After anticipating this evening for the week, I was quite disappointed with my meal here. We ordered one drink for my pretty traveling companion, a Cosmo. She said it was very good. However, our soups were a tale of two different stories. My date's tomato soup was hot, my clam chowder was lukewarm. The bread that the waiter told us was a little late in arriving (due to it needing to be warmed) was not all that warm. Moving to the dinner, once again...my gal's paella was hot, my steak was lukewarm. My frites were very, very salty, too. We did not order dessert. Waitstaff was pleasant, attentive and a strong positive for the evening. Surroundings were lovely. Restaurant was easily found. Having done the usual trek into Providence, but not wanting to do the usual dining on Federal Hill (nothing wrong with that, but was looking for something different), checked out the menu for Red Stripe online and saw it was exactly what we were looking for on this visit. Even though we didn't have a reservation, we were able to get seated within a few minutes of arriving. Sitting down we began to look more closely at what this place had to offer and not just what was on the menu. The dining room isn't very large, but it's big with plenty of room between the tables (although you can still check out what others are having in case you are getting stuck) and a fun view of the open kitchen. The decor was comfortable and a mix of the old with the new. Turning to the menu for a serious perusal will daunt even the most experienced restaurant goer not from its size rather from all the perfect choices. I decided upon the Heuvos Ranchos that used a quesadilla to put a tasty spin on this classic. My better half got the Eggs Benedict Florentine that has a roasted tomato at its heart that takes it over the top. My oldest got the Bread Pudding French Toast that literally melts in your mouth. Her girlfriend went simpler with just yogurt drizzled with honey and covered with granola and berries that was a hit. My other daughter got the Fine Herb omelet that hit only high notes. And last, my youngest got Tomato Soup with Grilled Cheese that everyone agree was perfect with the havarti cheese. On top of the food being good, the service was great, from being given a table quickly to checking the right amount of times during the meal to see if we needed anything. Definitely planning on returning some Sunday and looking forward to trying the Moules and Frites. Fun and delicious, Red Stripe makes itself a destination and we'll be back. read more

A perfect find! I'm visiting the Providence area for the day and happened upon a blog suggestion for Red Stripe-I'm so glad I came here! I went all out--started with the amazingly warm, freshly cut sourdough and butter, had the spinach salad-with poached pears, bacon, carmelized onions, and a perfectly tart red wine vinaigrette (and I hate salad dressing...)-then rounded it out with the Red Stripe grilled cheese! Prosciutto, more poached pears, basil aioli and a delicious cheesy middle--to die for! I dined alone, visiting the area for work, and had a great time talking to Aaron, who was willing to give suggestions of other places to visit in the area and made me feel very welcome! This is one of my favorite restaurants in Providence. Great for brunch, lunch, and dinner and has filling food options for a good price range ($10 to $28). Some of my favorite comfort foods from here are: the red stripe burger, the veggie wrap with wood-grilled chicken added, the croque madam, the duck confit, the meat and potatoes, the shepard's pie, and the mussels. Dessert is average; I would skip. If you have a big group, call for a reservation. This a very popular spot, bustling spot. Be sure to ask about the rewards program (Red Stripe and Mills Tavern). A quick meal for one at the bar. A small salad with steak on top. Sounds easy, right? 40 minutes later, it finally shows up (5 minutes after I mentioned that I was still waiting). No particular apology, no acknowledgement of the ridiculous wait. I eat there all the time, and on occasion it's a bit slow when busy, but this was ludicrous. Simple rule - single person at the bar = take care of them quickly. Mess that up = show some contrition. There aren't many other places in walking distance, but I left feeling like this establishment could care less about my business. I have a loyalty card with a lot of points on it, but have no desire to return any time soon. read more

I LOVE Red Stripe!! I've been going here for several years now and it hasn't let me down yet! The staff is always nice, the food is always great and I always have the best time here. First of all, the bread is delicious! Warm and home-made, it's the perfect start to the meal. My favorites on the menu are the grilled cheese (with pear and proscuitto! YUM!) and the moules mariniere (dunk the bread into the juice... to die for!), but I've gotten many other wonderful dishes there (incl. the steak frites, the bolognese and the salmon among many). I haven't tried any of the cocktails, but the waiters are excellent at recommending wines to accompany the meal. It is a little loud in there I suppose, so it's best to go with a smaller group, but the atmosphere is great! One of my absolute favorites in Providence!! read more

I'm close to giving this 4 stars, but I have to knock one off because of the price. This is pretty casual dining that makes itself out to be more high-end than it really is. Whatever, it's in Wayland Square and that pretty much goes with the territory, but you do pay for it. Things I like here: the shepherd's pie, which is actually made with duck, the hangar steak (when they don't overcook it) and the grilled cheese with frites (not a fan of the tomato soup). They have an extensive menu with a lot of options. My girlfriend also likes the mussels, so they get points there. In general, not too much bad I can say about the food, I'm rarely disappointed, but I've also never been blown away. Other meals: dessert here is imported from Boston, specifically Finale. If you've had Finale you know how good it is. It's definitely a plus but I find it hard to give Red Stripe credit for it, they are basically just paying for someone else's desserts, freezing it, and charging you for the privilege of eating in Providence. Had Sunday brunch here one day and was not impressed, just found very little to like about it. Can't remember what I ordered, I believe it was the hash, but I left hungry. I usually don't mention service, because to me it doesn't matter. If the food is good and the waiter doesn't drop my plate on my chest, I'm good. However, one time I did order takeout, the guy had me pay for my order, then simply left. I waited around for 15 minutes before a CHEF called me over and asked me if I had ordered the grilled cheese, turns out it had been ready since I'd got there and the waiter simply hadn't bothered to let me know. Red Stripe is good... but not great. I see this pattern quite frequently in hyped up Providence eateries. Anyways, I am digressing. I always get the Red Stripe grilled cheese when my friends want to come here. I always finish it, even though the frites I get with it are too salty, and the sandwich is too hard and greasy. Once, I got the "Everything but the kitchen sink" salad. Something (I'm not sure what) was pickled, and the liquid it was pickled in totally burned the lower part of my upper lip. It was way too acidic. I didn't notice it as I was eating it, and I enjoyed the strong taste of that particular veggie. However, the next day, the part of my lip that came into contact with the veggie had a leathery texture to it (chemical burn?). This was strange, because nothing like this has ever happened before. I should've payed more attention to what I was eating. Lesson learned! I LOVED their panzanella salad. I recommend splitting it with a friend. They split it into 2 separate plates, and its HUGE. This is my 'go to' restaurant in Providence. We probably eat here 2-3 times a month. The menu is broad and almost everything on it is good. I think it is fairly priced, and the service is almost always good. I like the ambiance as well. Recommend: All of the mussels, the FRITES!, the red stripe grilled cheese, the tomato soup. All great. Open faced hanger steak sandwich also a fav. Linguini w/clams is good. Skip: The sweet potato latkes... Fail. Calamari is not great either. Definitely worth a visit. Or a bunch. My review is based on several visits between July and October of this year. I live about a block away from Red Stripe. I'm rooting for them. I'm a fan, OK? I want this restaurant to be an easy 5-star review, but instead I'm giving a very reserved 4-star. The big problem is inconsistency. I have had the onion soup twice. The first time it was excellent, really the best I've ever had. The second time, overly salty and the cheese was strangely bland. Sat at the bar many times and sampled the chicken liver pate, the Nicoise salad, the calamari...all excellent. Then the crabcakes, which just sucked. I mean, needlessly sucked. Little over-fried room temperature balls of cat food. Their signature grilled cheese was outstanding the first time I tried it, and a greasy gut-busting mess the second time. The chowder is crap. Chuck that recipe and start over. The frites are consistently awesome. Brunch items (esp. their version of Eggs Benedict) are just outstanding. The decor is very nice. Yes, it's a little noisy, but that's because it's BUSY...deal with it. Staff...again, inconsistent. Table service is great. Waiters, waitresses, hostesses...all great. Very polite, quick, and my favorite...unobtrusive. Bar staff uniformly rude, inattentive, and unprofessional. It's like the waitstaff are 5-star and the bartenders should be working at Hooters. The restaurant is always busy so expect to wait unless you have reservations which you can book online. Tip: This restaurant has two dining rooms. The first room when you enter the restaurant is very large, has a large bar. The acoustics in the room make it extremely loud and it can be hard to hear the person next to you. The second dining room to the back left of the restaurant has a separate smaller bar and the acoustics appear to be much better. I was there last week for a business event. The room, was just awkward. They should reconsider the limit of people in the room to make it more comfortable. The food was good, but not fabulous. My chicken was a little dry. My favorite part of the meal was the cheese platter and the creme brûlée. The service was outstanding. Thank you Red Stripe for a fantastic Thanksgiving experience! We ordered two, take-out 3 course meals (with dessert of course :) to share in our 3 person family (2 omnivores, 1 vegetarian.) Everything was delicious, and the process was seamless. Pleasant and professional interactions while ordering, confirming (they called me before I needed to call them, which I always do since having our Thanksgiving reservation lost at a different establishment a few years back), and curbside pick-up. I'm not sure what the big deal is about this place is. My mom insisted I take her to Red Stripe for Mothers day lunch, and quite frankly I wasn't really that impressed. Don't get me wrong, my tomato soup and Cobb Salad where pretty good, but the fact I went with salad and soup says a lot. Nothing on the menu really grabbed me and said: " YOU NEED TO EAT THIS." I will say my shot of espresso was on point and the server was really nice, but one more complaint: Drain flies. You heard me. I was trying to eat and they kept flying around our table, because somewhere nearby they must have a dirty ass drain that needs to be cleaned. Please don't think I mean "fruit flies", because I know what a fruit fly is. :/ if you don't believe me please Google what a drain fly is, and once you do that you'll figure out why I'm mentioning it. I really wanted to like this place since my daughter loves their signature Grilled Cheese and a tomato soup but I couldn't fulfill myself with their poor quality burger I had for lunch this afternoon. I had a truffle burger with salad this afternoon, it was extremely dry and the mushrooms on top of the patty got all burnt out. The salad that I chose instead of fries was good though. I used to love Red Stripe. But things have definitely changed for the worse in the last few years. It is two things really I have noticed - a decline in service and food quality - the two most important things restaurants have going for them. I have given them passes- the food taking a inordinate amount of time to arrive, servers who have disappeared, etc. But this afternoon's brunch was just the last nail in the coffin for me for this place. Our waiter was very friendly, but not super attentive - though it was very busy and it appeared there may have not been enough servers on hand. I ordered my burger medium, and it arrived after about a 40 minute wait way over cooked and dry (see picture). My boyfriend's eggs were ordered over-medium, and those were also clearly over cooked (again, see picture). Also his pulled pork hash was very tasty. But, oddly, the bottom was burnt black, while inexplicably, nothing on the plate was hot. We were so hungry we ate what was set in front of us. We did save some on our plates to show our waiter, and he comped the drinks (a mimosa and a coffee) which was very good of him, especially since he isn't the one overcooking the food. However, when there is a complaint like that, I always feel that the more appropriate thing would be for the manager to come over to the table as opposed to leaving the waiter to remedy a situation that is not his fault or responsibility. The manager appeared to be MIA. So, sorry, Red Stripe. We are done here. Providence is a great foodie town, and for me and my money, you are not making the cut anymore. read more

Been here with several different people on different occasions ( lunch, Mother's Day etc) and had a great experience each time. Nice clean open set up with white table cloths and seating that ranges from on the sidewalk to more discreet tables in the rear. Not a huge menu but that's a good sign to me. Large menus make me nervous. Anyway,the grilled cheese and tomato soup hit the spot on a cold winter day in January. The sandwich was perfect with lots of tasty cheese and grilled bread. The tomato soup was full of flavor. Truffle fries are solid. My son and i stopped in recently on a drive by and again the food and service were very good. i had the veal meat ball and pasta. The meatball was excellent. Without an over abundance of bread crumbs the flavor of the meat came through. The pasta and sauce were also delicious. Coming off a very busy weekend at Brown the restaurant was out of some items but it was understandable. My son opted for the salmon and was very pleased. He's particular about his fish. The fresh bread that is served prior to your meal is a plus Id give this place a 5 if it had a better bar set up though many people came and drank and ate at the bar in the times i was there. I like a little separation between the bar and main dining area. Personal choice i guess. In the warm weather you can dine al fresco. read more

The food was really good but the service and atmosphere were terrible. The restaurant was having a heating problem and failed to tell us. It was freezing in there. Then, it was clear that they were understaffed because our waitress NEVER brought our drinks after reminding her three times - she was running around like crazy while the two hosts were just standing there watching. The food took an hour and it was stone cold when we got it - cold eggs. When I sent my food back it came back perfect but that's because the host finally got involved and rushed it to the table (the waitress was just too darn busy for us). Alas, I think while the food was good (after the chilly eggs were remade) but this restaurant needs to step up the service or it's coming out of the rotation. read more

We used to LOVE this restaurant. It was always a pleasant experience with good food and good service. Our last experience, however, has proven to be very disappointing. I wouldn't write a review based on one bad experience except that I emailed the restaurant first and never got a reply. Our last visit was for a 30th birthday. We reserved Red Stripe because it was one of our favorites. When the food came, it was terrible. The mussels were way too big and everyone eating them at our table had bad ones. The guest of honor had two bad mussels in a row and therefore was too put off to eat any more. The fries were cold and were definitely not frites. The majority of our party barely put a dent in their meals. Then the table was cleared without a word about why we had left so much food. I didn't want to make a scene during the party, so I simply paid for the meal and decided to write to them afterwards. I've heard they've changed management and it certainly shows. I'm extremely disappointed to have had such a terrible experience without even an acknowledgement or apology. read more

I remembered this place fondly from my last visit to Providence, 5 years ago. We decided to try it again and it really didn't disappoint! Perfect food from start to finish ( our table got the delicious Basque calamari, a half serving of their famous mussels, steak frites---OMG these fries are sooo crisp and tasty and the gorgonzola butter melting on that tender meat? Divine!!-- and creme brulee). The service was impeccable and friendly; its impressive to see all the staff and cooks bustling like clock work in there! Atmosphere is great if a tad loud. I went twice this weekend. They have very good food perfectly mixed with a nice casual atmosphere but they have some trouble with the execution. On one night, I ordered the Cider Poke. It was great (and the sweet potato side was amazing) but arrived at the table cold. An attempt to fix it turned it well done. The response to be to recook or offer something else. When ordering I asked for a glass of wine with my meal. It arrived after I was done. I didn't really want it at that point but not even an offer to cancel the order nor was it removed from the bill. On the next night, one of my companions ordered a burger. She mistakenly requested it as medium rare when she wanted a true medium (Note: Red Stripe cooks like a fine steakhouse which is about one level more rare for the same request than a chain casual dining restaurant). She sent it back to be cooked some more. The restaurant was nice enough to fire a whole new burger, however, this time it arrived rare. They were nice enough to provide a free soup instead. We certainly can't be mad since we made the initial error, though again I am a bit concerned about the execution. I ordered my burger medium and got exactly what I was expecting the first time. It was very tasty. Also their muscles with chorizo and the ones with cream & bacon are both amazing. The fries are very good. Their french onion soup is amazing. read more

This is my first visit since they remodeled and expanded. Place really looks great...but it is still as loud as ever. If you want a quiet meal...this is not the place. I stick with my usual burger and fries. Was as good as ever. I have also had the steak sandwich, which I like. My girlfriend had Bolognese and said it was pretty good. The last three times I've been the experience has not been good--the servers are nice, but the food and the timing of service is sub-par. I don't make this choice to abandon Red Stripe (aka my neighborhood go-to spot) lightly. Four visits over an 8 month period of time have sealed the deal for me. The Lavendar Chicken (no longer on the menu) was, at one time, the best dish on the menu--perfectly cooked with a delecate flavor. Last time I ordered it, it was served smothered by a overpowering brown-oniony sauce and rock hard blocks of polenta. The prior version of the dish was delicately flavored and well balanced. This dish was essentially drowning the diner in the sauce. to replace the lavender chicken, there is now a Moroccan chicken. It was ok. The seasoning is very light--almost too light--and doesn't really shine until the second day. The jus that is served with it is flavorless and is served in a crockery bowl--just what I want, to have a cheap cafeteria bowl as the holder of the ocean of jus holder. This is an issue of amount over flavor as though the kitchen things that the diner will be so overwhelmed with the crockery dish they won't notice the jus ads nothing. That evening all of our food arrived barely warm with the burgers cold. Finally, my last visit, I opted to enjoy the Moules & Frites. Barring the fact that they got my order wrong, the muscles were enormous and chewy. Essentially, I was served the muscles version of mutton. While the broth they gave me was wrong--it also suffered under the same issue as the jus, little flavor and an ocean of it to make up for the lack--it had the bones to be delicious. But the overall dish was a bit of a turnoff. The wine continues to be superb, but there are far too many food misses than hits. read more

I must say the staff here is awesome. It is hard to pick a favorite but The Bartender David at the back bar is totally awesome. Great service and professional. The food is amazing and always consistent. My favorite is the beef stroganoff and the Cobb salad. There is one thing stopping me from giving them five stars. They always seem to run out of certain liquor or wine. Come on who does the ordering here and let's them run out of Jack Daniels twice in the past two months. We love this place! We've been a few times and have had generally good service and have always had great food. I love that they're on Open Table, too. In general it's loud in there, but it's not horrible. The back room is definitely better if you want great dinner conversation. Today, service was a little bit rocky. However, they really did save themselves with good acknowledgment of the issue and definitely made it right. Today (labor day), we went with my family and had a reservation for a party of 8. We ordered two appetizers -- the calamari and the buffalo cauliflower, and both were fantastic. Those came together and with good timing. We then ordered our entrees -- two burgers, one cobb salad, two omelets, two classic grilled cheeses with tomato bisque, and one Red Stripe grilled cheese with tomato bisque. The burgers and the salad came first, and then we sat for about 10 minutes waiting for the word on our other meals. The server came over and apologized and said the other meals would be out soon. He was extremely apologetic. He went back over to the kitchen window and he seemed clearly irritated and advocating for us, though he wasn't doing anything inappropriate. Another 10 to 15 minutes passed, and we asked if he would put the burgers back under the heat lamp. Unfortunately, they were already too cold to really salvage, but when my cousin and husband ultimately ate them they said they were still good even chilly. Another 5 minutes passed, and finally, two more plates. Then another 5 minutes and two more plates. So now we had 7 of the 8 plates, and were missing one grilled cheese and soup. Lagging around 5 minutes behind even that was the final plate. The kitchen was clearly the issue. All of the servers were standing at the window looking frustrated, and our server was very apologetic. Half of the food was on the cold side, though honestly, it was still pretty good. The server really did make all of this good though. After the final plate came, he said I'm terribly sorry about this and I'm going to talk to the manager to see what I can do for you. When we were all set, he brought over two checks. One was the original, and the other one was the one we needed to pay that was almost 50% off our full bill. We knew it wasn't our servers fault and still tipped him on the full amount. We were very glad that he was so proactive and advocated for us, and we didn't have to make a huge deal out of the whole thing. At the end of the day we would definitely go back. Me and my family were at red stripes for Father's Day dinner. We had tomato soup, paella , red stripe burger, mussels and of course sangria. Tomato soup was great!!! I love the way make it.
