I have been to this location countless times and enjoy seeing the merchandise and visiting the friendly staff. I especially enjoy the shoe department. However, I'm still mad that they don't put hoka shoes on sale. They have a great selection of name brand items here. I always wait for good sales because otherwise it's pretty expensive. You can also get a credit card where you get tons of money back. I think I have hundreds of dollars that i've stored up waiting to buy great merchandise Thanks for being such a good asset in our community. There are a few stores that's suck me into the aisles and REI is one of them! Have a ten day camping trip coming and I knew this was the spot to get reliable camping goods and supplies. The staff is always friendly and even if you get lost by accident or on purpose through the aisles the employees are always willing to help you! Shout out to Corinda for the help with backpacks and about REI membership! Now price points are from midrange to high, however all of the items are well built and are meant to last. Parking was quick and easy when I visited on a Friday afternoon to pick up an emergency whistle that I could clip onto my key ring. I was offered assistance almost instantly after stepping inside. The worker on the floor helped me find what I was looking for and even told me about the differences between two similar products. In fact, a couple different employees checked on me as I browsed the aisles of hiking-related items and camping gear in the store before making my purchase, which I appreciated. However, service at the front counter was a bit slow. I observed the sole employee at the register as she prompted excessive conversation with individuals without regard for other customers waiting in line. This included reciting words to convince customers to join the REI membership for rewards... nope, not when you just added extra unnecessary wait time to my visit while I stood in the purchase line. Besides, the staff on the floor already tried to promote this to me, and I wasn't interested. Eventually another register opened, but at that point I was already leaving. In the end I got what I needed without any complications, and that's what matters most. read more

Our goal was to get some dried food for an upcoming camping trip and all were priced decently. The store is clean and well-stocked. A lovely REI location! Although this REI is a tad smaller than some of the other Bay Area locations, it still has a bunch to offer. It features all the same sections that the other REIs have, just a little smaller. This location's bike section is also far more expansive though. I feel like the clothing, shoe, and camping sections are not as big as other stores, but there are plenty of great brands with lots of sizing available! The re/supply (the discount section selling previously used items) was comparatively small. There was not much clothing or shoes there but a ton of outdoor accessories and camping gear. The clearance racks were actually impressive! The staff members are great! After pressing the button to call someone over for the fitting room, a staff member arrived within seconds. She was incredibly friendly and offered to help me if needed. The store is very clean. There was no clothing from previous customers left behind in the fitting rooms and the re-rack area was orderly. Short Story: One of the closer REIs as the one in Fremont closed :(. Long Story: I've been coming here for several years now and it's been good. The parking lot is a bit small and tight spaces but it's not overflowing. The staff are nice (when you can get their attention). The store itself is smaller than Fremont but you are still able to find most of what you need. I've bought many items from this store including ski gear, camping, bicycles, jackets, etc. Verdict: I'll go back! read more

If you want someone to help you find something here, don't bother even visiting. If it's a half an hour before closing, they are far too interested in closing the store. It's very evident that not any of them have been trained in any sort of customer service skills whatsoever but then again that pretty much sums up any place these days. When you go to the counter to ask them a question and the little girl looks it up on her phone and says oh it's in the middle of the store on the shelves and then goes about her business, I probably could have looked it up myself and bought it online in the time I wasted driving here. read more

There are two front doors. The right-side door has signage that states that members can get 20% off of one regular price item. My wife bought a pair of shoes. She was happy to get her annual dividend subtracted from the amount she had to pay. I was not happy that they failed to give her the 20% discount. While having lunch, I used their online chat to make sure that the shoes were no excluded from the discount. I was assured that they were not but that I would have to return to the store to get the refund. We went back to the store and my wife got into line and got the transaction corrected by getting a refund on the original ticket and then re-ringing it with the correct discount and the dividend subtracted. The price of the shoes? $165, therefore the discount was $33 plus the value of the sales tax. Not a huge amount, but certainly not a drop in the bucket either. I am a forty-year member of REI. Anytime we need outdoor gear, REI is our first stop. I understand that they were busy because of the big sale. I downgraded my rating for this visit because there was no apology given for the error. Yes, we got the money part resolved but good customer service also means being aware that errors made also create wasted time and wasted gas. A sincere apology should be automatically offered. read more

I'm pretty sure this is the worst REI location in the Bay Area but it's the closest one to home so I keep giving it a try - and always regret it. Once again the checkout line backed up to the door until finally a second employee showed up to do her job at the register. I assume she was taking laps around the store and finally reached 10,000 steps? Anyway, the employees here seem to hide and they tend to be rude and act bothered if you interrupt their hiding and ask for help. You cannot find them at the register, on the floor, or in the dressing room. Very poorly managed store. Today's experience reminded me that I just have to deal with the drive to the Berkeley store or find another that is properly staffed with helpful employees. Two stars because it's a reasonably well-stocked store, I never have trouble parking, and the location is convenient even if the customer service is not. read more

Everything is way cheaper online . Service is always great but nothing they offer as a discount works from online to in person. Selection is never good it just always seems to be okay for anyone my size. Selection = Online. It's been that way forever. This round was hard finding anything for my toddler. I don't understand the positive feedback for Kathy in the shoe section at the Dublin REI, as my experience was very different. I visited this location today specifically to purchase a shoe that was only in stock here in the color I wanted. The display was a size 6, so I waited for assistance. When no one came, I approached an associate in the shoe section, later learning her name was Kathy. When I said "excuse me," she briefly acknowledged me, said she'd be with me, and eventually came over. That was fine, as I could see she was assisting other customers. When she did help, I asked for the shoe in a size 7.5. She immediately questioned me multiple times about whether I was "sure" of my size, giving me a dismissive look each time. While I understand many customers may not know what they want, I was confident in my request and found her tone unnecessary. She brought out a pair that was clearly worn from being tried on many times--dirty and slightly scuffed. I confirmed it was the right style but politely asked if a newer pair was available, even apologizing for the trouble. Instead of responding, she rolled her eyes, sighed, and walked away to help another customer. She then returns with a snarky remark that "many people tried on the shoes in the store ". That was precisely why I had asked for a fresh pair, since I was paying full price for a product that should be in new condition. If no new pair was available, that would have been fine, but her delivery was unnecessarily rude. She also claimed the only other option might be the display, even though the display was a size 6. Eventually, she did locate a new pair, handed it to me, and said "have a nice day." Throughout, I remained polite and respectful. I knew exactly what I wanted, did not waste time trying multiple sizes, and was in and out within the hour. Yet Kathy's attitude was consistently dismissive, unprofessional, and condescending. She seemed more attentive and patient with older customers, while treating me as though my request was an inconvenience. As a paying customer, I left the store feeling disrespected and frustrated, despite ultimately purchasing the shoes I came for. read more

I came in to return a pair of pants that I bought from another location. Waited for about 7 minutes. Not bad at all. I was in and out quickly. This is usually the store that I come. Concurring with others stating Customer Service sucks here. We had to repeatedly ask for help and were kept waiting and the associate decided to go with the customer who came in after us to help even though he was called in to help us. The audacity of the person is he tells us I'm attending to them first not you so we clarified that we were here first and waiting yet he chose not to get help or help us. We had to ask almost 5-6 times after which we went and stood in the checkout line and blocked the line till Andrew came to help us. If it were not for Andrew the customer service scores a -100 on a scale of 1-10. Maybe they need to put a disclaimer that you only serve people who don't purchase because the customer who was served out of line decided not to buy with you and walked out after a test ride. read more

Came in today, Feb 1 @ 12:50pm looking a backpack for my upcoming trip to Japan with my cousins. I ended up buying the women's REI Ruckpack 40L only after I received assistance from the kindest employee who helped me setup the straps correctly to my backpack and fill it with weights to make sure it would something I would be able to carry around comfortably during my trip. And also I ended up finding out one of the largest book fairs is in Mexico City! I wish I had gotten his name, older gentlemen working the backpack section, mentioned he had worked there since 2022, thank you for friendly conversation and assistance! Shoppers beware: the days of REI having good customer service is a thing of the distant past. It is dead and long gone. They refused to accept a jacket return citing a small smudge. This is a $250 jacket. The rep called a manager, waited 20 min for a manager for them, only to have this grumpy middle aged lady with the attitude of a DMV clerk come out and say the same thing. I've recently visited this location looking for a specific running shoe. Kathy who works in the shoe section is amazing. She was so helpful and made sure I got the right size and type of shoe for my foot and running needs. She took the time to listen to me and make suggestions to help. I also purchased the $30 membership (although it's not required) so I get credit back each year, get special discounts and extended return timeline!! They have tons of outdoor clothes and gear as well. Typically sells high end brands so not the least expensive options but all is quality and have long warranties or guarantees. Store is clean. One wish is they have more women's clothing, seemed like there were more varied Male clothing options. Will be back to get my shoes here again! Thank you read more

I've gone to this REI a few times now and I will say, every employee was wonderful and so helpful in figuring out what is best for me. This REI has a lot of camping gear, great shoe selection, some ski boots, the used section has a lot to look through too. While this store is pricey, you cannot beat quantity over quality. I would like to mention that Renee was wonderful in helping us find a backpack for my boyfriend, she also made me feel less scared to go camping and experience the outdoors. I went in yesterday to purchase a new pair of shoes. When I went to the back of the store (where the shoes are located) there was what appeared to be a running club of sorts and a staff member was socializing intensely with the group. I waited for several minutes to have her turn around/for a pause in her conversation when a member of the group pointed at me to help direct the employees attention and she abruptly turned around and acted irritated that I was seeking assistance and said something along the lines that she would not help me and she hopped on her walkie talkie and called Ben over. Ben was great. The other woman was awful, dismissive, and rude. If you are (1) the only visible employee in a section and (2) are still wearing your full uniform, even if you are off or this is your specific event that you are hosting, the treatment that I received was not warranted. read more

Wow I just had a very good experience at REI! Well not me precisely but my wife. We came here to check out hiking shoes for the first time. Not knowing much about it in general, the staff here was super helpful and very knowledgeable. Very very big praise to Kathy! I don't know how many different shoes we tried on. She was incredibly patient with us and wanted the perfect fit. She brought out multiple sizes of the same shoe and even taught us different ways to tie a boot for different scenarios, stability, preferences. It was like I was watching a hiking clinic. Even though she was helping multiple people at the time. She still had the time management to come back and check on us and cleared away the different shoes we didn't want anymore. Very outstanding! I hadn't backpacked in a decade, and was looking for a new pack. I was pretty much clueless, but the awesome employee was so helpful in fitting it for me and helping me to prioritize what features were important, and he even helped me to compare prices. There were even sandbags of various sizes to help me feel how the pack would feel when packed. My pack ended up working perfectly for my 5 day trip, I couldn't have asked for better. It fit so comfortably and the weight was well distributed on my hips. So glad I went in to get it fit (I was considering buying one online and would have ended up with something totally different that probably wouldn't fit as well!), and so thankful for the help! read more

I went in with great expectations. Left feeling drained and due attorney fees for pro se/pro per for how well I advocated for myself and understood the law. After a close to 15 minute back and forth on the law, what's legally binding, the store policy at time of purchase versus the change of the store policy AFTER my purchase. Whew... we were able to agree on a refund after I presented her store policy scenario back to her, she knew it made no sense. However, it did not require this much energy. I'd like to leave it at that because it was quite disturbing to not want honor your guarantee on your own receipt and try to tell me the new policy which is not applicable to me as my purchase was made prior. Hhmmm... Fascinating. I was even hopeful for an exchange or repair. Now I'll probably just look for some elsewhere. The HAVE to be pink. It's my favorite color and I buy as much pink as possible. I'm giving three stars simply because she finally decided to refund me after having to explain how the policy on the receipt will hold up in small claims and I'd hate to take it there just to have them take ownership and accountability of the policy which I purchased my shoes under not pilfer me out of my money or shoes. It's the principle that matters and counts. Thank you for doing the right thing REI. I asked the cashier for her name to thank her for the refund. She deflected. i came in here yesterday looking for some snow gear and IMMEDIATELY was followed by this old white lady with glasses. Mind you i wasn't doing anything suspicious i was just looking at their items with my sister and bf. She kept looking over trying to see if we were doing something and came up to us twice about if we needed help and if we were apart of their loyalty program or something like shouldn't you be asking that at the front when i check out. I bought a pair of Topo shoes at REI Dublin, CA store recently. With a moderate office wearing only for three months, I noticed a tear in the upper fabric and went to the store for either and exchange or return. However, the store manager refused to make any exchange or returns claiming it is a "normal wear and tear" based on the sole of the shoes. But the tear is in the upper fabric, not the sole. I have been an REI member for over 20 years and always trusted REI quality products and good customer service. But I am really disappointed this time. I expected better from REI, especially considering their satisfaction guarantee. I am hoping they'll reconsider, but for now. I am really let down. read more

I have been an REI customer for decades, and the only thing that's constant (for me, at least) is the tension between how much I like the convenience of having everything outdoor in one place versus my annoyance at the inflated prices. I understand the costs of having a brick-and-mortar presence, and the price of convenience, but, still, it grates on me. It's back to REI when I need something immediately, and their warranty / return policy is good, but I'd like to feel better about patronizing REI. Especially irksome is the markup on clothing. Decades after the mystique of fabricating specialty clothing is long past, the markup is still there. Sigh. read more

One star for management and customer service. Purchased a 3 in 1 jacket, fleece pants, and couple of gators. I inquired about Black Friday sales and if they offered price protection. The sales rep who helped me said no problem, these go on sale in a couple days. Just come back on this day and we will refund the difference. I went on my trip and popped into the store today, only to be told that the sale ended yesterday. I thought this was the Black Friday sale. The sales rep left that part out and was unaware that there was a deadline. Spoke to customer service and they said if I bought online, they would have adjusted the price. They said for in-store purchases, it's up to the store manager. They said, however, they are happy to send a gift card for the difference. No thank you. I will return the entire order and shop elsewhere. The manger has the ability to honor it, but chose not to....he will not receive my business and I will encourage others to shop at different location or competitors to receive better customer service. I just told her what I needed then she was able to do the exact recommendation for me. She was so patient, knowledge and knowing clients concerns and all her shoes!! Top marks for customer service. Was so excited for the annual, co-op member discount that I went in to try out various day packs/hiking backpacks. Ended up being assisted by no less than THREE different employees before I left the store, each one courteous and extremely knowledgeable about the gear I was perusing. One member even assisted me in adjusting various styles of backpacks to see which was the most comfortable for me. I definitely appreciated geeking out on gear in good company. Would highly recommend for anyone seeking recommendations on quality gear. REI staff members are exceptional humans. read more

What an odd experience and definitely not enjoyable. Stopped in on Tuesday to look at a backpack I found online. I asked for help and a saleswoman said they were in the back. She said if I wanted it she had to take it to the cashier and just stared at me when I was checking it out. I felt like I was not trusted with a $70 item. I couldn't just look at it on my own and then decide? Then came the hard sell about buying a membership. She was definitely not pleased when I said I wasn't interested. Round 2 of the hard sell with the cashier and she too didn't like what she was hearing. No I didn't want a $30 membership when I rarely shop here, even with a coupon. Is that really that hard to understand? Definitely not a pleasant experience. I don't plan to return except to return the backpack. It turned out to be not what I needed at all. read more

The customer service at this REI is VASTLY different than that of the Fremont location. I've been to both locations twice for various items and feel after both experiences, the employees here are rude and just don't seem to care. During their mega REI sale last month, I waited at the cash register for a good 3 minutes to purchase my item one time while a cashier was chatting with another employee, not even about anything customer related, but their weekend plans. Employee banter is fine and all but can you save it for after you've rung me up for my one item? I feel like that was really unprofessional considering there was a line of at least 3/4 customers behind me. The second time, I had inquired about a climbing harness they had in stock according to the website. Both Dublin and Fremont had the same one and I only chose to go to Dublin because it's closer to me. When I called this location asking to put it to the side so I could come in and purchase it in an hour, I received a curt answer and was told by a woman on the phone that I couldn't do that..?? I have no idea if it's because they didn't have it or what but I decided to not waste my time on this place. I then called the Fremont location and I received a completely different response telling me they'd have it ready within a half hour. When I got there, they had a whole bunch of harnesses on sale in my size put in a bag for me to try out the different brands and someone ready to help me with fitting! Hence the emphasis on this location being VASTLY different from Fremont's. I love the REI in Fremont and would recommend for anyone to drive out there if you're looking for a better customer service experience (etc. for fittings, sizing or general questions). I strongly believe this store is not reflective of REI and that going to a different location would be much better to most people giving poor reviews. It's not worth getting anything from this location unless you're in-store shopping and have no questions for the employees. read more
