Loved this two story REI in Manhattan Beach. The stairs up to the second level are in the middle of an opening that lets you easily see where everything is located in there store and that also shows off some of the water craft. Love that the shoes are on floating single shoe display shelves so there's no confusion where each shoe should be, what its price is, etc. Super feet samples are self serve which is convenient and time saving. Try on socks are in small floor baskets under the shoes which helps keep the area clutter free. Also love that the yoga mats are right in with the yoga clothing. Small but thoughtful: feminine products are provided in the restroom so you don't have to stop shopping if your time of the month comes ahead of schedule which can definitely happen if you're athletic! This place is a campers paradise or an adventurer's heaven! There is so much to see and buy. They have everything you need for that camping trip or that backpacking trip. There is so much to choose from. The guy who helped us out had a lot of great advice and gave us comparisons of the tents to make sure we buy a tent we can use for awhile and which will come in handy for the future. I am so sad that I forgot his name because I would really love to mention him since he had great communication skills and his customer service was on point. All I can say is he grew up in Inglewood and then moved up north before coming back to the South Bay. He was great and we hope to see him during our next trip to REI! read more

My fiancé and I go to REIs for fun so when I found out that there was a store that was entirely full of used gear, we had to make the 50-min trek there! There are actually 2 stores - one traditional REI store with everything new with tags and to the right of the Old Navy is another REI entirely full of used gear. Instead of doing the traditional garage sales pre-COVID (where each individual store would set up used gear in the parking lot every few months), used/defective gear is now sent over to the Manhattan Beach store. Although it's a long drive for me, I still prefer it since all of the used gear is now in one location and not spread out over the different stores! The used gear were neatly organized and everything was easy to find. I would come back here for larger purchases (think tents, backpacks, paddle boards). I bought a 40oz Hydroflask for $23 - a steal!! There were plenty to choose from that had minor cosmetic flaws so if you're in the market for them I would look here first. Everything is final sale so be extra sure when you decide to purchase! FYI - the used gear is available for anyone to browse through (no one asked for my membership when going in the store) but in order to purchase anything you need to be an REI member! read more

Doesn't that just make you want to get outside and do something? But before you go, you need to gear up. And that brings you back to the opening statement. See how that works? Perfect location in a busy area. They have the corner spot so getting in and out is a breeze (I mean parking). The staff here is knowledgable and helpful. They are fully stocked and carry the best brands for your camping, hiking, climbing, cycling, fitness, running, paddling, and snow sport needs. If you don't see what you're looking for, ask. When I found out I was going to Peru and hike the Incan trail to Machu Picchu, I knew I was in trouble because I had to stock up on hiking gear. My girlfriends that I was going with already had everything since they're avid hikers, divers, snorklers, snow-boarders, etc. etc (bitches, lol). Then comes lil ol me with only one pair of tennis shoes to my name. Those girls were no joke and wrote up a full page of items I needed to get. Unfortunately I couldn't rely on Amazon since I actually needed to see & try on the items that I'm getting. AND as an avid procrastinator, I only had one week to fulfill my list (mind you, I knew about Peru a year ahead)...ooops, my bad! I had to divide & conquer the list fast and I was on a mission! I went to the same store 4 times during that week. First off, I was quite thrown off by the prices and it was a gentle reminder of the last time I stepped into REI 6 years ago. But then I had to get my priorities straight cause I'd spend a lot more money on shoes & purses. It was IMPERATIVE that I get good gear cause I was not gonna get hurt or get stranded in the middle of the Incan trail cause I had cheap hiking boots! The customer service has got to be one of the best I've ever experienced. My shout outs go to Pete for helping me choose my Solomons Hiking Boots and to Isela for my camelback day-pack. I knew nothing going in 4 days prior but came out with a wealth of knowledge. I probably spent close to $1000 and I really did buy the basic necessities which included hiking boots, camelback, sleeping bag liner, socks & gloves, a poncho, headlamp, electrolyte powders & protein bars, convertible hiking pants and UV shirts. I came back from Peru in one piece and I had to say I pretty much used everything to the fullest! Those hiking boots saved my butt on so many occasions! I am an REI member now.....and they have excellent return policy good for a lifetime. I ended up returning the headlamp and a sleeping bag liner but kept everything else. I guess I'll just have to hike more often now that I'm all geared up! read more

I have to update to 5-stars after my most recent experience at this store. I had a pair of nice winter boots that suddenly just cracked while I was out in Grand Canyon. I figured I have nothing to lose to bring it to REI and see what they can do, not expecting anything. Do get the REI membership! The store manager looked up my member purchase history and although the store guarantee is only 1-year, he gave me a store credit for the boots! Unlike other REI stores this one does not permit even small well behaved dogs being carried enter the store. The Santa Monica store welcome them and even provide water bowls. The staff at front door here have a snotty attitude. I only write this review so people will leave their pets at home or change their plans and shop where pets are welcome. read more

I was really excited that this location opened up the space next door for the Garage Sale items. In the past I was bummed that I couldn't make the end of the month garage sale events. Luckily this store is open daily! The staff are just as helpful here as they are in the REI store. Best to come here first before heading over to REI just in case you find what you're looking for at a cheaper price. The staff mentioned that they are always getting new inventory, so best to check often if you can. Now heading to REI, there's plenty of space to stay socially distanced. Helpful staff are stationed throughout if you have questions. There's usually a line for both stores but it goes by fast. read more

Wow! All your outdoor recreational equipments and accessories in a huge 2 level shop! Anything you can think of from Snowboarding to camping to biking, hiking, fishing.. etc! Prices can be a little bit on the high side compare to Big 5 and other sporting goods store, but quality is defiantly better and sometimes you can find great bargains on the sale and clearance racks! Very dissatisfied. Probably at my own fault but bought a tent from garage sale( aurora 2 Person Nemo ). I knew what I wanted and didn't really have time to check it out all the contents of the tent . Plus I was already told that each tent has it poles so I don't worry one bit . Guess what no poles for the tent inside the 180$ I just spent :( . took it home a week later went to set it up before my camp trip so I knew what is was doing and nothing can't take it back went to ask again the associates there confirmed they don't sell tents without poles , lies . Way better than the Huntington Beach location. Everytime I shop here the staff go above and beyond. Also, never an issue with returning items. We live in difficult and unprecedented times, and it's brought out the best and worst in everyone. But some people never change, and REI is still its awesome self. They still have great service, and ordering for pick-up has never been so easy. We pulled up to the parking spot designated for pick-up so there was no getting out of the car or walking. A masked employee came out just to tell us that she had a few things to take care of but would be right with us, which was not necessary considering we literally waited less than 15 minutes. They loaded the item into the trunk and sent us on our way in record time. Thanks, REI. A lot has changed these days, but it's good to know that some of the good things stay good! read more

I purchased a pair of lightly used of Altra running shoes on May 2nd at the used/co op REI in Mahattan Beach. They looked like new. My reasons for purchasing used shoes from the co op location was not to save money (they were $93.00 used) but to do my part with reusing, recycling etc. The tag said they had been inspected and had no damage. These are meant to be serious and durable trail running shoes and I read reviews to see what people had to say and they were good reviews. I put them on to walk my dog around the block (concrete and grass in a local park) and the rubber outer sole on the heel is falling off. I acknowledge that at this particular store items are labeled with the phrase "all sales are final" but under the circumstances I would have thought that they would have the courtesy to at the very least offer a store credit so that I can purchase foot wear that isn't falling apart. I'm certain that REI can afford to work with customers under certain situations and prioritize customer service over corporate greed. Sadly this is not the case. It did not help that the person who was assisting me over the phone was talking to someone else at the same time and felt it was ok to tell me " I'm listening" while clearly not listening at all. If REI is comfortable and confident selling products ( new or used ) that are obviously defective without any accountability I'll be sure to support other businesses that are more responsible. If they don't want to provide customer service, they shouldn't sell defective equipment. It's that simple. In the event that I'm contacted and receive better service I'll be happy to share, but for now I can only recommend not doing business with REI as they have demonstrated that they could care less about their customers. R.E.I. used to be a great store. I bought a pair of hiking shoes here about 3 years ago. It was THEIR brand and I hardly used the shoes. Went hiking maybe 3 or 4 times . This was only just walking in the woods on a dirt paved trail. Went to wear the shoes today and the soles separated from the shoes.Went to the store that I bought them from today and spoke and showed the shoes to to manger, Sarah. She told me that this is common for the shoe to fall apart like mine, if not used much. I said this is your brand ,REI and don't you back your own brand ??? Surprisingly, she told me ,We are not responsible for this .This happens alot!!! I told her that I hardly used these expensive shoes and her response was that's normal. I was expecting at least a partial refund or credit . ITS THERE BRAND!! PLEASE DONT SHOP HERE. THEY don't even back there own products. Sarah didn't even care that I spent over $150.00 on their own products. PLEASE DONT SHOP HERE FOR HIKING SHOES. I have been going to Rei for 35 plus years. Never have I had a bad experience until today. Indra- the store manager took one look at my defective ski pants that ripped during 2 days of skiing and said "this is ordinary wear and tear, and you can't return it". Wow! I have been skiing for 40 years, I have a ski bib that never ripped in 30 years. A pair of pants that didn't rip in 10 years, but rip curl pants rip in 2 days?? Indra was not sympathetic, made no attempt to make me feel better about a loss of $150...she did suggest I go next door to the resale store and see if they would take them off my hands for a huge loss(so helpful). I came in looking for climbing shoes in a size 15 (buying shoes has always been hard for me) and although they didn't have my size, the two gentlemen that helped me gave me some tips and where I can find shoes in my size. Initially I was going to the Santa Monica REI but then I found this Manhattan Beach location when I went to one of their free REI Outdoor School Classes on Yosemite National Park and realized this location is a lot closer for me (with less traffic and easier parking, too!). REI is one of the biggest consumer co-operatives (co-op) in the nation. With that being said, you can get a lifetime membership for $20 which is great if you're interested in their paid classes, getting a 10% dividend every year on your purchases, and various coupons throughout the year. I am confident my membership will pay for itself and I just recently got it. Oh and you also get access to the "REI Garage Sales" which is basically a huge clearance event! So in addition to knowledgeable employees and all of the outdoor gear you could ever want or need, they also offer classes which can be found on the REI website (rei.com) ranging from outdoor yoga to paddle boarding to learning how to ride a bike to wilderness skills to kayaking local rivers to informational workshops on various national parks. Some of the classes are free while others require a nominal fee. Members receive a discount though! This specific location is great because of the vast parking lot and the size of the store, it's huge! They sell everything from tents to bikes to sleeping bags to clothes to freeze dried food to maps... If it's an outdoors item needed for camping, hiking, etc. they probably have it. And even though we're in Southern California, they had a great selection of skis, snowboards, and all of the equipment that comes with winter sports. One of my favorite aspects about REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) is that the CEO seems fabulous in that he gives employees off on Black Friday - the biggest day in retail - to "Opt Outside" aka get outdoors. Yes, it's marketing brilliance but still, to practice what you preach is awesome. They're starting quite the movement and partnering with some businesses and organizations like Subaru and the National Parks Foundation to spread the awareness of getting outside rather than waiting in line and killing each other trying to get a new TV on Black Friday... Ugh! And, the previous CEO of REI is actually the Secretary of the Interior which is pretty neat. read more
