The food was ok. The prime rib was cut so thinly that it became tough , it was seasoned well so the taste was good. The sushi was mediocre, not what I expected . I paid 135.00. I really liked the omelette station the guy was organized and fast. He did a good job. I really enjoyed the pork siomai. They had a lot of pies and cakes. The lox would have been better if it was firmer. They were late in opening so the people waited and some of them and we were already very hungry. Including me. It was confusing. Fortunately the host was very nice and she tried to help the people. The coffee and drinks were given out late too. It took me asking the servers at least 3 times to get my orange juice. I think they really intended for good afternoon tea but they either have a few more things to figure out, or perhaps we came on a really off day. Me and my friend make a reservation for Saturday afternoon tea. When we showed up we were the only ones there. Later a group of 4 came in. It was really quiet which is nice. The place is elegant and the table setting is beautiful too. We opted for the bubble afternoon tea ($140 for two) which comes with glasses of champagne each. Champagne is tasty. Tea is delightful. The food is where it didn't quite go as well. The presentation is quite beautiful. But it is nothing like what I saw on instagram. That's ok as long as it tastes good right? A few things tasted decent. But some probably need a tint but tweaking. Savory: The pesto veggie sandwich is so delicious! However, all the sandwich breads are toasted which is quite unconventional. The egg salad sandwich is kinda soupy but tasted ok. Scone: They forgot about it. Server at first pointed at the macarons and called them scone and I was hella confused. But then he realized he forgot about the scones and went back to see if they have any. He brought out some scones. I think it's orange scones? They tasted... like grocery store scones. We were served foamy whipped cream instead of butter or clotted cream. And the jam is still gelled up like it's scooped from a can of jelly. Sweet: the blueberry muffins were so delicious! Love them. The fruits are fresh. My friend doesn't care for sweets so I was able to try all the macarons. Some are underbaked and mushy. And some are overcooked and crunchy. My friend heard the cronch from across the table. The cheesecake has a soggy graham cracker bottom. But the fruits are delightful. Perhaps my bar is set too high with my first two wonderful tea experiences before. Perhaps we just came on a really bad day. Service is attentive and I can tell he is genuine and doing his best. This review is based on our recent afternoon tea experience only. We arrived at the Hotel Nikko, checked into Restaurant Anzu for our afternoon tea reservation. Hotel Nikko interior is beautiful by the way, separate review. Pro: Very friendly staff. Great service. Beautiful space. Lovely ambiance & quiet. Cute place settings. Nice bathrooms. Con: Afternoon tea is very subpar. Choices of tea tend to be limited and toward too sweet selections. The finger sandwiches bread was too dry and didn't seem fresh. The sweets offered seemed to be factory-made, doesn't seem to be house made confections. Also one pastry had a hair stuck to it. That was ick! Other places I have been to offer Devonshire Cream (aka clotted cream) for scones and things but here, they had a small dish of whipped cream. The tea cups while nice weren't suitable for afternoon hot tea drinking because there's no handle, so burning hot. When we first sat down, we asked if there were other food offerings as my husband wasn't really into the tea experience but came in because of me. We were going to order additional food for him, but they didn't have anything which turned out to be good since the food was not good anyway. Tea experience was $100 for two with an auto gratuity of 20% which is fine if everything was awesome, but based on our experience, it's more for our friendly waiter. The service and ambiance at Anzu is so nice. The food is better than typical hotel restaurant food. I haven't been for dinner, but enjoy the breakfast. It's really nice that they let children have a discounted buffet. Since my husband and I have smaller appetites and eat light breakfasts, we order a la carte. We appreciate that the entire party doesn't have to order the buffet in order for buffet access. The best thing is the hospitality. We make a habit of having dinner at Anzu before a performance at Feinsteins SF, and last night was no exception. More about the combined experience and some changes we were not aware of, at the end! Service continues to be top notch at Anzu. Our server was attentive, friendly and professional. The food took a small hit last night. The menu had changed a bit since our last visit, including a Wagyu New York Strip steak that the hubby ordered. I ordered "The Rock" which is on the appetizer menu but consists of thinly sliced raw Wagyu served with a hot rock, so you can cook your own. When dinner arrived, mine was exactly as expected, the beef was so tender and tasty. However, hubby's steak looked like something from the grocery store. It was tough and bland and so I had hubby try mine as comparison, and there was none, the difference was night and day between two "wagyu" products. All in all, I am certain we will go back and not let one bad dinner ruin our repeat experiences. Now for the changes....which if they were made clear on the websites of either the restaurant or #FeinsteinsSF, I missed it. In the past, dining at Anzu would include a partial validation for valet parking, which combined with validation from the club, would basically take care of your parking costs. NOT ANYMORE! So at Anzu, they now add an automatic 20% gratuity, which I generally do not have a problem with, but when the credit card receipt comes, it still has a line for tipping. If I hadn't reviewed the bill, and yes I know "who doesn't", I would tip another 20% on top of the amount already charged. Next when the server returned with the bill and my parking tab, she informed us that they no longer validate parking. Next, when we went downstairs to #FeinsteinsSF, we were told that they also no longer validate parking at the hotel, unless you are a "Friend of Feinsteins", which if you are not aware is an annual membership costing several hundred dollars. The hostess stated the change as though there may be other "offsite" parking they validate, but again we were not aware of this change. This resulted in an additional $65 for parking which was not expected. Oh well, the show last night was worth every penny we paid between dinner, show and parking, so I'm not really complaining - just providing a "heads up". read more

We made a reservation on Sunday at 12pm and arrived to find out that Anzu does not have the Sunday Brinch anymore. Their website (restaurantanzu.com) still shows brinch listed. The servers were great enough to let us dine from the breakfast buffet, which was wrapping up at 12 pm. The service was excellent but the Webb site deforest needs to be updated and perhaps an announcement to let others know that the brunch is no longer offered. read more

This place is an absolute joke and I can't believe anyone would choose to come here. We came here for Valentines Day and got the Valentines Special. It was $85 a person?? Give or take? Included tax and 20% gratuity. We had a table of 4 but our total came out to $400+, makes no sense. __ The portion sizes are HALARIOUS. I actually laughed out loud. Fine dining? No literally. Fine like a grain of sand. Our starter appetizer was half a quail egg. The salad was pretty ok. The steak was very good, I'll give it that. I had a wonderful dinner at Anzu for a Friday night celebration. The pork chops were juicy and delicious, and the butternut squash ravioli was so creamy. The atmosphere is nice and classy, especially the hotel lobby at Hotel Adeline! I would've given this place a full five stars if not for the service. When we arrived, there was no one at the front desk for 10 minutes, and when we were finally seated, it took another 15 minutes before the server finally came to take our order. We had dinner here with the kiddos. They have great service and very clean high chairs with seat belts that work. The ambiance is nice and relaxing. My kids loved the signs with water bubbles inside! We really enjoyed the appetizer and salad, but we're disappointed with the main courses. My kids devoured the meatballs and their French fries, but barely touched their cheese burger (too rare for kids). They didn't have hot dog. The squash salad, egg plant, and rock were amazing! This was the dinner half of my first "dinner and a show" outing post-pandemic. I was going out to see a live music event at Feinstein's (Broadway couple Kelli Barrett and Jarrod Spector) at the Hotel Nikko and remembered that Anzu was just upstairs. The combination of dinner at Anzu and a performance at Feinstein's is an elegant and classic night out in San Francisco. For dinner, I ordered their pre-fixe (an appetizer, entree and dessert) PLUS "The Rock" - thinly sliced Wagyu that you cook on a sizzling river stone. For the pre-fixe, I ordered the 1/2 Anzu roll, the black cod and the matcha cheesecake. Everything was really good. I loved the black cod - this preparation with the Japanese vegetables and broth is one of my favorites. Service was attentive but not fussy and the live piano player right there provided a nice, relaxing ambiance. Prices are what you'd expect to pay for dinner at an upscale hotel. The pre-fixe was $65 (this was more than enough for one person but I'm a big guy) and the Rock was $24. I ordered a mocktail mojito ($8) and that was outstanding. Anzu has been there a very long time and I love rediscovering this SF classic. I'll be back for another dinner and a show soon. read more

Started off badly, got worse When I booked the New Year's Eve dinner for my family (wife, son and me), OneTable asked whether or not I wanted the $140/person Prix Fixe and I responded No. I checked the day after I completed the booking and it still said No. But when we were seated we were given the Prix Fixe menu, so I asked the server for the regulation menu. He said, we only have Prix Fixe on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day so OneTable was wrong. Resigned to Prix Fixe, we made our choices from the meager selections. The starter was the tiniest oyster I'd ever seen, with four or five tiny cavier eggs on top. Next we had spicy tuna rolls. We came to the Bay Area from Tokyo 14 years ago, and spicy tuna is not Japanese. But we all ordered it because the vegetarian roll looked sad. Next we had consommé, which was OK but it said "Consume" on the menu. For this price one would expect spell checking. The consommé was nice, but no better than the Knorr instant consommé we buy at the supermarket in Japantown. Wife and son had pork belly, which was so-so. I can't eat pork, so I had the "Wafu" (Japanese style) pasta. It was not Wafu. It was just fettuccine flavored with cream sauce and a little olive oil--too rich, not Wafu, and it gave me an upset stomach. And it was highway robbery--the main dish for a $140/person dinner?? In the end wife and son had chocolate lava cake and I had pumpkin panna cotta. The pumpkin pudding was OK. The lava cake was not--it was just a chocolate cupcake scooped out with bitter, partially melted bitter chocolate in the middle. To have a bee sting on a crying face (how we say, "Add insult to injury") service was extremely slow. We had to wait at least 15-20 minutes between each tiny serving. Then at the end, the check ALREADY ADDED a 20% Service Charge, and left a blank for Additional Tip. I understand adding the tip in advance for a large group, but we were only three people. If I could I would have reduced the tip to 18%... read more

Despite what some reviews said about Sunday brunch I decided to give it a try and am very glad I did. High quality and delicious food from the sushi to the hot dishes which included muscovy duck today and a brunch sized bowl of udon noodles with tempura shrimp. The service is outstanding without being intrusive. Friendly and professional and easy to chat with. The restaurant itself is very attractive and appeals to those wanting a better dining experience. And I'm glad I decided to get dessert. A molten lava chocolate cake. This restaurant should have a lot more customers. Yeah the brunch isn't cheap but you get what you pay for. If you want cheap there's a Jack in the Box a block away. read more

Pretty disappointing experience. We made a reservation here because of restaurant week and after reviewing several menus at various establishments we chose Anzu. What a mistake! Restaurant week exists for people to explore new places. The menu is fixed and includes a starter, entree and desert. Perfect, right? Not exactly. When we arrived, we were welcomed by the host, she was great. Everything went downhill with the server. He immediately offered us sparkling water, of course, we said yes. It was delicious expensive water, but, I expected that, I was planning on ordering more than just the restaurant week menu - because, I wanted to really try the place out. Cocktails, service, ambience- all of it! We both had delicious cocktails, and the bartender was excellent. Back to the server....as I'm perusing the menu, I said, oh! We actually chose to come here, because of restaurant week! His demeanor immediately changed from friendly happy server to - I just want to get you out of here. Total asshole. He brought the menu, and said, oh, there's no halibut, it's salmon and walked away. When he returned, I said, I have some questions...if it's not halibut, and now it's salmon, can you tell me how it's prepared? Is it fresh salmon? Or frozen? Every damn restaurant can serve salmon because it's readily available frozen, and it can taste pretty decent. Trust me, I lived in Seattle....tons of salmon. He said it's the same. I said, what's the same? He said the preparation. So, I guess that means all the stuff with the halibut is with the salmon. Ok! They are completely different flavors of fish. This is unacceptable. Whatever.... Seems weird to serve it in leu of halibut with all the same prep. I ordered it. Here comes the appetizer. He plops it down and walks away like a server at IHOP. What is this? How do we eat it,? He left us empty papers that should have had chopsticks inside. Nope! No fork either. We had to pick it up and eat it with our hands! He completely disappeared. The main dish salmon was just ok. The desert was blah. Nothing about this experience or food will make me return or tell anyone else to try this place. DON'T PARTICIPATE IN RESTAURANT WEEK IF YOU DON'T WANT TO ACTUALLY PARTICIPATE. Tell your servers to treat all customers regardless of what they order with respect and courtesy. I feel like I flushed $300 down the toilet. Salmon IS NOT Halibut!!! Paper is not chopsticks or forks. Our party of five went there before attending a show in Feinstein's at the Nikko, and by doing that we had a table reserved for us in the showroom. Just like our spontaneous adventure to an expensive steakhouse, we decided to try the omakase here. It was fueled by some delicious cocktails and enjoyment from looking at the gorgeous decor all around. We didn't know how many courses there would be, and we were stuffed by the end. The food itself was pretty good. Upscale and colorful. We started with an appetizer, followed by a special roll, nigiri, sashimi, and grilled fish. The nigiri and sashimi were my favorite parts, of course. The meal ended with green tea ice cream. Service was classy but not particularly memorable. I'm assuming they get a ton of business from being in Hotel Nikko, where I've been meaning to do a staycation at some point. I liked the meal overall but wouldn't go raving to everyone about it. Class and elegance are just two words to describe the food and service at Restaurant Anzu, which serves elevated Japanese fusion and sushi cuisine with a new Californian flair. Located in the posh Hotel Nikko San Francisco in downtown San Francisco near the city's stylish Union Square shopping district. Nowadays, the area is suffering from the same fate that has befallen much of the city with empty streets and boarded up storefronts. The hotel is not alone in this plight despite the fact that they are open and taking in hotel guests, you would never know this fact since their front doors remain technically locked, but with a press of a button at their front doors, a hotel doorman would come and unlock the front door for you and promptly tells you to head up the escalators through the lobby and up another flight of stairs to Restaurant Anzu where a beautiful fountain in their entranceway greets you. Upon entry, you will notice a lovely bar area that also serves as their sushi bar and in theory their host station where we checked in. We passed through their multiple open rooms for private dining that were decked out to the nines with stylish lighting, tables and chairs. This attention to detail goes all the way to your dining ware at Restaurant Anzu from your metallic napkin rings to the elegant stemware and drinkware on the table as we sit down. We of course were here for San Francisco Restaurant Week, which allows local restaurateurs a chance to show off their menus to locals and tourists alike for an affordable price point. That way we can sample some of the best dishes of a restaurant's menu, see what they have to offer in terms of cuisine, ambience and service, and may we be so inclined to return for future visits. For their pre-fixe restaurant week meal, Restaurant Anzu had only one option for us diners, which certainly made things easier to select what we were dining on, but of course was lacking in overall dining options. For our appetizer course, we had their Anzu Roll which was four pieces of a sushi roll filled with snow crab, shrimp tempura, spicy tuna cucumber, topped with spicy mayo and served on a bed of unagi sauce. For our entrée course, we had their Broiled Misoyaki Black Cod which was served with lotus root, soy braised shiitake mushrooms, balls made from edamame and served in a bowl of truffle dashi broth. And for our dessert course we had their Matcha Cheesecake, which was topped with raspberry coulis, fresh berries and vanilla chantilly. Everything at Restaurant Anzu from the service to the quality of our dishes was wonderful. Our sushi roll was one of the best I had ever had while dining at the very least in San Francisco. Each piece of sushi was filled with so much flavor that you could truly tell the amount of effort our sushi maker put into assembling each roll. Our braised cod was slightly uneven in terms of the size of each piece but that was to be expected, but what was done with each ingredient that was added in could only be described as a greatly composed work of art. Each spoonful of fish and broth and vegetables was perfectly placed together with each bite. Our dessert was the perfect way to end our meal as the cheesecake wasn't top heavy and the flavor wasn't too overwhelmed with matcha flavor, which was appreciated. Restaurant Anzu is definitely a place that could use some support from diners both from locals and tourists alike as they are quite hidden in an area of San Francisco that's not really being visited right now. We dined there for two hours and there were literally six tables that were filled with diners all evening long. There's just no buzz right now and that is to be expected as the status of the hotel that they call home is quite frankly up in the air right now. It would be a shame if anything would happen to Restaurant Anzu, as they've managed to adapt to the times which includes a limited menu and only being open for dinner and four nights a week. They're trying their best and Restaurant Anzu with solid service and deliciously plated meals, dinner here is something that is to be savored and enjoyed. read more

Today is Mother's Day and we brought the family for a beautiful brunch celebrating the family and the wonderful Mother's in our family. The menu was lacking and terrible. No crab, no prime rib, no smoke salmon, no eggs Benedict, no deviled eggs.... No sushi!!! Nothing that you would associate with a traditional brunch much less a MothersDay brunch! I will not be coming back to this restaurant. We where here several years and all of the above was present. Today what a waste of time and money. Given the task of finding a restaurant for the 5 of us s for Thanksgiving, a bit of searching lead me here. A buffet menu! Major points! $65 for Seniors! $95 elsewise. Bargain! There was such a variety, all the American classics including delicious turkey and ham, but also raw oysters, shrimp, sushi and lots of dim sum! Holey moly! What a feast. We've been to the Thanksgiving buffet prior to the pandemic and the salads and hot dishes were excellent. The dim sum was on the rubbery side. I skipped the shellfish and sushi. Pre-pandemic the carving station for ham and prime rib were also very good. We returned for Easter brunch in 2023. Salads, soup, and some of the hot dishes were very good. Dim Sum was rubbery, like before. No more carving station, instead the lamb and ham were pre-carved, over cooked, dry and yucky tasting. There is a dessert station too, but it was mainly uber-sweet items so we didn't indulge in much of it. I give it high praise for the salads, service, ambience, and price. But was really disappointed with the lack of carving stations with high quality ham and prime rib. read more

Breakfast buffet. Poor quality for that price. $42 per person, plus tax plus service fee and on top of that there is a tip blank to fill. No real green tea. The packaged NUMI gun powder Chinese tea they serve was too weak and tasted terrible. Salted salmon was too salty and the rest of the food was below average Japanese restaurant quality. Natto was not sticky the fermentation culture was gone. Nishime was cold and no flavor then pastries.... Not sure what kind of oil they uses. Anyway for this price with all added fees? I would look for freshness and flavors. We look for hotel Nikko's quality around the world and this one was not. If we knew what they had in advance, I wouldn't have been there. The ravioli was obviously cooked from frozen, not from scratch and was weirdly underdone places. The sauce (?) was watery and tasteless. The Hotel Nikko makes a night out in Union Square effortlessly simple -- dinner upstairs at hotel-chic, Asian-fusion restaurant Anzu followed by a performance downstairs at Feinstein's (review to follow.) I ordered the Roasted Sonoma Chicken Breast ($26), a dish that helped me understand why friends, family, & fellow yelpers consider chicken the most boring of proteins. The flavorful jus & root veggies only slightly improved my meal which was otherwise quite drab. My friend's pick, The Rock ($22), brought some excitement to the table. A sizzling river rock browns thin slices of wagyu in just a few seconds per side, which he said paired well with the trio of sauces. As with most wagyu portions, this starter was petite. Simple decor and limited menu (price-fix the night we went). We were here for Valentine's and excited to try the sushi- which looked amazing in pictures. Well, that's the only way we saw it- apparently Valentine's was a set menu ONLY, at $125 each. None of it was appealing to me; 1st: simple salad (I can get that anywhere) 2nd: Oysters or vegan "faux gras" (a BIG DOUBLE NO WAY!) Mains: Salmon (nothing special), Beef Cheeks or a Tofu dish. Dessert: Strawberry Panna Cotta. For someone else, this may have been amazing. I was extremely disappointed- expecting Japanese food at a Japanese restaurant in a Japanese hotel-- call me crazy? I have been coming here for years. It is very very pricy so cannot come here often. The food is good, but very small portions, and a very hefty price tag. I do really enjoy the black cod. It's a lovely decor in the restaurant. Service was good. Just a bit too expensive for what you get. read more

Came in for the weekend brunch. Decent selection of food with a chef to take your omelette orders. The dim sum items, smoked salmon, cheeses and meats were all good but nothing stood out much. The fruits for dessert was probably my favorite part of the buffet. Service was great and the restaurant and hotel are beautifully decorated. read more

Staying in union square and need a great restaurant within walking distance of your hotel? Check out Anzu. Great selection of delicious dishes. Sashimi was fresh and beautifully displayed. The sushi was delicious though the portions are small. Steaks are cooked perfectly. We ordered pretty much every sauce and all agreed the bordelaise is the way to go. The Nutella bread pudding was also a hit with everyone in my party. read more

We went to see our friends in a performance downstairs and decided to eat in the hotel. The fish was so fresh. I had the seared tuna and my husband loves his por chop. Great sushi options as well. A place everyone would like. Great staff and very attentive. It is expensive. However, a nice date night out. read more

Could've been better.... Restaurant Anzu is located inside hotel Nikko and I believe that this place attracts a lot of foreigners (people visiting SF) because there's just so much guests here coming in with suitcases and bags. I ate here with a friend around 6 PM on a weekend night- the place was not packed but moderate. I was seated and I ordered the follow: pork belly chawanmushi - super dry egg.... texture was just horrible and no taste to the egg and the pork belly was a bit too rough; 72 hrs short ribs - this was a little better but it's nothing spectacular about it at all; uni carbonara- this dish was not what i expected at all, no sight of uni and the udon was hard. After that being said, the food here is just OK. The staff were very friendly and prompt for table service so I do give them 3 stars. Also, the parking was terrible to find because the entrance of the hotel was actually across parc 55. read more

My husband's aunt organized a Christmas brunch here for the whole family. Hotel Nikko is definitely a nicely decorated hotel. It took a few rounds around the block and we finally got street parking across the street. It's tough guys, so most likely you'll be looking for garage parking. It had the standards of bacon, sausages, pancakes, fruits, pastries, cereals, yogurt, scrambled eggs, and there were made to order eggs (orders to be placed with the waitstaff). Everything was fine, but I was just wanting more. Perhaps an omelet station, or Belgian waffles? Or just a few "lunch ish" options. None of the Japanese food options interested me (tamago, porridge, rice, and a few other options). Service was nice and attentive. If you are truly looking for a breakfast buffet in the area Anzu won't disappoint, I just wanted some other selections. read more
