One of the worst barbershops I've ever been to. Do not have Esteban cut your hair if you want a military style cut, he has absolutely no idea what he is doing and he will destroy it. He destroyed my flat top so bad that i had to go another barber to get it fixed. The upsetting thing is that they said they could do super short flat tops and this is not the case. Probably the most ghetto barbershop in the El Cajon area! If you are used to receiving professional service, then this establishment is not for you! My first experience was horrible. Estaban was my barber and he screwed up my beard- the left and right sides were way uneven. Stupid me, I went back again hoping to get a different barber and hoping that experience would be different, but when I showed up for my scheduled appointment the barber had already left for the day- guess who it was? Estaban was supposed to have been my barber. Message to owner- you lost a potential life customer. read more

Since my last review, things have turned around in this relationship. Rich, the owner, reached out to me and offered me a free redo. Ever in a mood to reconcile, I took him up on his offer. When I shared my concerns and preferences with him, he recommended a certain barber--Rey Cunanan. Rey is a great listener and is eager to cut my hair as I want it to be cut. I need only communicate clearly how that is...not easy! Some people know exactly what style they want. I'm not some people. I only know how I want my hair to feel and behave. Looks are external; others can appreciate them or not. As long as I don't look ridiculous, I'm okay with it. My wife has specific preferences with regard to my appearance. If my hair isn't cut to her liking, she'll definitely let everyone know--especially me! Rey's first effort drew derisive remarks from My Critic, so I mentioned that this time around. Okay, she didn't actually praise his work but she didn't deride it either. Progress! Meanwhile, it feels right to me. Rey has responded to my concerns creatively and with an attitude of eager cooperation. If you're at all like me, not knowing how you want your hair cut--just how you want it, and other people, to respond--I recommend Rey Cunanan at Refined Barbershop. Last time I was here, only cash was accepted. Oops! I forgot! I rarely carry cash. However, I almost always carry my phone. Rey told me that he accepts Apple Pay. So I paid him using the app. Now, that's convenience! Two other notes: I have specific preferences with regard to the personal-care products that I use. First, they must be free of perfumes. Also, I like to have firm hold of my style while retaining the ability to run my fingers through my hair. This is only possible with water-based gel--which Refined doesn't typically use. I specified the products that I prefer and Rey (or maybe Rich) bought them! My preferred shaving cream and hair gel along with great listening. You can't get much better than that. read more

After not getting my hair cut for about a year, i decided it wss time. When i found this place the price was more than what i was expecting, but decided to give it a shot. I got a hot towel shave and a cut. I'm not dissapointed!! Alex did an amazing job and "rolled back the milage" that i had accumulated over the year. It was well worth the money paid. This place is legit and definitely my new go to barbershop. I made an appointment with Stephanie and was seen at exactly the time promised. The cut was professional and to my liking without having to do much explaining beforehand, you can tell she has been doing this for a while. The cut took about 25-30 minutes and you could tell she took her time to get all the details right. They also offer beer and other drinks while you wait if you come in without an appointment which you can but I recommend making an appointment, plus lots of TVs to keep you entertained. Parking is a little tight but haven't had a hard time finding a spot within a few feet from the entrance. Overall this is a solid gem hidden inside this strip mall that I would recommend to anyone looking to try a new barbershop. This barbershop is great! I take my son here to see Stephanie and she is AMAZING! She has been cutting my boy's hair since he was 3 and he is now 7 years old. She cleans him up real nice and people always love how fresh he looks after. Definitely check for Steph! :) Another amazing barber is Anne! She recently braided my daughter's hair (her hair is suuuper thick and long) for her volleyball game and tournament. Her braids came out so bomb! Anne made them tight, but didn't hurt her head. My daughter slept in the braids and woke up with the braids still looking good. She got so many compliments at school. She loves the braids! I will definitely be bringing her back to Anne. read more

A true artisan barbershop. I have been looking for one in San Diego for the longest time. These guys really take their time with you to make sure you are looking good. First time today with Esteban and dude cleaned me up with a fresh fade and comb over. Lined me up right and styled it to perfection. $19 for a haircut plus a tip, totally worth it from these guys. I do recommend not holding the free drink they give you while getting your haircut. Just ask them to leave it on their table and drink it before or after. read more

Recently got my haircut by Rey, the man took a screwed up haircut (cut it myself) and saved it! He's very easy to talk to so it's not dry while you get your haircut like other places that are very "Down to Business". I loved the fact that they play Rock music in the store compared to many other haircut locations that play usual top 40 hits. One of the awesome things about this barbershop is that they offer you a free beer with service, and if you're non-alcoholic, Canada Dry Ginger-Ale. I used to go see Anne at another barber shop. I get a haircut and hot towel shave every three weeks or so. I send her a text requesting a specific time and day and she always responds within a few minutes to confirm or suggest another time if she is not working or has an appointment at that time. Suddenly, when I requested an appointment a couple of weeks ago, Anne responded that she had moved to a new place and would be available Friday afternoon and we set the appointment. It turns out that the new place is right next door to my dentist and they advertise a free beer with each service! I arrived a few minutes late due to traffic and there was Anne, waiting there for me with a big smile. I immediately noticed that the chair was much more comfortable than at the last place. It was a hot day Friday and when Anne asked if I'd like a beer, I said YES! It was very cold and refreshing, just what I needed. There were about 5 or 6 other barbers there and they were all chatting among themselves and with clients, the atmosphere was fun, but professional. Anne knows I'm not much of a talker, so after pleasantries, she got right down to business. The entire experience was fantastic. I got my usual haircut and hot towel straight razor shave and a beer to boot! I'm really glad that Anne has joined this new place. I think we will be happy there for years to come. Needed to make a flight so I used another barber who messed my fade up and couldn't even do a line up on a beard made me shave my beard since he messed it up so bad then charged me for a beard trim wtf. Came in from the Bay Area and had heard about this shop from up there [used to live in SD], none the less - had to try it out. Thoroughly impressed with the shops operation, cleanliness, and ability to take me on late notice. Environment is a nice place for a man to step out for a moment and have a minute to himself. I am a stickler when it comes to customer service as i sadly believe its a gift that is slowly dying in businesses nowadays. Owner: I have worked with business owners from all levels for the past 10 years and this barber shop owner has what some of my top franchisee owners lack.... Humble, Connected to his people, and passion. You could see it, the way he greeted his customers, the way he thanked everyone for stopping by, and his genuine interest for what his employees needed. Heard them talk about ordering product and his response was "of course, anything you need and you want to sell let me know". On his way out he acknowledged every barber working with a good bye/ thanks. THIS IS HOW YOU DO BUSINESS. You treat your people well and they will treat your customers even better. Major kudos to this young entrepreneur. Barber: My husband has followed Paul for quite some time. Paul has started cutting my sons hair as well and i can't say enough good things about him. Paul is patient, detailed and talented. HE GAVE MY FOUR YEAR OLD A 30 MIN HAIRCUT. I can't even get him to stay still with the best Paw Patrol episodes, so i have no clue how he managed to do that. I went because my regular barber is further away, Dinks on Adams. I'll have to try Rey again because he did just as well as the great barbers at Dinks do but he's much closer. I paid w cash and didn't check if they can take a credit card; I hope that option is available in the near future if it's not already.
