This was my second time visiting the pastry box. My first visit was a pleasant experience, so I decided to come back. When I walked in, a tall male employee greeted me, which I appreciated. It's always nice to be welcomed. Before I chose what to order, I first asked if I were to get a cinnamon bun would I have the option to get it warmed up. The employee said no.That honestly surprised me because I've never been to a bakery that won't warm up a cinnamon bun or other pastries. The cinnamon bun looked extremely dry like it's been sitting there for long hours and just needed a little warm up to look ooey gooey again. A warm pastry makes a big difference, and it might be something worth considering offering in the future. Since I didn't get a chance to really look at the pastries during my first visit because I was with my child and we were in a rush that day, I took about a minute to browse the display this time literally 1 min or 2 mins the most. The shop was completely empty, so there wasn't anyone waiting behind me. While I was looking, the employee just stood there the entire time silently. Not once did he offer a recommendation, mention what was popular, or try to make conversation. Instead, when I finally decided on a large chocolate chip cookie, he gave me a look that made me feel uncomfortable. It came across as if he was thinking, "Wow, you took that long just to choose a cookie?" That's genuinely how his expression looked. It made me feel judged and rushed over something that should have been a relaxed experience. I've worked in the restaurant industry for 5 years, so I know customer service can make or break someone's experience. Even on days when conversation didn't come naturally, it was still part of the job to engage with customers, make them feel comfortable, answer questions, offer recommendations, and break the ice. Or even just asking how the persons day is going. Those small interactions go a long way in creating a welcoming atmosphere. Customers shouldn't feel judged for taking a moment to decide what they want, especially if I'm going to spend my money there, If anything, that's the perfect opportunity to connect with customers, and make them feel welcome. I hope the bakery considers encouraging employees to be more engaging and personable, because positive customer interactions are a big part of what brings people back. Unfortunately, this visit completely changed my impression of the bakery. I won't be returning because I didn't feel comfortable with the atmosphere. The staff was not necessarily "inviting" but they did answer all the questions I had politely~ everyone seemed pretty busy even well into the afternoon and the cookie definitely seemed to be the star of the show . Not sure if it was a fresh batch but there was a full tray of warm cookies and I had a nice bite. The cookie is crispy on the bottom and chewy on the top, relatively thin all throughout and very decent sized. The flavor is not bad, buttery. Not the best cookie in nyc in my opinion (I'm spoiled and biased to Orwashers right now-- can't beat that browned butter flavor they have) but it's worthy for everyone to try! Personally the highlight of the cookie for me was the texture itself, pretty addicting and highly enjoyable. I would say it's worth trying for all who are curious and consider themselves a chocolate chip cookie fanatic. I also grabbed some other pastries like the Buddha hand loaf (matcha loaf with strawberry buttercream) and the yuzu olive oil cake. First Impressions: I was soooo so excited to try this spot because it's been on my list of places to try for a long time and brought my brother and his gf who were visiting from out of town. One of the girls working at the counter seemed annoyed by my energy (I have social anxiety and yap when excited) and gave me a long, weird stare when I smiled at her, so that kind of put a damper on my energy... the other taller girl returned my smile so that was a better interaction The Noms: The huge sea salt chocolate chip cookie was the one I came for and it did not disappoint. I inhaled it so fast I went back to get another... my brother got something s'more related and that was really good! Always love to support a woman-owned, black-owned business but feel this review might be helpful. Unfortunately more like 3.75 stars for the large chocolate chip cookie ($6). I got to the small shop an hour before closing on a Saturday. It was busy, with a pop-up tent out front with people underneath. 2 high tables inside and a line of about 6 people. I realized that the lines at places are actually because the shops and restaurants are small and don't have a lot of room to wait. The line moves quickly and the staff is very nice and efficient. Pretty much every customer was very millennial and on a food tour/cookie crawl. It seems like the staff is baking cookies literally all day and the large ones were still very warm, the center very gooey, edges getting crisp. The ingredients are very high-quality - the butter, looks like two types of chips (one flat & darker) & not overly sweet - maybe not sweet actually? I just didn't taste anything. It was a cookie, but nothing about the flavors blew me away. No browned butter undertones. Not sure if it was because it was so warm & I was paying too much attention to the extremely soft center & fragile cookie. It was better the next day, the center stiffened, but the flavors were still pretty flat. The cookie is big (6-8"), but the $6 price (understandable for rent & staff) didn't match with my expectations unfortunately. There were other items in the case that were at a lower price point, but nothing else that interested me. The display counter is in an awkward spot on the side with minimal space to browse, maybe there should be a plate of samples, labeled, & priced at the front of the counter so there isn't ordering anxiety. read more

Oh my goodness walking in the spot I think I gained 100 pounds just with the sweetness in the air. The yuzu lemon cake was so moist and delicious. I can't stop thinking about it. The kitchen sink was my favorite--it was breakfast for me since it has corn flakes and rice Krispies. The black & white cookie was too sweet for me (it was my first time having it in life). I went back later that day to get the ¼ pound cookie for a coworker who has a major sweet tooth. She absolutely loved it. I went back the following week to order the kitchen sink again and the ¼ pound cookie. I see why my coworker loved it so much. The service was wonderful, she remembered me from the previous week. The owner is so pretty but she is about her business she was taking care of things. The staff she has are beautiful and so soft spoken ready to help. Little bakery serving up some unique treats. The hallmark item seems to be their chocolate chip cookies. They're razor thin and generously sprinkled with salt flakes. I jokingly dubbed them smash cookies. A fun, crispy bite. The globs of chocolate still offered some chewiness. We also tried the matcha cookie. This is a cookie for true matcha lovers. It's a bitter and vegetal cookie authentically showcasing the matcha. Could easily see this becoming a cult favorite cookie amongst Japanese tea lovers. Last but not least, was their take on an Oreo whoppie pie. We recently went on a road trip through New England where nearly every business had a whoppie pie. The Pastry Box's version is not classic, but I like what they've done. The sandwich features two crispier cookies as the outside of the sandwich along with the traditional light and airy filling. So I heard about this spot through social media and been looking to try it for the past 6 months. l was meeting up with a friend in the area and had to stop by for some cookies. I have always been enamored for patronizing dessert or pastry bakery cafes with sufficient seating as I cannot wait after a one hour fifteen minute travel time to arrive home in Queens from Manhattan for consumption. My visit to the Pastry Box was to relax into the evening as the sun was rapidly descending for day's end. Surely, it was a sobriety visit. There is very limited seating for both indoor and outdoor. Customer service is welcomingly hospitable and accommodating as we were the last customers near closing time for the day. The female server produced a sales receipt upon request which I was grateful. Business cards are available for grabs. Chocolate chip cookies $2.00 The Pastry Box has their own 2.0 version from the classic traditional chocolate chip cookie to embedded sea salt and it is very flat and extremely thin. It is rather small which fits into one's petite hands (like mine). The sea salt is not my cup of tea because it made me very dehydrated and created unnecessary hunger pangs near bedtime. Thus, I would rate my review 4.5, but Yelp does not have half stars. I absolutely love the classic chocolate chip cookie and why taint it with sea salt entirely? I am Cookie Monster from Sesame Street with an addiction. I was hoping to attain some French macaroons, but none or perhaps it was near closing. I stopped by on a weekday afternoon for their 1/4 pound chocolate chip cookie. - luckily they had batch ready 2 minutes after I stepped in, so I was able to get one straight out of the oven! I wanted to get the cinnamon roll as well but was told they only make those on Thursdays to Sundays, so I got the berry monkey bread instead (I was intrigued by the addition of berries to monkey bread). The monkey bread was just ok - the berry compote I thought was too sweet, so I'd skip this one in the future. I'd also note that prices relative to portions were pretty reasonable relative to other NYC bakeries (especially one in the East Village).
