So I was here today and I feel so bad I didn't get his name (short hair) guy helped me for a good 30-40 minutes today without me buying anything! I had a gift card to use on Hoka.com so I was wanting to figure out which was best for me. I didn't disclose this at first, and he was so helpful with my sizing issues.. "Look for Sadie, the Border Collie!" I had a chance to chat with the manager, and he emphasized that the store specializes in "On foot Adventures." So that means hiking, running, or backpacking. If you're looking for a kayak, this is probably the wrong store. But if you're looking for something related to running or hiking, this is the place for you. Perhaps their most impressive product is their selection of running shoes. A ton of running shoes to choose from for both men and women. Also, they have a lot of hiking and backpacking shoes. This includes Lowa, which is my favorite. They also have Oboz. The staff were very helpful explaining to me the various features of their hiking shoes. This is really a fun store to just look around and get some ideas on different type of shoes or equipment. I found everybody to be super friendly and helpful. They also don't mind it if you bring your dog in. Whilst I was visiting, there was a border collie and an English bulldog that came in to say hello to all the customers. My hiking buddy suggested a ULA backpack, we live in marin and sunrise in Livermore was one of two stores in the greater SF Bay Area that carried them. It was Black Friday, the day after thanksgiving no traffic for the hour plus drive, we arrived at the tiny Livermore store and were surprised of the color and size selection of ULA backpacks. Heather was awesome, and super patient as I tried on FiVE different packs, loaded them up with 25lbs of gear and marched around the store for 10 minutes each go. We narrowed down the model, size and color and were pleasantly surprised to hear all sales of $125 or more were $25 off!! Forget the big box stores and buying online!! Not only did she find us exactly what we needed, she helped us understand the different types of fueling they offered and find the one perfect for an upcoming race. I wanted to write a review of the excellent customer service I received at sunrise, especially from Phil and Heather(?). I purchased a Onewheel from them and the biggest perk is that they included a fender for free, unlike some of the other onewheel authorized dealers. I actually had a problem with my Onewheel on day 1. It would not charge correctly. So I called Phil and he immediately told me he would switch it out with another one he had in inventory! He asked a couple questions just to help troubleshoot it and when he determined it was possibly defective, he just said to bring it back and switch it out. (Keep in mind this is a very expensive piece of equipment). Awesome! Thanks Sunrise for some of the best customer service I've had in awhile! I would purchase here again w confidence. I too have been shopping at Sunrise since it was in the old building down town. One of the reasons I will continue to support this business is the customer service that I receive. Yes, I could probably buy the same gear online at a discount but I don't and the reason is that I can go into the store and Rob, Kim, or even Phil always greet me by name and ask what new adventure I am planning. If I need advice on gear or just an opinion on a trail any one of them are willing to spend the time to talk to me. You can not get that online and no discount is worth it if you end up with the wrong gear for the conditions. I have participated in the Igloo seminars with both Rob and Kim and confess to learning some of my original winter backpacking skills from the trip with Rob. Finally, if you think you may be interested in a sport, Sunrise offers gear rentals at a respectable price. If you decide you want to purchase gear they have an annual rental gear sale (this week-end) where I have picked up awesome gear deals! read more

This review is for the kayak rental center at Del Valle. Our instructor, Ryan, was great! He's at least 10-15 years younger than us, so I was a little worried when we saw him. Turns out, Ryan was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and made us feel comfortable. He taught us about the differences between kayaks, different paddles, and made it all fun. We spent 3 hours in a lesson and it passed in no time. The lesson was so enjoyable and reasonably priced that we signed up for another one next week. They do accept credit cards, but bring cash for a tip. Also, you have to pay $6 to get into Del Valle. You don't have to take a lesson to rent the kayaks, but I highly recommend them. It's so much fun and you learn how to get very comfortable in the kayaks. By the end of the morning, I was rolling out of the kayak with a skirt on, something I was not prepared to do at the beginning of the lesson. Warning:You may want to buy a kayak by the end of the lesson...we're already looking! read more

My girlfriend and I stopped by the store to pick up hiking boots for me, walking shoes for Tammy. Got a few other odds and ends as well. Heather was working with another customer when I first arrived, so I listened in while she explained features on some shoes. She was very much on top of her game when it came to the shoes, very knowledgeable. She then spent about 30-45 minutes tag teaming with me, Tammy, and another customer. She did a great job multi tasking, measuring our feet, and getting us into the right shoes for what we needed. I learned a new way of tying my laces that takes care of a pressure point problem I have been having for years. She was great! A good word for Ted as well. He took on the dubious task of dealing with my feet and a set of custom Superfeet that Heather had recommended. Ted has helped me out with kayak gear on prior visits as well. Good guy. Personable. Thanks for what is getting exceedingly rare these days...knowledgeable staff and great customer service! PS I see a comment in a prior post about the place being over priced. Take a look of brand/model to brand/model and I think you will find Sunrise is very reasonable. They stock quality gear and provide excellent service. Yes, that will cost more than what you can get at Walmart for some no name brand. But you get what you pay for when it comes to outdoor gear these days. Cheap stuff will fail far sooner than the quality brands. read more

Let me start off by saying I did not know a single thing about hiking but after coming here I still don't but at least I have what I need. Unfortunately I don't recall the nice lady who assisted my friend and I in purchasing shoes and other gear but I truly appreciate her patience and attention to detail in helping us find hiking shoes. Unbeknownst to me, i have been wearing the wrong shoe size for some time. It was until this lady measured my foot and explained that i was wearing a bigger size when I should be wearing a wider size. WOW... Dun dun dun moment. She also helped us pick out some hiking supplies and a book on hiking. While we ended up spending more than I wanted, I felt satisfied leaving with the necessary gear. read more

4wheelBob and myself love Sunrise Mountain Sports. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeble. Because 4WheelBob is in a wheelchair, his Backpacking gear has to be lite and compact. Almost every bit of his equipment used for a 4day 22mi wheelchair adventure on the Diablo Regional Trail came from Sunrise. Anything they don't carry in the store, Phil the manager will be happy to have ordered. I think 90% of my hiking and pleasure shoes have some from Sunrise. In addition to being a great outdoors store, they are very supportive of the community. Every year for the past 4 years then have donated 8-10 weeks of their window space to promote Relay For Life here in Livermore. This donation is more precious than they realize. So for all they do for the community and the support they give their fellow outdoors people and their willingness to go the extra mile for any customer, I give Sunrise Mtn Sports 2 thumbs up, 5 stars, and a great big thank you. read more

Needed very specific sleeping bag for my long walk in the woods. Only place I could find it was Sunrise, but Livermore CA is a long drive from Massachusetts. Spoke with Heather who not only carefully packed and shipped the bag, but spent tons of time with me on the phone discussing other gear. Can't wait to visit this shop next time I'm in CA. The store itself is a bit different. Sunrise Sports does not have a whole lot of floor space, and it is two levels high. The botton floor has clothing and rock climbing equipment, and the upper level carries kayak gear and Thule car rack accessories. The building has high (20+foot) vaulted ceilings, which means that the second floor is a small deck that does not have all of the floor space that the first floor has. Being that this store has limited floor space, almost all of their kayaks are hung up on the upper parts of the walls around the inside of their building. This setup was nice for being able to see all of their different models. On the other hand, it sucks because you cannot really get a close look at the kayak that you are interested in without hastling a salesperson to take it down. I had an issue with an item that I purchased, and I was not very happy with what Rob (the owner) did. Other than Rob, his staff is pretty friendly and helpful. read more

Called around to try to find a certain backpack. No place had it other that Sunrise Mtn Sport. When I called the lady on the phone was super helpful and she put it on hold for me. As soon as I got there, they knew what I wanted. I didn't get chance to browse around too much, but from what I saw, they have a variety of things you would need to enjoy the outdoors. I feel like you get more personal service from people that ACTUALLY use the equipment. I feel like they want to teach you and help you have a great experience...not just selling you something. Super nice staff. Care more about getting the right fit and shoe for you than making money. We'll ask about a product and if it's right, but one of the staff mentioned we don't really need it. Not pushy at all. I'm soooo happy with my hiking boots. They're the only place I can find that sells COMFORTABLE, CUSHIONED (ORTHOLITE), HIKING AND SNOW, RAIN, MUD SNEAKER BOOTS. I started off with the Altra hiking boots RSM (rain, snow, mud), but they helped me suggest Hoka (water repellent or waterproof) for comfort as well. I purchased the Hoka. I've been to several places and tried on a lotttt of boots. I'm extremely happy with my purchase. My feet were probably the most comfortable in the hike compared to everyone else. Suggestion, purchase shoes at least 1 size up and wear hiking socks when trying them on. read more
