My favorite Thai restaurant has always been Thai Place in Wexford. I always enjoyed interacting with the wonderful family owners. Since they closed last year, I've been searching for a new Thai Restaurant that makes Pad Thai as well as Thai Place. I'm so glad I found the Red Orchid on Babcock Blvd in the north hills of Pittsburgh. I haven't been there enough to get to know the owners yet but it's a family owned local business, which is always a priority for me when choosing a local business. The kitchen is right behind the front entrance. As soon as you enter, it is like stepping into a warm cloud of layered aromas -- sweet, spicy, herbal, and savory all at once. cilantro, Peppery Thai basil, Citrusy, floral lemongrass and sharp, green kaffir lime leaves are just some of the wonderful aromas greeting you! We all ordered Pad Thai which was yummy. The order came with a free order of Crab Rangoon which also was excellent. We haven't tried any of the other dishes yet but I'll be sure to follow-up and let you know but I'm confident everything here is fantastic!!

For my 100th time eating Red Orchid, I got the Kao Soy with chicken - lvl 6 spice. A delicious bowl of egg noodles swimming in spicy curry. Topped with crispy fried onions, crunchy egg noodles, and red onion. Honestly one of the best things on the menu. Overall, Red Orchid is still my go-to Thai restaurant. Food is always great. Prices are low compared to other local spots. Service is meh but not terrible.

Red Orchid has become my go-to spot for Thai food, especially when I'm looking for a delicious and affordable meal. While it may not be the absolute best Thai I've had, I do think it's the best local pick for the price. My favorite dish is the Panang Curry with chicken. I've also tried a variety of their curries, and none have disappointed me. If you're looking for something to start with, the app sampler is a great pick to get a taste of a variety of flavors. I usually order takeout, but the restaurant itself is spacious, and the service is... okay. Overall, if you're in the area and craving Thai food that won't break the bank, Red Orchid is definitely a solid choice!

All the food was delicious and tasty, especially the stir-fried basil and spring rolls.

We had lunch on a weekend, can recommend! There's free parking in the lot in front of the strip of stores and gender-specific restrooms down the hall beyond the host station (the ones near our table in the dining room were for staff). We were seated and served quickly. The food was okay; we found that a level 2/10 was plenty spicy food our tastes. The curry was thinner than I prefer and had a very high tofu to vegetable ratio but low topping to rice ratio. Too much to eat in one sitting but half was not enough for a full meal, so we got the spring rolls, which had a dipping sauce that was different than others I've tried. Typical American Thai restaurant decor.

Got seated so quick by friendly staff. The food came out amazing and I also tried tofu that my friend had as well. I am usually not a tofu person, but it was delicious! Definitely will be back to try more of their menu items.

While in Pittsburgh we were meeting a friend for dinner. We wanted Thai food and fortunately for us our first choice restaurant was closed that night, because we ended up at Red Orchid instead.... We started with some spring rolls and the Tom Yum soup with veggies. The spring rolls came out piping hot and crisp. The Tom Yum was full of veggies and had a great kick to it. Every Thai restaurant does things differently, I will say this place uses a bit more fish sauce than I am used to. Not bad by any means, but just more. For our entrees we ordered Thai fried rice, pad Kee Mao and the Sweet and Sour chicken. The noodles in the pad Kee mao were the authentic flat thick noodles and were the perfect level of spicy. The Thai Fried Rice and the Sweet and sour chicken were also on point! This was a gem of a restaurant and I am so glad we tried it. We will absolutely be back on our next visit to The Burgh!

Tucked away in an unassuming strip, Red Orchid has a wonderful ambiance with unpretentious and tasteful Thai-style decor. Lunch is so affordably priced and everything we had here was very good. I ordered the Massaman curry and it came with a simple but comforting soup and the curry itself was just the right consistency. I got it at spicy level 7 (out of 10) and I think it was a good level to be able to taste and enjoy the food while also having a strong spicy punch. The service was also attentive and kind.

Love this place. The ginger tea is amazing! Crabmeat Rangoon is excellent. The sampler plate was very good. My daughter loved the curry.

Pad see ew with tofu leftovers

Definitely a decent place to get Thai food, especially in this area (North Hills). They have all of the usual Thai entrees and appetizers, as well as a few desserts you may not find in other places (like oreo mousse cakes as well as boba tea). I tried the pad see ew with tofu and Thai custard for my meal. Overall, the food is solid. I've had better pad see ew, but this was still a flavorful meal. The portion was decent, but being a bit more expensive than in other places, I thought it would also be a little larger. They are generous with their addition of vegetables. There are pieces of broccoli, cabbage, and carrots included. Decent amount of tasty sauce. Nicely sized tofu chunks which were flavorful (note that beef, seafood, and shrimp all come at an up charge for proteins). Thai custard is my go-to Thai dessert, and this one was pretty good (again, not the best I've had but good for the North Hills). Some parts of the rice were hardened and difficult to chew. But overall, they made a tasty and balanced custard (a bit on the eggy side) with a fair portion of rice. Once again, though, it's more expensive than at nearly any other Thai place. All in all, this is a good choice for Thai food near Ross or the North Hills. Their prices are moderately more expensive than at other locations around Pittsburgh, though, and the food is just pretty standard but satisfying when you're craving Thai.

Food is never completed by the time quoted, and routinely 10-15 minutes late. Their bubble tea is powdery and not great. Go to Nikkis.

Not only do they look great, they taste great. It's always great to find a location that takes pride in their mixed drink selection. The only flag I have is if you order the Honey Bee Martini be prepared to feel like a bee is stinging you every time you take a sip. I enjoy spice, but even this had enough kick to make me savor it periodically. Disclaimer: Taste the flower at your own risk. Remember the saying, "Curiosity killed the cat". - Food: 4 / 5 Appetizer - When you think American cuisine, what do you picture? A hamburger? Hot dogs? An American Flag on the back of a Ford F-150 with a bald eagle in the driver seat? Even though all those can be true, I think of Crab Rangoon. Even as a non-crab person, I do enjoy popping one of these bad boys into my mouth after dipping it in the provided sauce. Nicky's uses a homemade pineapple sauce that adds just a slight tang on this small delight. Entrée - Bread wasn't the greatest creation of mankind. Actually, it was spice because that allowed Thai food to flourish. It has always been of my opinion that if you know how to use spices, then you can make any dish pop. We had the Pad Phet and Basil. Both dishes were absolutely flavorful and made each bite as enjoyable as the last. If you get a box, make sure to get two and a paper bag for reinforcement because if you have sauce left, you are going to want to pour that over your leftovers. Dessert - The sticky rice mango is definitely an interesting dish, but it had something in it that tasted like half and half and ruined any flavor that the mangoes held. The ice cream saved that sweet taste, but the sticky rice that lay below reminded me of a Rice Krispie treat that you found in a corner of your kitchen that was there for months and a friend dared you to take a bite. Disclaimer: You cannot eat the banana leaf...don't ask how we know. - Service: 4.25 / 5 When dining with someone who has a food allergy, you always worry about cross-contamination. Luckily, at Nicky's, even without disclosure, we had no issues at the end of the night. However, as the restaurant gets busy, the service definitely becomes slower, but if you have a great companion you honestly don't notice it. Nicky's also does a great job of not rushing you out the door as soon as the dessert has been finished and it seems each server helps the other servers if it becomes really busy, which isn't a bad system. It's worth noting there are standard charges including a pre-calculated tip, which is fairly common for restaurants of this style. - Vibe: 5 / 5 Nicky's is the exact reason why I started doing food reviews. By that, I mean I wanted to find interesting restaurants where you could sit down with other people, have a great conversation, enjoy some good food and just relax in the unique ambiance. - Overall: 4.25 / 5 My momma always said, "Thai food is a great indicator for a vibe check" and for my own personal add-on, "Great Thai food is how memories are made". If you are ever on the fence about certain people in your life, take them to Nicky's. By the end of the meal, you'll know where they stand. Recommend? Why is this even a question? Of course!

We had a horrible culinary experience the past couple of days driving through West Virginia, Ohio, and western New York. Pittsburgh was our last stop before heading home and Kiin Lao and Thai Eatery made up for all of the culinary disappointment this weekend. Let's talk about the ambiance first. Everything about this restaurant was quite beautiful. When I say beautiful, I don't mean it in an elegant way, but an artsy street vibe way. It is hip, clean, and we'll put together. You can tell a lot of love went into the decorations and into every piece of art on its walls. The service was pretty good. The server herself was attentive when needed and left us alone when needed. The food was AWESOME. We got the papaya combo with the Thum Mak Houng option, curry puffs, grilled pork shoulder with sticky rice, and Pad Gra Prow Street Style. The papaya was "lao-style" made with fermented shrimp paste. If you love deep umami flavors, this is it for you. The papaya salad was pungent and sour and savory spicy and just so satisfying. We asked for a 6/10 spiciness and they came with the heat. The chicken skewers that came with it was flavorful too. A little bit of char on the chicken would've brought it over the top. The curry puffs were so comforting and had that south Asian flavor profile that was very welcomed. The curry and spice blend did not overwhelm the potatoes. Instead it enhanced the earthy potato flavors in the best way possible. The menu said that it came with a cucumber sauce but I don't think we got that. What we got was a more like a honey sauce. The sauce was good in itself but didn't pair well with the puffs. The grilled pork shoulder was delectable. The meat was tender and it was seasoned perfectly. Again, more char on the meat would've brought it to a new level. The only gripe I have with this order was the sticky rice. The amount of sticky rice you get with it was so small I thought it was a joke initially. Nope, it was not! I thought the Pad Gra Prow Street Style was OKAY. I would've made it a little saucier. Despite this, my significant other absolutely LOVED it. Pad Gra Prow was my significant other's favorite dish when she lived overseas. She said that this was the best Pad Gra Prow she has had on this side of the world. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. We would definitely come by again when we are back this way.
