I have been a member for 7 years. I have visited and purchased many REI items and I keep going back year after year due to high quality shoes, clothing and recreational equipment. Their team is always knowledgeable and pleasant to talk with. Today I returned a camping chair which was the first return I ever had to make. The chair had torn along a seam the first time I used it. I have purchased many of these in the past and never had a problem. The staff interaction was fast and professional and I walked out with a new chair in about 10 minutes. This is not a place that I frequent but I was on the search for something for a coworker and I was pleasantly surprised by just how much merchandise is in this store! I imagine if you are looking for anything needed to enjoy your time outdoors you'll find it here! My gracious! We perused the store and ended up getting a gift card for her (which she loved). The cashier told me after the fact that if I'd had their rewards account, they could track the gift card if lost. Would have been nice to know BEFORE I purchased it, but okay. I like the new location! The Grand Opening was fun and everyone was nice and upbeat. The store looked great. I like that they brought the earth into the store, with succulents in jars and rocks and wood on platters haha. Nice touch. The little book section is cool, gives it a very chill homey feel. I was in need of dry wick pants rain jacket and other items for my trip to Alaska. I arrived at store about an hour before closing and was greeting by friendly workers. Hannah helped me find every item I needed. Words cannot express how grateful I am for Hannah's ability to pick out my rain pants, rain coat, dry pants, under base layers hat - everything I needed in my size! She was dedicated to helping me solve each of the issues I gave her. Hannah is amazing! Then when I checked out which was just about closing, the cashier was super helpful in explaining my membership benefits. Apparently we live in Nazi America! I've never had such a negative experience in a retail store in my life. The manager asked me VERY rudely to wear a mask. I resistantly complied and walked away only to be confronted less the 60 seconds later by another store employee who told us that my seven-year-old must wear a mask. Every interaction was completely rude and we left immediately and put down all the purchases we had planned to buy. Unbelievable the way people treat other people theses days. A bit of an improvement over the Tempe location. A little bigger, nicer looking inside, less homeless people peeping in your car windows. Easiest way to get here is on I-10. Exit on Ray Road heading east. Turn right at the first light immediately after the I-10 overpass, in fact the intersection is still tilted from coming downhill from the overpass. As you exit I-10 and turn left onto Ray Rd, stay in the right most lane and hit your turn signal, it's really close. If you miss the turn, go to the next light (56th St) and turn right, then go down to the first right past the mall buildings which takes you back to 54th St. REI is near the middle of the mall on the west side of the street. The sign overhead now says REI Co-op, not sure why the name changed. I just hope they keep the rude pushy sales people out of this store, it pretty much ruined the Tempe store. read more

Traveling through Phoenix and we needed a couple gear items. One big one was a new sleeping bag, and luckily one of the employees was extremely knowledgeable and very nice. I love this place. In fact I love any type of outdoor related store or section. If it involves hunting, fishing, hiking or camping I'm engaged. I used to frequent the Tempe location as it was close to me. This new store is bigger but still caters to the outdoor enthusiast. If hiking, climbing, camping is your gig, this is your store. There are some awesome local places that specialize in more specific interests, but REI covers most of my needs for hiking and camping. Most of the products you find in REI are suited for the hardcore types. The prices will be equivalent to the quality of merchandise you are buying. I would recommend to anyone just wanting something like hiking boots, tents, camp chairs, hydrations packs, etc for a one or two time excursion or use to go to Wal-Mart, Target or Big 5. But if you are really into something specific and do frequently then this is where you want to shop. Anyone spending lots of time in the wilderness will want dependable gear for the constant wear and tear. REI carries most of the high quality brands and you will have price options as well. For $20 you can buy a membership that has some pretty sweet offers. 10% member refunds or annual dividends, reduced rates on classes, rentals, rates and adventures. You get information and access to semi-annual events with huge savings and member only offers on savings. The return policy is pretty awesome as well. I do like the clothes they have, but again they are very pricey. Like all hobby purchases I like to research, read reviews and I'll come here to try on or check out. Then I'll G.T.S (google that shit) and price shop. If it's something I need ASAP I'll buy in store. If I can save on-line I'll wait for my arrival. Taking advantage of membership, waiting for sales or member events can be very lucrative and not as painful to your wallet. If you've never checked this place out, stop in at least once. read more

Two weeks ago, I ordered a backpack. It came two days before I came to Arizona. Interestingly it was shipped FROM Arizona. The salesman in the South Lake, Texas store helped me decide which one to buy and fitted me. When I started out last Monday, I loaded my new backpack with lots of stuff an old man might need if I fell and broke a hip. I'd hate to be waiting for hours or days to be found and carried out of the wilderness. I think the lady's name that helped me was named Teresa. She was fantastic. I am always made to feel right at home in ANY REI store that I go in to. Love how the backpack felt so much better after her adjustments. I've now hiked hours and have been very comfortable. read more

I need some Key bike shoe cleats. I drive all the way there . . . and they are out. The salespeople say they have no control over stocking - corporate office sends stuff and they ran out. I've seen this before - not much local store control. Also, bought my daughter's bike there took it in for a free tune-up. I get phone call saying the chain is worn needs to be replaced. At the time I was riding a bike with 6000 miles on its chain - and you tell me a bike with less than 100 miles needs new chain is normal wear? read more

Save your time.. and your money and shop somewhere else, the employees here are a joke. My husband and I came into REI to purchase a bike, we were in the store for a good 10-15 minutes with multiple workers near us (who were not doing anything) & they NEVER said a word to us. No greetings, and no assistance was offered. I refuse to spend my money at a store where employees ignore their paying customers. Luckily, not everyone is pathetic at customer service and another bike store got our business. Never going there again and I will discourage anyone I know from going there as well. read more

After getting some of the worst customer service last week in the REI store in Paradise Valley, we drove down here today. This is a relatively new location having moved from Tempe. Very nice store and lots more room than Tempe. I went into the Shoe Dept and was greeted by Caleb who remembered me even though it has been over a year since I was last in at the Tempe store. Caleb took the time to find out what my needs were, checked my size and made recommendations. Long story short, I walked out with a great fitting pair of hiking boots and a smile on my face. read more

I came into REI today to look for a bag for backpacking this summer and a gentleman named Jeff helped me out and I don't think I could've found my perfect bag without him! He made sure that I tried on several different options and was more than happy to keep switching around the bags and the weight in them for me. Even after I made my decision and was walking around the store he came and checked on my friend and I again to make sure we were doing good. Received a dry-bag sleeping bag stuff sack as a gift just over a year ago (year and a month) but it was a little too small to easily use with my sleeping bag. Forgot to return this for exchange for a medium after using this once and realizing it was too small. Even though I've spent thousands of dollars and the person who gifted this to me has spent thousands of dollars over the years REI Chandler refused to exchange this for a medium since it was 1 month over their return policy period. I could understand if it was months past, or was more than very lightly used; but really, is this what customer service has come to? Rigidity? Didn't feel good at all about my experience. REI doesn't have enough competition in the market. Hopefully, a good option will come to market. I guess I'll see what Amazon has! read more

I love REI. The associates are knowledgeable, professional and personable. The prices are fair, especially with how helpful the staff is. This is all true, if you're referring to the Paradise Valley store. The Chandler store is definitely prettier, but run and managed poorly, by comparison. The attitude of the staff is less than friendly, and they're generally unhelpful when asking questions. They do not even turn the phones on immediately on opening. For the love of God, just shop at the Paradise Valley store. read more

This store has everything you need for your outside adventures! From clothes to tents to bikes and everything in between, you can pretty much find whatever you're looking for. Horrible experience! I asked an employee on the floor if an item I saw online can be shipped for free, she said yes and gave me a paper with the information for when I check out. The cashier than rang up the item and charged my card without me reviewing the transaction total. I pulled the receipt on my phone and was charged shipping! I then asked why I was charged shipping and she said shipping is only free if you spend $50. My total was $48 before tax and therefore was charged shipping!!! She never mentioned I was going to be charged. I could've ordered online on my own, added another item to avoid paying for shipping and also avoid the incompetence of the REI associates at this location. read more

My husband and I were in tonight looking to buy our first kayaks. We've been to both Dicks and Bass Pro and couldn't find anybody to answer our newbie questions (like we couldn't find a sales person - at all). When we entered REI, Tom was waiting to respectfully answer all of our questions. He was really informative and patient. He answered our questions from Hull shapes, to paddle weights, to car mounts for kayaks. We now feel like we have enough info to make a decision in making our first purchases. Bring your dogs! I was in the Chandler store today, 6/8/2019, and there was a man walking around in the store with a big dog. When I asked the clerk about it she said the dog people will just say that it's too hot to leave their dog in the car; I guess that's the latest dog scam. Area supermarkets have had to put up signs telling people what a service animal is and that their pet or emotional support animal is not a service animal. REI needs to get with the program. Every year in the US about 40 people are killed by dogs, about half of them are children under the age of 11. Millions of people are bitten every year, and millions of people are allergic, but that does't matter to those people who can't go anywhere without their dog. Fortunately you can buy the same stuff at Amazon for a lot less money. read more

The employees at this store are in serious need of customer service basics training. Especially the female "greeter" at the front of the store working on 12/28. As I was putting my face diaper on from the curb in front the store I walked by her and she said "You better make sure that mask stays on in the store!". Excuse me WTF? Here's some advice for you honey since this is probably your first job. You aren't going to get far in life and end up with a good job with that attitude. Save the tude until you get home. I am a paying customer who is buying frivolous items I don't need so you can have a job. If you happen to need something from me then you ASK politely, not bark orders like a drill sergeant. You are literally paid to sit on your butt and do absolutely nothing but virtue signal at the front door. You're a glorified Walmart greeter at best. Be grateful. Look at other recent reviews here and on Google and you'll see the rude behavior is a pattern at this store. Ironically the same people that are literally driving customers away are the same ones crying that they're going under because of reduced business. As an aside, this is the smallest REI I've ever been to and the selection is lacking. Order online from Backcountry instead. If you insist on shopping brick and mortar, stick to companies that appreciate your cash. read more

I went in twice to try on backpacking bags. Both times, the staff working were really helpful and patient. The second time I went in, I tried on bags for an hour, and asked tons of questions. I wish I remember the name of the employee who help me because he was so patient and knowledgeable. I bought a pack that day and just got home from my first backpacking trip. I was so pleased with the pack, it felt so light despite weighing 40 pounds. Thank you for your knowledgeable staff and helpfulness! I had a great experience in the store and on the trail. read more

If you are looking for brand name outdoor gear this place has things, that being said I had a horrible customer service experience at checkout. An elder man was my cashier and got mad at me canceled my transaction because I was paying with samsung pay and said it wouldn't go thru. I explained samsung is different from apple pay. Still the man wouldn't let me pay, I finally gave up and went up the street to dicks sporting goods. Which I had a great experience at...then I had to call my bank to dispute the charge because it did go through as I told them it would. So now I have to wait a week for this ordeal to be done... it's sad when one person will ruin a place for you. read more
