Well after the cancellation of the rodeo due to hurricane Hillary, I decided to meet up with a few folks at Red House BBQ. Now if you don't know, I am a huge connoisseur of barbecue. Well to say I was disappointed in everything that this place had to offer was an understatement. I ordered the two meat plate a brisket and ribs with fried okra and Mexican style corn with sweet tea as a drink. First the sweet tea, for some reason it was not cold and it tasted really stale. Like it's been out there for two or three days. Yuck. As for my two meat plate. What I saw was pitiful and pathetic. The brisket was cut super thin with barely any smoke ring and serious lack of any flavor. The ribs weren't even fall apart or tender. It was like they were slapped on a grill and then added barbecue sauce onto it. I asked for no barbecue and somehow I think they realize their mistake and wiped it off before it got to my plate. As for the corn and the fried okra they look like they just came out of a Frozen bag, defrosted them and tried to hide it saying it was handmade. Both taste it awful. The one shining example was The Chinese woman named Mai Mai. She was very helpful and replaced all the meat off my plate. The second batch of ribs was adequate and the tri-tip she replaced the brisket with was actually somewhat decent. I know barbecue is not the easiest thing to make but I can tell when someone has a passion for it. And this place didn't have a passion for anything. Even the interior look like a tragic mishmash of a VFW Hall and hunting lodge. In conclusion, I don't want to come back here at all. I know it's in a small town and there's not much options. But for God's sake have a little passion with what you are cooking. And if you don't know what you're doing, there's YouTube videos and local guys here in kern county that can help you have better barbecuing with your meat. read more

We found Red House BBQ almost by accident on Yelp! I almost skipped over it because there was no menu on the website. It is a good thing that I decided to try it. It took two tries to find the parking lot because we had to dodge a pickup coming towards us in the alley. A U-turn in a neighboring parking lot brought us back to the correct parking lot. Walking through the door makes you feel like you have walked into an episode of Guy's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. To your right are six tables. To you left is the kitchen. Straight ahead and to your left is the register and chalk board where you order. We ordered a half a rack of ribs, pot beans, french fries, and two fountain drinks. We were given a number and sat ourselves at one of the empty tables. The restaurant was deceptively busy with a large to go ordered in front of us and several people ordered after we ordered. My wife claimed that the ribs were the best she had ever eaten. I would not go that far; but, they were very, very good. The spicy sauce was just what I had expected, nice spice warmth but not too hot. Pot beans were good with a hint of spice (garlic?). French fries were good especially with spicy BBQ sauce. We have found two good restaurants in Tehachapi. Too bad that we only visit every few years. read more

Food was okay. Some of the meats were dry and needed a good dosing of sauce to compensate. Quite honestly, some of my friends were a bit sick afterwards. Indoor seating is too tight to accommodate larger gatherings, and outdoor seating is just okay considering how tolerant you are of the weather at any given particular time. Staff is friendly and we didn't feel rushed. Prices are moderate, however, portion sizes could be a bit adjusted to better reflect cost considering a small plate will cost you around $20. Overall it was okay, but will try a different BBQ house next time. read more

The service was decent and I got my food quickly. I did enjoy the Mac N Cheese. Fried okra was ok. They also have Pepsi products, which is good because I love Mtn Dew. However, the pulled chicken sandwich wasn't great. The chicken was bland and lacked seasoning. The white bbq sauce on the sandwich was flavorless and the lettuce wasn't great. I have returned to this place on several occasions and been able to try their beef ribs, pork ribs, pit beef, and pulled pork.  They are all top notch!  My favorite is currently the pit beef, but the ribs are a close second and third. Been coming to Tehachipi once a year for the annual Western Swingout event. Last time this was the only eatery that I thought was good. This year I recommended this place to all my friends so of course we had to stop and have a meal here. The food did not disappoint. Definitely top quality BBQ and there's even seafood/fish options if you didn't feel like meat. However, I'd recommend coming earlier as we were there for dinner and many sides were no longer available. All the meats were really good! We tried the pulled pork, brisket and pork ribs (falls off the bones) Sides were good too! Highly recommend the Mac&cheese, cole slaw, Buffalo cauliflower. I didn't like the pot beans and really wanted the green beans, corn but they were out. There was a bit longer wait than I remembered. About 30-45 min just to get up to the counter to order (yes you order than take a table and they bring the food to you). Then after you sit down it was about another 45-60 min to get your food. Don't know why it's so long... Normally if we knew ahead of the wait we can plan for it, but since we were there for an event this wait made us miss part of the event as it wasn't a quick eat. I dined here with 8 others on Thursday 11/1 around 6PM. The atmosphere is more casual and you order and pay first versus a server taking your order at the table. Our group ordered the Family Feast at $70 which includes 1 rack of ribs, 1 whole chicken, 1 lb pulled pork, 1 lb pit beef, three 12 oz sides, 4 buns, and a large salad. Since we thought it may not be enough, we got more sides to share. The sides we got included red slaw, Mac n Cheese, fried okra, hush puppies, fried buffalo cauliflower, and even Kool Aid pickles. The place was fairly busy for a Thursday evening. The food did not take long to come out and the service was great. They were really good about taking away empty plates and containers throughout our meal. For the sides, my faves were the hush puppies and the red slaw. I was not a fan of the pickles and the buffalo cauliflower was not my fave either. As for the meat, I liked the ribs and pulled pork. A couple folks said the chicken was just "okay". Excluding alcohol, our bill only came out to $10/person which is a really good price! It's hard for me to rate BBQ places because my husband has 5 smokers at home and has been smoking meat for over 5 years. He even makes his own sauce. Absolutely awesome! Loved The Big Red House. My dad and I were just passing through, having drove for 5 hours, we stopped for gas and dinner. I did a Yelp search and TBRH looked like a winner. It certainly is! We sat next to a local who told us it is the best place in town. Nei Nei (probably spelled that wrong) owns the place with her husband and she is full of good energy. The place has character. The staff is all great. Reviews said the food comes up fast. Yes it does! My dad and I both had the slider samplers and they were perfect and so great to get three treats. Onr the best BBQ place around! My second video and the bbq is great! My brisket sandwich was si tender and great tasting! The Mac and cheese was so creamy and tasty but the coleslaw could be better. My ONLY complaint is inefficient set up to order and slow to get to the register. The floor layout isn't effective and of they sat people and took orders ar the table they would have more room and be much more efficient with the poor layout. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I have been to red house plenty of times with in the past several years of being in Tehachapi. Never have I had a bad experience. This establishment has always been one of the few gems for a restaurant this town has. That being said tonight was the opposite. You no longer can go up to the counter and order your drinks and food on the spot. Instead you have to be seated and have a waitress come and take your order. I was willing to give the new system a try, but as I had suspected, it wasn't going to work. I was seated very quickly but I must have had "ignore me" tattooed on my forehead. I waited over 25 minutes from being seated before I walked out. I counted on both hands the amount of times a waitress walked in my direction only to help somebody else out. I don't know how much more eye contact could have been made without verbally stating that I hadn't been helped. Most would say I should have gotten the attention of one of the wait staff, but what good would that do given how poor they did within the first 20 minutes? Lastly, I think the most audacious thing that happened was when I walked out the owner thank me for coming. I stated there was no need to thank me as I had waisted 25 minutes of my time to just sit around and not be helped. He just shrugged his shoulders and headed back into the building. Visiting from out of town. Thought I would try some local BBQ. I shouldn't have. I ordered mac and cheese, but they were out, along with the 2 beef rib plate, and fried okra and substituted the mac and cheese for mac and cheese sticks. The sides came from frozen and were meh at best the ribs were small and maybe all in all 4 ounces of meat. Someone noticed they were small and added a third rib which the effort was appreciated. The issue with the ribs, was they were way over cooked and dried out. They asked how the food was and I gave my honest feedback and they said sorry without offering to make things right. I also ordered the "Indian fry bread" as well and it was not even close to what I was used to, but maybe others appreciate it. I was really hoping this place would live up to some of the other reviews. However, it did not. I should have known better when informed they were out of cornbread to start. I haven't been in years and remember this as an amazing BBQ place. I was craving BBQ pork and was very disappointed. The portion size great, tons of meat. The bun was more of a sub roll than a hamburger type bun, but I liked it. I like a good bread with my pork. Wanted mac and cheese but they only had fried mac. I got carry out and it held up crispy and did not get soggy. I was not a huge fan and next time would get a different side. The meat is where we crashed. It was good with no fat, I like that, but it tasted like it was just cooked in liquid smoke. It was so strong and overpowering. Not like good slow cooked and smoked. This was a great find! We were looking for BBQ on our long drive home. It didn't disappoint. The staff was friendly and the food was good.
