much now as I did then.
