I had a really disappointing experience here. I ordered a calzone and garlic knots, and almost immediately after eating them I started feeling sick to my stomach. Within a short time I had to rush to the bathroom and ended up throwing up. It was honestly a terrible experience. Beyond that, the food itself was not good at all. The calzone and garlic knots tasted very bland and seemed very unfresh. There was almost no flavor, and the texture made it seem like the ingredients had been sitting around for a while rather than being freshly prepared. When you're paying for restaurant food, you expect it to at least taste fresh and be made with quality ingredients. Unfortunately this was the complete opposite of that. The whole experience left me feeling sick and extremely disappointed. I rarely write negative reviews, but people should know what they might be getting. The food is three stars right down the middle. The actual location? Hm. Inside, it feels like so many pizza parlors straight out of the 1980s. I'm a captive to my nostalgia obsession at times, so normally, an old-fashioned or just plain decaying old place adds at least a star. But not at Red Tomato Pizza House. Nope. For some reason, this place depresses me. It depresses me like all the other restaurants on the north side of University Avenue that have gone into long slow death spirals that seemed like they might actually survive but did eventually succumb to changing tastes and/or a bad location and/or the relentless pursuit of building ugly apartment buildings in Downtown Berkeley. Red Tomato Pizza House has survived, but not through sheer will or grit or fortitude or even luck. It looks and feels much worse for the wear, and I think it is. I don't know how it survives, and when my office was nearby, I gave it plenty of tries. It was fine. Three stars straight down the middle. Yet even I couldn't persuade myself to eat here (rather than taking it to go), because it's just so depressing. Great pizza, which says a lot with all the good options in Berkeley, but I want to call out the staff and manager for handling a problem delivery exceptionally well. I placed a late order, manager asked a server to drop it off on way home. However, my phone provider dropped service and I didn't notice, leaving the not-really-a,-delivery-driver unable to deliver, as I had said to call and I'd come out - our place is completely hidden and we.yave dogs so it's typically the best way for driver - just not now. They tried for 45 MINUTES. I later heard the increasingly stressed but never rude and always professional messagea they left. It was way too late to knock on neighbors'doors. Further, when I called the next.day to apologize the manager was much kinder than I deserved. With restaurants the staff plays a significant role in how I feel about my experience. First off, the food was great. I got a large calzone, and it was a TON of food for what is not much money in Berkeley. Second of all, the people were so nice! I felt very welcomed and comfortable there. They definitely care. The food was quick and they checked in on us semi-regularly. Also, the vibes were great. It's a nice classic place and feels very homey. Also, they played cat videos instead of sports in one of the TVs (only for a few minutes, though) which is a massive plus. I placed my order and my sister and I waited for a little while but we ordered a lot lol I ordered a meat lovers personal pizza, garlic twists, medium farmers medley, and a medium build your own. The ingredients on the pizzas were amazing! I'm sad I don't live closer. The garlic twists were delicious and I wish I ordered more. That's what you get for being nice and sharing. When we received our order we were told we got a little extra something which were the brussel sprouts. I love brussel sprouts so that was a great surprise for me. They were perfectly seasoned. A sweet, little mom and pop shop. Their vegan selection of pizzas are (surprisingly) delicious! The cheese has a nice pull and isn't creamy like cream cheese. The crust was right kind of thin but not too thin, and unlike many thin crusts, did not smell burnt. They also put attention to detail. For ex. the spinach was placed under the cheese so it does not burn and the toppings were all the way to the edge of the crust. They do some magic seasoning on top of the pizza that makes the flavors pop. The place is clean inside, convenient location, and you can watch a game on any of the different 3 TVs. read more

Got four items on 8/25/20: California Chicken and Garlic, a large combo, mac n cheese, and pesto garlic bread twists. Service was attentive and super thorough. I received a phone call when my order was ready, even though I was already picking it up. They were still chopping tomatoes and slicing up pizzas when I arrived right after opening at 3pm. Mac n cheese was almost ready, they told another customer, as they make each mac n cheese to order, and with quality cheese and crispy toasted breadcrumbs. Not your average instant Kraft slapped together as a side. This homemade goodness tastes like it could've come from Homeroom with its rich and powerful, cheesy and garlicky ooey-gooeyness. So rich that I had to eat it over several sittings. Although this is a pizza place, the mac n cheese can stand on its own. The pizzas had just come out of the oven when I showed up and were made with fresh ingredients. I could taste a hint of wine in the pizza sauce as well. Crust is thin and crispy, as it should be, not overpowering the pizza (got the regular crust, not skinny). Pesto garlic twists were delicious as well. It doesn't feel heavy, fattening, or greasy like cheap pizzas make you feel. Sure, it's not the cheapest pizza that you'll find, especially if you're a student on a budget, but you get premium ingredients and awesome service here. read more

People we know in the area said this place was amazing and when we finally got the chance to try, we'd agree. How have I not done a review for this place? I love Red Tomato Pizza House! The service here is extraordinary, the food is good, the prices are reasonable, and you really can't beat it for the pizza. Plus, they make one of the best calzones in the area. We go virtually every Monday to take advantage of their one topping pizza special - large for only $9.99! FOOD: We've gone here SEVERAL times and each time it is consistently good. They use a very classic dough and cook it thoroughly enough so that it isn't goopy or weak like some places. Generous with the cheese and pepperoni, we usually get the large one topping, but lately I've been ordering the calzone and LOVE it. More like a folded pizza than a traditional calzone, but so much better than most calzones which end up doughy and undercooked in the middle. Not this one. Just really tasty. SERVICE: You can't go wrong here. Everyone is super nice and they always get our order out on time. They are friendly, remember who we are (which is such a nice touch), and really appreciate their customers. And generous with the toppings! COST: Again can't beat it. The $9.99 special is terrific, but the calzone I order is only $12.50 for the large and it easily is two meals for this big guy. So worth it. I need to remember to take pics!!! read more

I wish their crust was thinner, but alas, we are not in NYC. I had the spicy Vegan pizza. The tofu could be crumbled up and mixed with nutritional yeast, but the protein is nice to have. The sauce was exceptional. I did add some additional veggies, lemon zest, garlic powder, and goat cheese (yes, I know the pizza is no longer vegan at that point, but I'm more plant-based in my diet and sometimes splurge if I have something around; the goat cheese, garlic, and lemon zest combined made the pizza very tasty. read more

It's hard to find Vegan good food in SF so when we can here and I switched from eating meat to go vegan, this was a wonderful spot that definitely hit the spot. I love the vegan pizzas here , they have more than just a veggie pizza.
