Had a 7:00 pm reservation on a Saturday evening and arrived right on time, but we still had to wait about 15 minutes for our table. The restaurant didn't seem particularly busy, so that was a little surprising. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The atmosphere also wasn't quite what we expected -- the bar area was empty and the space felt a bit cold rather than lively for a Saturday night.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Once we were seated, our server was very nice and friendly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Unfortunately, the booth we were seated in hadn't been wiped down properly and still had food on it, which wasn't a great first impression.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Food-wise, it was an okay experience overall. The empanada poppers were interesting -- the flavor was unique. The lamb was good but not particularly memorable. The mole sauce was very strong and almost overpowered the meat. My favorite dish of the night was the chicken and rice, which was flavorful and well cooked. I had a glass of wine with dinner but skipped dessert. Overall, it was a decent meal, but nothing that would make me rush back. One last note -- I'm not sure if the valet is operated separately from the restaurant, but the experience there was also a little odd. When we came out, the valet simply handed us the keys and pointed to where our car was parked rather than bringing it over. Usually when you pay for valet service, they bring the car to you and open the door, so that felt a bit strange.
We have enjoyed many meals and Happy Hours at Red O since it opened here in 2017. Their Express Lunch Menu has been very good, and Happy Hour in the Bar excellent. We've had dinners just the two of us up to hosting nine people with friends. The food has been excellent, as have the drinks -- especially the margaritas. Service generally has been very good to excellent. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance warm ... although the open air bar can get chilly.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We are saddened greatly to see RED O closing in April 2026. Sadly, Red O is closing permanently on April 20, 2026.
We went here for dinner on a Sunday evening after Valentine's Day with a group of 4. We made a reservation earlier in the day. It was very busy and it seemed quite understaffed as our waiter was covering almost half the restaurant and was running around the entire time. The hostess was also setting up and cleaning tables which I don't normally see at other restaurants. We asked for chips and salsa and were told that they were no long complimentary. It was not added to our final bill so we were confused by that statement. I ordered the shrimp and carne asada fajitas. Portions were huge and no one finished their entire meal. The tortillas seemed made in house and my dish was tasty. Parking available in a paid lot, which the restaurant validates. There was also a sign for valet parking but no one was at the valet during our visit.
Red O is a whole experience. We did some tequila tasting. All was fantastic. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The energy, the cocktails, the flawless dishes--everything hits.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] One of my go-to spots for amazing Mexican food and a fun night out while in S.D..absolutely always delivers. [[HIGHLIGHT]]From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is vibrant, stylish, and buzzing with energy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food is next-level--beautifully presented, incredibly fresh, and packed with bold flavors. Every dish we tried was a hit, especially the tacos and the margaritas (dangerously good). Service was attentive without being overbearing, and the staff clearly knows the menu and takes pride in the experience. It's the perfect spot for a fun night out, a celebration, or just treating yourself to amazing Mexican Food. Red O never disappoints--can't wait to come back!
My daughter and her boyfriend wanted to treat me to a birthday lunch. One of their favorite restaurants is Red O's so they suggested we go there so I could try it . So, the next day after my birthday, we headed to Red O's in La Jolla, California for lunch. It was an outstanding experience from start to finish. The décor is elegant, the ambiance is inviting, and the service was impeccable. Chips and salsa both fresh and delicious were brought to the table before we ordered so we could enjoy. I had a Caesar salad and tortilla soup, both fresh and flavorful. My daughter ordered the Poke bowl and her boyfriend ordered enchiladas. They looked great! After our meal, we had dessert which was also outstanding! It was the perfect portion to enjoy without the guilt! The staff was professional and attentive. I left thoroughly impressed and can't wait to return. Highly recommend!"
COME HUNGRY! I've been wanting to try Red O for a long time, so I felt my birthday was a perfect excuse. Unfortunately, I am a December baby--19th to be exact--so the Friday night we went, it felt as though the entire restaurant was full of holiday parties. So it was LOUD! Loved the live music, although it is the type of restaurant you need to shout at each other just to hear. Literally so loud that when our server asked us if we wanted chips and salsa I guess he heard yes when we said no, so he brought us over the chips and salsa and charged us for it btw the salsa is SPICY! The Lime-Marinated Ceviche Negro was divine (know it is SPICY)! It was a massive portion, so don't be worried about having to split it as an appetizer. In fact, my plans are to come back and just order this ceviche with drinks for happy hour. Fried sweet plantains are my jam, also quite a gigantic portion for a side, so definitely another shareable item. I was quite disappointed with the short rib enchiladas. I felt the meat was chewy when I was expecting it to be tender. Cocktails were on point and strong! I would be on the floor if I had more than one. Overall a dim lit sexy vibe. Flavorful bites. Looking forward to visiting for happy hour with my girls!
I've dined at Red O in the University Town Center in La Jolla many times, and the service is consistently excellent. Today was no exception. While waiting for our table at the bar, Esther, the bartender, greeted everyone with a smile and was both professional and genuinely cheerful. It was clear she truly enjoys taking care of her guests, which made the wait pleasant. Mary and Chris were our server team, and they were outstanding. They were polite, hardworking, attentive, and incredibly pleasant throughout the entire meal. Red O is one of those rare restaurants where you can always count on consistently great service. The food goes without saying. If you love Mexican cuisine, there's an excellent variety to choose from. I highly recommend the enchiladas, and the grilled salmon was also cooked perfectly. A blend of traditional Mexican food with an innovative twist. From the moment you step foot inside you're greeted and embodied in a resort inspired atmosphere. Wow, this place was beautiful inside and out. There is valet parking upfront or you can park for free in the near by parking garage for up to 3 hours. There is indoor and an enclosed outdoor patio available. There is a full bar and plenty of room for large groups. There is an elegant vibe and everything was nicely decorated for the holiday season. We were celebrating a birthday and they made our dining experience very memorable. From the custom birthday card to the free celebration sparkling wine, this place made our evening special. The drinks were delicious, the food was amazing, the service was exceptional, and the desserts were a nice way to end dinner. We ordered the crispy empanada poppers and the queso fundido to start. The poppers had a spicy kick and were very good. The queso was good, the only downside was the small amount of tortillas given. We ended up having cheese left over and no tortillas to eat it with. We compromised and used the complimentary tortilla chips, but would have been nice to have had more. I ordered the enchiladas trio platter (short rib and chicken) and it was delicious. There was good flavor and a lot of food. The desserts were good, but nothing special. The flan was a little bland, but we did enjoy the butter cake. You can say we will definitely be returning and recommend giving them a try.
I had a wonderful lunch at RED O. It was my first time here and was really impressed by the service and the food. We made a reservation but we probably didn't have to. The restaurant was huge and there was plenty of room on a weekday lunch. They had displays of tequila everywhere (good sign). Our server greeted us as he showed us our table and checked if it was the first time we were there (yes, for most of us). He introduced us to the menu and offered chips and salsa to start. Tasty salsa! We also ordered guacamole, which came with plantain chips (yum!) I ordered a cocktail to start and it was ok. Could have been stronger or a little more generous but it's not bad. I was initially choosing between a short rib enchiladas and the shrimp one but our server told us that there's an enchilada trio (not listed on the menu), which consists of the chicken, short rib and shrimp enchiladas. Problem solved! That's what I got. All 3 were good and my favorite was the shrimp, followed by chicken and then the short rib. For dessert, we got the tres leches. I highly recommend it. It's not too sweet, and it's moist and "melty". I love it.
I live in San Diego and I have not found the one Mexican restaurant that makes me forsake all others. Until now. Red O, you were fantastic. The outside patio was beautiful even in the rain. The service was impeccable. My glass was never empty. Try the cucumber refresher. Delicious! The food thought? The lamb chops in mole sauce were so tender and not gamey at all. The sea bass in chili sauce? Buttery flaky perfection. Excellent flavor. The surf and turf? Cooked perfectly! The rice tasted like a Mexican Chinese fusion rice. Tasty! I was so stuffed when I left. But so so happy! I'll be back.
I come here every other month for happy hour and it never disappoints! I feel like I have tried everything on the menu and came to the consensus that the top things to try are the chicharrones, empanadas, ceviche, and the crispy beef taco. My favorite is that the crunch aspect of the food is always there! The chicharrones literally come out crackling. Not to mention the complimentary chips and spicy salsa is always nice to snack on while waiting for the food. For alcohol, the sangria is always yummy as white or red. The go to is always a frozen margarita, especially on a hot day. I am so surprised, that this place is not constantly bombarded with crowds for happy hour, but also thankful because that means a quicker meal for me!
First the good. The food was delicious. Extremely good. The service not so much. We were there about 3 hours and checked on 4 times. Two of those I had to call someone over. The bill was wrong adding what we already paid for at the bar and my initial order was wrong. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I could understand if it was busy but it was almost empty for most of the 3 hours.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Maybe they had an off day but I wasn't impressed with the service. Again the food was hands down delicious. So take this review for what it's worth. After thinking about it some more I bumped up the rating from 3 to 4 stars. The be fair the service was not great since we felt as if we were forgotten. Service would be 2 stars but the food was a 5. We will give it another try down the road.

First, I'll like to say our server Edgar was amazing for Christmas Eve. It was a set menu. We actually had the filet with two shrimps, lobster enchilada, refried beans and red rice.. when I say the food was so delicious . I Cannot wait to go back to enjoy their regular menu. Pretty space. Nice food. I just now had an enjoyable lunch, paid my bill, and made my way back to the garage. Red O commits to 3 hours of validated parking, I had used maybe 45 minutes. So I come to the gate only to get a message that says the validation was used previously. I tried a few times and got the same message. So my choice was to reverse, park again, make my way back to the restaurant, get a new validation, and try again. But naively I thought I would pay the $6 and *immediately* go back to Red O to have it rectified. Easy, right? Instead, the manager insisted that I take this up with their landlord and they absolve any responsibility for it. I told him he was being penny wise and pound foolish and this is really something they shouldn't impose on their customer. So now I have to chase down Irvine to have this taken care of. Just plain old poor service. read more

I came in on a Wednesday and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the ambience of the place is really nice and fancy[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], i tried the stacked ahi fish plate as an appetizer. While it was good and flavorful, it was definitely not shareable--the portions were very small for the price. That said, the guacamole and plantain chips completely stole the show. They were absolutely out of this world--fresh, perfectly seasoned, and easily the highlight of the meal. I'd come back just for those alone. read more

Late night Happy Hour in San Diego! Red "O" did not disappoint! We visited the Newport location a couple Saturdays ago and figured we might as well try the one closer to home. Same, but way different! Food was delicious, and ambiance is quite different from the 2 locations. Back to the food, happy hour on point! The La Jolla location is quite elegant... Deep, Dark, and luxurious. The staff!! Shout out to Kevin our server/bartender! Definition of what a bartender should be. He engaged us from the minute we walked in. Kept my beer full and my palate craving more. Over all great late night experience! I will shout out Newport as well! Place was jumping!! The DJ had us going from the jump! We sat at the bar and were very happy with the service in Newport as well. We would not miss an opportunity to visit either location again. read more

Really nice restaurant with rustic and elegant decor. I loved the high ceilings and the indoor plants. It felt like you were in another place. We came on a Sunday for an early dinner and we almost had the whole place to ourselves. It was nice but I would also like to see how the energy is on a busier night. On to the food....i love a place that gives you complimentary chips and salsa so extra kudos for that! Our waitress was very attentive and gave us suggestions on food. I ended up getting tacos. Chicken sand short rib. They were very tasty! The tortilla were fresh and nice. They make their tortillas fresh here. I got a Flor de la Canela drink. It was delish but not sure what the fire part was as I did not see any fire on my drink...anyway, the person I was with had fajitas and those were also great! read more

This is a Mexican restaurant in University Town Center (UTC). They have good food and nice ambience. Customer service was friendly, though not super attentive. The restaurant wasn't busy either, maybe they were just short-staffed. To start, they have unlimited chips and salsa. The salsa was savory, citrusy, mildly spicy, and overall just so addicting. I could just keep eating it if the food didn't come. * Slow-Braided Duck Taquitos 2/5 - Couldn't really tasted the duck. It was like mystery ground meat in a taquito roll. * Sizzling Fajitas - Half shrimp 5/5 and half carne asada 4/5. This came with 3 huge shrimps for the fajita. They were big, juicy, delicious, and a bit charred for extra flavors. I wished there were more shrimps and that they were the same shrimps for the enchiladas. The carne asada was good and there was a lot. * Enchilada Trio - Chicken 4.5/5 - This was shredded chicken. The meat was tender and flavorful, almost like shreded pork texture and flavor. - Short rib 4/5 - Also very tender, good flavor. - Shrimp 3.5/5 - These were small baby shrimps, so each bite didn't have that fulfilling feeling. They did soak up and blend well with the creamy sauce. They also gave free tres leches cake for birthdays. It came with a big sparkler which was pretty cool. read more

First time at this location with a group of colleagues. Service was friendly and relatively quick for the size of group that we had. They served House margaritas which were good and potent. The duck taquitos were fabulous. The Carnitas dish I would probably not order again. A little too soupy, salty, and just far from traditional. Everything else that my colleagues tried on the list got good comments. They give you three hours of free parking so make sure you bring the ticket to validate if you're not using valet parking. Definitely a fun restaurant with lots to offer. I'd come here again. read more

We went here for the Valentine's Day and had a great time! They gave me a rose which was a nice touch! They had a prix fixe meal and we had the shrimp ceviche, lamp chops, enchiladas, and the strawberry tres leche. Everything was super delicious except the lamp chops. They were very bland and the pea mixture was cold. A bit disappointing for a vday dinner-so I took a star off. I'd definitely come back, but stick to the traditional Mexican dishes. read more

Great atmosphere and interior is very neat- service sucked! My server must have forgot to check on us; he never once came back for refills nor check in the food etc. crazy thing is, this place wasn't busy at the time I visited. A nice older gentleman who was a busser ended up giving us refills, boxes to go and additional stuff we wanted to order. Honestly he is the one should've gotten 100% tip off our bill. I've given him more than enough on the side as the server didn't deserve much. Food is ok, nothing like amazing. Pricier than other Mexican places around here but we are paying for the atmosphere and the location right? I am not sure if I'll come back. read more

We explored the Happy Hour (offered daily 3-6PM and Friday & Saturday, 9-11PM) menu this time around and discovered some great dishes at reasonable prices. - Slow-Braised Duck Taquitos | Crunchy taquito shell filled with slow-cooked duck and sitting in tomato-árbol chile sauce. Baby arugula tops this dish. The duck was slightly dry, even after dipping it into their amazing chile sauce, if that makes sense. - Chilled Shrimp Ceviche | Refreshing and zesty with avocado for added creaminess. The plantain chips are mildly sweet and crunchy. Stunning dish. - Crispy Carnitas Empanadas | Great use of ingredients (fresh corn masa, house cheese blend, tender carnitas) and the avocado tomatillo salsa adds creaminess and acidity. - Crispy Empanada Poppers | Similar to jalapeño poppers, but in empanada form. I loved the simplicity of ingredients as the flavors are more prominent. - Handmade Corn & Goat Cheese Tamales | Creamy and a little tangy, these tamales were topped with crema and tomatillo salsa which really added more depth to its flavor profile. Really done well (the corn masa was moist too)! THE DRUNK DRINKS (OFF THE HAPPY HOUR MENU). - Spicy Mango Mojito | A sweet and tarty drink, but the serrano syrup kicked my ass. It's best to consume in small sips. These drinks were not off the Happy Hour menu, but we had to try them anyway... - Cocorita | Oddly great. The coconut water, lime juice, agave, and tequila gave it this very refreshing, slightly sweet with acidic undertones. It comes in an actual coconut... a little gimmicky, but sure, why not. - Tamarindo Loco | Made with strawberry pureé. It's got a lot of flavors here... sweet, tangy, sour, and back to sweet. It was a little confusing, but we drank it nevertheless. Pro Tip: Taco Tuesday! Tacos run about $5 each, which seems high, but normal pricing is about $25 for 2 tacos or 3 for $30 (it does come with red rice & refried beans). So, you are paying considerably less. How much less? Well, that's math's problem, not mine. read more

Half and Half Fajitas, Shrimp Ceviche, Red O Salad, did not disappoint. Everything was tasty and very fresh, absolutely loved the jumbo shrimp we got on the side for the salad (not pictured). Flavor was good and generally we enjoyed our dining experience here. Server was attentive, major shoutout to Lucy, and added overall quality to our time there. The restaurant was relatively crowded but tables were cleaned fast, service was on point, generally a great dinner overall. Definitely will be returning, I do very much like the drinks and the food that is here. Also the layout of the restaurant is spectacular, very nice play to go for a special dinner. It was a nice date night location with high end Mexican food vibes. The drinks were great, very refreshing pairings with the food and mixed well. However the food was very expensive and not very interesting. We ended up taking most of the enchiladas home out of curtesy but neither of us wanted to eat the leftovers because the sauce was not very good. The chicken for the fajitas was bone dry unfortunately. The veggies were cooked to perfection which helped save the day. I probably wouldn't say this place is worth the visit, but to each their own! We live this place. Anytime we head to San Diego this is our first stop. The food is always tasty and the Happy Hour is amazing. We found out that the menu in each Red O is a little different as I was looking for a dish that I ordered at the Newport Beach location. When we walked into the establishment we were greeted with a warm welcome. The service was spot on and we didn't feel rushed in our dining experience. The service was amazing and the timing was perfect. We love this location. It's one of our favorite places to dine, The ambience is beautiful, energetic, and lovely. Found my new favorite restaurant in San Diego! Red O's is gorgeous inside and out. Go see it for yourself, check out the pictures attached. Service is fast and friendly. Huge shoutout to the bartender, Kevin, for the awesome skinny/spicy margarita and tequila + beer recommendations. He was so attentive and friendly, and took extra care with each drink. Food is delicious. I tried the empanadas, guac, green salad, and salmon, all of which were phenomenal. The tres leches cake was the best I've ever tasted. The only thing that should be entirely removed off the menu is the filet mignon - the color on the meat is very displeasing and it tasted sour despite being tender - likely an inappropriate marinade. Can't wait for the next time I visit. This is a great place for a special occasion, groups, happy hour, or to impress a date. read more
Back at the Red O tonight for our company dinner...we got the infamous server Omar he's fantastic...and all the wait staff top notch. We got two orders of the Red O special a giant tomahawk steak and giant lobster tail served fajita style with all the fixings, it was enough for the five of us and we even took home some leftovers. This place is beautiful inside, so many great photo opportunities, and I'm not just talking about the food! ;-) Margaritas were perfection, and appetizers and dessert delicious!!! read more

I had this place on my radar since their grand opening, and I've finally made my way here for lunch on 3/09/24 during San Diego restaurant week. Complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were thin, warm, and crispy. The salsa was chunky and zesty, just the way I like it, 4/5 stars overall. Crispy Empanada Poppers, do indeed pop with plenty of cream cheese and a slight bite of spice on the tip of your tongue. It would have been perfect if it was also stuffed with short rib or carnitas, 4/5 stars overall. Taquitos De Pollo: a generous amount of chicken inside, and the perfectly crispy tortilla with the fresh veggies and cotija cheese made this an enjoyable appetizer, 4.5/5 stars. Carnitas Wet Burrito: a work of art visually and gustatorily. The verde sauce was savory without any overpowering lime flavor. The red sauce had the traditional bitter enchilada sauce, but the onions and garlic notes were pleasing. The carnitas were plenty, tender and juicy, 4/5 stars. Tres Leches Cake: the sweet fruit was an excellent combo with the soft cake soaked in milk. The cake itself was mildly flavored, but the berries took it up a notch, 4/5 stars. Onto the restaurant, as it has an open layout that I appreciate and is immaculately clean. The hostesses and our server, Raina, provided prompt and friendly service. The highlight of this spot is that they bring out fresh and warm chips. I got the enchilada trip and that was good. The salmon risotto was also delicious. Service was decent. It did feel like they only had one server at the establishment and times. The establishment itself has nice decor although it does feel a little outdated. Recommend it if you're around for happy hour and work nearby as it's surrounded by office buildings. The parking situation is a little confusing though as a lot of people circled passed valet multiple time but there is validated parking in the parking structure. read more

Good fish tacos but not for the price. It was a very large portion though. If two people share one thing, I think it's worthwhile to order from here as takeout. Service was okay. We were a large group so maybe they came to us less for that reason. One of my orders never came and we were about done. Thankfully they were able to cancel it. read more

Is the only parking option, the garage? I notice a parking lot close by or is that for a private business?
They have valet parking if you don't want to park in the garage. But I recommend just parking in the garage and Red O validates for you.
Do you have a separate lunch menu on Saturdays? Unfortunately I can't get the website menu to work. Thanks.
We offer brunch on Saturday and Sundays. Just head to our website, select your location and you can view all menus there.
Do you have live Mariachis?
We do bring in mariachis for special occasions, but we don't have them on a regular basis.

Happy Hour is only at the bar. I would not say that Red O is dog friendly.
Do you still have happy hour on Saturday? Update: just went there today (Saturday) and yes they do have Happy Hour. I don't know why Cory said they don't. Thankfully I called them.?
Our current happy hour special is offered Monday-Friday from 3-6pm. We hope to see you there soon!

Hi Audrey! Yes, we offer a kids menu with entrees starting at $10. Options include a Cheese or Chicken Quesadilla, Grilled Chicken or Steak Tacos each with choice of fries, fruit or rice & beans.
Is this restaurant following the indoor mask mandate?
Not the one in San Diego. We ate there and none of the staff wore masks.
Are dogs welcome for the outdoor dining?
No they are not July 2023. In fact they didn't even like me waiting with my dog in front of the restaurant for takeout. Hostess was weird about it
For their weekend brunch do they have bottomless mimosas?
Yes! Also the weekend brunch buffet is a la carte now.
Do you have tacos Tuesday? If so how much and what time?
Yes they do. Just went there today and tried the chicken and short rib tacos, they are delicious. They are $4 each. Highly recommend getting them. I think happy hour is 3-7pm.
