Chili fries are horrible, and the chili is super salty, and burnt. Burgers are an eh. Portions are small. Atmosphere: D The floors are in bad shape, and held down with black tape in many areas. Trash cans are ready to fall apart, look filthy on the exterior and have trash littered underneath. It feels and looks like a dirty Wal Mart. Experience: F For such a great location, this restaurant is an embarrassment to the quaint and cozy feel of Downtown Williamsburg. This place was good. I am currently vacationing from Tennessee. Me and my family decided to stop by this place to eat. I got a Cheeseburger with fries, my brother and his friends got chicken tenders and fries. The fries were pretty good. The ambiance of the place was amazing being a restaurant dedicated to the past. The burger was good but was rather small for $6.25. The service was good despite the place being overpriced for small burgers. The place is clean and well kept. read more

Fairly curt presentation at the register and the first time visitor is really rushed to place an order from a good sized, wall mounted menu...a struggle that was being discussed with other guests seated at adjacent tables. Be prepared to take care of yourself...dirty tables and no one assisting customers in the dining area whatsoever. That might work on non-peak hours but not when the place is consistently 80% full during holiday and other busy times. And, why did I pay a "tip" when paying my bill BEFORE receiving my food? That was my mistake...don't do the same. My hamburger (see photo) other than the refrigerator-cold bun was ok but obviously sloppily put together. Anyway, this is how things go when, regardless of a lack of service and general courtesies, a place does a good volume of business simply because of a favorable location. This place was delicious. Fattening and horrible for you but delicious. Initially I planned on eating somewhere else on this block but when I saw this place and looked at the menu I figured, what the heck. I'm glad I did, I don't usually eat this type of food but it's good sometimes. They have burgers, fries, shakes, hot dogs, etc. Most of the items you select and then you pick a few toppings (looks like usually you get two included) like mustard, ketchup, cheese, jalapeños, etc. I got a hotdog with onions and mustard and slaw. It was GOOD. My friend got a double bacon cheeseburger with ketchup and mustard and a large french fry order. The french fries were soooo good. I tried a bite of the burger too and it was amazing. Everything I had was good - the gals behind the counter were friendly and helpful - the food was out really quickly and there was plenty of seating in the comfortable and retro decorated diner seating space. They don't have any good allergy friendly choices on their menu. When I asked why they cook everything in soy bean oil they said "We cook everything in soy bean oil because people are more allergic to peanuts than soy." They could be using canola oil or olive oil! Not everything has to be cooked in soy. They also said that maybe they're not the problem I am. They are very rude, so I recommend that you shouldn't go here. read more

Cute little college place. Probably great hang out for friends in between classes. Hopped in here after traveling for a while and wasn't impressed with the quality of the food. Fries were delicious but the burger and chicken sandwich weren't awesome. My advice would be to maybe ask what their specialty is and order that. It was busy so I assume we just didn't make the best menu choices. read more

This place is such a great spot. I've been here several times with my daughter and she loves it as well as I. The employees are always welcoming and the place is always clean. The burgers are simple, to the point and delicious. Not too fat and overweight and well portioned. The fries are the best in my opinion that's the style of fries I like. If I could gove 0 stars I would. We ordered burgers, fries, chicken nuggets, and onion rings. Drinking wise we got sodas, fresh squeezed lemonade, and a chocolate milkshake. The burgers were flavorless, tasted like they came from a box, and were dry. The fries were blanched too long so they did not get crispy. The chicken nuggets were overly breaded and greasy. The onion rings were the only that was good. Definitely not worth the price i get better at McDonalds. The milk shake tastes like basic ice cream. The "fresh squeezed lemonade" was basically lemon water that tasted like the peel had sat too long. Other then having the good ice I would never come back. And i can get that ice elsewhere. Trying to think of some positive to share first. The milkshake was decent. Exactly like McDonald's. They are lucky to have the location they do or I don't think they'd be in business. There is some outdoor seating which is apparently unmanned, the tables are dirty, they don't bring the food to you or clean it up. The service was bad. The food which by the way if you're looking at prices here on yelp be aware that those are some very old prices. They have all at least doubled if not tripled. I got a cheeseburger, probably a little less good than say a McDonalds burger, and a fresh squeezed lemonade which was just water and sugar with a dirty half lemon in it. My kids got grilled cheese which was just wonder bread with one slice of velveta.and my husband got fish n chips. Literally fish, singular. One piece of dry fish. Old dry cold fries. Tiny portions. We all left starving and mad at the price and deeply regretting choosing this place for my sons birthday dinner. read more

I finally made it to Retro's after passing by it many times, and I wasn't disappointed. Their crab cake was the best I have had in this area in a long time. The flavor was very good but the slight crunch on the outside is what really sold me. The crab cake was followed by a chocolate cookie shake which was decedent. I will definitely go back. read more

I'm not sure how this place is still in business. For starters I would describe the atmosphere as a put together diner. Their cheeseburgers were good but not anything special, fries were good (probably the best part), and the lamb burger was interesting tasting from what my husband said. If you want the absolute best burger eVer you must try Retro's Grilled Lamb Burger. It is amazing. This place is a gem in Colonial Williamsburg. They also have a crab cake sandwich that is actually more crab than cake. So far everything I have tried has been great but the Lamb Burger has s my favorite. read more

Cute place and good location. Stopped for a bite while out shopping and very disappointed. Interior was in need of repair, floors and garbage cans were falling apart. The tables looked like they hadn't been wiped all day. As for the food...... Fries were good. Fresh cut and crispy. Hot dogs were good, a lot of topping options. However, we were extremely disappointed in the burgers. With a name like Retro's I expected a big, greasy diner burger. What I got was a tiny, flat, frozen burger that tasted like nothing. We were recommended to check out Retro's Good Eats in downtown W-burg, as it was a retro-esque eatery that serves up soups, salads, burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, blue plate specials, and frozen custard. This restaurant came into town when the old Williamsburg Drug Company closed down, and the soda fountain disappearing along with it. I tried their Cheeseburger, with sauteed onions, mayo, ketchup, and mustard (this burger was just okay, as it wasn't that monstrous; it was just way too heavy with the mustard), Fried Pickles (fried pickle spears - it has a nice thin coating of batter, and their house sauce was delicious that went with it; probably good with the burgers!), Funnel Cake Fries (literally funnel cake, cut into shapes of fries - these were tasty, as it came dusted with powdered sugar, and they were hot and fresh - yum!), and a Chocolate Mint Shake (this was cold, creamy, and had a nice chocolatey mint taste - yum!). I liked the counter seating with the swivel stools, and the cashier up at the front was friendly. Disappointed and left hungry. My partner and I went in on a whim after stopping off for coffee at Aroma's (which is awesome). I immediately got stink eye from the woman behind the counter when I walked up. No idea why (until I realized later it must have been because they were closing in 20 minutes but really...why would you get angry at a customer about that?) I looked at the menu which is a giant billboard on the wall and decided to go with the meatloaf platter and a side salad. My partner ordered the chili cheese fries and grilled cheese. I was told they were out of mash potatoes ( who runs out of a staple like mash potatoes? ) and she'd substitute the salad in instead. We paid and headed to the drink station which had 5 drink choices and of course the one we wanted was out of syrup and shot soda water. We walked over to the back and sat near the windows. My partner heard our number called and walked up to grab our food. Two employees who were sitting near us reading their phones told me I'd need to take my trash up to the front because they were leaving and just changed the trash bags. My partner at the moment walks up juggling the food because apparently they either didn't have trays to set the food on or didn't want us to make dirty dishes for them? Reference my pictures to see the delights we were cooked...or in this case overcooked. I rarely write bad reviews but what we were served was horrible. Meatloaf- Way overcooked, no idea what meat was used but it was not beef. It had large chunks of green pepper and onion and as I type this I still can't get the funky flavor it left in my mouth out. Side salad- More like end of the day leftover hamburger cast offs with wilted spoiled and bruised lettuce. Chili cheese fries- French fries were good but he hesitated going into the chili and cheese portion seeing my meatloaf. The cheese on the fries was most likely a knock off velveta. He ate half of them and couldn't continue and the meat was so-so. Grilled cheese- Came out late and we know why. It was burned. The bread was soggy with grease. He didn't even try it. We placed out napkins on our food and promptly left. I do not recommend this place. read more
