Initially I was going to the Santa Monica REI but then I found this Manhattan Beach location when I went to one of their free REI Outdoor School Classes on Yosemite National Park and realized this location is a lot closer for me (with less traffic and easier parking, too!). REI is one of the biggest consumer co-operatives (co-op) in the nation. With that being said, you can get a lifetime membership for $20 which is great if you're interested in their paid classes, getting a 10% dividend every year on your purchases, and various coupons throughout the year. I am confident my membership will pay for itself and I just recently got it. Oh and you also get access to the "REI Garage Sales" which is basically a huge clearance event! So in addition to knowledgeable employees and all of the outdoor gear you could ever want or need, they also offer classes which can be found on the REI website (rei.com) ranging from outdoor yoga to paddle boarding to learning how to ride a bike to wilderness skills to kayaking local rivers to informational workshops on various national parks. Some of the classes are free while others require a nominal fee. Members receive a discount though! This specific location is great because of the vast parking lot and the size of the store, it's huge! They sell everything from tents to bikes to sleeping bags to clothes to freeze dried food to maps... If it's an outdoors item needed for camping, hiking, etc. they probably have it. And even though we're in Southern California, they had a great selection of skis, snowboards, and all of the equipment that comes with winter sports. One of my favorite aspects about REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) is that the CEO seems fabulous in that he gives employees off on Black Friday - the biggest day in retail - to "Opt Outside" aka get outdoors. Yes, it's marketing brilliance but still, to practice what you preach is awesome. They're starting quite the movement and partnering with some businesses and organizations like Subaru and the National Parks Foundation to spread the awareness of getting outside rather than waiting in line and killing each other trying to get a new TV on Black Friday... Ugh! And, the previous CEO of REI is actually the Secretary of the Interior which is pretty neat. read more

My husband and I were looking for a bike for him and the bike manager was very patient with us the whole time. We had done our initial research on the bicycles and knew which bikes we wanted to try out. As suspected the bike we liked ran very large and we had to go with 2 sizes smaller than usual. We talked to the manager about another bike that we recently purchased at another store which the derrailer snapped into the wheel unexpectedly and the manager said it would be a manufacture's error where the bolt had broke. It's nice trying to buy bikes from someone who really knew the ins and outs of the bikes. We didn't end up purchasing from them but we hurried over to another REI store to pick up the right size bike. read more

This is the REI closest to me, and I just recently forked over the $20 to become a lifetime member. I have to admit that I normally go to the store to try on shoes or clothes and then just end up buying them from the online outlet, since you can get such a better deal. I do love that you can purchase stuff online and have it delivered to the store. You just go upstairs to the desk next to the shoe area and they bring your stuff right out to you. Kind of hard to find people to help you though, sometimes. The clothes selection, at least for women, isn't all that great. I come and scour through the sales racks upstairs once in a while, but even when they have their big sales, I can usually find it cheaper elsewhere or online. This REI is smaller than others, but it's sufficient enough. Parking is easy and I like the location because there's a Barnes & Noble and Trader Joe's in the same strip, and Costco is like 1/2 mile away. read more

Anything hiking related makes me super happy. REI is full of outdoor equipment to satisfy all needs. I love this REI in particular because of it's convenience and accessibility. There's so much to choose from in selection, it's hard to know where to begin. I usually like to peruse the camping section in the downstairs area for small items I can take hiking or for my emergency bag (aka The Bug Out bag!). I've bought a bear bell and water proof matches from here. They have a great selection of hydration gear. I want to own a Camelbak one day but for now I can't justify spending $100 on a hydration pack. They also have a ton of water bottles with and without filters, backpacks galore, tents, biking gear, and an awesome sleeping bag section (who knew there's so much to a bag you sleep in?). What I like most about REI aside from the selection, is their family selection. Almost everything is available for men, women, AND children. Then there's the upstairs section...oh yes! There's more!!! You can take the elevator upstairs or you can go up the stairs. Bathrooms are located on the second floor by the elevator. Their shoe selection is pretty great. I think that's one of my favorite sections. I love drooling over all the shoes from great brands like Brooks, Merril, Asics, and New Balance. There's a decent selection of hiking shoes along with trail runners and even casual shoes. Again, there's a equal selection for men, women and children. There's even a faux rock area to be able to test out shoes ! There's always one or two REI personnel ready to assist you in selecting shoes. The clothing area is drool worthy. Patagonia, Columbia, North Face, and Marmot jackets and sweaters are abundant. There's lots of clothing in those name brands as well as the REI brand. I don't fancy the clothing as much, it looks like regular clothing to me. I'm sure campers probably appreciate it more. Back to the first floor by the check out, there's a really fun kids section with toys and items all geared towards nature and the outdoors. My son loves checking out this section. I never leave without checking out the book and map section. There are so many great hiking trail books and topo maps. REI is a great place for any outdoor enthusiast, and even if you aren't one you just might become one after visiting! read more

First off, I must disclose that I used to work at this REI (part time) for about a year and a half, back around 2002.... BUT... I was a huge fan of the store way before I worked there. In fact, most of the people who work there are huge fans of the store - that's why they're so enthusiastic and knowledgeable and friendly. It's not because they get paid a lot (they don't), it's because they WANT the gear that they're selling... and employees get a significant discount! REI is technically a Co-Op. Meaning, you pay $15 for a lifetime membership, and you get a year-end "dividend" equal to approximately 10% of your purchases over the previous year. You don't have to be a member to shop there, but you'd be stupid to not get a membership - it's really a no brainer. Even if you don't think you'll spend more than $150 there over the course of your lifetime (you will) you should get the membership just so you can shop at the member's only sale (more on that later). Don't come here looking for "sporting goods" because you won't find any basketballs, baseball gloves, fishing poles, guns/rifles, etc... head over to Sportsmart or Big 5 for that stuff. REI is an outdoor adventure store. They sell a big variety of medium to high-end outdoor gear for camping, rock climbing, skiing and snowboarding, bicycling, hiking, kayaking, snow-shoeing, etc. There's an amazing variety of tents, backpacks, freeze-dried food, water bottles, maps, guidebooks, etc. They also sell clothes. This particular location is 2 stories, with most of the gear downstairs and clothes and shoes upstairs. They carry most of the high-end outdoor brands (Patagonia, North Face, etc) but also have their own "REI brand" line of products that is very high-quality and usually a bit cheaper. You can even test out those rock shoes on that 2-story climbing tower in the front of the store! Did I mention their return policy? It's the best in the business (along with Nordstroms) basically a lifetime satisfaction guarantee on everything they sell. Some people try to take advantage of this, but most of REI's customers are loyalists. And here's a little secret that they don't advertise: all that gear that gets returned or slightly damaged gets saved up and then "purged" a couple times a year at a special members-only sale (usually in the parking lot behind the store) where items get sold for anywhere from 50-80% off their original price. Some members camp out for hours! They don't promote or announce these "members-only" sales... it's strictly word of mouth - you have to ask them if one is coming up. They also have pretty good "normal" sales throughout the year - which they DO promote. Also, there's a service/repair shop in the store where you can get your bike tuned up, skis waxed, etc. Trust me, they know what they're doing in there. And REI's website is awesome... they even offer a "ship to store" option where you can pick something up at the store and not pay shipping. This REI location is where it's at! REI is a chain, so the products and prices are all pretty much the same wherever you go. The only difference between shops really comes down to parking, staff, location and size. This one has it all! The parking is really easy. It's located in a plaza with a few other stores like Trader Joes and Barnes & Noble, so you shouldn't have a problem snagging a spot. The place is really large! It's two stories and it even has a rock wall inside, which I've never seen at an REI! They have everything you could ever need: bikes, backpacks, snowboards, sleeping bags, camping gear, climbing gear. Really, everything you could want for your outdoor activities is here. The employees are very kind and helpful as well. I was recently in here for stakes and was browsing at a few other items when someone came up to me and asked if I was looking for anything, so he went and showed me where the stakes were! There were a few different kinds for different types of surfaces, so he showed me what each one was for. REI has a membership program that you can join for a one time fee of $20 and you get a 10% back on all your purchases for the year as well as access to their garage sale, which if you haven't heard of it is awesome. The garage sale is this huge sale they do a couple of times a year where they sell items at super deep discounts. They're usually items that were returned and lightly used, so you're definitely likely to get a good deal. If there's something you're looking for in particular, REI will probably have it. If you're the outdoorsy type, you'll even just love walking around this store. But be forewarned if you've never been to REI, the prices can be a little more expensive than usual. But it's top quality brands and products, so you'll definitely walk out with something that will last a long time. read more

This is the largest REI store I've been to: two stories, a rock climbing wall, plenty of registers, excellent online order pick-up, great employees, a service center, cool classes, etc. REI has always been my go to sports/snow sports store but I've noticed that all the other REI stores don't carry the same variety. I even went to one REI store (Arcadia) in the winter and they didn't have ski/snowboard gear! That is not the case at this location and it's much farther from the slopes! Tried to buy a caged item. Stood around looking for anyone to help, didn't find anyone on the floor for fifteen minutes. Finally decided to just ask the door greeter, she said she couldn't help but called someone to the floor who could. Waited another fifteen, nobody came. Walked outside, bought the item from their website and marked that I'd pick it up. I went back inside, told them what I did (and why), and they said that now I have to wait at least two hours for them to send an email that would ALLOW me to pick up what I purchased, mind you, I was staring right at it but the associate still shoo'd me away. I just became a member of the REI family this month. I haven't looked back since. I just finished a one in a lifetime trip to Buena Vista, Colorado for a weekend camping trip. The weather was much colder than expected. However, I was in good hands with the REI team. They reminded me to bring bug spray 30% DEET, wool socks, huge water canteen, some meal replacement options, lightweight breathable but warm pants that are water resistant and a head lamp. I even snagged a Marmot jacket on clearance. I would have been miserable without these items and certainly would have forgotten/wouldn't have know what to load up on without their help. I recently had the best shoe shopping customer service experience I have ever had at the REI Co-Op. I went there to buy a pair of hiking boots because the last ones I bought did not fit my feet well. I do not know how to pick out hiking boots and so was initially picking shoes to try based on their appearance. Stan came over and ended up spending at least 20 minutes with me to help me find a shoe that I really liked. He picked out shoes for me to try that I would have never considered, including the shoe I ended up choosing that fits really well. He was incredibly nice, knowledgeable about shoes, and stayed with me as long as it took for me to find shoes that worked. I am very thankful that Stan was working that day. He made my shoe shopping experience so enjoyable and much more successful. I never would have found the shoes I have and love without his help. Thank you so much Stan!! read more

Even this place is pricey i always like to come here and browse and think maybe one day i'll buy this and that and test it out in the real world. They do have some cool stuff too. bought an item last week, tried it out and realised I didn't like it anymore. I tried it out once and just didn't like it. I returned it within 72 hours, week within the 1 year leeway of returns , in REIs return policy. The employee at the desk, tall Caucasian woman with dark round glasses like on the despicable me movie, looked at the item like I abused it or trampled on it. Asked me if I used it then returned my money, but she seemed to take it personally, like she was butt hurt on my return! As a member I have up to a year to return anything I buy at REI if not satisfied. She looked at me with disapproval, then returned my money. I felt her disdain and attitude. She acted so douchie. I got my money and returned with 2 items and was hoping not to go back to her and her dirty looks. I got lucky when an Asian gal with silver highlight in her hair, so nice and cordial, helped me. I like her, friendly, non judgemental and with a great smile too. ( I think I'm in love with this fair maiden!) I like the store, just avoid rude people. IT'S ABSOLUTELY FKN FUNNY, EVERY WORD OUT OF THEIR MOUTHS IS TRYNG FOR THEM TO HAVE YOU SIGN UP FOR MEMBERSHIP , CORPORATE MAKES THE EMPLOYEES WHORES OF GREED. The customer service is still terrible. :( Part of me wants to play the race card, but Ill stick to the facts instead. This review has a bit of a twist. I came back to to buy my brother in law a birthday gift (he's outdoorsy ya know.), and after making eye contact with a representative, she chose to do an about face and walk somewhere else. "Fine. Ill help myself" was the the only option left for me, so I got my item and headed for the cash register. There was one guy in front of me (not very busy), and when it was his turn to go up the register he wasn't completely paying attention. So the kid behind the register...instead of speaking a little louder...he whistles at him like he was F@#king dog! This kinda got me fired up because this REI comes highly reviewed. I was in disbelief. How disappointing that this RIE would hire people who have no social skills. So my turn comes and I get kid next to this whistling jerk. Man what a difference. He was not only polite, but apologized for no one being able to help me. he was so good in fact, that he actually convinced me to sign up for their membership card. Its $20 a year, and honestly I dont know what the Hell its good for? But he was so cool with me, that he was able to get a little more money out of me. THATS SERVICE! THAS HOW ITS DONE! Blah Blah Blah...great selection of out door items. Horrible customer service. But if you must go, be sure to get exactly what you want. Chances are the attendants are too busy making weekend plans. Every time I go into REI, I ask myself why Don't I shop here more often.....well it's probably because I'm the complete opposite of an outdoorsy person. However, one of my favorite brands is The North Face and they always have a great selection of their goods and when their clothing goes on clearance, they have amazing deals. On this particular visit, I was on a mission for a backpack for my upcoming trip. My goal is to have just one carry-on backpack. Something big enough to carry all my gear, and by gear I mean like five pair of shorts, five t-shirts, a few tanks, unmentionables, maybe a dress or two, a pair of tennis shoes, a few pair of yoga pants and travel size toiletries. Yes, I am going to make this happen! I was directed to the very back corner of the store where they had a ton of packs in varying sizes which all served very specific purposes. I went straight for the day pack section and was in The North Face heaven. I seriously tried on like ten bags and walked down the aisles like it was Fashion Week. I was approached by at least four more employees offering assistance, but I was in a zone and on a mission! One guy, George, was really trying to sell me on a lifetime membership for their rewards program thing and was talking about all the cool stuff they sell as well as their services and classes....silly me asked him if they had Quad/dirt bike gear. That's when he looked at me kinda funny and tried to explain nicely that their goods do not need to be plugged in because they are "Recreational Equipment Incorporated hence REI'! Anyway, winner winner chicken dinner, I managed to find "the one". It's called something like the daypack 40. To my husband that's reading my review right now, sorry I had to buy the most expensive one but I love it and will use it again, promise! Better yet, it's a unisex bag so we both can enjoy it!! With my new bag on my back, I perused the second floor to see if I could find any good clearance deals. They had some nice clearance coats but they weren't marked down enough for me to pull the trigger. One splurge a day...I'm making that my new mantra. I went to go pay for my purchase and another super friendly and overly happy person helped my and sold me on the membership. I know, I'm a sucker. But, the good news, 10% dividends back every year and it's $20 for a lifetime membership! I'll report back on how the bag holds up. But, another benefit with REI is that they have a one year guarantee, full refund!! It's like the sporting equipment equivalent to Costco! Love this place. With the closing of a local sports store chain, the a abiliity to go to a store and try on gear for hiking, climbing, biking, etc. is getting literally getting in short supply. REI has been a long time favorite "toy" store for me. I'm honestly just thankful for an REI in the South Bay. This particular store is a decent one. I can usually find what I'm looking for. The reason it's 4 stars and not five is that it isn't as big as some so I do find myself either having to go online or wait for stock to come in. I find the people working on the floor are usually helpful, perhaps not as knowledgeable as when REI was not quite as big (and that may also be that when I used to shop in Colorado more people just do those outdoor sports more often and in all conditions) but the staff is always friendly and try to be helpful. Become a member. It's totally worth it and I always end up getting a dividend, year after year. And then go out and play! read more

I love REI. I'm an REI fan girl because every REI I've laid foot through the door has been a positive experience and this is attributed to the superior customer service. I believe that outdoorsy people and people who own dogs are generally the nicest people you'll ever encounter. You'll never go hiking and encounter a mean person who won't help a lost soul out, and it's the same with REI staff when they help out patrons. While I haven't purchased anything from this particular location, the staff are so friendly! The store is also kept neat and everything is in its place. I stood outside REI with my puppy while waiting for my friends to finish shopping. I kid you not, about 5 total staff members came out to keep me company and start dialogue (let's be real, they came out to pet my puppy).The staff are warm and super receptive to questions. Because of this, I'm giving this location 5 starts for the positive consumer experience for both my puppy and myself. read more

My boyfriend and I came here to purchase two $300 helmets. Their stock was awful the few helmets they had in stock the boxes were ripped open and the wrapping on the floor. We tried multiple times to wave down an employee for help. We even waved down one employee who saw us and then proceeded to walk towards us but then another customer came up and the employee turned to help them for atleast 10 minutes. That's when we realized this business just didn't want our $600 and we left. We went to the local Store ET surfboards in hermosa beach across from Trader Joe's. I arrived at REI to get my daughter, a labor and delivery nurse BTW, a new pair of hiking boots. As I entered the store I was asked if I wanted a mask...."No...thank you....we are all triple vaccinated and per LA County guidelines allowed in the store". We walked in and shopped for 20 min and my daughter found 3 pairs of boots she wanted to buy. I asked the salesman if he could get them and he rudely said "I refuse to wait on you because you don't have masks" I explained that the masks are no longer required for fully vaccinated people and he said. "We're a private company...we can do what we want and we don't want to serve you". Hmmm....sounds like discrimination to me. Of course these are the same type of "Karens" all over the west side at Whole Foods, TJ's Lazy Acres who see themselves as morally superior to everyone else. Awesome selection, really nice people, knowledgeable, and my absolute favorite thing is that they have an REI outlet online (love shopping online) where you can find SUPER deals on last season items-- my husband bought all of his North Face ski gear (amazing stuff) for cheap just because it's not the season colors anymore or whatever. True outdoors-people don't care if the color for 2007 is green... give us the goods! Adding to my favorite thing (the REI Outlet online)... you can get the items shipped to the nearest REI store and there is no charge for shipping! It's such a score for those folks that live local to one of these stores. They email you when it arrives. Revision 5/11/09: I totally recommend becoming a member too. Such great perks come your way. You never lose your membership (the lady on the phone told me... after a year of no activity, they stop sending catalogs, but you're still a lifer. You get great coupons, insider details, and best of all, an end of the year dividend check for a percentage of what you purchased. I am a fan of REI no matter where I am. I always find something. I have never been to this location and it's alot smaller than the one in Northridge. VERY friendly staff. We were greeted as soon as we walked through those doors. I really just stopped by to use the ladies room and it never fails. I ended up buying a pair of Donna Deco Sanuks that were on sale for about $38; regular price $55. Not too shabby! At every REI that I have ever been too are very knowledgeable. Everyone knows their stuff. Price point is up there but you are getting quality and I do love their return policy. They are always running special events at a discount price for members and they have AWESOME once a year sales. I just love REI! read more

I bought a Patagonia jacket from this REI and went in to return/exchange it a few weeks later. I love the jacket but I noticed somehow a feather from the inner material started poking me. The checkers told me that REI came out with recycled material on that jacket so it's basically a whole new line even though it's the same jacket. She added that I should go through Patagonia because she couldn't help me I found out later that returns are based on how the employees are feeling. read more

So they took over an empty storefront in the same location and converted it to a running REI garage sale. It's got a pretty decent selection here I ended up picking up a few hydro flask bottles that were easily half price there were some slight cosmetic defaults but nothing major. If you plan on trying shoes on make sure to bring your own personal socks. What stood out for me was that there was a nice selection of travel luggage I did get my ski bag here a while back and it's still solid. read more

I hate doing this to an REI store, but this is the second bad experience I've had at this specific location. I didn't leave a review for the first time, but I did call in about it. They had no system to know who was first and waiting the longest for assistance, and they completely took the word of an old white man who cut the line, instead of believing a young minority person. Since then they have pagers, and I'm hoping that this new review will enact them to fail forward again and improve moving forward and put customer at the center at this location. We were walking in, when Shana, literally blocked our path so we couldn't move forward, and told my friend that she couldn't bring her furry daughter in, we asked why and said her furry daughter isn't ADA compliant. I was bewildered and asked what she means, because we normally frequent the Arcadia location, and not once has they ever done this. She said all "dogs need to be service animals and therapy and emotional support dogs aren't included" my friend came all the way from Ukraine, and her "animal" is the only family member that was able to escape the war with her. How would we even be able to get her daughter the right size hiking boots or fit her for clothing? Their policy here doesn't fit the company's "a path less traveled" mantra. It's unfortunate Shana and this REI still sees furry sons and daughters as "property" that should be chained up outside or left inside a car. read more

I came in here to get my brand new snowboard waxed and also needed advice on what kind of snow boots and bindings to get. After a short wait, Paul came out and greeted me. I can't say enough what a huge help he was. He was not only super nice about my gazillion questions but also super knowledgeable, sizing my feet and giving me clear, straight forward, no bull crap answers. Even when he realized the exact boots I was looking to buy were not in stock at this particular store - he found me the nearest one that sold then and after still didn't seem to rush me in any way. Excellent Customer Service is extremely important - especially at a brand like REI, and everyone there really hit the nail on the head tonight. Even the door greeter was outrageously friendly. Final Verdict: Any time I need new sports gear I'd be happy to purchase from this location for sure. read more
