I've been to a number of these in the Boston area but this was the first time we went to Real Seafood in Michigan. In short, amazing. The Whole Crispy Fish was off the hook!!!! My wife enjoyed the King Crab Legs, which she thought were some of the best she has ever had. From start to finish, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I've been excited to try out Real Seafood! I stopped in with a group of co-workers during happy hour. We didn't have a reservation, but we arrived early enough that it wasn't necessary. They were able to seat us right away, in the bar side for happy hour. The happy hour deals are great too! The beer selection is decent, and the cocktails sounded delicious. The food specials were also so good! My coworkers all had the fish tacos. I was disappointed that they were out of the tuna nachos, but I ordered the blackened swordfish bites instead, and I'm actually glad they were out of the nachos. I will try those another time, but I probably wouldn't have tried the swordfish otherwise. The mango-avocado salsa was absolutely delightful! The server brought bread as well, and the rolls had a bunch of really nice herbs and seeds. The ambience is really nice. I loved the high ceilings and the natural light. There are a lot of windows, so I would imagine even at night there would be a lot of light coming in from streetlights. The sun was a little intense when we first arrived, but I'd rather have the windows than not. My only real complaint is that if you're short (like me), sitting on the booth in the bar side is a little awkward. There is nothing high enough to rest your feet on, so they just kind of dangle. Next time I'll just sit in a chair instead and hope my feet reach the cross bar. I love that their happy hour actually goes until 6:00, so people have a chance to get there and have a drink after work. Dined with a reservation on a Wednesday. We were all new here. Drinks: Smoked Manhattan was a hit, Butterfly Effect was a tad sweet but the Cucumber Gimlet was better. Started with calamari and shrimp cocktail but a spicy shrimp app was brought. They fixed the order. For dinner there was a surf and turf special that included a large shrimp. 3 of us ordered but only 2 served as one came out with lobster & steak. Disappointing but still delicious. Steaks were pretty standard, nothing special but cooked to correct temps. The whole fried fish was cooked flaky and a hit. None of us cared for the soup or salad, dressing lacked flavor (tasted like oil not lemon). Overall while the meal was good I'm not sure we'll rush back. Fun having the menu on a tablet. I was in GR back in May and was wondering what was going to open up in this location. So sad because we left before their grand opening on the 24th. We made up for it by going to Real Seafood Company during our stay. Soups: Clam chowder - Classic New England white. A very busy chowder, but good chowder. Light enough to have another bowl. She crab soup - One of the best soups I've had in a long time. Corn and sweet crab. Get a bowl for each guest and savor every spoonful. Sharables: Tuna tartare - The tartare was sitting on top of a perfect square of crispy rice. Recommend this starter for sure. Jumbo crab cake - There are few places that offer this much crab. Seriously. I've been to one restaurant in downtown that I was wondering if they even put crab into their cake. This dish is worth it. Main: Miso Glazed Chilean Seabass - I really liked the ginger-soy & wasabi sauces. They added a nice kick to the dish. I was not a fan of the jasmine rice, but bok choy was fine. Crispy whole fish - Great dish served with a sweet chile sauce and cucumber salad. I did think the jasmine rice and baby bok choy were a little out of place. Paella Valenciana - 1/2 Main lobster! shrimp, mussels, clams, chicken, and chorizo sausage. A dish to impress the entire table. Desserts: Creme brulee - Classic vanilla bean. Served with a dollop of whip cream and some seasonal fruit. The sugar was coating was light and my plus one loved it. I prefer a thicker glassy shell. The custard was smooth and just right. Chocolate truffle cake - I ate all the chocolate and white chocolate mousse. The cake was a bit dense and I prefer a light dessert to end dinner. Chocolate brandy mousse - I loved this mousse. Topped with a generous amount of whipped cream and shaved dark chocolate. I wish I saved more room for the mousse. Great way to end the meal. read more

We went here because a friend was dying to have the lobster roll for lunch. She was really disappointed. She said it looked good, but was so salty she had to send it back. Real Seafood is a bit of a mixture when it comes to the vibe of the clientele... you get groups/couples who are out on a fancy date night celebrating a big anniversary. But you also get folks who walk across the street from the hotels who are in gym shorts and tennis shoes (they're likely from out of town grabbing a bite after a volleyball tournament or something similar at DeVos Convention Hall). The menu is large with something for everyone. Seafood options are great and they also offer steak. We love the starters! And they also have a wonderful wine menu - lots of options. And if you're into picture menus... they have tablets with images of all the food. The reason we dine at Real Seafood is... 1. location - we grab dinner there before going to a Broadway show - it's super convenient to the theatre and our parking ramp (Ellis) across the street. 2. customer service - during our last experience my dish wasn't great (parmesan encrusted fish (can recall which)) and it just wasn't good. I didn't say anything about it but the manager walked by and noticed I had barely touched it and asked if I liked it. I told her no and she immediately asked if she could get me anything else and comped our bill of the dish. 3. the food - the food is higher end dishes but the atmosphere is much more approachable than a Chop House or a Leos (which we also love) but Real Seafood is just a touch more casual. I was excited to check out Real Seafood to celebrate our anniversary recently. Nate and I went around 5pm on a weekday and were seated right away in the bar area. Happy hour is 4-6pm, Monday through Friday. Happy hour is only served in the bar and outdoor patio area, so we made sure to let the host know we were there for happy hour. The space is airy and classic, with a very similar vibe to Leo's. The patio is a nice size, especially for downtown, and the indoor/outdoor bar side is cool. The happy hour menu includes some great food options as well as cheap drinks. Oysters are $2.50 each for happy hour, and other food items range from $7.95 to $11.95. Drinks are $3.95 to $7.95. We ordered a dozen oysters, blackened swordfish bites, and the tuna nachos. We were offered complimentary bread and butter to start. Our server and the other staff members were great - waters were refilled constantly, plates were taken away at the right times, etc. The oysters were large and we really liked the strawberry mignonette that accompanied them, along with a lemon wedge and cocktail sauce. The oysters were an East coast variety and were super briny and salty. I got a lot of grit and some shell bits in several of mine, but the flavor was good. I probably would skip the oysters next time and get them at Leo's or Carolina Lowcountry Kitchen. The swordfish bites were perfectly tender but the spice rub on them was pretty salty. My favorite was the tuna nachos - it was a smaller portion, but the flavors made up for the size of the dish. For our main course, we got the crispy fried whole fish to share. The presentation is impressive, with the fish sitting up on its belly, surrounded by bright orange and green sauces. The seasoning on this dish was perfect, which was nice after the salty oysters and swordfish. The fish itself was flaky and perfectly cooked, with super crispy skin. The mild snapper was delicious. I really didn't care for the orange chili sauce - it was way too overpowering for the delicate fish, so I just avoided it. I don't think I'd need to order this again, but it was fun and delicious to try. Overall we had a nice experience at Real Seafood. I'd come back for happy hour again in the future, but will probably stick to Leo's downtown for seafood as it's locally owned. read more

We came here at 5:15 as a party of 3 adults hoping to get in without a reservation. During art prize. And with a baby in a stroller - and they still greeted us with a smile and found us a table! Food was delicious and since we were celebrating, had both surf and turf and the paella since we wanted lobster. All of the entrees were delicious. While I can't speak to the validity of how authentic the paella was, it tasted great and has a wide variety of seafood. Big enough to split between two people. The surf and turf was cooked perfectly. My husband said he'd come back for the complimentary bread alone! The salad and gazpacho were tasty. This is a great place for a special occasion or a more upscale dinner. Although we will probably never come here with a baby again (because of the aforementioned niceness), we are thankful that they accommodated us without making us feel bad for bringing our baby with us and had their bathroom does have a great changing table! Celebrated an anniversary dinner here. Loved the atmosphere when we first walked in. Lots of natural light, high ceilings, comfortable tables that are nicely spaced. We were seated with our 2 young kids in a large booth toward the back of the restaurant, and it was very comfortable. We started with a cocktail and oysters. The old fashioned was really good and poured table side over a larger ice cube sphere. The oysters we ordered were delicious and fresh. I ordered the crab cake entree, and the cakes were so good with nice size crab meat and not too much filler that you can encounter when ordering crab cakes. There was a nice mango salsa to go with it plus mashed potatoes and green beans. My husband got the lobster and fries. The only complaint was there wasn't enough lobster. The tail meat was sweet and tasty with the butter sauce it came with. The crab Mac n cheese was tasty and rich. Our server was very pleasant. The only complaint/comment was the it took quite a long time to get a couple cocktails. The server understood our dilemma and talked to the bartender. Maybe I'm old school but not sure if I love iPads for my meme at an upscale restaurant. Also, the music mix was a bit weird. With that being said, the dinner was very good. The atmosphere here is classy and upscale without being pretentious! There's mood lighting without being dark. The seats are very comfy. Plus I love the windows to outside with the views of towering buildings. I ordered the Surf n Turf ($56). The Petite Filet Mignon steak was cooked to perfection. It was a tender, excellent cut of beef. The Lobster tail wasn't large, but was delicious. Tender and sweet. This was the first time I've had lobster tail, outside of Lobster Rolls. I'm a fan of the combination with the steak. I added a cup of She-Crab Soup ($6). It was a slightly spicy, with a taste of the sea. It was very good. I especially liked dipping my bread in it. Speaking of the complimentary bread is soft and delicious. I don't know the herb in it, but it adds a unique and tasty edge to the bread. The Asparagus and Mashed potatoes were both good, but were the least impressive items of my meal. I finished up my meal with the Carmel Apple Bread Pudding ($10). It was spectacular. This may sound odd but it was like a slighly undercooked muffin texture wise. This may sound weird, but it was yummy times 10. The person I was with ordered the Chicken Picatta ($24). It was declared to be delicious. The service was good, but not perfect. It was super friendly. However waiting to order dessert and waiting to pay were both not short waits. Plenty of staff so not sure why! Overall a very solid 5 star review. Would I return? Absolutely, while a pricey choice it is worth it. Go ahead reward yourself and splurge. read more

Our first time dining here, noted nice restaurant ambience and professional staff. All the tables were committed, but bar seating was available. It was a beautiful evening and windows were opened so we could enjoy the fresh air and view of the city. Hubby ordered a beer and I had a glass of wine. We enjoyed the tasty herb garlic bread with salted butter. The oysters on the half shell were delicious and I enjoyed the horseradish and strawberry sauce accompaniment. The clam chowder was tasty and had a meaty flavor reminiscent from a ham bone albeit the broth was slightly too salty. That was kind of the theme for the rest of the night. Delicious food, but too salty. In fact the salt heavy seasoning eclipsed our meals rather than enhancing the flavors of their inventive sauces. That was too bad, because the octopus and chicken piccata were tender and cooked to perfection. I would have loved to know what the sauces were meant to taste like with it. Instead, I left feeling a bit thirsty. Good thing we were sitting at the bar! Plenty of refills available. The restaurant was beautiful and the food was well conceived. Wanted to end my birthday month with a seafood restaurant. Looked up and found this gem. We parked at the structure for Anyway Grand and walked the 4 minutes to the restaurant. There is a parking lot out front of the restaurant but was packed for 7pm on Saturday. On Our way down we called and asked to make reservations. We were told that we had to be present to make a reservation. When we arrived we were told that we could have called to make a reservation and the next seating was at 8pm. I was disappointed but took the reservation and had drinks locally while we waited for them to call. The bar at the restaurant was packed so we didn't stay. We showed back up at 7:50pm, were greeted and sat promptly. I had asked when we made the reservation for the wine room but we were sat at a 6 person table instead. The waitress Rebecca was training so we had two people helping us. Both were polite, professional and helpednus navigate the menu that was in a tablet. Very cool! Our drink order was taken right away. I ordered a port and my husband had an old fashioned. We ordered the cauliflower and a dozen oysters to start. Cauliflower came out first. It had an amazing sauce and taste to it. That really was a good addition to our meal. Latray of oysters arrived cold, cracked and fresher than fresh. I really enjoyed all the little extras example lemons, bloody Mary dip, horse radish dip, just to name a few. It was a great kicker to the chilled seafood plateau that came with event more extras. I enjoyed that a wait staff came to the table to crack the lobster and put everything back on display with the meat accessable to eat. It was very aesthetically pleasing to the eye.I kept putting the tablet up next to the dishes to see if the pictures matched and they did. This place was incredible. It smelled my ice, large, restroom was clean and well stocked. The prices are set well for the quality of food you get. Been a while since we hit above $200 for dinner. I ended the night with a Delicious espresso martini with Bailey's and my husband had calamari. I did not have anymore room to eat but if I could of I would of. We absolutely loved our dinner and the experience. With reservations, we were seated promptly (they were fairly busy). Our meal was outstanding. Started with classic clam chowder and salad. Fish entrees were prepared nicely. Very fresh. We like classic seafood menus. We don't like weird (referring to the previous review from the person who wants surprises - that's not us!). The only reason they'd get a 1 and not a zero is the waiter, while new, was the only good thing. We mentioned up front that the one and only time we'd been was years earlier and that the entire experience was bad...so he was gonna try to rectify that. To start I had a pour of Eagle Rare. They don't put prices on there digital menus but buyer beware it was $27/pour!! The bottle is $45 and everywhere so you will get taken advantage of. We followed his recommendations on the main course. I mentioned Halibut is my favorite dish from Leo' so he recommended I compare them. He came over after two bites he noticed I had my fork down. Undercooked risotto paired with massively overcooked fish lead to a dry crunchy (rice) made it inedible. My guest took two bites we had him remove it. He asked how I liked it but my head shake was epic. No manager bothered to stop by and see if our meal was ok or anything. The prices on the digital menu were lower than the bill on a couple items, including the fish I had returned mostly untouched (plus the gross overprice on a 1.5oz pour going for$ 9-11 elsewhere) made the finish a slap in the face. If you want seafood and Leo's is booked, go to long john silvers...at least it'll be edible with no hidden pricing! read more

Whenever I am in downtown and want fresh seafood, this is my favorite. Sweet and sour crispy whole fish, yum. Head on is fine with me. If you don't like eyes staring back and you, then any other fish on their menu is fillet. Their crab cakes are full of crabs, not filler. You won't be disappointed. Very disappointing service and food. The She Crab soup was more like a broth and had a few minute pieces of crab. A cup is only half a cup. Martini served in champagne glass. Again not even 1/2 full, more like a 1/3 of the glass. We ordered the Crab Cake appetizer and the full dinner came out which they corrected. The Crab Cake was very good but all the portions were extremely small. Bread (3 pieces for the 3 of us) were about 1/3 the size of a typical roll. Will definitely not be going back there. What a terrible experience. Took my wife here for her 50th birthday on New Year's Eve. Understandably it was very busy. We sat at the bar and my wife ordered a specialty cocktail. When the Drake came out, it looked completely different and it didn't look anything like the picture. She questioned why it looked different, wrote stemware, and she asked where was the flower garnish. They proceeded to tell her that the flowers looked bad and they weren't putting the flower in the drinks that night. But as we sat there, we watched four or five other drinks that were the same drink as hers be delivered with the correct stemware and a much more beautiful presentation including the flower. We brought it up to the bartender and all the bartender could say was "oh". After that, we clearly got the message. We were not wanted there and we left. read more

A few things about this restaurant. First, my girlfriend had the smoked salmon and she said it was delicious. She also had the butterfly effect cocktail which was also good. Nice presentation that went with it. I had the seafood Alfredo. It was good but I wasn't offered any black pepper to go with it and I seen another table offered it. I could've asked for it as well so it wasn't a big deal but it definitely would've made my meal a lot better. I had a classic Negroni not on the menu and it came out just okay. We both ordered the crab Mac and cheese and it was amazing. That was definitely the highlight of the meal. The interior is nice and I also like that I can see the kitchen from the table. I really enjoy the atmosphere here. It comes off as classy and intimidating until you are seated, and then the servers make you feel super comfortable and chill. The food was really good. We started out with the octopus which was really good. I ended up getting the Crab Stuffed Salmon and that was just okay. My friend got the Seafood Alfredo and reported that it was good - it was a large portion. They have a large wine list and our server was helpful in choosing which to get. Service was great, and Alan answered all the questions we had! The seafood tasted fresh and crab cake was juicy. Cocktails were well balanced and smooth. Oyster shooter was not the typical shooter I'm used to were the vodka is chilled, making it not as enjoyable. The cons of this place were pretty surprising. I am not sure if they knew, but the music they were playing was from Spotify with ads, so every once in awhile we would hear ads for juicy steak Pattie's and other random ones. Kind of took away from the ambience. One of the shrimps in the Paella had the poop vein at the top, and we were told it was okay to eat. It was just really off putting and we didn't want to risk potential poop in our mouths in case the bottom was missed. We also had the wrong paella delivered to us, but the mistake was quickly rectified and it only took 3-4 minutes for my actual dish to come out to us which was amazing. The food was delicious and other than those little hiccups everything was great. Two visits in one week, it's been THAT good! We've been once for dinner, and once for happy hour! I don't normally go crazy for restaurants. I've been around the GR food scene for sometime and have tried most everywhere once. That being said, this place has knocked it out of the park! Cocktails are pricy at dinner (around $11-12) but very delicious and premium liquor. Happy hour cuts them to $8. The dinner menu is amazing and it's fun they have a separate happy hour menu most only available at that time. The fish we've had has been fresh and delicious. Made reservations for an early dinner (5:15pm) on a Tuesday using Resy and had lots of time slots available. We were seated at a large booth that was set for 6 but was very roomy for the four of us. The interior of Real Seafood is so pretty and open! Very classic but not stuffy. I love the natural light! They do have a nice patio but we opted for inside. I love that the menus are on tablets and that every item has a picture - i will say that some pictures made items look larger than they were in person (example: the octopus app). Our server was Rachel and she did a great job - very personable, attentive, and fun personality. We started with the octopus, crab cakes and fresh oysters. Octopus was much smaller in person that what the picture on the tablet showed, but it was delicious - the sauce was so good. Crab cakes had lots of real crab and not a lot of filler - very good! The fresh oyster selection was nice! not a lot of frills with the oysters - just lemon, hot sauce and cocktail. I had 3 that had shell chunks floating around.. but they tasted very fresh. I had the crab stuffed salmon - portion size was good but would have liked more of the crab stuffing! Very good! The seafood alfredo was VERY rich! A very robust butter taste. Lots of chunks of salmon! Scallop Risotto was very very good. Clam chowder was very good, not the BEST I have had, but still very good. Caesar salad did need a little more dressing. Desserts were a huge hit! Banana pudding Cheesecake was SO good. Tasted like a bananas foster cheesecake. Chocolate Truffle Cake was so rich and decadent - huge piece! Coconut cream pie - very big and very unique! The tartness was just what it needed. My ONLY complaint about the wine selection was that there was no bubbles by the glass! Otherwise they have a nice wine selection, small cocktail menu but have pretty much anything you wanted to create any cocktail you wanted. They have lots of seating, and a whole second level - you could close it off for a private event, too. They do have a private room downstairs, as well. Let me start by saying I'm a fan of Main Street Ventures (they own Chop House and Palio's as well as Real Seafood) I can't count the number of outstanding meals I've had at both so I was excited to try their seafood brand. I don't know whether I dined too soon after opening (approx. 2 -3weeks) or what but know that there is an excellent seafood place approximately 700 steps to the south where my future seafood meals will be enjoyed. We arrived at our reservation time and was shown to bar seating contrary to our reservation. We asked for another table and were given the table right behind the hostess desk and told, "we get complaints on this table because of an air vent right above and because of the location". Despite there being open tables throughout the restaurant that stayed that way our entire meal, we took the table offered. My seat was facing west during sunset and I had to leave and go to the parking garage across the street to get my sunglasses as the light was blinding. Our server came and introduced herself and another person that she was "training". The ladies ordered wine only to be told they were out of their first choice-no big deal, there were a couple other acceptable options. My friend and I ordered beer only to find it was delivered at least room temperature without even the hint of being chilled. When we finally got our servers attention, she mentioned they were having problems with the draft beer. Really-why did you serve it then? We then ordered bottles that were cold as expected. My wife and I ordered the sea bass. Food was luke warm at best but seemed to have the potential of being quite good. Our clam chowder was also served below temperature. An issue here is at most restaurants of this calibre, if another server sees you looking for your server, they usually stop and ask if they can help you. Not here. Our server who was supposedly training someone was likely training in the art of customer avoidance. Never did she stop by to ask how things were. I looked over at other tables and saw bread which we were never offered. As I finished my last bites of sea bass, I saw the trainee and asked why we didn't get any bread. He brought it promptly and said we could have it for desert. Ironically, the bread was warm, just out of the oven and extremely tasty. All these issues could have been easily resolved with an attentive server-the kind that work at the other Mainstreet Venture restaurants. I have a thing about getting too worked up especially when dining with friends. The event is sharing time together with the meal secondary. At these price points however, I expected much better. I have no doubt things will get better. Just hated being a guinea pig. read more

Real Seafoods happy hour is iconic, it is so worth it to check it out. If you hit the patio, it's nicely shaded and the service was really nice. I loved the craft cocktails, as a gin girl, the cocktails were balanced and fruity. I ordered the cherry blossom and the Par 5, it was the best thing I've ever sipped on.
