This small, assuming storefront is one of the best hidden gems and bakeries in the city. They have some of the best sweet pastries I've ever had! - First of all, their chocolate chip toffee cookie is among the best I've had in the city. - I also love their strawberry shortcake bar. It was decadent, had great texture and great strawberry flavor. - Their midnight banana bread was also delicious, with a subtle banana flavor coming through and pairing very nicely with the rich chocolate flavor. - The corn Oreo was a very interesting rendition of the classic treat and honestly worked pretty well. When I went, there was no line since they had just opened and the service moved efficiently through their small store. While there is no room inside to eat, there is a park nearby where you can grab a seat and enjoy their delicious baked goods. read more

Ordered a cake for my birthday but they did not make it right. It was definitely a chocolate cake but you can even tell just by looking at it that the real one looks pretty sad compared to the website image. There was no salted chocolate pudding in the cake at all even thought it's the "lil pudding cake." In addition, the cake wasn't anything special as is, just a standard taste you can probably buy better from the Whole Foods bakery. I also tried to message them through the website to let them know about the mess up but nobody ever got back to me. read more

Can we truly talk about the best cinnamon rolls in the city if we do not mention Red Gate? As a lover of the cinnies, this place has been recommended to me in print and by WOM. Loves: + The OG cinnamon roll was fluffy and warm + The choco toffee cookie, also highly raved about, was soft and delightful + No line on a Thursday when they opened Notes: - OG cinnamon rolls are sold on Wednesdays & Thursdays while they do special ones on weekends - The cinnamon roll is sweeter than I expected and too sweet for me personally. The cookie however was the right level. - Be mindful if you have nut allergies. I was not expecting the choco toffee cookie to have almond in it but alas, it does. Red Gate is solid and make some interesting things (eg. pickled PB&J, ferreroll cinnamon bun). I'll have to come back! read more

Finally came in for a breakfast treat on my birthday! I've tried to come here many times, but have found them closed but had luck on a weekday morning (not sure if hours change around a lot or maybe I'm bad at planning?) The cinnamon bun is unbeatable. Soft and fresh and brown buttery and decadent. Correct frosting to bun ratio. Even better the next day after a few seconds in the microwave. I also tried the regular oreo, which was incredible, I want to try there other flavors (I think I saw a matcha oreo). There was an incredible variety of desserts in the case and the staff was very kind and it was cool to see all the baking going on right there behind the counter. I've had a few cinnamon rolls across town lately and this place ranks near the very top. The flavors change so look at their IG page before hand. The first and best bun I've had from here was a rhubarb custard cinnamon bun. The flavors change was unique and that alone made it stand out. It wasn't too sweet. Only note was it could have been a little more moist. But I've since come back and had other flavors that were also good. There isn't really room to sit or even stand around to take it to go or to a park near by. The service is fast and there is never a line. Really a great secret place if they have an interesting bun flavor I would stop by. read more

Only had the midnight banana bread but it was so SO GOOD. I think around $5 for a slice, a loaf may be $25ish. Tasted like a very thick, moist, decadent, chocolate cake with frosting. If you love chocolate cake then definitely try this! There is a small amount of seating, we were lucky to snag a table outside. read more

The cookies here are out of this world--sweet, crispy, and incredibly flavorful. I'll admit, I was a little hesitant when I first arrived. I came later in the day, and the flavors I usually gravitate toward were already sold out. With less than a 10-hour itinerary in New York City, this stop initially didn't feel like it would make the cut. But after multiple flight delays heading back to Florida, this bakery became my must-try wish. I only regret not coming earlier. I ended up getting the Peanut Butter Miso cookie, and wow...I wish I had bought the last two. When I went back for another, they were already sold out. If I'm ever back in New York City, I have to return here. No question. read more

I was excited to try a bakery I haven't been to. On my way back home I made a stop at Red Gate. There was no wait and lots of options were available. The cookies looked a little dry to me so I opted for a rich and moist cake loaf. Two flavors - chocolate banana bread and pumpkin olive oil loaf. I tried the pumpkin first and it was insanely sweet. Mind you I got home and made a tea to go with the baked goods but I still couldn't handle the sweetness. After a few bites I gave up. The texture was great but sugar level is too high. WHEN: Thur @12:30pm When I cam here the first time, they were already out of their infamous CHOCOLATE TOFFEE COOKIE ($4), which is the only reason I made the long trek for! So I came back later that week, only a bit earlier in the day, and snagged up on! The cookie was good, and even better warmed up. But sadly, I do not really taste the toffee bits. Saw a line. I stood in line. The decision was good. Cookies are crispy and chewy just the way I like them. Prices aren't too bad at around $5.00 per cookie. My partner ordered a lime bar, and it was not too sweet and not too tart. I am not too fond of overly sweet goods, and I was pleasantly surprised at how controlled the sugar level here was. Anything here would pair well with a hot cocoa, coffee, tea, damn it, even water. read more

I've seen this bakery often and finally had a chance to visit. There was no wait when I went during the middle of the day. I ordered the PB miso and the chocolate toffee cookie. The PB Miso was my favorite. It was a great combination of salty and sweet. I've definitely heard they usually have long lines. It's a small shop with only one table for seating outside. Really soft and chewy cookies and overall have always heard good things about all their baked goods. read more

This was a little bit of a letdown for me since I've heard so many good things about the pastries here. Came on a Saturday afternoon and although there was a line out the door (keep in mind. It is extremely small and there) it did move fast since there are no tables or really any places to wait once you get your pastry. I ordered a slice of the carrot cake and my friends ordered a bagel cookie and the brownie and specifically speaking for the carrot cake, it was very dry to the point that I didn't even finish half of it because not even the icing could save it from how dry the cake was. I asked my friends how their pastries were, and they also were not amazed by them and thought it was a little try as well. I don't know if it was just an off day or what was going on, but I was very disappointed and do not think I will be rushing back here. read more

Ok I want to give it a 4 but based on 2 items I had I can't. 4.5 for the bagel cookie!!! I love the sweet & savoury mix of this!!! 2.5 for the matcha oreo. I liked the match strong flavour ... but the super crunchy cookie and the thickness was not for me. That's probably a me thing ... Nice staff. I'm happy to come try more things though! read more

Back again! I had been thinking about the brown butter blondies since the last time I had come in and was really craving it. These truly were a dream. The nutty flavor from the brown butter paired with the pecans and brown sugar was truly to die for. Blondies always have felt like they were missing something and thats because they were - they need brown butter. Simply perfection. The confetti cooking was the brightest thing in the show case so naturally I need one. It was delicious as well. A soft buttery cookie covered in sprinkles - how could you go wrong. The spiced and ice oatmeal cookie had the perfect oatmeal cookie texture. It was slightly too spiced for me personally, but it really was the whole package. The oreo unfortunately was a miss. It tasted stale to me unfortunately. I will be back for more of those delicious blondies ! I came in on a Wednesday around lunchtime and I was the only customer in the bakery. Red gate has some of the best pastries! We truly enjoyed their seasonal options, which were the pumpkin loaf, it was extremely the frosting was amazing. The banana bread was also a huge hit. The cream cheese frosting was unlike anything I've had before. One of the best bakeries in the east village!!! Have previously tried their cookies which were pretty decent. read more

WOW THIS PLACE IS SO GOOD. I don't really dig thin cookies but this one was perfectly sweet and salty and chewy and soft. Not that gooey but that's okay. Def one of my top in the city. The midnight banana bread was SO moist and decadent and chocolatey. I loved it. I've also tried one of their rhubarb cinnamon buns and it was good. Super soft and fluffy I'm not sure it was the best I've ever had but it was good. Would love to try other flavors. The staff here is always so lovely and friendly. Beware they do sell out of items almost daily - so come early. Super cool that they have a specialty bun and cake every week. read more

One of my favorite bakeries. They deserve the high praise they receive... and yes...that chocolate chip cookie is legit. Everything here is good, I really don't think you can go wrong. Carrot cake loaf is insane. As well as any of their rotating bar options. The only thing that is just so/so is the oreo, there are more delicious options. The staff isn't particularly friendly but they seem stressed and I get it. Interior is small but clean. Recommend! read more

Ordered an assortment of bars and cookies from Red Gate Bakery for an office celebration. It was easy to order ahead and schedule a delivery window - the goods showed up right in time and they were all packaged nicely. I tried each of the 4 bars currently offered. The brown butter bar was my favorite of the 4. The Pickled PBJ tasted like a PBJ sandwich - it was really good. The chocolate caramel brownie was too rich for my taste. Their cookies are thin but big. All of the flavors were a big hit except the bagel cookie which was hit & miss with our group - some people really liked it where as others were appalled. I personally liked it. Their homemade Oreos have a burnt taste at first and we're pretty good - very well done and dark. I would order other items from here again. read more

One of my all time favorite bakeries in NYC! I have tried most of their treats and you really can't go wrong with anything from here. Their treats range from classic to creative and are always executed to the highest degree. If I had to pick favorites though, I'd say the midnight banana bread, malted lime bar and caramel brownie. I recently worked with them on a custom birthday cake and the whole process was so easy and seamless. Greg was a pleasure to work with and really took my favorite flavors and ran with them. Together we decided on a brown butter banana cake, with salted caramel filling, cream cheese frosting and covered in cinnamon and sugar. It was oh so tasty! They also do a special cake flavor by the slice as well as a specialty cinnamon roll on the weekend. It's hard to resist going once I see the flavor - every week is better than the last. I must try the Dubai chocolate cake slice soon. I run there anytime they have anything corn flavored too. Red Gate Bakery keep doing what you're doing, we love you and appreciate you. read more

Went for the toffee chip and they didn't have it but did get the pumpkin spice olive oil loaf cake and the peanut butter miso cookie. LOVED the pumpkin loaf but still think hani's is my favorite. Cookie was fine but nothing to write home about for me. Very subtle peanut butter and miso flavor and too thin for me. The smell emanating from this bakery is HEAVENLY though. read more

Its a matter of preference FOR sure bc i am not a tates cookies type supporter, but yea confused by that award. Red Gate Bakery is a small bakery with just enough space for a small line. The service is fast, so you're in and out in 10 minutes, even with a small line. The Choco-Toffee Coffee was fresh out of the oven. There was plenty of chocolate, but I didn't get much of the toffee. The Bagel Cookie was pretty warm too. It felt like I was biting into the child of a cookie and an everything bagel. read more

One of my favorite bakeries in the city. The brown butter toffee chocolate chip cookies are excellent. Great chewy crunchy cookies finished with flaky sea salt. The chocolate they use is very good, not too sweet and not too bitter. I have not tried the layer cakes but they look incredible. I have tried the cinnamon roll, and also excellent. Perfect amount of frosting and lots of buttery cinnamon goo. Definitely get there early because the cookies sell out quickly because of their recent ranking as number 1. read more

4/5 stars only because they sold out of their corn cake 30 minutes after opening (no kidding i was lined up before opening and got to the ordering counter at 10:30am. ANYWAY maybe they didnt anticipate so many people yearning for this cake so I guess i'll just go back.. twist my arm! The cookies were both great texture but i would prefer a crunch maybe just as my cookie preference. I need to try some other things to give them a more fair rating but cookies alone this is where they sit for me but it all looked spectacular read more

Absolutely loved my custom funfetti cake with buttercream and a pastry cream filling! Would 100% order from here next time I need a cake :) The bagel cookie was so unique and INCREDIBLE; I need it again ASAP. I've been following Red Gate Bakery for a while, largely to salivate visually over there tantalizing desserts. I finally stopped by right as they were opening on a Saturday morning specifically to try their weekend special bun, the Persian love bun. Pricey at $9.50 pre-tax, it is a hefty and extraordinarily decadent creation. Made with rose-flavored cream cheese speckled with crushed pistachios, and swirled with pistachio in the dough, the whole combination was evocative of truly a Persian dessert profile. I don't know why I was being conservative and giving these guys a 4 stars when I first reviewed RedGate because this spot is one of my favorite bakeries in New York and therefore with how often I've frequented them over the years and religiously kept up with their cinnamon bun and cakes of the day, they deserve a damn five stars! Buns are always so flavorful from the dough, the toppings and fillings, and freshly made every time, so pillowy and soft. I adore adore their creativity with flavor combos and that's precisely why it's a 5 for me. But guys I get such intense FOMO so please bring back flavors because I still think about the caramel coffee bun that I never got to try and it's been probably over a year maybe even two since that had been launched LOL. read more

This small, cute bakery in the East Village is a fun stop for a sweet treat but could use some improvement. The choco-toffee cookie was nicely chewy and not too sweet, but it could've used a bit more chocolate. The cannibal cookie was fun and also had the perfect amount of sweetness. I'd tried the everything bagel cookie in the past and found the flavor combo a bit too strange for me. What was disappointing recently was the blueberry lemon poppyseed loaf slice. It's loaded with blueberries and poppyseeds and has decent flavor but the texture was super dense and seemed underbaked (maybe because of too many blueberries?) so that it didn't really have a good crumb. Maybe I got a bad batch but I wouldn't recommend that loaf. I wouldn't go out of my way for this spot but their cakes do sound pretty interesting and that malty lime bar sounds good! read more

This place is such a gem!! I've been here twice now, and both times were exceptional. I love the variety of choices and creativity in their pastries and cakes. Despite the tiny space and the endless stream of sugar-eyed patrons, the staff is also super friendly and helpful, too! After hearing rave reviews on social media I was really excited to try this bakery. Unfortunately I was disappointed. While the owner was nice, I was disappointed with the taste and texture of this roll. The tajin was not necessary and neither was the mango icing. I would've preferred a regular cinnamon roll or maybe I should've gotten another bakery item. This didn't do it for me. Established in 2016.

What initially started as a simple wholesale business headquartered in Greg’s home quickly gained a cult following. After outgrowing Greg’s kitchen, Red Gate Bakery found a new home in the vibrant East Village, where he and Director of Operations, Patricia Howard (formerly of The Beatrice Inn), opened the first brick-and-mortar location in November 2019.

Meet the Business Owner: Greg R.

Greg Rales is Red Gate Bakery’s Owner, Founder, and Chef. Greg was born and raised in Washington DC, but his fondest childhood memories are from time spent relaxing and baking with his family at Red Gate Farm, their summer home in Nantucket. Greg first established Red Gate Bakery as a cottage food business, baking and delivering goods from his apartment in New York City. His creations quickly inspired a cult following. Greg joined the opening team at Flour Shop in late 2017, an experience that gave him the confidence to venture out on his own and find Red Gate Bakery a proper brick-and-mortar home. He brought his long-time friend Patricia Howard on board, found a charming corner in the East Village, and the rest was history.

Overall I felt so sad that I was feeding this to my friends and I told them that they didn't have to finish it because I wasn't going to either. So embarrassing :( Would you believe that this flop of a cake was nearly $200? And that's after the 10% coupon. I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because it wasn't completely bad, but the cake not tasting good was the biggest thing for me. I would have preferred it the other way around at least, like if the service was so bad but the cake tasted amazing, but unfortunately that was not the case for me. I found BakeStreet online, and I chose a baker, only to find out these are not "professional" bakers but HOME BAKERS! I didn't realize they employ home bakers until I asked my baker for the address. The NYC address they use for their business is NOT a real bakery! I thought these were professional bakers working out of a bakery. I found this part to be very misleading and only found out after I selected my baker and paid a deposit. My baker was 30 minutes from the city by car. I had made a deposit, and even though my intuition told me to back out, I decided to take a chance based on her reviews. I'm really curious if the reviews for the bakers are from real customers. Makes you wonder. You have to realize these cakes are being made in their homes! There are no sanitary rules that you know are being observed. My cake was placed in a cardboard box, and although it didn't really look like what I wanted, and the tassel, lettering, and diploma looked amateurish, what can a customer do after they paid for the cake and need it for a special occasion. Seriously, this is a great way to get ripped off! Once we got home and took the cake out of the box, it was falling apart, and the company had the nerve to tell us it was made properly! This cake was worth $100 maybe $150 but NOT almost $400. A cake that is baked properly will not fall apart after a 15 minute car ride! At the time that I picked up the cake, I told her I could hold it in my lap, but she said it wasn't necessary and placed the cake in the car. My Soma Cake that lasted an hour in the car to a different location never fell apart! The company had the nerve to offer me a $50 credit for a future cake that I would NEVER purchase! Why would I purchase another cake from a home baker? Poor customer service! They can enjoy my money! What a RIP-OFF! If a cake cannot make it in 15 minutes from pick-up to your location, there is something wrong with the cake! If you want to have a cake beautifully made, use Soma Cakes but don't get the red velvet. She is very talented. Her cake looked so realistic and we received a lot of compliments, but unfortunately it was bland, but it was a lot cheaper than what this company charged me, or you can just make your own cake. I'm sure it will be better than the disaster I received! Also, PLEASE do your research on this company. They have bad reviews on TrustPilot! If you want an okay cake, order from here.
