The customer service at this REI is VASTLY different than that of the Fremont location. I've been to both locations twice for various items and feel after both experiences, the employees here are rude and just don't seem to care. During their mega REI sale last month, I waited at the cash register for a good 3 minutes to purchase my item one time while a cashier was chatting with another employee, not even about anything customer related, but their weekend plans. Employee banter is fine and all but can you save it for after you've rung me up for my one item? I feel like that was really unprofessional considering there was a line of at least 3/4 customers behind me. The second time, I had inquired about a climbing harness they had in stock according to the website. Both Dublin and Fremont had the same one and I only chose to go to Dublin because it's closer to me. When I called this location asking to put it to the side so I could come in and purchase it in an hour, I received a curt answer and was told by a woman on the phone that I couldn't do that..?? I have no idea if it's because they didn't have it or what but I decided to not waste my time on this place. I then called the Fremont location and I received a completely different response telling me they'd have it ready within a half hour. When I got there, they had a whole bunch of harnesses on sale in my size put in a bag for me to try out the different brands and someone ready to help me with fitting! Hence the emphasis on this location being VASTLY different from Fremont's. I love the REI in Fremont and would recommend for anyone to drive out there if you're looking for a better customer service experience (etc. for fittings, sizing or general questions). I strongly believe this store is not reflective of REI and that going to a different location would be much better to most people giving poor reviews. It's not worth getting anything from this location unless you're in-store shopping and have no questions for the employees. read more

What an odd experience and definitely not enjoyable. Stopped in on Tuesday to look at a backpack I found online. I asked for help and a saleswoman said they were in the back. She said if I wanted it she had to take it to the cashier and just stared at me when I was checking it out. I felt like I was not trusted with a $70 item. I couldn't just look at it on my own and then decide? Then came the hard sell about buying a membership. She was definitely not pleased when I said I wasn't interested. Round 2 of the hard sell with the cashier and she too didn't like what she was hearing. No I didn't want a $30 membership when I rarely shop here, even with a coupon. Is that really that hard to understand? Definitely not a pleasant experience. I don't plan to return except to return the backpack. It turned out to be not what I needed at all. read more

Note to self (this isn't a review) everyone inside this store (salespeople, cashier, greater, janitors) will only answer your questions if you answer their question of "are you a member? You should be, let me tell you the advantages" And I go can anyone just answer my question please? I just want a bicycle pump. My entire trust in Goretex was thrown out the window when Hunter from this location told me that even with proper care of their REI Goretex using Nikwax, Goretex jackets will not be waterproof after 3 to 4 years! I owned their REI Goretex jacket for 4 years and all she can say is that due to wear and tear, it is ok for water to sip inside the jacket after only 5 minutes even though I had reapplied the Nikawax recently. My jacket is very well maintained during its 4 years plus and I am now not sure if Hunter knows her stuff or maybe the supposedly Goretex jacket by REI is actually using non-Goretex lining. I have never felt more cheater than today. read more

Older lady walks up and rudely say "Don't try on the display shoe, I'll be there when im done with other customers" I have never heard a rule that you couldn't try a display shoe on... another employee helps us out and grabs me a box from the back, coincidentally it was the other pair of the display shoe that she was tripping about.. lol read more

On 3/23 I went in to the Dublin REI store and asked to speak with Julian. Dorn was on duty and asked me why I wanted to speak with Julian. I informed Dorn because I have been dealing with Julian over the phone and he asked me to ask for him when I was here. I added that I also preferred to speak in Spanish. Dorn then motioned with his hands to leave because nobody there spoke Spanish and actually said get out of here. Dorn has no Business working with the public and it is shameful for REI to condone such racist behavior. Richie was the manager on duty that handled my transaction without incident, but very disappointed with REI allowing Dorn to represent them so poorly. read more

Went to REI today to buy some straps, the cashier was not very friendly and ended up charging me twice for the same product I bought 1 set of straps and she rang it up twice. My fault for not questioning it, but because I requested the receipt to be sent to email and the store had bad reception on my phone I couldnt see the transaction until I got home. I would have at least thought that the cashiers would verify quantity and product before finalizing the sale. I guess I trusted the cashier too much.... lesson learnt read more

Good help is hard to find, especially after the Pandemic. I have learned definitely to curtail my expectations now, when it comes to customer service, but these guys hit a new low. Being a resident of the Tri-Valley area, I have shopped at this Dublin REI plenty of times before. I've gotten used to employees never saying hi or even acknowledging my existence- that was the case even before Covid hit. It's normal to have to try and flag someone down for help. This time, I called the store inquiring about a product that REI carries. While shopping online, the system said that Dublin did not have any. I could order it and have it sent the store, but it would take 5 days. But I have a lengthy history of working retail, so I know that chances are very high that the on-hands inventory count is wrong. My phone call was directed to Action Sports. I was looking for a very specific Swix brand ski wax. The sales associate said he would check the floor for the product. He returned saying that they actually had a few of them. I told him that I would come right away. He told me that he would have one waiting for me behind the cashier counter. I got in my car and drove my 11 miles in the rain till I got to the store. I decided to cruise the ski wax section to see if maybe there were other products I might be interested in. I found one ski wax product and although it was Swix, it was not the one that I had inquired about. I waited in line at the cashier counter until I was summoned. The cashier retrieved the product from the backroom area and it was the same item that I found hanging in the ski wax section moments before. Not good. I explained that I called to the store and someone told me that the store did indeed have what I was looking for, so I rushed down in the pouring rain to get it, and guess what? it's not what I had asked for! We walked over to the ski wax section to see if maybe the sales associate grabbed the wrong item. Of course what he had was the ONLY product. He went to the ski shop to see if maybe they had some in the back. The shop didn't even know that product existed. I was pretty pissed. I understand that the poor cashier was trying to help me, but simply put I just wasted a gallon of gas and an hour of my time to make a trip for nothing. When I got home, I navigated my way to the REI website and left feedback of my bad experience at the Dublin store. The website asked if I would like a follow from the manager with 2 days and I answered yes. Two days came and went. No follow up. as expected. As I stated before- the service at REI is what I have come to expect, but this time to actually waste my resources and not give two hoots about it? just a shrug of the shoulders? that's probably the WORST "customer service" that I have ever had. More disappointing is that Corporate didn't care and the store manager didn't care. With other online stores like Moosejaw and brick and mortar stores like Dick's abound, those customer dollars are getting more and more precious. To just thumb their nose at me doesn't bode well for REI as a whole. But that is the world in which now we live- where giant corporations (some hiding behind the guise of being a "co-op" for tax purposes) don't care about the customers, only his/her dollars. They can live with one pissed off customer. There are plenty of other customers out there. I'll soon be returning my REI membership. read more

We came to REI looking for hiking shoes since we have an upcoming trip planned for Zion and Bryce Canyon. It would also be nice to have sturdier shoes for local hikes too. It was our first time shopping at REI and we dropped a small fortune here. The employees here are friendly and offer great service and advice. Despite being smaller than Dick's, REI has a good selection of quality merchandise. Many of the hiking shoes, backpacks, and jackets are lightweight, stylish, and functional. Although prices can be high, becoming a REI member can offer savings. The REI membership costs $20 for a lifetime membership, but this day they offered a $20 store credit to use over the next month. Purchases also net a 10% dividend that can be applied to future purchases. Lastly, REI members get access to special returned items at discounted prices. Sounds like a pretty good deal! Judith was extremely helpful with helping us find the right shoe. I opted for Merrell's Moab2 Waterproof which I found super-comfy and comes in wide-sizes unlike other popular brands from Keen. Previously I had zero luck finding wide-width hiking shoes from DSW and Costco. The wife also found plenty of outdoor gear that can be used for hikes or everyday use: rucksack from Patagonia, hooded lightweight down jacket from Marmot, and socks from Balega. read more

walked in for my Rad Mission e-bike tube change and brake adjustment, paid $86. I returned the following day for the weird clanking sounds. And the response I got your "bike is old, see the paint is fading" I told them my bike is fine, I dont have this issue until after I walked out of here. I asked if theres a remedy or clamp or what do you call that thing, straight he said nope because they don't make this model anymore, just completely dismissing me (probably because he noticed my English is bad) I emailed Rad Mission and showed the caused of the weird sound, immediately I got the reply its the "chain tensioner" . How can REI have bike crews who doesn't knows what a chain tensioner is?? And the guy who changed the tube is another character, I don't know , I just changed the tube... nice clap clap. Horrible customer service from the manager. Tried to exchange some defective snowboard goggles that were practically new but the lenses was defective . Isabelle the manager said she could make the exception since it was a few days past the return window but wouldn't because she didn't believe me that the lenses were defective. So wanted to come see another REI, been to about 3 different locations already and each has it's own character. This one has a crosswalk that no drivers stop at. Its inspiring, exciting and gets you thinking about how you need to spend less time in the office under fluorescent lamps and more time doing what you enjoy most: camping, biking, and Ned-Flanders-from-the-Simpsons-type fog walks. The people who shop here are not into fashion or showing off... they are confident and past the high school mentality being overly self conscious. A piece of clothing isn't going to impress them just because it appears expensive or has a large, well known designer logo. A shopper here wants function - something to preform as intended. If your hanging on the side of a cliff you want the rope you buy to hold you up with confidence. This is not the time to buy some sort of Walmart special from who knows where. Similarly, a shopper here wants running shorts that don't have the wearer debating whether or not to tear them off on the way home during second half of the run because they are simply unbearable. All the best preforming brands are here. The management team does all the homework - so you don't have to. Its sort of like anything at Costco with a Kirkland Signature label. Your probably going to find its a good value - but I would argue the bar is set much higher here than what Costco does for its house brand. Pick up a jacket... you can tell that the manufacturer was obsessive about the weight of the fabric and the fit. Admire the precise stitching. Furthermore, research a brand here and its known for sustainability and treating those that made the product well and fairly. If you are into night runs and Flanders fog walks be sure to get some shorts with some reflective material or bright yellow fabric or something... Hmmm, gets me thinking... maybe streakers are just people who buy cheap running shorts and they just couldn't take it anymore. read more

I absolutely want to thank Nuria and Dorn for helping me in my osprey backpack fitting. I did my first three days backpack trip. Initially i got fitted for Osprey bag. I did my local hikes couple of times. It was causing strain on my neck. I was not sure if there was something wrong the way i was putting it on, that is causing me discomfort. It was a 55 L capacity. I had to get it changed to 65L capacity and also was nervous if the bigger size backpack will make my neck strain more. I went to REI Dublin, which is my home store. I have to thank Nuria and Dorn for helping me out and patiently listened and understood my concern. I was able to pick a Osprey Ariel 65L bag, which was very comfortable to walk with. Ordered 2 Hydroflask coffee cups from online, received emails stating my item is ready to be picked up, and I took a little longer to pick them up so I received an email saying pick up by this day or otherwise will be returned back. So I thought to myself, better go pick them up. Go there, was greeted by Gary, he went into the back and got me my box, he stated i'm going to open it up in front of you because it feels like there is only one in here. So he opens up the box and there is only one Hydroflask in there. Thank goodness that Gary's better judgement and great customer service prompted him to open up my package because if I would have drove home with one cup and not two I would have been PISSED. So then him and this guy named Brooks go in the back to and they can't find the red one, takes a good 10mins, and the bitch in me is coming back, because Brooks is talking about a possible refund and I told him " I didn't know REI looses packages, I wish I would have ordered from someone else" and that prompted him to call his manager, and his manager went in the back and found it!! Then Gary yet again opened the package in front of me and it was the right one. Ultimately, shout out to Gary for being a good worker and thorough at what he does. read more

Asked staff to get me another jacket because I didn't want the display one ( for a jacket that cost so much I need a new looking one). She seemed very annoyed first. Then bluntly said she didn't want to look for the one in the back. Then I asked the front lady working as the greeter for assistance. She rather seems perturbed and rude period. Explaining things to me like I was stupid. Later I picked up a jacket I ordered online, the cashier seemed like she just wanna get rid of me as soon as possible. No eye contact. No smiling. I normally like shopping at REI and have spent quite a bit of money over the years and have been satisfied with their customer service. Well today wasn't one of those days. I tried to return two pairs of sunglasses. I was able to return one pair but not able to return the other. Both pairs were over priced but not the issue. One of the glasses broke because they were cheaply made. The store manager stated that accidental damage was not covered. This was not the case. The glasses were crap and cheap. REI has become more greedy of the years. REI use to have a lifetime return policy and it changed to a year. Under both of their previous policies, you could return an item no matter what the issue. They used to guarantee 109% satisfaction. Now they have exceptions to their "100% satisfaction" policy so as to avoid having to return your money. So, much for customer satisfaction. read more

Came in to purchase a Patagonia jacket. Only one size of each was on the rack. I am a size medium and the only medium had a white spot on the sleeve. I politely asked the older lady near the shoes if she could grab me one out of the back. She very rudely grabbed the jacket and attempted to rub the spot out of the sleeve and said "here". Then continued with organizing. Taken aback by her bad attitude, I stood there looking at the spot for another minute and she said "are you actually serious about buying the coat?" Which I replied yes. She took the coat from my hands and handed it to another worker and said "can you lock this back up on the rack. There's a spot of the sleeve SUPPOSEDLY, and now I have to go get one from the back". She then returned with another medium that had dirt all over the back of it. Handed it to me and walked off. She seemed extremely inconvenienced. The dirt rubbed out of the coat and I purchased it anyway. However, since purchasing the coat I have considered returning it based simply on my interactions from this extremely rude employee, and purchasing elsewhere instead. I understand that it might be a small spot on the sleeve, but when purchasing a $400 jacket I'd prefer it to be spotless. I also don't appreciate the disrespectful attitude I received from said employee because I asked her to do a simple task that she is being paid to do. If you are going to be that miserable then maybe it's not the job for you. Wish I had a better experience at this store. I will not return based on this foul interaction with this woman. read more

I had a last minute camp out trip planned earlier in the day. I wanted to pick up a hammock. With COVID I couldn't just walk inside, the website said up to 3 days to have the items ready. I called hoping I could pay over the phone and head right over to get my items. She told me She wasn't able to do this. She informed me of the colors that were potentially in stock, and that they may be able to have them before the end of the curbside pick up hours. so I rolled the dice and picked a color and ordered. It was ready in less than 45 minutes, and I'm happy they were happily able to accommodate me and my last minute plans. Thank you REI Dublin! read more

Boxing Day was not the day to come. I've been to this location more than a few times and didn't realize, until today, that their parking lot continues behind the building...even that lot was full. I needed snow boots last minute and couldn't turn back despite my instincts to do just that. Walking in on a 30 person deep checkout line really tests ones resolve! I headed straight for the shoe section that was being managed by one woman. She seemed very thorough as she helped other customers but with the sheer volume of people it delayed things a bit. I spent my time asking for new sizes/styles all while testing the fit out on "Mount REI", their mini climbing rock. The helpful woman taught me a trick to keep my hiking boots tight will tying the knot and made some excellent recommendations that lead to a great purchase. The employee who helped me out with my Benchmade knife purchase was Wes. Great guy! He was extremely patient and friendly, I took quite a while examining the knifes to decide which one would fit my EDC needs. Wes stayed around and answered any questions I needed. Even got the knife I wanted from the back! Forgot to mention, if you are looking to purchase a Benchmade knife they only have 2 in stock for each knife. (Which is understandable since they are pretty pricy and high-end knifes) One on display and one in the back. So I suggest ya ask for the one in the back unless you want the one out on display with fingerprints lol. REI has the best deals! Ended up getting one of Benchmade's newest knifes, the Freek 560 which is listed for $120+ from different stores/websites for only $82! Only at REI! Do not get your skis/boards waxed here!!! I usually do not write reviews at all but my horrible experience here cannot go unheard. I recently dropped off my skis with them to get them hot waxed before this year's ski season started. When I got them back, I noticed some major new scratches, scuffs, and even small chunks that were chipped off from the top sides of my skis. For context, I bought these skis brand new in February 2023 and only used them once for the rest of that season. I took them back to the store and the store manager basically argued that these damages were my fault and could only have come from skiing as she insisted that they have a "safe" workshop. I definitely did a full assessment of my skis before dropping them off and would not have caused them any trouble at all if I knew that those damages were from me (learned my lesson to take pictures of my skis before I drop them off to get them waxed at a shop). At the end of it all, the damages were irreversible so I gave up, asked for my wax service refund, and left. I just can't believe they don't want to own up to their own mistakes. I understand that accidents can sometimes happen in their workshop but there is no transparency from them whatsoever when it comes to this. Their treatment with my new and expensive skis is just unacceptable. read more

I've taken classes here and regularly shopped here for a couple of years. The folks that work here have been just amazing. I have come here three times since they re opened with restrictions - part of it is just to feel normal and to feel hopeful. They were super super nice and everyone was friendly. Most of the folks in the store were fine and distancing. I thought the store was marked well and it was pretty clear. There ended up being some lines but probably that's unavoidable. During such times with such great staff I want to support them in any way possible. I've never had an issue with a return or with a product. The only times I've ever had an issue is finding someone to open the dressing rooms for try on :-) but that is a small thing and it's never taken more than 5 minutes. Love this store! read more

You cannot beat the customer service here. Everytime I go in whether for summer or winter sports needs I am always met with friendly service and helpful advice. I had an issue with my ski boots and luckily the expert in the department got me the right pair that never gives me the aches and pains of my old boots. I also had an issue with hiking boots and same is true for that department. I not only got the right pair but was taught WHY they were the best pair and how to test shoes!
