Was visiting Denver along with a friend who immigrated from Russia. She was beyond excited to have Russian food she didn't have to make at home. But I knew she'd be a tough critic as well. The restaurant was oddly empty for a Wednesday, with only one other group dining, and we were there during prime dinner time. But that meant our group of six we had a very attentive server, and she was great. We started with a host of appetizers including herring, all the pickled vegetables on offer, pierogis, and cabbage rolls. And a carafe of horseradish vodka, of their many house made infused vodka options. It was so delicious we got a second order of most of the appetizers. After so many starters, we went light on entrees, getting two beef stroganoffs and a lamb shank to share. Plus yet another cabbage rolls (they really were that good). Our resident Russian felt the entrees were far less traditional (she said they never ate lamb in her fed eastern part of Russia, and the stroganoff was a modern tale that was more of a steak with sides vs stew like) but we all agreed the modern tales were completely delicious, especially the mushroom sauce on the stroganoff. We finished with all three desserts available- a layered honey cake (deemed modern but tasty) a chocolate pot de crème (insanely delicious but not russian) and an off menu item of ice cream cake with a plum sauce It was a really lovely meal and I was so full I could barely get up to leave. read more

We came here for dinner for my partner's birthday since he has Eastern European ancestry and we love that kind of food! We got the herring, golubtsi, lamb shank, and pork schnitzel. The Lamb Shank was my favorite. So tender and flavorful. The cabbage roll was a bit disappointing for the price. It was one roll for $12, which this dish is usually made in batches for a fraction of the price. Everything else was good. We loved the selection of infused vodka. My partner's favorite was the horseradish infused one! One thing to note is that this is downtown, so street parking is the main option. We found a spit easily two blocks down on a Tuesday night. AMAZING FOOD. I have not consistently found good Eastern European food outside SF/NY. While I didn't get to try the whole menu I did order 4 things and everything was delicious. I wish I could return and slowly try everything as I'm sure you can't miss with any order. The pierogies were hands down the best I've ever had. The white wine sauce gives it such an elevated and rich layer that you just don't find at other restaurants or grandmas home cooking. I will crave these and be bummed I can't easily access them. We got here at 9:30 on a Tuesday night and got seated at the bar with one other patron. The kitchen closed at 9, so we looked at the drink menu. There is an impressive selection of vodkas here. On the top of the menu was 21 house infused with different fruit, herbs, spices, and botanicals. These span from the more typical (lemon, orange) to very interesting (sea buckthorn berry, chokeberry) to way out there (horseradish, red pepper). Below that is a massive list of 60+ vodkas from around the world. You can also get mixed drinks. To say I was intimidated by the sheer amount of choice on the menu would be an understatement. Thankfully, the general manager sensed our need for a recommendation. We tried quite a few different kinds. Each were served ice cold in an iced shot glass. The non-sweet ones came with some sliced pickles as a chaser. I am by no means a vodka connoisseur, but these were my thoughts. Horseradish - their most popular infusion. This varies from batch to batch on heat level. I thought ours had a very pleasant horseradish flavor with little to no kick/pungency. Jewel of Russia - a very clean almost flavorless vodka. Reyka - the manager's tasting notes - this Icelandic vodka is filtered with lava rock and has some minerality to it. Sea Buckthorn - we're used to infusing vodkas for limoncello, so we were recommended this citrusy one. Chokeberry - reminiscent of wine Vincent Espresso - we mentioned that we really liked a limited edition Coffee liquor from Hangar One and we were recommended this one. This one is quite sweet with good coffee flavor, but a nice ending to our tasting experience. All in all, their selection is so diverse, I think you'll find a few things that you love. Upscale and pricey Russian Bistro. The Red Square is illustrated through a red colored theme that runs through the restaurant. It is classy, sophisticated and just on this side of minimalist. We started with a Moscow Mule (how can I, a Mule fanatic, not take a Mule in a Russian place?), a Reisling from Germany and a Jameson. For an appetizer, we ordered the Zukeski board. We got the Chicken Kiev, the lamb rack and the Ghoulash for the main course. The Mule is the smoothest mule I've ever had. I loved it. The vodka and ginger beer combine so smoothly, it slowly hits you as a surprise a lot later :) the Reisling was good too. I didn't taste my brother's Jameson because I can't do whisky but he took two, so he liked it. The Zukeski board was interesting. The veggies on it came with a hidden wasabi(?) sauce which looked nothing like it. So when my brother took a big dollop of it, he suffered the consequences. The Stilton cheese had herbs added to it, which was really good. Of the entrees, my chicken Kiev was the best. My brothers felt it was a bit over cooked, but it was perfect for me. The mashed potatoes are again the smoothest things I've had. Comes with carrots and mushrooms in a sauce that made everything on the plate better. The lamb rack was ordered medium rare but felt more rare to eat because it was chewy. The taste of it was good and the side salad and potatoes were very very good. The Ghoulash was a bit disappointing for my brother. He found the beef overcooked and the plate unsalty. I personally found the beef chewy as I always do, but I liked the sauce. It had an Indian curry feel to it and I would've liked salt. But I finished that plate too We got both desserts available - the lemon tart and the chocolate mousse/parfait(?). The lemon tart was delicious - lemony to the right amount, not over sweet and thin crust so we could enjoy the lemon more. The chocolate was too chocolate-y for me. My cousin loved it though. All in all, could've been a higher review but the entrees weren't perfect. The final price for 3 came up to $166 so be prepared to shell out money. read more

But here I am! At $5 a shot, you can try a bunch of infusions. They are delicious as they are varied. I had the beet, dill, fig, and honey vodkas. I may have had more, but I do not recall as I was drinking straight vodka, attempting to counteract its effects by eating several of the pickle slices they serve on the side. Decided to try this place before a symphony performance because it looked interesting. The reviews were hit and miss so I was a little worried but my husband and I really enjoyed our dinner. The restaurant was kind of dark and luckily not busy when we were there. We started with a dill martini and a horseradish martini, not because they sounded good but because they sounded crazy. We didn't actually like the way they tasted BUT they tasted exactly like they should and were glad we tried them. Next time we'll try shots instead. We also ordered a White Russian with cinnamon vodka which was delicious. Our server wasn't wearing a name tag so I don't remember his name but he was super friendly and attentive. We ordered the pierogi appetizer, I can see why some people wouldn't like them because they have a simple ricotta filling but I loved it. They have a terrific happy hour (do yourself a favor and order the Zakuski platter) and you can't go wrong with any of their house-infused vodka choices.
