My husband and I visited the store and had a very disappointing experience. While he was trying on an $80 pair of slides, the associate approached him and asked whether the socks my husband was wearing belonged to the store. His tone and facial expression clearly implied that he thought we had taken merchandise without asking. The socks were my husband's own socks, and the entire interaction felt rude, condescending, and completely inappropriate. They don't even sell the same brand socks at the store. Rather than providing customer service, the associate made him feel accused and uncomfortable while shopping. Customer service training should include basic professionalism and respect. This REI is much bigger inside than expected from the outside. Everything is laid out nicely with plenty of room to see everything rather than cramped aisles and displays. Located right off the 5 and El Toro in the Trader Joe's shopping center, there is plenty of parking with a bakery just across the parking lot, and a great Mexican restaurant next door. They have lots of high end backpacking supplies, tents, shoes, clothing etc.. and they also have more budget friendly options. Not crazy about their pushing the "membership" but it's not a requirement so you can shop away without it... I think it does save you money over a few purchases. Lots of gifts to be had here.. I was surprised how many cool little things they had that made great gifts and are not camping specific. read more

This REI, which in the same shopping plaza as Trader Joe's, is very good but not my favorite. The customer service can be inconsistent. Since the store isn't as big as the one in Tustin, the selections of merchandise (for men, women, and children) are smaller. I appreciated how well an employee processed a return. I ordered online and the sizing wasn't right. She understood and took care of it quickly. Regarding online buying, a family member told me doing so was cheaper. What he said may have some truth to it but I don't think it's going to be the case in every situation. I liked the present of a REI gift card he gave me for Christmas, used it up, and spent more. REI is definitely a fun store to visit if you love the outdoors. They have everything you need from hiking gear to bikes to things as small as warm or cooling socks. I personally went to buy Hoka shoes. Ryan was the associate that helped me and he was very knowledgeable in his department. He guided me to the right shoes and colors of my liking and had me on my way in 20 minutes max. Overall a great experience and I highly recommend their membership for $30. My girlfriend liked my Garmin watch and its features that track my activities, health and overall wellness. To help her with this I suggested we check out REI since it was close to home and I had some gift cards. We walked in and I found the watch section quickly. We tried to navigate the different watches and this drew the attention of an REI staff member. He was great explaining the watches and also checking out what they had in stock. We also chatted about the history of REI and the likelihood that I would still be in their computer (I hadn't shopped at REI in many years due to other options being closer). When checking out, another staff member quickly found me in their computer, helped both my girlfriend and I with additional information of the watch. They even confirmed that as old as my gift cards were, they don't expire or lose value. This made the experience not only enjoyable but also a great value. Like the new layout and helpful sales associates on the floor but the checkout line here generally sucks. Today, there was one person cashiering and 3 other people up front putting stuff away and chatting it up. Guess they'd rather put stuff away than help customers and sell gear. I generally shop here for outdoor gear but today I walked out. Maybe the cashier could be encouraged to ask for help or the others could take some initiative and jump in. This store is terrifc , very clean and stocked with a lot of cool stuff. I brought my Giant Talon 2 mountain bike in for some adjustments, I was told about a 3 day turnaround, the shop called the next day, my bike was finished. Up until this point, REI in Tustin was the closest location to our home. When they demolished Marshall's and stated that REI would be opening up in its place, I was surprised. It seemed like such a small location for a business that's usually quite large in size. Nevertheless, once construction began, we became excited to have an REI so close to home. REI is located in the city of Laguna Hills, just off of the 5 freeway. You can exit El Toro or Lake Forest and work your way down the windy street that runs parallel to the freeway. There is enough parking to accommodate customers who frequent the local businesses on the property. The exterior is similar to other REI locations with two axes serving as door handles on the front door. It seems like every REI has a similar layout, so if you're familiar with these stores, you'll know how to maneuver through with ease. REI is known for being pricey, but it's been my go to place for so many years. They have plenty of outdoor gear and supplies for novice to professional outdoorsmen. There's also a small section for pet gear so that you can take your four-legged friend along for the journey. The sales section is where you'll usually find the deepest discounts, so make sure that you check those racks because you could save a significant amount of money in the end. Speaking of saving money!!!! They have a rack near the door with slightly used items. They have been returned by customers and have been used one or two times. These items are discounted and you can find some good bargains. The only caveat to this is that you must be a member to purchase any of these items. You pay a one time fee and then you'll enjoy the perks that REI has to offer. Also, they have their annual sale which is referred to as a "garage sale". That is when you'll find the deepest discounts. This is when the lines are the longest! Be prepared to wait in line for a while!!!! It's easier to just to make your purchases online and have them delivered to your doorstep. One thing that I love about this store is their incredible return policy. If you've had the item for a while and it falls apart, they'll take it back. You'll be able to exchange it for something else or you'll be given store credit. It's insane! One time, my snow boots fell apart and I brought them back a couple of years later. They actually gave me store credit for them since they were gently worn. It was easy for me because I'm a member and they could see the purchase history. This is one reason why I recommend becoming a member. The perks are amazing! Members can also look forward to that annual dividend check if you spend some serious money during the previous year! As you purchase full price items, they tally up your total for the year. They send you a check for 10% of your annual spending and you can apply that toward the purchase of any items within the store. REI is the perfect store to find gear for your outdoor adventures. It can be overwhelming at times, but it's worth your while to check it out. You never know what you'll find when you're in the store. read more

Had a really poor experience here with 2 of my kids 5 and 10. Bike shop employe used unpleasant tone with my kids wanting to test bikes abd find a correct size. We ware waiting over 20+ min in service line and kids ware getting bored so they kept on trying bikes. He used same tons with me and called me out to be an adult and stop my kids from being kids. That crossed a line for me... This is not how you treat a young family, a father, and a customer. This should be a place where family has fun, gets excited about outdoors! Not being disciplined about their insurance policies regarding bikes and kids being yelled at for being what they should be excited about bicycles. Manager approached me trying to reason the tone in better way but it was too late I got our bike we brought for service and left. read more

The store itself is so well organized, clean and inspirational. But what truly makes Laguna Hills the best REI I've ever been to is the staff. In today's world, excellence is not common. Emma, who was at the register, personifies attention to detail, genuine care and true excellence. In small talk, my husband explained to her that I have been having health issues with forever plastics in my clothing. That's why we were there to buy Merino wool. Immediately, she looked at all o f the tags from the clothing we assumed was pure wool, and found out two of the 3 pieces actually had over 40% polyester. She went even further and went back to the clothing area with us and found 2 pieces that were 100% wool. Emma also has a great personality, sense of humor. Before we left, we asked to speak to her manager since we were so impressed. When Lisa came out to talk with us, we were blown away. She, too, has that same level of care and excellence. We are definitely fans of REI, and will always be loyal to the Laguna Hills location! read more

South county's best kept secret. What a treat to finally have an REI within a 5 minute drive from home. Adding this now to my list of post work strolls especially since it shares the same center as Trader Joes. Had the pleasure of joining the opening weekend festivities and it was a lot of fun. Tons of swag freebies from many vendors. Great selection of gear - camping, biking, hiking, climbing... you name it. Love the open space lay out. Not as much shoe selection & variety yet as the Tustin store but it is enough. Haven't seen the winter sports section just yet, but hoping they'll have it for this season. Lifetime membership for $30 ($20 many many years ago when I got it). Gives you 20% off full price items a few times a year. Makes for easy returns if products don't work out within the year of purchase. I love that they have exclusive REI Laguna Hills merch (really nice stickers & a tote bag) for purchase, of course. Came in during the Memorial Day sale and it was packed! But they had a lot of staff helping out. I was there specifically for a pair of hiking shoes for me and for my toddler, and the three people I interacted with in the shoe section were really helpful (except one person who asked what I needed, took photos of the shoes, told me she would be right back, then went on a 15min break). The prices were great during the sale. Plus, even though the line was long, it didn't take long to check out. It's not the biggest REI, but they have a good selection. They also have the members outlet section in the back as well. I'll be back to look at some camping gear! read more

Great space and an even better location--REI always delivers on service, but this visit was next level. I came in looking for a winter jacket and ended up grabbing a North Face puffer that was already 30% off (score!). When I went to check out, the employee casually let me know there was another sale coming up next week and said if this item gets discounted further, I could just reach out and they'd credit me the difference. I don't often shop at REI but I've been a member for years. This new location is closer to home but it is a bit smaller than the Tustin location. Once a member, you can shop the member's only sales along with the different gently used items. I had ordered some shoes online for my husband who happens to be between sizes in different brands. I thought I got it right this time but it turns out the shoes were still too big so off to the store for an in-person return, we went. Service was outstanding. I was asked why I was returning and whether the shoes were worn outside or not. I told them "too big" and "never worn outdoors". My money was returned to the card I paid with and I was on my way in no time. I walked around the store to take a look at the different items for sale. My husband was looking at some of the backpacks and luggage options from Osprey. I looked at some of the dog toys in the pet section. Huge store that's really well organized! From the outside you'd never know it was this big, but the interior is spacious and stocked with all the adventure gear you'd need. For their opening there are some vendors out in the lot to support and everyone's been helpful. Will definitely be back here before my next camp trip. read more

Outstanding REI location close to home! Been here multiple times since they had their grand opening last year and the service has always been outstanding - I favor this location more than the one at Tustin Marketplace as that area can get unbelievably crazy and packed. Overall layout of this REI is also better to navigate. Parking is a breeze as they share the huge lot with only a handful of other small stores (the major one being Trader Joe's) but other than that the parking is always plentiful and easy. Did a lot of research on ChatGPT and decided I needed to speak with a human since AI was giving me such contradicting answers. Spoke with Alan O. and was completely blown away by his patience and knowledge. He explained the ins and outs of the difference between gravel bikes and endurance road bikes and helped me narrow down my selection to the appropriate bike model and size that would suit me best. The guy in the bike section took one look at my bike and said he can't work on it. I'm not too sure what that's about but I have had my bike worked on at rei since I've bought it online. It is an e bike and I just don't understand if my bike was too dirty or what the issue was. I just needed my brakes done and I'm not sure the excuse of not having a lift for my bike would be appropriate. I have a membership here for what? What a joke. read more

I love everything about this REI - it's small but well stocked the staff are well informed and friendly. Today a talk young man helped me, I wish I would've looked at this name tag, because he was wonderful! There was a price discrepancy between the price on the register and the price on the shelf, he walked over and looked with me, instead of just using the radio, then he walked me out to my car which was so helpful because I had my 2 year old with me. He was very patient and communicative when he was having an issue with the computer, and the overall energy of the team here was so great. Best REI experience I have had in 20 years. read more

Went in Thursday at noon to try and find a windbreaker under $100. No luck. Prices are sky high. Only one staff person assigned to men's clothing, and she was busy telling people what size socks they needed. Need two people on the floor please. But it's not about that. It's about the clown show at the register. Standing in line for 10 minutes gave me plenty of time to observe Starting from left to right The male cashier is slow and unsure. After slowly ringing up a large order he forgot to take the plastic security device off some clothes. The customer set off the alarm which required this cashier to leave his register, run outside and bring the customer back to go through each article until he found it. Mr Delay I'll call him. The lady in the middle with Tats on left arm had to ask Shelley questions on how to ring up a customer for EACH customer she was checking out. Her multiple questions slowed down Shelley. I'll call her Ms "First Day. No Training. " Shelley took a long time with the guy in front of me, and once that guy left I walked up to the register and she walked away from her register to joke with the manager to her left. The manager participated in their joking and didn't tell Shelley to get back to her register and do the customer service she is paid for. Her name is "Ms don't give a damn. " Obviously I'm not going back and I'll tell others. If this store just opened they need an intervention. read more

I've been going to REI for years at the Tustin location but they opened one up closer to me in laguna hills. This is the worst REI I have been to. The customer service is appalling. I went there to by hiking sandals for my kids, one employee was there and maybe 3 customers. He was helping one and I went over next to him waiting my turn to ask for help. He did not even acknowledge me. He finished with the customer and then purposely walked away from me and went around an aisle. Another customer then started ti ask him questions. I went up again and he still ignored me and then when he was done. He walked off again. At this point I was livid. I just left but honestly I will never shop at this store again. Not sure if it's because gen z employees are just stupid or the store itself does not promote customer service or offer their employees training. read more
