Renu Nakorn is known for their Northern Thailand dishes such as Issan Sausages and Khao Soi and it was the first home for Chef Saipin from Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas; however, over the course of time, management has changed hands at Nakorn. Central Thai dishes like Papaya Salad, Moo Ping, and Pad See Ew come in generous portions; however, I wouldn't say that Renu Nakorn serves the best versions of those dishes. I did like the Pad See Ew as the rice noodles have a really nice chew, the chinese broccoli offered nice freshness and crunch, and it came with good bits of meat and egg. Moo ping is a really tasty BBQ pork and the paired sauce is addictive; however, I would have loved more prominent grill/char flavor. Papaya Salad was missing the dried shrimps that give umami/savory/salty flavors that balance the dish. Don't miss the opportunity to get dishes from their "Northern Thai" menu as it's what they're really known for. Issan sausages are really nice as they offer uniquely savory, herby flavors. If you haven't had Khao Soi, the noodles in the yellow coconut curry are so delicious and the crispy noodles on top offer really nice textural contrast. read more

Before I discovered Thai Town, Thai Original BBQ in Cerritos and Renu Nakorn were my introductions to Thai cuisine. The former's food has somehow adapted to local tastes, while Renu Nakorn didn't (at that time). Has Renu Nakorn progressed since then? The last time I ate here was 25 years ago -- times were a lot simpler then, including the main road it's situated on. Present-day Rosecrans is now ribboned in freeway on-and-off ramps, backing Renu Nakorn into a smallish strip mall that is grungy, with limited parking. For starters, I was floored by how expansive its menu has become -- it now has the heft of a three-ring binder! Before, the menu was a laminated one-pager printed on both sides. We ordered familiar staples: Pad See Ew, Larb Salad, and Deep-Fried Trout. For the prices, I was gobsmacked at the morsel-sized portions of each dish! How did each taste compared to what I remember from 25 years ago? The Pad See Ew -- garlicky and peppery. There's a comforting crunch from the Chinese broccoli, but none of the smoky, caramelized char from a hot wok. The flat noodles were slippery from a sauce, which I found cloyingly sweet. The larb salad did not have the mint flavor and spicy punchiness I was looking for -- its flavors were muted. The deep-fried trout was at least acceptable -- I will forgive it for not being deboned. It was crisp and moist, but its tiny size relative to its "market price" of $28 made it difficult to enjoy. I glanced at other tables -- and most were ordering Fried Rice, and multiple orders at that. Has the hefty menu discouraged diners from venturing beyond the more familiar Thai offerings? Or was it simply the best value on the menu? Three basic dishes, portioned as appetizers, that didn't live up to fond memories, cost us $80 with just water. That warrants one star. I'd like to think that I have progressed in terms of understanding what "good" tastes like in Thai cuisine over the course of 25 years -- it seems to me that Renu Nakorn did not. read more

The server who took our order was patient and able to explain the menu well. They were able to accommodate my friends' dietary restrictions and I thought it was impressive that they were able to tell us which sauces/ingredients were in the different dishes. I ordered the Thai bbq pork which was flavorful and cooked well, and the portion size was decent too. Rice was an extra add-on which I think is absolutely necessary, so it would have been nice if the dish came with it. We've been coming here for many years. We've celebrated birthdays and other events. When Chris, the waiter (manager?) moved to Thailand, things truly went down hill. The prices are outrageously expensive. One of the last times we were there, we would always order the number "52" with the thin beef slices and marinated cabbage. This time the waitress came out with something totally different and tried to tell us that was what we ordered. Chris was always right on top of things and letting us sample new dishes. Very nice place. Staff were very polite. My husband placed the order for dinner on a Wednesday night and I went to pick it up. They stated it would be ready in about 20 minutes and they had it packed and ready to go by the time I arrive about 45 minutes prior to closing. There were two other families eating when I had arrived not talking and enjoying their food (very good sign in my option). I walked straight up the cashier and they rang me up. My food was waiting on the first table right in front of the cash register. The lady unpacked it so I could see each item that we had ordered and then put it right back in the box. We ordered pan seared dumplings (I requested them steamed instead of pan fried), 1 order of chicken wontons, 1 order of pad see ew (steak and shrimp combo), 1 order of shrimp fried rice and one order of pork pad Thai. My husband and I enjoyed every item that we ordered. I have nothing negative to say about the food except the chicken wontons first off. I thought they were cream cheese wontons, but that was my bad for not reading the menu correctly, but the amount of chicken inside of them was so little it felt like I was just eating a wonton lol other than that everything else was great! All of our food came out extremely fast! The pad Thai was so flavorful, saucy, and savory, the raw bean sprouts gave the dish a nice crunch and freshness. The Thai iced coffee was ok, it didn't have much of a coffee flavor at all. It tasted like watered down condensed milk IMO. (Don't think I'd get it again) Service was great, we waited for a couple people to arrive and placed their orders for them prior to them coming. They (the restaurant) kept their meals warm for them awaiting their arrival. There is an ample amount of seating, several booths as well as tables throughout the restaurant. I ordered the lunch special for $15.99 and chose the ginger chicken. Unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience. The meal started with what was supposed to be a salad, but it was literally three tiny leaves completely drenched in dressing. It felt careless and unappetizing. The ginger chicken itself was thinly sliced, very small portions, and sitting in what looked like almost half an inch of sauce. I actually had to drain the sauce off just to make it edible. The chicken tasted overwhelmingly salty -- like it had been dumped into a bowl of salt. Shortly after eating, I ended up with a headache. This place got it right and complemented it with fried rice & 3 fried dumplings w/duck sauce. I ordered the Red Curry (#125) with chicken and asked for extra spicy. The thin strips of chicken were paired with slices of bell peppers and had a hint of mint as well. It was simmering in a coconut milk broth and was decently spicy without compromising flavor. My wife ordered the Kai Koowah (#106) and hers was equally as delicious. I sampled hers and the beef was tender, delicious and the thick cut noodles were fantastic. Mi Ama ordered the pineapple fried rice with chicken and shrimp. Hers was also very tasty and came as a large enough portion to share with the family. We highly recommend this place if you are craving some great Thai Food! Renu Nakorn is a renowned thai restaurant in the Los Angeles area. You may not assume this based on its location tucked away in a strip mall, but this place never disappoints. The servers take time to remember regulars by name and what they like to eat. As a vegan, many thai restaurants are unable to adapt dishes to my diet, but they take time to explain which dishes they can make and are transparent about the ingredients. Every meal has been consistently excellent and there is never a lapse of quality or freshness. So far I've had, Pad Thai, Papaya Salad, Pad See Ew, Tom Kha Kai, Spring Rolls and a Thai Tea that the sever makes with lemon which tastes very fresh. Come here to sit comfortably in a nice booth and enjoy great thai food, they can likely accommodate to your needs. read more
