This is absolutely one of my favorite restaurants of all time. I've been coming since I was a little girl. The staff is very attentive. The food is super yummy for a steal of a price. I's astonished at the number of negative comments based on ignorance of authentic Japanese cuisine and the mistaken belief that the many Japanese restaurants that have been Americanized both in decor and food are "authenic." Sushi is a Japanese food, but it not the only Japanese food and a restaurant that does not serve it is not any less authentically Japanese than an "American" restaurant that does not serve hamburgers or hot dogs. One of the comments made out of ignorance and arrogance is that somehow this restaurant s really owned by Chinese masquerading as running a Japanese restaurant. The owner and the employees are all authentic Japanese, most born there, and who speak Japanese, not Chinese. The owner has a picture of herself at a much younger age on the west wall (nearest the parking lot) in her wedding Kimono. Chinese do not wear Kimonos as their native dress. As to having had "authentic" Japanese food , I lived in Japan for over two years, ate at "authentic" Japanese restaurants and ate in authentic Japanese homes in which meals were served by authentic, native born Japanese. This is authentic Japanese food served here as verified by someone who has lived there and eaten there, and not just as tourist being ushered into restaurants designed to appeal to Americans. Actually, the main reason I eat there is that is where my parents go. I usually won't drive to Whittier to eat anywhere just to eat there. They have been going there since it opened. My parents lived in Japan for 6 years, and up until about 5 years ago when infirmity affected my 93 y/o Dad's ability to travel, he spent three weeks every year in Japan. He has eaten in many authentic Japanese restaurants, at Japanese homes, and even had a Japanese national student living with them who would cook authentic Japanese food. My Dad also enjoys talking Japanese to the owner whenever he comes in -- (at least once a week). It's not fancy, it's not decorated all Japanese-eee, but it is authentic decoration, down to the window frames on the outside and the curtains inside, and other limited decorations. Real Japanese decoration is about simplicity and sparseness. The menu is limited in breadth and course, but you can get an assortment of basic food that is very inexpensive. You get green tea, soup, a bowl of rice, a small lettuce salad, and your entree for less then many places charge for just a burger. And the rice is bottomless if you want more. Food is cooked fresh as it is ordered. It is simple, but tasty. Service is excellent and I have rarely waited more than 10 minutes for my food once ordered, even when they are busy. So you faux- Japanese cuisine experts can go to your plastic Japanese restaurants and eat your sushi believing that sushi is the only real Japanese food, and those of us who appreciate service, unpretentious and good food can enjoy ourselves here at Amachi's . Remember, Amachi does not bill itself as a "sushi" restaurant, only as a Japanese restaurant. So lighten up on the lack of sushi and be a little less of a know it all, because you ain't. read more

i'm sure this used to be a old diner. the chairs and tables look like it. the waitresses are nice but slow. amachi reminded me of japanese fast food except that sushi boy wins hands down. the food is okay. beef sukiyaki with rice chicken kushi, short ribs, and tempura w/miso soup, salad. first, miso soup and pickled cucumber arrived. the pickled cucumber was not marinated for a long time. they just sliced cucumber and threw some sauce/sesame on it. the miso soup was only filled up to half a bowl. it was not good with a little seaweed. the chicken kushi looked like chicken teriyaki. short ribs and salad were okay. they skimped on the bowl of rice which i didn't understand. only the tempura was actually good. the beef sukiyaki was more worth the order. once again, skimping on the rice. the prices are lower than most places but the tea was cheap. the beer came in a chilled plastic cup. who chills plastic cups?!?!? subpar food, skimping on rice, plastic cups for beer.. i guess it's a neighborhood favorite since people like the price which is the only explanation for the high ratings. read more

I went here to eat last weekend with my sister and friends and the food was not that good. I ordered pork teriyaki and the meat was too chewy. My jaws hurt while eating it. And the salad was just cheap iceberg lettuce and there was not enough dressing on it. I also ordered an iced green tea for $2.00, no refill! That is a ripoff since I can drink as much green tea as I want at home and even order it at the Cheesecake Factory for $3.25 with unlimited refills. The rice was ok, but that is hard to mess up on. Went to Amachi for my first time today. To my surprise they were having a re-grand opening! All you can eat Sushi and Tempura vegetables. With a choice of Chicken or beef teriyaki and white rice. Hidden Gem in Uptown Whittier. My sister and brother in law introduced us to the place. The menu is very limited. I like the fact that you can make reservations, this place tends to get very busy. On busy days the service is soooo slow. I feel like I have to hound them down for a extra bowl of rice. Sometimes the owner will come around asking how the food is and will start a little chit chat. I enjoy dining here -- especially having curry rice and sukiyaki. The combination plates are also very good and down-to-earth. Nothing fancy about this place -- just plain, simple, casual Japanese dining like the one's you would normally get in a family home in Japan. My mother and father used to go to Whittier college and this is where they would frequent when they had some extra cash. My father visited from the homeland for 2 weeks so I decided to take him down memory lane and visit this restaurant and the Whittier area in general. He says that everything was just as he remembered 30 years ago. Even the owner Kyoko, who still remembered him! She still bus the tables and serves food 30 years later and still remembers her customers from back then. If that is not called rapport and warmth, I don't know what is. On to the food, we ordered the chicken teriyaki and tempura combo and I have to admit, it was quite excellent for the price. Perfect if you want a nice affordable Japanese meal without burning a hole through your wallet. All the combos come with miso soup and salad so well worth the price. Overall: Amachi offers great food and great atmosphere at a good price. Customers there seem like locals who frequent this establishment and makes it a regular stop. Not only does Amachi offer amiable surroundings and food, but to people who are actually in the know, (like my father and mother), it offers a sense of nostalgia. read more

This is one of my favorite places for my pre-Swing Dancing dinners. This place provides good, old-fashioned Japanese comfort food. If you like Curry Rice, try the "Amachi Special"; it also comes with terriyaki chicken and salad. I also like their Tonkatsu. I almost always drink tea with my meals and the interesting thing about that is that the teapot they serve are pink plastic ones with fraternity/sorority (?) emblems. What I really liked about this place was their quick and friendly service. They make sure that I enjoy my dinner and don't hesitate to ask me if I want more white rice or tea. Local favorite restaurants have at least one feature and, here, it is the small wall of family photos (mostly of the locals and people who frequent this restaurant). This tells me how good of an establishment it is. Parking near the restaurant can sometimes get filled up around dinner time, but there's always the Public Parking structure across the street on Greenleaf Avenue. I would not recommend street parking on Greenleaf Avenue since you can only park your car there for a limited time, which takes time away from window shopping. read more

My favorite Japanese comfort food. My family always comes here for special occasions, it's a little hole in the wall with nothing special when it comes to the decor. Their menus are old photo books and are quite simple. I always start with the shumai, delicious little pork dumplings that are out of this world. For dinner we always share Family combination A for about $10 bucks each we get to enjoy pickled cucumbers and miso soup, and then a huge platter comes out with salad in the middle with the best ranch dressing ever, tempura (which my family always fights over the sweet potato and the shrimps), chicken and beef teriyaki. The meal ends with fresh pineapple and orange slices. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Not great, not terrible. I came in with a pretty large party (6 people). The food was pretty good. I got the teryaki salmon with tempura. It came with pickled cucumbers, miso soup and a salad. Food was cheap and not bad. I deducted 2 stars for the service and decoration. The place looks pretty run down and packed with stuff. There was stuff everywhere. I couldn't pull out my chair without bumping a changing screen. I was barely able to get out of the chair once I pulled it out. Really liked the chicken teriyaki and sashimi, but the beef teriyaki was a little tough and the shrimp tempura was disappointingly small. Portions are small, but the price you pay matches the amount of food you get. People with larger appetites will want to order an appetizer or extra orders of meat or sides.
