Red Gate Bakery has been on my must visit list for sometime and I'm glad that I finally was able to visit. All of their selections looked outstanding and it was a very hard to pick just a few items, but I couldn't eat everything and didn't want to be wasteful. Fortunately, I can always return. They have these very adorable Oreo cookies for $2 each. The flavor profile was very similar to the original, but obviously these were better. They also have a matcha cream filled Oreo and I will try that on my next visit. I also really enjoyed the chocolate banana bread, which was very very rich. I really wanted to try the choco-toffee cookie but they had sold out when I got there. I never understand why places don't just make more of popular items that sell out hours before closing! Since I was bringing treats to dinner, I got a Brown Butter Blondie, a Kitchen Sinker Cookie, and a PB Miso Cookie. They were all good and well received. The blondie was a crowd favorite and very good but a touch too sweet for me. I was curious to try the pb&j blondie but the employee said it was pretty sweet so I didn't buy it. When you don't like oatmeal cookies but choose an oatmeal cookie you know this place is going to be good! I ordered the midnight banana bread, the miso apple bar and the oatmeal cookie (approx. $15 for the 3). I enjoyed every item! The midnight banana bread is so rich and chocolatey it's a good thing they sell glasses of milk. The cookie is very thin and even with the icing not too sweet. I had been following Red Gate on instagram since I kept seeing their cinnamon buns go viral in so many videos. On top of the flavor changing every week, with creative ones like their strawberry filling with blueberry frosting for July 4th, they only have cinnamon buns on the weekends and are closed on Sundays, so you really have to watch their IG for the weekly flavor and plan accordingly. I waited a few months for their classic to be back on the menu one weekend (which now it seems like they put it back more often). When I went, it was a rainy Saturday morning and early around 10 am, they weren't busy at all. They had a tray out but gave me one that was already boxed from the last of the previous tray, I assumed it would be just as fresh as the tray out since they seem to bake them back to back. I was so excited to finally try it - all the videos I saw, the bun was fresh, gooey, delicious looking. The bun I got was cold, hard, and lacking flavor. It was a huge disappointment. I could not have had the "doesn't live uo to the hype"/"womp womp" feeling more. Staff wasn't very friendly and there is only a tiny table outside to eat. Homemade Oreos were good though. read more

I've been wanting to stop by for their seasonal cinnamon rolls (available on Fridays and Saturdays, with flavors rotating weekly) but I was also intrigued by their cakes which seem to change daily, and I saw they recently topped Infatuation's list for the best chocolate chip cookie in NYC. The shop is super tiny - there's no seating inside but there's one table outside under an awning. I was surprised that the choco-toffee cookie was only $4. The special cinnamon roll of the week was rhubarb blueberry ($9.50), and we got a slice of their strawberry kiwi cake ($10). The cookie is solid but nothing standout- crispy edges and chewy center but I didn't get much of the toffee flavor (I think I prefer the cookie at Pastry Box). The cinnamon roll was really good; the dough was chewy, gooey, and not bready at all. The only downside was it was really sweet - they topped it with a huge gob of icing and blueberry compote and crumble. Lastly, the cake was pretty but it was a bit of a disappointment. The strawberry and kiwi filling was fun, and I liked that the icing wasn't too sweet, but the cake itself was odd. It was too sweet and had an off texture - dry, crumbly, and dense. Overall not bad - I would come back for their cinnamon rolls but I'd probably scrape off a good amount of the topping to adjust the sweetness. read more

I placed an order for a small cake for my boyfriend's birthday on Tuesday, March 18th, for a Friday pickup. The ordering process online was smooth, and I appreciated that they were able to accommodate a change in my pickup time. However, my experience at the bakery left a lot to be desired. I arrived around 3:18 PM and wasn't greeted by any of the six staff members behind the counter. Most of them were chatting with a woman who seemed to be a former employee and had two dogs with her. The cashier was assisting two older gentlemen, so I waited in line behind them. Once they were done, I stepped forward to pick up my order--but before I could say anything, the woman with the dogs stepped in front of me. Since she had been there before me, I let her go ahead. What followed was an awkward five-minute wait as she and the staff had a personal conversation about her summer in Bulgaria (?), her family, if she'd found a new a job yet (no, she says), how she was taking the day to get a sweet treat, and other unrelated topics. At no point did anyone acknowledge me or ask if I needed help--until I finally spoke up and asked for assistance. Only then did the cashier retrieve my order. It was disappointing, especially considering how many other reviews mention issues with the staff's attitude. In a city full of incredible bakeries, service really does matter--and unfortunately, this experience just didn't meet the mark. I will say that all of the cookies are so soft, moist, and sweet. My favorite was probably the grapefruit white chocolate cookie because it was not too sweet, light, and had a touch of citrus. It cuts the sweetness of the white chocolate! The carrot loaf was a major miss; it did not taste like much, and the icing was too sweet. It just felt like I was eating bread with icing. I was a bit disappointed in it. Limited seating but the checkout area and kitchen is clean. Staff is also friendly and attentive. I was thrilled to order from Red Gate Bakery after reading the rave Yelp reviews. However, the delivery experience didn't, well, deliver. While the Confetti Sugar Cookie and Oatmeal Cookje were some of the best I've ever had, the Homemade Oreos fell short. While the image on Seamless showed 3 cookies, the price was actually $3 per stale, burnt tasting cookie. Moving on to the Cake. It was less than impressive. Although the Instagram account advertised a Blood Orange Cake, however, we received a piece that looked like someone's reject pink wedding cake. Sadly, the frosting put the 'Butter' in 'Buttercream'. I can't speak to the ambience since I ordered delivery, but I'd recommend going to the bakery in person to ensure you get the items you're paying (a premium) for. read more

I have been wanting to come here for a really long time. It is a great ambiance and they have the perfect amount of choices, and a really homemade feel. According to their instagram page, they never repeat flavors of cakes, but they made an exception for the corn cake. I love corn, so I was looking forward. I also got the kitchen sink cookie. I really wanted to like this place. I did not love the cake, it was kind of dry and dense, and the buttercream didn't have much flavor. The cookie also just tasted like a regular oatmeal cookie, I couldn't even taste any other flavors like potato chips. Overall the cookie was just too sweet and nothing special. I needed a last minute birthday cake today. Initially, I was going to go to Venieros as I've gotten cakes from there before, but I'm glad that I discovered Red Gate Bakery on a quick Yelp search. I was afraid that I couldn't get a full cake on such short notice as the website advertises that the cake is sold by the slice. Thankfully, the photos on their Instagram looked so amazing and enticing that I had to call to try to score a cake for today. The woman on the phone was super nice and helpful. I ended up going for a 6 inch lil pudding cake and it was just perfectly decadent, and not overly sweet. I could've finished the whole 6 inch cake myself. I took pictures of the other offerings and there were multiple items that have already convinced me to come back to try! Check this place out! It's been opened since 12/2019. Seeing the rave Yelp reviews had me coming in when I walked by! It's a small bake shop but they offer unique cookies, oreos, cakes...all things sweet! Staff was friendly and asked if I had any questions. I ended up tasting some of their cookies, and while I appreciate the ingenuity, some if not most of them were WAY too sweet. Out of the ones I tried, my favorites were probably the confetti cookie (well balanced cake-flavored sugar cookie) and the spiced oatmeal cookie (tasted like fall in a cookie!). They have their flavors right, but I would recommend stretching and eating each one (they keep well in the refrigerator, just make sure to store them tightly so they don't dry out). Otherwise, I agree with the other reviewers that their cake are a bit of a miss - it tasted dry and lacked flavor. Overall, although the cookies are unique, they do just taste like a standard cookie would. What a lovely and artsy bakery located right next to Houston Street between East Village and the LES. I am a fan of cookies, which happen to be one of Red Gate Bakery's signature & best baked goods. We had Oreo, Salted Caramel Brownie and PB Miso Cookie as our first try. Our favorite was the brownie, the salty flavor was perfect with caramel and the texture was so creamy.
