Based on reviews almost didn't go, but since my daughter wanted chicken strips and fries we decided to take a chance. It was very crowded and waitresses were very busy trying to take care of everyone. Staff was very friendly. I ordered lemon herb chicken and the hubby ordered lamb shank. Our dinners came with soup or salad, and I ordered salad and hubby soup that never came. Our waitress brought our dinners and we let her know we didn't receive our soup or salad. She apologized and said she would bring them, at that point I didn't want my salad. My husband did get his soup which he liked. Overall food was good but service was average. We stopped at the Red Viking Restaurant for breakfast on one of our mornings in Solvang. We wanted to get some aebleskivers and they had a wooden viking out front so it seemed like a good choice. The service was a bit slow even though the place was mostly empty. We each got the aebleskivers with danish sausage. The aebleskivers were nicely cooked, but not super crispy on the outside, which is ideally what you want. The danish sausage was really delicious - nice spice and great flavor. We visited another restaurant down the street the next morning and the aebleskivers there were not nearly as good. read more

We came here the day after thanksgiving. Naturally there were a lot of people so we waited for 45 minutes to be seated. This part is absolutely understandable. After we ordered, we wait at least for 30 minutes for the food to come out. We ordered the standard lunch combo so there's really no reason for the food to come out so late. When we tasted the food, it was luke warm and gross. We asked the waitress to bring it back in to warm it up for us which she did. The food was tasteless to our disappointment. My husband and I were on vacation. Stopped here especially because of the buffet, we wanted to try different foods. There wasn't much to offer. 2 kinds of cheese, sliced turkey and ham. a couple of salads with the flavors of Denmark? Good breakfast, fresh made consistent good food. Good soups, good salads, a good burger, an all veggie option, fresh fish...of course abelskivers with raspberry jam. The Red Viking had the largest most appetizing ad in the menu guide book. The employees were friendly, the atmosphere was rustic, with a theme that continues on from the entire neighborhood. But the food was not at all impressive. We chose the smorgasbord highly recommended by the waiter . Sampled all the main dishes available. Found everything on the menu to be awful. Food was so so. I decided I'm not a big Danish food fan, so not really writing about the food. The wait staff were all really nice...however the hostess (middle aged woman) was extremely rude to pretty much every customer that came thru the door. Couldn't believe her openly hostile tone to this poor family that made the mistake of asking her how long the wait would be. They ended up leaving. The Red Viking is a quaint little cafe type place to eat in Solvang. Who wouldn't love to eat a VIKING dinner, I mean c-mon! The atmosphere felt very homey, and had cute decorations set out for Easter. It was very quiet and was a nice place to relax after a day of shopping. My husband and I were searching for quite awhile to find a place that served wienerschnitzel. He was so pleased when they offered this on the menu. I must say, it was better than some of the places we looked at, The Green House Cafe did not even know what a wienerschnitzel was! I was in awe. I ended up trying one of their open faced sandwiches. I was a bit nervous about trying something different, but it was a smart choice. Just the right amount of food, plus the food seemed very authentic. My husband has visited Germany many times, and stated he thought this place was quite good for being in America. The vast amount of interesting types of bread they served was fun to try as well. We enjoyed this place on the recomendation of the owner of the company where I work. It was our anniversay so we went and enjoyed the Smorgasbord. The breads were good, I enjoyed an open faced Liverwurst sandwich and some sausage. The meatballs (Which were recommended along with the restaraunt) were very good on top of mashed potatos. A good mix of food some Danish some American. I finished off the meal with a couple Butter cookies and some chocolate pudding. After seeing that the Solvang Resturant was closed, my husband and I stopped here to for some aebleskivers and the combination plate since they were still open. I didn't much like the combination plate--the sausage, meatball and mashed potatoes were so salty--it might have been the gravy. The red cabbage was not to my liking. My husband who is a lot less picky enjoyed the food but even he said the gravy was much too much. Portion was huge, we shared one plate and it was almost too much food. I don't like giving bad reviews, but I have to be honest. Maybe it just that I not a fan of Scandinavian food, but I really thought that the food was lacking in flavor. The potatoes and gravy were good, but the main part of the meal, which was the Wienerschinitzel, was pretty uneventful. The setting was different: it had a diner feel to it which is always a bit too familiar. The service was not bad, but not amazing. Good food... I personally loved the Danish sausage... Great serving size too... Also, if you are lucky they will bake Danish biscuits and bring them around... For $16.95 you get wilted lettuce, pre-packaged meatballs, chicken wings, mashed potatoes, lunch meat and jello. The Danish element is curry mayonnaise over cauliflower, pickles, sausage and red cabbage. Cold, tasteless, possibly day old. The main menu items are just as plain and tasteless. My bf and I went there for dinner. It was really, really delicious. He had a steak/sausage combo plate that included red cabbage (sweet) and mashed potatoes and gravy. I had a large chef salad. The staff were very very nice. They did have an all-you-can eat buffet which we considered getting, but the selection wasn't great and it was quite overpriced. Some interesting items in it though - cauliflower with mustard sauce, liver pate, chicken drumettes, a very nice looking salad bar. Had the price been lower or the selection a bit bigger, we would have gotten that instead. I'd definitely go back there again sometime. Oh yeah, the bread they serve on the table was very tasty too, especially the thin-sliced nut bread. I think it was like 25 bucks for the two of us, very reasonable. read more

FOOD: We did the Smorgasbord because hey, why not? It was really just a buffet with a few Scandanavian dishes. The food was just o.k. Not too many veggies to speak of and the meat dishes were very heavy, which is probably very useful in colder countries, but not so much California. Strangely, there were also taco fixings. AMBIENCE: The ambience is what you would expect from a touristy restaurant, but fascinating nonetheless. The staff is very cool and super nice. I went to this cute looking restaurant with my husband, and we had a great time there! The service was very good, and the servers were very attentive. The menu has two sides, which is the American side, and the Danish side. The American side includes sandwiches and burgers, while the Danish side include their more traditional food. I ordered Danish sausages and my husband Danish meatballs. The portion is very generous, and the food is delicious. I absolutely recommend their dessert. They are three balls covered with powdered sugar and they come with raspberry sauce. At first, I thought they would taste like donuts, but I was so wrong! They are very light, and delicious. Went here during the Danish days, so I imagine the place is more packed than usual. We waited roughly 15 minutes, which was about how long they estimated our wait would be. Had the open face Danish meatball sandwich. The meatball has a good flavor and texture (not American meatball, mind you). The pickled veggies were a good choice, as they cut the heavyness of the meatball and pumpernickel bread. It's definitely not something I can easily find elsewhere, and while it's not something I will crave for, it's a pretty good sandwich. Service decent.
