In my opinion, these folks need to go back to school to learn how to create asian sauces and properly use asian spices. Their sauces seem to be stuff out of a can, with no personal touches. Their basic food quality is OK, but their sauces and seasonings are sorely lacking in body, complexity and flavor. The Egg Foo Young sauce tasted old, off and burnt. The Kung Pao sauce was spicy vinegar only. The Spring Rolls I had were overly salted. The Red Ginger Special Egg Roll has good spices and flavor, but an odd texture. The Fried Rice dishes were actually good, but lacked complexity of flavor. The staff does seem very pleasant, so we are hoping for the best when perhaps various seasonings and ingredients are easier to obtain. read more

Ordered for delivery--food came quickly and was hot, but it was the worst Chinese food I've had in the area so far. The kung pao tofu was so spicy that it was more pain than flavor, and what little flavor I got was weirdly medicinal and syrupy. The broccoli with garlic was cooked fine, but I don't know why it's so sweet. The veggie egg rolls were fine, but pretty much the sort you'd find in any Chinese restaurant. Terrific place for take out or delivery. They have a large menu; I'm still working through it but so far everything had been great. The staff are great and orders have been ready on time. It's now my go to Asian carry out spot for Kensington. Definitely worth giving a try. read more

I didn't have my car and needed delivery so I chose this place of the limited options available. Delivery was very fast but the driver didn't have change for my order so he ended up getting to keep a nice size tip. The prices were good and portions were large, but the food was bland and tasted off. The egg roll and beef in my soup tastes really strongly like how the meat smells before being cooked. I don't know how else to describe it, just weird. The steamed rice was nice and soft but the sesame chicken tastes like it had candy coating. I had to add seasoning to my soup for flavor. Not the best not the worst, I may try something else from there if I'm in a bind again. read more

Great experience overall and we will definitely be back. We dined in and the food was made promptly! The lady at the desk was courteous and efficient. She answered a few questions and we got just what we wanted. It's kind of in a divey neighborhood with limited parking. But the inside was clean. Chicken Pad Thai was wonderful. We'll probably skip beef and broccoli next time to try something else. Pretty steady stream of take out orders. Our biggest complaints would be no drink fountain/ water cups and no high chair for our baby. But those aren't deal breakers so we'll be back! read more

Man did this place go downhill fast. My fiance and I gave this place a try for the first time a little over 6 months ago, after they apparently revamped their menu and added a bunch of Thai, Vietnamese, and Malaysian items. We were thrilled - their vegetarian Penang curry became a staple for my fiance, and I ordered one thing after another without a single miss for months. Then, the quality of the food started changing noticeably. Dishes that had used the nice sliced "chasu" roast pork switched over to the shredded gray rubbery stuff you see at other carryout places. Old favorites that we came back to were noticeably starchier, bland, and stingy on proteins. The last straw was when they stopped using Penang curry for the Penang curry. We thought it was a fluke and ordered again a week later and got the same flavorless yellow mess again. One final desperate order ended in everyone just throwing out most of their food - it was downright bad. If they have to cut this many corners to sustain a diverse menu, they really ought to consider consolidating their menu to something involving more overlapping ingredients to maintain some acceptable baseline of quality. Sorry for the 1-star review, Red Ginger, but knowing the quality you were capable of renders the current state of things inexcusable. read more

Red Ginger is a great addition to the Kensington restaurants. You have to had grown up in K Town to know what that means. Yes, it is too small, with not enough parking. However, it is a family-type business. It is not innovative street food, or a SF or NY Chinatown restaurant, but the kung pao chicken, lo mein, moo goo gai pan, and egg foo young a slice out of the Big Bang theory. When I called to order they automatically said they don't deliver to me until I had to tell them Bethesda is 2.7 miles and that yes you do deliver. This was a well done pad Thai for a low cost, which is rare. It was very warm, but the beef fat was starting to seize up. I did like the light taste of 5 spice and the occasional chunk of shrimp, but I'm not fully sold. The beans were AWESOME. I asked the girl at the counter for my egg roll and she asked if I wanted a regular egg roll or a "House SPECIAL Egg Roll". I said "hmm the house special?". This was the worst experience ever. I ordered my food over 2 hours ago. After 5 calls back and forth... I was told, "The driver couldn't find you...Sorry." WTH?!?! With smart phones, Google maps, navigation systems in 2015... How is that even possible??? The worst part is that I'm sick in bed which is the very reason I've wasted my time with this place. Absolutely delicious Chinese...I am a huge fan. Reminds me of my family's favorite place back home in Pittsburgh we've been going to since I was little. I've only gotten delivery but they've been consistent every time. I have had "Red Ginger nights" at least 20 times and the food is always tasty, plentiful, and affordable. Their Pad Thai and Curry dishes are really pretty good along with the standard Chinese dishes and I like that they have steamed offerings for when I want to eat a thousand calories with less fat. The delivery people are always friendly and they have been very consistent about delivery time, food temperature, quantity, and quality.
