Beware when you sit across from me and order something ridiculously delicious. You may get stabbed by my fork or in the case of my vegetarian daughter, assaulted by my 'non-tainted clean" utensils! Fortunately for both my husband and my daughter during our lunch at Red Orchid my husband ordered his Pork Spicy Basil dish 'Thai Hot' and my daughter ordered the Massaman Curry that was loaded with potatoes (eh, Mom can do without potatoes but, dang that sauce was to die for) or I would have been obnoxiously dipping into their food across the table. My Lad Nah with big honking handmade rice noodles and tons of veggies (including baby corn that tasted fresh - serious bonus!!!) in a yummy brown sauce with tons of flavor was pretty perfect. I ordered a 6 heat that was probably more of a 4-5, but I'm so not being picky about that because every bite was delectable. The fact that the owner lost her first restaurant in Thailand during the tsunami and miraculously found her home in Pittsburgh working at one of my all time favorite Thai restaurants (Nickys!) among others, only makes me happier to discover this cute little place on Babcock Blvd. in the heart of the North Hills. I look forward to returning regularly and perhaps revising my review upward after I taste a few more of the delights coming out of this happy Thai kitchen! read more

I've been hearing amazing things about this place so when a friend told me she wanted to try Thai food, I told her this was the place we should go. A Double Take Deal and BYOB made it easy for her to accept my invitation. I picked up a bottle of white and we met on a Friday evening to catch up over what we hoped would be a good meal. We were not disappointed. In fact, I don't even know if words can express how amazing our night was. It was one of those magical nights where everything was just so lovely. My friend and I shared some good conversation (along with that bottle of wine) with each other as well as our dining neighbors who could not have been more delightful. Our waitress was attentive and we were very pleased with the service. The food also surpassed my expectations. While I was overwhelmed by the menu, I was very excited to see several duck items featured. Not many places offer duck and when they do it is maybe one lone item. On this night I luckily found Crispy Duck Cashew written on the specials board for the day. It made my decision easier. My friend went with the Crispy Chicken Cashew special and we started with an order of the fried spring rolls. Our meals were delightful and we were enjoying ourselves so much that I ordered dessert. After seeing the sticky black rice with pumpkin, I could not say no. It was definitely the right decision. I'd like to go back for more. Perhaps to try one of the salads or soups. I've learned to be careful when ordering a spice level, though. 4 is about as much as I can handle. All in all, I say the atmosphere created by Red Orchid is definitely gong worthy! read more

The food is delicious, the workers are attentive, the servings are big enough for sharing. Try to save room for dessert, too. I love their mango sticky rice. It's also a BYOB place. I had takeout from here this past Friday evening with my girlfriend. We had decided to get food from here the night before whenever we were on our way home from dinner we noticed a sign for this place at the corner of Babcock and Three Degree Road. We decided to give it a try it since we both enjoy Thai food and there prior to this there had been no authentic Thai food in the North Hills. It was definitely an experience trying to order from here since there was no menu online at the time due to their website being under construction and also because we had never seen the place before. However we decided to go with some classic Thai dishes that they would be sure to have and so I ordered a beef red curry while my girlfriend ordered the pad thai. Without knowing how spicy their food was going to be and after a slight misstep of a overly spicy 10 order in Vegas, I decided to be reasonable with a 6 while my girlfriend went with a 1. She was nice enough to pick up the food while I was out running a local 5K and so I was unable to see the place for myself. My girlfriend did say that the place seemed quaint and that it also looked like it was BYOB. My beef red curry came with the traditional items of baby corn, bamboo shoot and leaf (basil or kaffir) as well as an ample side of rice. The curry tasted nice and spicy while also displaying a somewhat sweet flavor which I really enjoyed. My girlfriends Pad Thai also had a good taste to it which she enjoyed. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here in the future. I thought that their food was good and I am interested to actually see and eat in the restaurant. Never going to the Red Orchid again, at least for lunch because of the absolutely awful service. The server is one of the most sour, unpleasant, unhelpful, miserable people I've ever met. We called in advance to make sure they were open, and 15 minutes later arrived for lunch. The server brought the hot tea we ordered in a small pot with no lid. The result was that it wasn't designed to pour tea without the lid, so it spilt all over the table. I had to leave the table to find him, told him what happened and waited. When he showed up, I had to ask for napkins to clean up the mess but not before he dropped off an empty little tea pot. When I told him the pot was empty, he instructed us to pour what water was left from the old pot to the new one. So more tea spilt onto the table when we followed his advice, and so needed more napkins. Our entrees arrived about 30 seconds after our appetizers. After a couple minutes of eating, he came by with the bill which he insisted us paying immediately and actually told us we had to leave because the restaurant was closing (something he could have mentioned when we called, or when he greeted us, to when he delivered the food. He stood there and stared at us until we took out our credit cards. After paying he passed us on the way out and jumped in his car. No "Thank you". No "Come again". And certainly no smile. Just a look of someone experiencing utter contempt. We will never go there despite the kitchen's effort to create a tasty meal. Go to any of the other Thai restaurant in North Hills for courteous, friendly service and a meal that will likely cost less because Red Orchids prices have shot up. It's hard to get the waiter's miserable face and sour disposition out of our minds. Don't let the Red Orchid ruin your lunch plans. read more

We went on a Sunday night, I believe our 4th time here and the restaurant was very busy. The interior is very nicely decorated. The food and service were both very good. We asked for our food to be a 10 and it was served pretty hot unlike some other restaurants. Would recommend for the food. This spot has always been good, but they haven't changed their quality of food or service throughout covid! It's been great! You can get delivery through apps, it's quick and the food is always hot and fresh. I love the Thai fried rice, and the spice level is always on point (I usually go with a 2 because I don't like a lot of spice just a little bit)- it's never too spicy. I love spicy food but watch out!! My friend and I ordered drunken noodles and thai basil beef -- figured since we are asian we can handle hot. (They offer a 1 to 10 spectrum) We got 4 and we were sweating and almost crying. Definitely should have been more conservative with our spicy spectrum. We ordered a side of steamed veggies and it wasn't very fresh. There were dark colors on the carrots. Portions were decent and the price for dinner was typical. Abour $12-13 for an entree. They have your typical Thai food offerings: pad thai, drunken noodles, green curry..etc. The service was a little slow but there was only 1 person serving / waiting on tables inside. Tom yum soup - this was the only good dish I had compared to the other options I ordered below. I would get this again. Crispy noodles were not crispy, rather drenched in saw which made the dish look more like a soup. The taste wasn't my style either something was off. Don't bother with the calamari appetizer. Best drunken noodles! I can't order them enough.. also the spicy Basil chicken is great, too. I'd recommend being conservative with your spice level though - it's pretty spicy here. I can usually do an 8-9 at most Thai places around here but I usually only go up to a 6 tops at Red Orchid. read more

So disappointed. We were visiting from out of town, group of 15 and went there because of good ratings. First the personnel seemed annoyed to have us there, they were empty so apparently they don't need business, rude, wouldn't come by without being called over. Food was terrible: bland to the point we had to ask for salt pepper aNd soy sauce. One was spicy and uneatable, waitress said there was no spice. Then she wouldn't split the bills. It's been a while since I have been to Red Orchid. This review is actually for a takeout order. I ordered the massaman curry with chicken. The spice level was perfect and the curry had lots of yummy flavor. I devoured it. My review loses a star though for the pad Thai. My friend got that and I tried it. Honestly, it was bland. Our new favorite place for Thai! We currently have a couple favorites in the city but I love that this one is close to home. The location itself is small and in a strip mall on Babcock Blvd. Typically when I think of a restaurant in a strip mall I don't consider it to be anything fancy. Red orchid did a great job making their restaurant feel elegant. I personally loved the table runners and fresh flowers. The food was delicious! I loved that they offered a variety of options and that curry fried rice was one of them! We ordered crab rangoons and my husband said that they are his new favorite in the city. He liked the mixture of sweet and a little bit of spicy. They use a spice scale of 1-10. I traditionally order a 6 but it was a little too spicy for me. Delicious but spicy! I am so excited to have good Thai without driving to North Side or Bellevue or farther. The restaurant looks cute, not too stereotypical ethnic, not too take-out ish, not too duded-up. Just right, freshly decorated. Pretty small. BYOB. I stopped for takeout in the middle of the afternoon and my order was ready in 10 minutes. They weren't busy at this in-between time. Service was fast and friendly. The soup option that came with the lunch portion was Tofu that day and really delicious. It reminded me of chicken noodle soup but with added Thai spices and flavor and lots of black pepper. There weren't noodles but chunks of what tasted like fresh silky tofu. The lunch portion of Drunken noodles was excellent, lots of veggies, wide chewy rice noodles that were almost in chunks, tofu that tasted fresh - no stale oil flavor. I asked for very spicy and got what I'd consider a 5 though I appreciate that they'd rather be safe and not burn someone's mouth. The lunch portion was enough for me with the soup although I would have eaten more if there was more as it was that good. $7.50 The dinner portion of pad thai was a nice dinner portion - about the size you'd expect. The sauce was pretty good, not too sweet with a medium amount of spice (asked for 7 and it seemed more like a 4 to me but I like spicy). I'd call it much better than average Pittsburgh pad thai as I think average is usually too sweet and greasy and this was not. After having disappointing food a month ago, we came back....BAD IDEA.. WE WERE THE ONLY PEOPLE THERE AND GOT POOR SERVICE. We had to ask for refills of water, to take our order, for a container -to -go and our bill. Nobody came around to check on our food. Terrible! Breading on fish is not the same as they used to use. It is bland and tasteless. the crab .rangoons were overcooked, had a starchy floury debris on them and the filling was different than in the past and full of sugar. Red Orchid has been a very welcome addition to my take out repertoire. I adore Thai food and was anxious to try this place after randomly having Red Orchid's spring rolls as a free sample at my gym after they first opened. Kind of a strange introduction to them, but knowing we could easily grab some yummy take out on the way home from the gym is appealing. I've really liked and enjoyed the dishes I've tried here. I obviously gravitated towards the Pad Thai initially, and it's quite tasty. They prepare their tofu expertly, lightly crispy, never mushy or spongy as I've experienced other places. I've tried a handful of dishes since my first visit, but the standout to me is the Drunken Noodles. The rice noodles are homemade and extra fat, soaking in deep flavors of chili paste, basil and bell peppers. It has some serious heat even when I order a 4 spice level! Yum. This is definitely my go to dish here. The portions are good, usually enough left over for lunch the next day. And the leftovers always reheat well. Prices are around $10-14 for dinner entrees, which it think is average compared to other Thai places in the area. I've eaten in their cute dining room twice, one for lunch and most recently for dinner. While our dinner service wasn't the most prompt initially, our food came out quickly once we were able to order and we got to meet the owner.
