Went to the store for a curbside pickup for some hiking shoes I ordered online. The whole experience probably took all of 2 minutes. Nice and easy. I had to take the boots back though because the colors looked different online. I also didn't think they were that comfortable for $100 on sale. My return was just as fast as the pickup. I looked around and wanted to buy everything, so I had to get out of there lol. REI always has everything you need for any sport or camping activity. This was my second time at a REI and I cannot believe the push for membership. As soon as I walked in the sales associate gives a long speech about the (non benefits) of membership. My first pet peeve is if I have a question I'll approach you. Again while at the cash register another push to get membership. We came here after being denied a shoe return by REI Arcadia, and not for a good reason either. FYI, the shoes hurt, wore out quickly, and was the first pair of shoes I've ever purchased for over $100. They were not great. We were denied a return because they were essentially "too worn in", told to contact the mfg, despite having the 1-year return policy guarantee, and returning it after less than 6 months. REI Manhattan Beach (100 mile round trip!!) treated us way better, tried to help us get into equipment better suited for our needs, AND ACCEPTED OUR RETURN WITHOUT HESITATION. Everyone at REI Manhattan Beach was friendly, awesome, the place was actually busy, and the location was near other establishments where we also checked out. I will personally make the effort to come here (and their secondhand store, too!) next time in lieu of another location. 10/10, great job at fixing a problem, guys. read more

Bought ascis running shoes here 3 months ago. Two holes formed on upper front and when I tried to return them they denied saying it was normal wear and tear. I don't even run only walk. Came here to buy a bladder for my osprey day lite hiking backpack. Upon entry, there were 2 workers that greeted me which I thought, wow the customer service here is amazing! There's a section on the store where there's a backpack specialist (at least, that's what I gathered, I'm sure there's more to it! haha) who helped me out with which size is the best with my backpack. After giving me the recommended bladder size, I told him that I was preparing for the half dome hike, and he gave me great tips on what to do and not to do during the hike. I always appreciate tips toward a safer hiking trip so that's another plus on the customer service! When it was time to go to the register, Marissa helped me out with the purchase and even getting a co-op membership. I always enjoy coming here even though my wallet cries after each visit :,) Their products are generally more expensive but you definitely get good quality products out of it. They also have another store in the same plaza that's relatively cheaper that sells products second hand for anyone who's strictly on a budget! read more

To start -- the staff here is super friendly, and the parking is easy. It's also in a great location! My sons both scored great hiking gear here recently at the gear sale. If you have kids who are constantly growing and you don't want to spend a lot on their gear, or you want to get gear and pay less than full price, definitely checkout the gear sale, it's on the other side of Old Navy. They have a lot of gear, that is from returns from what I can tell, and you just have to look at it closely to make sure you want to buy it, because - no returns!!! You also have to get a membership to shop the gear sale, but it's not much at all and totally worth it. read more

It was my first time at REI and I was in need of a decent travel backpack. The asian-appearing gentleman saw my look of curiosity and confusion in one section filled with camping backpacks. He kindly informed me there were more bags, as well as duffles, on the other end of the store. After re-directing me to a more appropriate section (medium sized bags/daily use), he kindly let me know he was able to assist if I needed anything. This service act stood out because he needed minimum detail on my shopping needs. He was able to assist by observing a guest in need and execute. Rare these days! John was such a delight! He informed me of several aspects of services, membership, and other offerings at REI - sharing the upcoming runner's event, partnerships, information on apparel, history of REI, and much more! He's an all star and truly an asset to the team. He is one of the main reasons I'll be returning! His thorough and passionate insights on the company are one of many reasons I'll be back! During COVID I didn't realize all of the local bike shops are swamped and repairs take months. I called several shops trying to get a tuneup and the only appointment i could get was 2 months away! Ironically... on a local shop's yelp i noticed someone commenting "this shop is nothing like REI". They actually meant it in a negative way but i decided to try REI since I had no other options and was so happy I did! They gave my bike a great tuneup and it took 4 days! Thanks so much! read more

Walked into the shoe area upstairs. Picked out one I liked so approached the Asian shoe dept employee ( Justin I believe) arranging the shoes next to us and asked him if they have my size. He was extremely impatient and flipped on his phone to look up the sizes and told me they didn't have any. Then I asked him the next size up and he got even more rude and said "so what size do you want?" Then took out his phone, flipped his phone a couple times and said "we don't have it" and turned away. No apology, no followup. Not sure what we did to deserve this treatment since later when an older white couple approached him he was a completely different person and went out of his way to give them advice and kept asking them what kind of trip they're planning etc. Seems pretty prejudiced to me. They really need to train this guy on proper customer service. Two stars since we ended up getting help from two other employees (long curtly haired guy and blonde girl) that were absolute delights. read more

Always a great experience at REI. I was just telling my friend who helped pick up my bike that everyone is always so helpful AND pleasant. I can't say I've had that experience as most places. I purchase their Co-op bike because there simply are no bikes out there but REI had it. It's a really nice bike and under $600. I'll circle back to the review once it's broken in. read more

I went to your REI store in Manhattan Beach, CA last Thursday Feb 16, 2023 to get this Yakima 135 base part and paid it. However, cashier told me that 135 part will be sent to shop for installation. REI's employee Dave or David told me to get base 175 from Yakima's website since was the only part missing to install a rack on my car. I even spoke to Indra Icia, manager at that time around 1:30 PM and thank her for her service. At the same time, we scheduled installation appointment for tomorrow Thursday Feb 23, 2023 at 1 PM. I just got a call at 8:50 PM on Feb 22, 2023 mentioning me that store that do not have base part 135 when I got it from your store. Employee who call me mentioned it that store needs to postpone installation for next Sunday Feb 26. However, I asked your employee to direct my call to a manager on call. Shena who refuse to provide me with her last name contradicted herself and told me that part may get to store next week on Tuesday and they will call me back to schedule a new installation appointment. What a terrible customer service just hours before installation. I went to your store yesterday Tuesday Feb 21 to get cross bars and make sure everything was fine for this appointment. No Means No! My spouse and I have shopped at REI brick and mortars only four times-- twice years ago, and twice last month, December. The salesperson who helped us at another REI a few weeks ago told us about the membership program, which we declined. The cashier mentioned it again, and we let her know we already declined it. The matter was dropped. However, last Friday at the Manhattan Beach store, HANK (the name on his tag), the cashier who rung up our purchase, kept pressuring us to get a membership. We repeatedly told him no, but he wouldn't stop, until I got upset. After spending a long day at UCLA medical center, we stopped in on our way home to check out the sneakers on sale. We'd enjoyed our experience until we had to stand up to Hank. We won't be shopping at this location again. read more

They have the used gear right there, a huge selection at the main store, the staff go above and beyond to help you. When in doubt... go to REI (instead of Target) when in need of camping (or any outdoor activity) supplies. I haven't walked into an REI since I was in high school and I had forgotten how amazing it was inside. There are so many products thoughtfully merchandised throughout the store making shopping easy and accessible. I literally only needed plastic tent stakes but was so intrigued that ended up scoping out the majority of the 1st floor (I didn't want to get lost upstairs in the apparel section). If I were to ever intensely go on a hike, there are some really cool backpacks I eyed. You're able to touch and feel products like which sleeping bag would work best or which lantern to go with based on the samples they had out on the floor. The employees on the floor were SUPER friendly and extremely helpful :) read more

I was asked to leave because they don't allow emotional support animals. They don't recognize emotional support animals as service animals. I was asked very personal questions about what "service" my dog provides and the woman (maybe a supervisor or manager, she didn't have a green vest on), responded coldly that I wasn't allowed in the store with my dog when I answered her (which legally I didn't have to tell her, but I mistook her for someone who has a heart). She was actually pretty mean about it. I left without causing a scene, but the whole experience was really triggering for my trauma. This REI is the only location that took issue with me having my dog with me, this location is THE MOST DOG UNFRIENDLY location. We will be supporting other friendlier REI locations. read more

What can this city girl say? I LOVE REI. The sales here are fantastic deals. Came in to purchase yet another tent. We already own a 4-person tent which realistically fits 2 adults semi-comfortably and a very large tent that can fit up to 8, so we needed something in between and one we can actually stand up in and not be forced to crouch in. A friend of ours is 6'8" and recommended the Kingdom 4. We can actually stand up to change clothes in the tent instead of lying down to change which is really an annoyance. The struggle is real. Not being a nature girl, this appeals to my common sense, and major plus, it was on sale! Regularly close to $400, REI had it on sale for $250. Plus with my REI membership and spending over $100, I received another $20 off coupon which in essence made my membership free. Nice! The tent is carried like a backpack rather than a duffle bag, and you don't need to know origami in order to repack this tent! It's very forgiving. How many times have I tried to squeeze contents back into a bag and it looks like it's going to bust open? The people who work here are so helpful. Every person greeted us and asked if we had any questions. One looked up a pair of shoes we were interested in and another recommended the right ground cover for our tent. So the family that camps (or glamps) together stays together! REI fan for life. read more

Went to pick up a $4000 rooftop tent on Thursday. I did not have the proper equipment to mount it to my rack so the extremely helpful guy at the front said "no problem, come back tomorrow morning when we open and we will help you install it because we won't be busy." I show up this morning and get super unhelpful manager guy who says they can't touch anything or take it out of the box because of liability. I could tell he had no idea about the product or how easy it would have been to unbox and help me out. Read a manual! Instead of dealing with excuses for lack of knowledge, I took it home and mounted it myself. It took me a couple hours on my own, but at least unhelpful manger guy incurred no liability. Thank goodness. We can all sleep at night because REI did not open a box. At least the return policy is good. read more
