I can't believe I've never reviewed Red's! Been eating here well over 50 years now; my dad used to take me when I visited him at work near the Embarcadero many moons ago. Red's is a San Francisco icon. While no longer the gritty dive burger joint it was...it's not upscale. The double burger with cheese is still my go-to at Red's. Used to around a buck; now $13ish and still delish! Is it the best burger? Hell no but it is great on the sourdough just like old times. The outdoor seating on the pier is great in sunny weather with a view of the bay, bridge, and port of Oakland. We did a walk from Dog Patch to Red's (and back) to earn the calories for this deliciousness. Nice pretty scenic walk too. Enjoy! read more

There was barely any whiskey in it. The coffee was very watered down, and the whipped cream came out of a can. No sugar was added to the drink. I used to work on Market Street, so I would visit this gem almost monthly. It's hamburgers are one of the best in the Bay Area. There website says it best: There's nothing flashy about Red's. We have been here for a while ( over 70 years) doing the same thing and it still works. It's what makes us "us". You can get a Cheeseburger for $8.94, Garlic Fries - $5.43 They also have Chilli cheese burgers for $12.86 and Fish and Chips for $18.52. What sets this burger apart not to mention its incredible price is that Red's uses fresh sourdough rolls. And the burger comes with mustard and dill pickles. It's truely a work of art And the folks that work their are friendly and you can tell they take pride their business. Look there's a reason Red's has been around for 70 years. The interior feels timeless and real. The staff are super friendly. The food is simple but they're doing the thing their way. The cheeseburger comes simply dressed with raw onion, pickle, and mustard on a substantial kind of a roll. They don't serve tomato and lettuce so hard they even put up a sign so you know not to ask. The fries are a crispy shoestring number that reminded me of childhood trips to the Golden Arches in the best possible way. Both came out fast and piping hot. This place is great for what it is. Keep your expectations in check and you will love it as much as we do. It's our go to tradition before baseball games. We usually get some combination of a hamburger, a cheeseburger, fish and chips, fries, garlic, fries, and onion rings. Andof course, the beers. It's always very good. The buns they use for the burgers are delicious. Their fries are good. The beers are reasonably priced as is everything. Zero complaints. It does totally bug me they won't give you lettuce and tomato on your burger, but whatever it's their thing. Just go. Understand that before a game there will be a line so you will have to be prepared to wait. And you will have to deal with the annoying people who sit there hogging a table even though they don't have their food yet, which is beyond the pale, but that's how people are. But that is not the fault of the restaurant. Note, you can get burgers all day, which is a big plus for me. If you're there for the drinking and partying on the outside patio... Which is pretty spacious... Just be patient as it's a small place and it takes them a while to get through all those drink orders. I debated between a four and a five. A "Diamond in the rough" is a term fitting for this site. I was able to seem like cool guy to my Pi Kappa Phi pledge brothers. We had such a good time getting down to the waters edge at the pier, frolicking, exploring working up an appetite. Which was lucky for everyone as the burger on sourdough was one of the best I've ever had and same for my LA homies that were with me. Reds is truly a cult classic! My first visit to Reds was back in 2004 and I'm desperately trying to figure out how I found out about Reds 20 years ago. I've affectionately referred to Reds as being able to buy the "adult happy meal " since I can get a burger, fries, and a beer. Food is good and beer is cold. There were a lot more people than I remember frequenting Reds. A lot more people! Prices are extremely reasonable, customers are very friendly, but as I said it just has a true cult following. Red's Java House is such a historic place along the SF waterfront. Despite living in the Bay Area for decades, we finally got the chance to experience this classic American diner. The ambience here really takes you back to the '50s, with red vinyl seatings, and photos and memorabilia on the walls. I read that the latest owner tried to ''modernize' the place but encountered fierce resistance from loyal customers. It is like a place where time stood still. Anthony Bourdain made this place famous when he dined here and praised the diner. As for the food, the menu presents many American classics but with a local twist. For example, the burger and hot dogs are served in sourdough bread rather than the conventional buns. We ordered the double burger, double dogs, fish and chips (french fries) and an order of onion rings, and they were good for the kind of American comfort food you expect. You'll definitely want to keep an eye out for the birds looking for a snack! Apparently, Red's is a real discussion starter on social media... much could be settled if they hung a pic of "Red" lol The authenticity of fish and chips was a whole nother issue but let me say... Re's Java House is a San Francisco iconic place on the dock of San Francisco Bay. I am embarrassed to admit I have lived in San Francisco since 2001. My eldest son is a French fried expert. He flies 777 commercial airline and has been on 5 continents, tasting what the world has to offer culinary wise. Today, a cold raining and flooding February, he drove up to San Francisco to have lunch. I asked him where he wanted to have a late lunch? He immediately said, "Have you ever been to Red's Java House?" I responded "no never". We set out to check the hut like structure beneath the Willie Brown Bay Bridge. It was pouring down sheets of water, and we dashed out of our car. Fortunately, I found street parking on The Embarcadero about 30 feet from the front door. Well, we enter, and it honestly felt like we were stepping back to the 1940s a decade after the cafe had survived fires, waterfront development, and a global pandemic! Wow! We stepped up to the counter after reading the menu posted on the wall. We were greeted by Samuel with a big smile and understanding that I was a Red's Java House "virgin" and was very patience. I ordered the fish & Chips and my bieg-a-terian 6'2" son orders two orders of delicious French fries and a Coke. We sat next to the Bay window looking out at the Bay. Classic. There is able seating with diner style stool with vinyl coverings, photos of two many celebrities, movie stars and musicians. I did note several candid photos of the late Anthony Bourdain chomping on a burger and a beer----a tradition for 90 years. I walked in the back and noted amble seating on the dock where my son shared he enjoyed previous visits when it was sunny---perhaps with a Jimmy Buffett type band playing Margaritaville and sucking down some cold ones. Red's Java House was purchased from its original owner from a former news boy Tom "Red" McGarvey and his brother Mike in 1955 hence its current name. I believe Red's Java House should be a National Historic Site for Good food, friendly service, friend & family gathering and incredible views! Back then, dock workers and bankers sat with there feet hanging off the dock. A diamond in the rough. A oasis. To an old SF guy like me, I am happy to say that Reds is still intact and even better with outdoor seating overlooking the million dollar view. it's all about the environment and on the outside it's a dusty 5 star. The food is basic 3 star stuff. It's service at the counter and delivered. Burgers, Dogs, Fries etc. I had a dog, fries and a can of soda for like 11 bucks I was in and out in 25 minute. But, again, it's about. the view. Add a drink or two, sit in the sun and the food does not matter. read more

May 28 was National Hamburger Day, so my friends and I went out to celebrate by getting some ... beers. And then we got some burgers! At Red's Java House. Red's Java House is one of those places you always hear about, tell people you're going to add to you "list" and then forget about. You know what I'm talking about. Well, I can finally move Red's from my imaginary "must try" list to my imaginary "have tried" list. The weather on National Hamburger Day was pretty sad - cloudy and cold (it is San Francisco, after all)- but we stayed warm with a few rounds of beer, burgers, and chili cheese fries. The burgers at Red's are unique. The "bun" is a sourdough roll! It's actually quite a tasty combo. You can get a hamburger or cheeseburger, a single or double, with limited toppings. I got a single, and although I enjoyed my burger, I would get a double next time, as I found the bread-to-meat ratio to be a bit heavy on the bread. The chili cheese fries were all right, but there were A LOT OF BEANS, so beware! Red's has an indoor and outdoor area. The indoor area has quite a bit of character with elements of SF history among its decor. The outdoor area is spacious and has a full bar, looking out at the Bay Bridge. I can only imagine how nice it would be on a sunny day. The staff at Red's was very friendly and efficient. Red's isn't fancy, but it's definitely got an old San Francisco vibe. It took me nine years to get to Red's for the first time, so don't be like me. Go there now. read more

Lets start with the bottom line: it's a small business trying to survive in a very expensive city. I don't live close, but I'd go back, under the right conditions: warm day before a giants game with some buddies who wanted to drink beer in a casual anti-momos setting. (They do have a full bar). $17 and change. Double hamburger (both patties totaled ~1/3 lb) on a quality sour dough roll that was about a 1/3 of a long loaf. Shoestring fries. Crispy and salty. Water. To date myself- It's been awhile and I used to eat here when old man Red ran it. He used to roast coffee beans in the front. I always joked that you got a free (single patty) burger with your beer. The combo was $5. The buns were on the best sour dough rolls in SF. They toasted em on the griddle and then the meat was placed in it and was finished by being steamed under the tin dome on the griddle. It made the bun a bit chewy and with the meat, pickles, onions, and mustard-- it was spectacular. And now it's just a memory. Just like the bar next door used to be the Boon Docks. I got there around noon and I was the only person there. Total bummer. The bread, was quality, was only toasted. The meat, well, it was there. The fries were good and enough for 2. The meal was filling, but mostly by the carbs. Didn't really taste the meat. Not seeing the suits, bike messengers, or brown loafers-button up - and blue jean crew means I think they are competing against the standard burger w/ff in SF which is 18-25 and around their price point. Then we saw the infamous Red's Java House like a beacon calling to us, so of course my friend and I strolled in. We got a cheeseburger to share (they were nice enough to split it in half for us); onion rings (also to share); and got us some bottles of beers. While some of the food is somewhat lackluster (cheeseburger was not good, but onion rings are great!!!) the divvy atmosphere, the beers, the people, the somewhat aggressive pigeons honing in on us, sitting by the water, and definitely the day spent together with my friend--awesome! read more

I had researched places to eat while in San Francisco on vacation & had bookmarked Red's JH as one of the restaurants to check out because the prices were budget friendly & the majority of the previous reviews given were positive. Well, I can report that Red's Java House did not disappoint! We visited on 08/19/2022 & the food was fresh, hot, and very delicious. We ordered the fish (cod)& chips special, cheeseburger, and onion rings (definitely recommend onion rings). The portion sizes were just enough. I also ordered a margarita that was very tasty & made me feel a little bit prettier ;). You order your food once you come inside at the front counter but the bar is located in the back by the outdoor patio. There is plenty of seating indoors & outside, along w/ umbrellas that open up for shade if you decide to enjoy your food outside. It's a very casual spot located on the pier, next door to the Bay Bridge & was nice getting to enjoy our food outside. The decor was very interesting w/ old photos of past celebrities & added to the charm of Red's Java House. One the day we visited it wasn't very crowded but there were a few others just hanging out on the back patio, enjoying their food & drinks. An SF staple! They've got charm, and the vibe/dive checks out, but unfortunately the food leaves something to be desired. I ordered their famous double cheeseburger, which comes on a sourdough loaf. The meat was thin, dry, and overcooked. The addition of fries and a side of chili and beans brought this "casual" meal to just over $25. Which is obviously too much for what it is. That said, a burger on a beer on the back patio in the summertime will have you feeling like happiest skipper on the sea, and that alone salvages the experience.
