Red Stripe was recommended to me by a local, and boy am I glad we went! The menu looks delicious, but one of the best features is they're daily specials. Thursday night really caught my eye. $10 for burger, side (fries or salad), and a red stripe. You really can't beat that! I figured I would be sacrificing taste for such a good deal, and boy was I wrong! The food is delicious, even the salad- it was fresh and so on point. Good solid food. A providence staple on the east side. We went with friends on a Friday night and food took a long time and service on drinks etc during the wait spotty for sure. I ordered the stuffed shrimp and four came in an aluminum tin and I had to ask the server if that was normal (and it was) but the presentation had it looking like it was brought from a clam shack. read more

I hardly feel compelled to write an updated review but today Red Stripe has been demoted from 4 to 2 stars. I feel that after my experience here today I will not be eating here again. After my initial visit in 2014, I decided to give the restaurant another try. There were tons of people here so we felt that the quality of food must have at least stayed the same if not improved. The menu was very familiar and does not appear to have changed in the last 3 years. Tonight we ordered the mushroom pizza, french onion soup, beef stroganoff and the gnocchi. The mushroom pizza was otherwise a great pizza but was overly sweet with the glaze of honey on top. The honey simply overpowered the dish. I might recommend reducing the amount or eliminating the honey all together. The beef stroganoff was an extreme disappointment. The sauce was watery and underseasoned. I will say that the pasta itself was well made but there was not enough seasoning. The gnocchi on the other hand was over seasoned and required multiple cups of water before you could complete the dish. I think the only done well tonight were the fries. Parmesan truffle fries which were delicious and possibly the only saving grace during dinner. The service also was strangely poor tonight as well. Our waiter was seemingly uninterested in our experience. Plates were plopped in front of us and people promptly walked away. When told about our disappointment in the stroganoff dish, there was no acknowledgement. The only thing that came quickly to us was the bill. As you'll see with my reviews, I try to provide some constructive criticism. I just didn't feel that those working here at Red Stripe had a vested interest in ensuring people would enjoy their food. For take-out this week we enjoyed the cobb salad, we loved the frites and the tomato soup, and damn! those crispy artichokes were killer. This was my first time visiting this restaurant. We sat outside for lunch during restaurant week in Providence. The menu for restaurant week had a variety of choices and the prices were great 3 courses for $16.95. The regular menu had some great options too but decided to order from the special menu. I ordered Caesar salad, naked burger and dessert. Everything was good but the French fries were amazing! We each ordered desserts I got the chocolate one which was okay but the other dessert vanilla something was outstanding! The waitress was very pleasant but could have been a bit more attentive. We ended up waiting for more drinks and the check. She did have both inside and outside tables which may have caused this. The inside of the seemed fun! I write this review after many visits to Red Stripe so my experience is not the 'One-off' experience and feedback. For years Red Stripe in Wayland Square has been my weekend 'go-to' for lunch. Lately, it has become a place I go to for dinner during the summer months. The food is always fresh, and the bar service is exceptional. The bartender Stephanie is one of the most attentive bar staff I have ever had the pleasure of being served by. Accompanying her at the restaurant in the kitchen is her husband Ben who previously worked at Chez Pascal (Providence, RI). He is a nice addition to the kitchen and his influence can be tasted in the upgrades to the menu. The rest of the staff are also good. I typically go in for a weekend lunch and again try to stay ahead of the crowd. Given that the restaurant serves the East Side of Providence and residents with disposable income, it can get busy. This is a place where I have a set ritual and generally eat 2-3 items off the menu. I can't judge the other items so any comments I make are restricted to what I've eaten. I usually start with a Rob Roy as opposed to a Manhattan because Stephanie does such a good job making the cocktail - using Luxardo Maraschino cherries rather than the chemically-laden neon red-dyed cherries. I often order the (gluten-free) Deviled Eggs with truffle, bacon, and chives as my small plate appetizer. I then order the Steak Frites with the bordelaise butter. This meal is my version of steak and eggs. I eat red meat once a week at most and red Strip is one of two places I elect to do so. My meal is always at the correct temperature and flavorful. When I am there for dinner, my meal of choice is the Lemon Rosemary 1/2 Chicken. This is served with a serving of a sauce for the chicken which elevates the taste of the bird. Not sure what's in it, but it's good. My preference to accompany the chicken is the greens which are also prepared well and fresh and are not over-dressed. The other dish I've tried is the Linguine & Clams which I generally only have during the summer months. It's filled with clams and hydrated well with an adequate amount of white wine butter sauce. My one desire in this dish is I wish it had more garlic - but that is a personal preference that I suspect is hard for the kitchen to meet for every customer. Again, I eat on the early side of the dinner and lunch hours so that I catch the kitchen and wait staff at a time when they are not overburdened with demanding customers. I am not sure how my experience would change if I went at other times. There are a lot of tables in the front dining area and reducing the number of tables would make the space feel less crowded and easier for customers and staff to navigate. So I want to love this place so bad, it is right in my neighborhood and so convenient. I have been here twice, both times for lunch and both times I left disappointed. The first time I got the lunch combo deal and was very disappointed in my choices. I just went back yesterday thinking the first time was just a fluke.... well this time was no better. I got the clam chowder which I will agree with others, was full of delicious clams and had a great flavor but it was warm, and I like my soup hot! I also got an order of crab cakes, which I had two bites of and had to push off to the side... they were so dry, overcooked and barely edible. I decided to try out the Red Strip since it was participating in Providence Restaurant Week and I was pleasantly surprised! (Don't forget to make a reservation!) My date and I were seated outside and it was a beautiful night for an al fresco meal! My first course started off with a Caesar Salad, which was tasty and the portion was sufficient. Next, the second course was the Atlantic Salmon and boy was this entree filled with great flavor! The meal consisted of charred corn & jalapeno saffron rice, (salmon was placed on top of rice) petite arugula and avocado salsa. Lastly, for dessert I picked the Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate which consisted of Chocolate ice cream, chocolate sauce, shaved chocolate and whipped cream. What a great way to top of a great meal! The Moules Billy Bi contained mussels that were plump, but the frites were also saturated with salt. How salty was this food? Not realizing the price jump from $19 to $24 (that bit of info seems to be buried on their website under "latest news"), I was surprised when I got the bill for sure, but paid and went home. A few bites in, my husband had the same misfortune I had last summer with the lobster; fin cartilage in the claw meat. I expect for that much cash, the lobster is picked clean and that sort of stuff removed. Now. This is the third and final strike for us, and it makes me sad to say that. The last few meals we've had there (the last time was mid-December 2016), have been disappointing at best, but we just kept going with the hopes that maybe it was an "off night". I hope they look at the reviews of late, both here and on other sites, and start paying attention to the issues people are bringing up. read more

I heard this place was famous for its mussels - and when in Rome, do as Romans do - I ordered Full order of Portuguese Mussels. The broth was sooo tasty, and mussels fresh. It also came with the most delicious fries. I try to be open minded when I eat out, but I am SUPER picky about my Manhattans. This place knows how to make a martini. Just not the best in Providence. Deep fried polenta and chicken for an app was a terrible mistake. I won't recommend it, my friend said "I feel like I'm eating a heart attack!!" After four years and several more tries, Red Stripe has earned another star in my book. Why? Lunch, guys -- they make a great lunch. Red Stripe is fun -- it's bustling, it's energetic, it's loud. The open kitchen and giant bar create a lively atmosphere and the servers who hustle to-and-fro in their clean, crisp linens add a touch of elegance to everything. I complained about the service in my previous review, and while I can't say it's anything perfect, they definitely try. They're friendly, the know the menu and they bring you what you asked for. The highlights for me? The moules (any of the umpteen options on the menu -- they're all gorgeous) and the French Onion Soup. What can I say? The chef obviously has a knack for a good broth. While I'm not as big a fan of the grilled cheese as a lot of yelpers seem to be, I will go back again and again for their Kitchen Sink salad and aaaaaaaaah-mazing frittes. Don't go here looking for an intimate, romantic, quiet meal -- this is a loud bistro with a fast turnover and a big menu and beer list. Breathe it in, and enjoy. read more

It's obvious to me that they're more interested in the "feed 'em and show 'em the door" turn and burn clientele, not loyal repeat business. I wanted Red Stripe to be my favorite "go to" restaurant for birthdays, special occasions, etc. I've enjoyed every meal I've had there. And in that spirit, when a friend of mine's special occasion came up, I thought it would be the perfect place to celebrate. I called and asked them if they could take my party of 12 people (over two weeks in advance) for a Saturday evening, and the reply I received was less than accommodating. First of all, they told me that they would have to split the party up into two round tables. Then I asked why they couldn't put us against the wall in the newly opened section...a photograph of which they posted on their Facbook page. It would have been perfect - push a few tables together against the wall...bam...success. But no they wouldn't do that. No explanation why, just no. Then, to make sure that I understood that they didn't want my business, they told me that I could have this little two-table event at either 5:30 or 8:30. Period. Wow. So, I am cutting up my Red Stripe frequent diner card. I guess I'll keep looking for my "go to" restaurant of choice. read more

Red Stripe was a consistent "fancy-ish dinner" favorite during my college years. Spoiler alert- it's because they surreptitiously serve 40's of Colt 45 (in paper bags, even). Everyone will find something they like here. You can't go wrong with the steak frites, but my favorite is the Red Stripe moules (w/ their accompanying frite friends). Try pouring a little malt liquor into the broth. The tomato soup, grilled cheese, spinach salad, and sweet potato latkes all get thumbs up, too. We both know it was kind of an abusive relationship--what with your lack of a parking lot and your spotty service. Several times I could tell my grilled cheese had been put in the microwave. Still, I forgave you for these transgressions. I told my friends that you would change. You would be better. But my most recent visit was the last straw for me, I'm afraid. I knew your tomato soup tasted funny when I was eating it (too much vinegar?), but when I got home and started feeling sick, I REALLY knew I shouldn't have been eating it. So long Red Stripe.
