Recently visited Red Tower ll while visiting New Jersey after many years. Unwelcoming atmosphere! Very disappointed! The hamburgers had a "warmed-over flavor " leaving a weird aftertaste, perhaps from reheating. The onion rings were overcooked and greasy. It serves it's purpose. It's a true greasy spoon that's likely not been deep cleaned or updated since the 80's. I had Texas weiners which is mustard, onions and chili. The dog is likely a thumans hotdog which is the best NJ based manufacturer. The mustard was decent but they globbed it on to hold the insane amount of onions they then added. As in, over the top. Killed the dog. The chili was Greek style and lacked any spice or flavor. It reminded me of a boiled chop with light seasoning. Again, not even a glimmer or red sauce in the chili, just a meat concoction. Not my spot but I had to try it. They could really dominate the area if the chili was good. read more

I'm surprised the overall rating is so low. I love these dogs. Kind of a depressing room and melancholy mood in the place ... the people behind the counter go about their business silently and sort of sadly, it seems. I usually find myself here in the late afternoon and there are usually only one or two other customers in there, eating solemnly by themselves. And there's always a TV on playing CNN or something. But the hot dogs are excellent and expertly prepared and all of the accoutrements (chili, sauerkraut, buns) are all perfect also. Also, on a brighter note regarding the atmosphere and mood, my favorite nephew Conor told me once that he was there at 3:00 a.m. on a Saturday night once and the place was packed with a huge extended family group who seemed to be there as an after-party to a Quinceañera, and everyone was wearing tuxes and gowns and half of them were under ten years old and it was a very happy and festive mood. First time visitor. Did not know what to expect nor read any reviews before going in to the place. Walking in I realize it was nothing that was high tech or classy. Or ordered a western omelet which came with home fries and toast. I understand at 6am you can run a business with the cook accepting the money. But when I see the cook not wearing gloves when handling food. And you touching my toast with your bare hands that you just cooked over the grill and rung up my total on the register. I couldn't begin to eat the food. I am not about the rest. But I am one that thinks there is steps of decency establishment's can impose on staffs who your appointing to serve your customers. I've always been curious about this place on my drive back home so I finally decided to stop by and take a look. Like other reviews said the interior looked depressing and the cashier didn't show an ounce of emotion but he wasn't rude, simply just took my order and got right to work. With all that said it sort of has a bit of charm. I got the hot dog with mustard and sauerkraut. The dog had a great snap to it, perfectly coated in mustard, and the sauerkraut was great. The bun could have been better, but the hotdog was exactly what I was craving. I can understand why some people may be negative about this place, sure it could be more hygienic and the cook/cashier a bit more friendly but at the of the day it's a hotdog joint and it delivers on that! read more

The good: EXTREMELY fast service (dogs were ready, literally, in the blink of an eye), and its one of the only fast food places on this 6 mile stretch of Rt. 22 eastbound, between Plainfield and Union. Open 24 hrs on the weekends. The bad: the hot dogs weren't too great... not sure if they were boiled or grilled, but they kinda made a "pop" with each bite, which made it a little less appetizing. I dropped into red tower but left unsatisfied and smelling like a deep frier. I ordered a chili cheese dog, fries, and a drink. Fries were okay. Didn't like the hot dog and honestly should have ordered it plain. Oh well, it wasn't good enough for me to go back and get a plain dog. Menu includes "Fatboy" 1/3 lb. hamburgers, Texas wieners, sandwiches, and daily specials, like homemade soups, meatloaf, etc. One Greek-looking guy was in the back banging out all the food, and another guy handled the counter. The "Texas wiener" is indigenous to New Jersey, invented in Paterson, NJ, and has spread as far west as eastern Pennsylvania. It is a grilled hot dog topped with chili, chopped raw onions, and yellow mustard. According to Wikipedia, the "Texas" reference is to the chili sauce, which actually has a stronger Greek cuisine influence due to the ethnicity of the cooks who invented it. I grew up in New Jersey around the Plainfield area, and I can vouch for this fact, as the multitude of Texas wiener stands in the vicinity all seemed to be run by Greeks. The Texas wiener at Red Tower II was very good ($2.95). It's a Schickhaus foot-long, topped with homemade beef chili. I forewent the mustard in order to better taste the dog and the chili. The casing had a nice snap to it, and was juicy, with lots of garlic flavor. The chili was mild, but satisfying. It complimented the hot dog without overpowering it. This place is about as no-frills as you can get, but I will be back to try the burgers, soups, and some of the other homecooked items. It is a good alternative to the ubiquitous fast-food chains that line the highway. read more

I asked a worker how long this establishment been opened for and he said his grandfather started in 1983. Food was okay. Onion was cunch and chili looked ground beef and grayish color. To criticize Red Tower is to not understand fine dining. It is the very definition of perfection, from the retro style 60's sign to the best tuna on rye in all of New Jersey. My boys rave about the burgers, Philly cheese steak, eggs and home fries. What I love about Red Tower is it can maintain a nostalgic atmosphere while offering a clean and healthy environment. Breakfast is better than the lunch menu. Eggs and hash brown are standard fare but consistent in flavor. Drink sizes are a bit skewed in my opinion. The medium is more like a small. The Orange Juice is always good to go. Prices could be cheaper. It's quiet, so that's a plus. However it is a bit disheartening to eat there when there are no other customers or only 1 or 2. So , I've been here a couple times with my parents. Today , 05/26/19 The old guy doing the orders BLAMED ME for being in my phone and told me I "confuse him" with the orders , when I was in my phone he was taking my dad's order , later he started to take my order and started to be rude because I asked him what comes with the hot dogs , later he took my mom's order . And my phone was away by the time he was doing my order, after that I payed for me and my parents , and he didn't put the order of fries that my dad asked for in the bill .
