Ventured over to Lakeside this evening. We were greeted by a friendly staff, Matthew and (Eddy) Tony and sat outside. It wasn't crowded for a Saturday night, but there was plenty of seating inside and out. Lots of different beer and wine selections and some nice cocktails. We did a bunch of shareable plates. Made a to-go order - flank steak with kimchi rice, fish n chips, scotch egg. The service was quick and the staff were friendly. The steak was seasoned well with some pink and tasted delicious. The kimchi rice was very skimpy and did not taste like kimchi. the fish n chips were bland and nothing was cripsy. the scotch egg was good, however, the sauce it came with left a bad after taste. this definitely could have been better for the price. will not be coming back read more

Revel is the place everyone wants to know exists but sometimes just don't know it yet. After many years in the restaurant business and relocating here from NY I have found my happy place. The vibe, culture and feel of the place is perfect. Josh and team at the bar welcome you and embrace you and make you part of the family right off. They have a fabulous happy hour with $5 drinks, and great prices on appetizers. It was definitely crowded when we got there with a bit of a wait but the service was fast. I got a sangria which was a large size but very wine heavy and not as sweet as I typically like them. The crab cake sliders were the highlight - absolutely delicious and a unique combination. I was really looking forward to the arancini but it fell a bit short as it was bland especially if your bite didn't have sauce. It seems to be a great place for any occasion though! read more

9 of us gathered for happy hour last night. We enjoyed a mix of wines, beers and mock cocktails -- positive reviews from all. And then we settled in on shared happy hour offerings from Bang Bang shrimp, crab fritters, Brussels sprouts and more. 90+ minutes of fun and topped by the delicious happy hour cannolis, a fun chocolate and peanut butter variety. Just discovered Revel and my girlfriend and I decided to give it a try and we were honestly pretty happy with our experience. We started off with the crab fritters for our first course, which was done with the right amount of crispiness and flavor I was honestly impressed. We order cocktails too, but after ordering a couple different drinks we both agreed we weren't enthusiastic about them as most drink drinks felt pretty weak. For the second course, I ordered the steak and she ordered the braised beef short rib, which, after trying both I wish I had gone with the short rib, I was honestly jealous that I didn't order that too. For the third course we finished with dessert she ordered the chocolate mousse, which was honestly some of the best mousse I've had in a while. I ordered the tiramisu and this was probably the best tiramisu I've had; I wish I had ordered it three or four times. Revel has good vibes and the staff is really nice. It's a small spot (parking can be tight), but definitely feels really homey. I definitely plan on coming back for the food and that tiramisu. read more

Visited for Richmond Restaurant Week and enjoyed the brussels sprouts, shrimp fritters, grilled bistro steak with veggies, pork belly cassoulet and pumpkin cheesecake. The food was delicious, especially the appetizers. The white beans in the cassoulet could have been slow cooked a little longer. I visited the first time with some friends who have fallen in love with this restaurant. We sat at the bar for the happy hour and I was pleasantly surprised at the menu - both the HH and regular menus. The bar was crowded for happy hour but thinned out after happy hour ended at 6pm. The restaurant isn't large and doesn't take reservations so I recommend coming early. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and the fun vibe. This is an amazing little place. We showed up at 3:30 and it was already filling up for their Happy Hour of both food and drinks. The small plates were phenomenal. This was a cute spot with potential. It fell flat on service and confusion over their closing time. They are listed as open til 10pm on Saturday so I came around 815 ready to relax and have a drink or two while reading. I felt rushed by both bartenders and then overheard them saying they were closing at 9. It bothers me when businesses do this. I understand and appreciate the "til midnight or later" phrasing, but if you list operating hours as A to B, it's really frustrating on the consumer end to be told you are closing early due to it being a slow night. The bartender returned to ask if I was getting food and when I said no, he was very abrupt and said "Good, that's all I need to know" And the female bartender came back to me around 8:50 and said "are you going to want more alcohol" (I think more professional / hospitable phrasing might be "would you enjoy another drink/beverage/round" I did like my pink grinch martini (Tito's and peppermint liqueur) a lot but for the price point, it was a bit steep. Decor wise, it's a cozy spot and I wish I had had more time to browse the bottle selection but I just did not feel relaxed or welcome here unfortunately. read more

Another amazing Lakeside staple, this restaurant is a must-try. The scotch egg was delicious and is not common on many menus. The breads and spreads was decent and a good amount to share amount a couple of people. But, the short rib panino. This sandwich was delicious!! *Restaurant week review* I've seen really great reviews for Revel and was really excited to try it during restaurant week. They do not take reservations and are only open for dinner so we made sure to go early and were seated immediately. The service was slow and we felt ignored but it was somewhat understandable given how busy it was. The food and drinks were average. The best part of the meal was the desserts. The batter on the fried oysters was falling off. The gnocchi portion was small and the snap peas were inedible/not cooked, which was unfortunate as it was a large component of the dish. Overall, we felt the price didn't match our experience and there wasn't anything that enticed us to come back. Also, the parking lot is very small and limited. read more

Loved everything about my first dining experience at Revel! I've been putting off going here for months and I'm so mad I did because I was definitely missing out. Unfortunately I filled up on the small plates so I had to miss out on the larger plates (I had my eye on the prawns hehe). Still, all the small plates we shared were delicious and filling. I am way behind on this place, I guess. A friend arranged to meet me here, and I was not at all aware of Revel. When I mentioned it to Wyfe, she immediately knew about it and that it gets good reviews. First, setting. It is bigger on the inside than I could have imagined. You enter through a small market area (I guess) that I frankly didn't really notice. Next time. This opens into a large room divided between a lengthy bar plus high tops and about 15 low top tables seating 2 - 4, about 2 feet apart along the wall. Those two areas are divided by a shoulder height wall. There is also a patio in the rear. The air was stuffy and on the warm side, and since I got there when there were few people this got more noticeable as it filled up. Music was 80's pop, loud enough to hear but never intrusive. Conversation was easy. There are I believe two TVs tuned to sports. The crowd was upscale local and skewed older, it was not the happy hour barflies and business bro's one finds at many local places. Service was exceptional but not hovering. I got there at 5 for a 5:15 get together and was seated immediately out of site of the door. I told the guy at the front I was meeting someone so they could put us together. At 5:45 I got a text from my friend saying WTF..... turned out she had been on the other side of the shoulder wall since 5:05. I go into all that because while I was waiting and not eating food and only drinking tea, my server was really nice and patient as the rest of her section filled up around me. She was attentive for the rest of our visit. Once my friend joined me, we ordered three small plates (pro tip - happy hour drinks and small plates til 6 PM) and it was brought out one plate at a time, tapas mode. The portions were decent for the price -- oysters rockefeller was 3 small oysters prepped well with spinach, bacon, romano, and paprika aoili Would love a larger portion or larger oysters, but for $5 you cannot beat it. (There is a dinner portion for $14 -- again, I was there for the happy hour small plate menu.) The mushroom tartine (more a mushroom crustini) featured shrooms, parmesan, and pickled onions on a slice of baguette. This was fine, not particularly strong flavors but it certainly met the description on the menu. Also $5. We also had the house made meatballs, venison/veal/pork with sauce, mozz, and a few microgreens (menu says basil, I think it wasn't) in a portion of 3 1" balls for $6. Very well executed, I wanted to order more. As the prices suggest, these are small plate portions / tasting menu. The two of us could have easily ordered two or three more plates but happy hour was over and I'd been sitting for quite a while by that point. While I did not indulge this evening, the cocktail menu looked good and my friend enjoyed what she ordered (I did not capture what it was.) Will bring Wyfe here very soon -- this place is perfect for those with small appetites, those who want to taste a little of many things, and those just wanting a nice place to sit and chat during happy hour. read more

Very good food and service! Came here on sat evening around 5PM before stopping at the botanical garden and I got the bees knees (8.5/10) cocktail less sweet and my mom got the sangria which was VERY heavy on the bourbon. Not my favorite but she really enjoyed it. We all shared the patatas bravas (9/10) great soft interior potatoes with the perfect crisp on the outside. I wasn't a huge fan of the sausage because it was lamb. My brother got the empanadas, my mom got the butternut squash ravioli, and I had the special which was seared rockfish with clams, a cream sauce, and spinach (9/10). We then got the strawberry shortcake (8/10) and the creme brûlée (4/10). The shortcake was good but I feel like there could've been more pound cake to strawberry ratio and the creme brûlée was more of a thicker consistency than a normal custard. Overall was really good! When Revel first opened, they had a great handle on service and the food was good. You could tell that they took pride in what they do and they did it well. I am not sure what happened since our first visit, and our second, but the atmosphere was completely different the last time we went in. We walked in and the hostess was very nice, no issue there, we opted for a bar seat as things weren't very crowded and we did not plan on staying long. As I said, it was not busy at the time, nor was it close to closing time. We were ignored for probably a solid 10 minutes before 1 of the two bartenders came to bring a menu. They did not say hello, they did not greet us, just put a menu down and we said hello, and were ignored. After sitting there in a little bit of shock for yet another 5 minutes, because I, myself was once a career bartender, we opted to leave. I understand the other side of things, but even on my busiest night, I never treated a customer like this. I could understand if things weren't busy and they were slammed, this wasn't the case. They were standing around and chatting to a couple of other guests. When we got up to leave. We were finally acknowledged with a very rude, "Oh, so you guys are out?" We just kept walking. Sorry, but with staff like this good luck in this neighborhood. They certainly aren't getting my business again. read more

They have a very comfortable ambience feel to the inside. But the back patio is where it's at. They have happy hour all week. Which gives you a chance to try items on the menu without buying a full meal. The servers have a great knowledge of the menu and a good understanding of the food. Very excited to finally check out this local market/bar. Obviously since I was the first official customer! This is a new establishment so everything is brand new and setup perfectly. You walk-in to an area with a small counter/register to your left where you are greeted. To your right you have a small market room where you can pick up wine, cheese and snacks. Moving further forward you have a nice size bar area on your left and dining/tables throughout the remainder of the large room. I couldn't stay long but I ordered a glass of wine at the bar. All the staff was friendly and one of the owners came over and introduced herself as well. While enjoying my glass of wine I glanced over the menus. There's a nice assortment of food, wine, beer and cocktail choices. The owner mentioned that there's a backyard which will have tables and games available too. The prices on the menu look to be reasonable but I say that without seeing the portion sizes. My glass of wine was half price since it was happy hour. This place has a lot of potential and I'll definitely be back. I'll give them 4 stars for now but I'm thinking this wine bar could be a 5 once I visit again and spend more time tasting from their menu. read more

One of my top restaurants experiences of 2024! A place that actually accomplishes what many other small plate, higher end dining don't: warm, inviting space with nice accent lighting and adequate room between tables; friendly informed servers who all pitch in when multiple plates come to the table; and delicious, approachable food with a global perspective. The falafel was straight out of Lebanon as was the roasted carrots with zatar, yogurt. The chicken stuffed pastillas with hot honey drizzle was amazing as was the duck with bok choy and pear gastrique and flank steak with chimmicuri. Excellent specialty cocktail list and very affordable wine list heavy on US labels. They have an extended happy hour I hear too with most of the regular menu available. Came during restaurant week and were thrilled with the experience. They do not take reservations so we had about a 15 minute was for a table. We each had a cocktail that was delicious and made with care. Our dinner was the outstanding. We split Brussels sprouts and steak tartare for our apps and while both were good the Brussels sprouts were the best I've ever had. So much so I forgot to even take a photo. Pictured is the empty plate . Our entrees were a steak with mushroom and red wine sauce with mashed potato's that was very rich and tender. I had pork belly with radishes and beans. Now, I do not like beans but they were so well seasoned with the pork fat that I ate them! The whole meal was delicious and tiramisu is my all time favorite dessert. The service was well timed and attentive. Additionally they have a small store for take home goods and lawn activities for warmer days. read more

Hubby and I didn't have the kids for the weekend so we decided to go out for ourselves. Decided date night at this location and no regrets! I totally forgot that it was restaurant week so we decided on their 3 course menu. Oh, there is limited parking in the front of the place, but we ended up parking across the street at the extra lot of parking. (CVS parking lot had towing signs up.) We were greeted very quickly by their hostess and was seated within 5-7 mins. Very cute atmosphere and plenty of dining tables to be seated and a big bar location. I saw that they also had outside patio/seatings and the lightings looked very beautiful. Service was fantastic! For cocktails we started on with cocktails "Honey Beezneez" (sp) and "The Pefect Pear". Presentation was beautiful and delicious. For our 3 courses, I decided on the Beef tartare, Bistro Steak, and Pate a Choux. Hubby decided on their Mussels, Short Rib Gnocchi, and Creme brulee. The food came out pretty quickly and the presentation did not disappoint! The mussel's broth was fantastic and the photo doesn't justify how much some of the mussels actually were. Beef tartare was tender and crispy baguette slices! Bistro steak was easy to slice and cooked to my perfect level with flavored sauteed mushrooms. The short rib gnocchi was packed with flavors but you had to be careful with how much blue cheese you split up - it was def strong but a great combo. Lastly, the creme brulee was my favorite - crispy and light. The pate a choux was nice if you like fruits and it came on a very cute pastry. Finally checked out a new neighborhood spot. I was surprised by the space, as it was much bigger and more spacious inside than one would believe driving by. We had our 4month old with us and had plenty of room to dine with our baby boy in his car seat with us at the table. It was clean, spacious and comfortably lit. Our waiter, Judd, was fantastic! He was friendly, informative and gave us good direction for how many small plates we should order. He was very attentive. I enjoyed a few beers on draft, both from some obscure Virginia breweries. The food menu covered a wide scope. There's something for everyone on the menu. My wife and I ordered 3 plates to start and ended up adding a 4th before it was all said and done. This is a "tapas" style menu. While the options of food were great and the plating nice, it all left a bit to be desired. Nothing truly wow'd me or stood out. All the plates are small plates, but each plate is done so well. My wife and I started with bread and spreads and venison and lamb skewers. If you go here you have to try the skewers. You will probably order 2. Well seasoned and no game flavor. Other food highlights was pork belly, raviolis, and chorizo dates. The atmosphere is ok. It's a market with a bar and tables. Finally got to check out Revel this past weekend. We got there early, 530ish on a Saturday and they had plenty of seating. For our meal we started with the beet salad, dates and squash ravioli. All three were so delicious, what a great start to the meal! The next round we went with the empanadas and patatas brava. Unfortunately I found the longest HAIR in my empanada. Gross but I didn't make a big deal about it when I told our waiter. He offered to make us a new order but being there were two still on the plate we figured what's the likelihood of there being another hair in those empanadas. So my date are the other two. I couldn't bring myself to have anymore. At the end of the meal I was surprised a manager didn't come over to apologize and that we were still charged full price for the dish but it's whatever I guess. Some restaurants are more generous when there's an issue. In all the food was delicious, the drinks were good and our server Josh was super attentive so would've given them a five but couldn't due to the epic strand of hair I had to pull from my mouth in the middle of dinner. read more

Food comes out when its fresh and hot, not dying on the pass waiting for other stuff. Steak Tartare, arancini, Brussels, burrata, empanadas, ham and potato soup, and breads. All amazing. A delightful establishment that I'm embarrassed to say I had not previously known about. This is located in the Lakeside area, and perhaps folks would understand it best as near Lewis Ginter. Parking is somewhat challenging but those in the know have explained that there is alternative parking across the street. As I poked around, I discovered that they carry quite a bit of local goods that I have seen at the various farmers markets which I love so much including hot honey, various barbecue sauces, jams, jellies, and also beautiful cutting boards etc. As such readers may wish to know that in addition to having food and libations, they have a market and a nice selection of wine and sundries. (you could probably get enough to make a picnic here!) With regards to the restaurant, I went on "Bastille day "and the description on yelp is that this restaurant is French. TBH, though there are some foods that are in the French realm by description, I would say that this is generous. I have given this establishment a 4 for other reasons mostly because I love what they are doing. I could immediately see their passion for local and all the things I ate were delicious, but I really don't get the sense of anything traditionally French other than the names of things and perhaps, the assembly. However don't let that stop you! I had delicious oysters. The service was friendly and the atmosphere nice for a casual gathering. Oh and by the way... They have an outside space which is a bonus! In summary I would take this friendly local establishment with its house-made variety of offerings any any day over a cookie cutter mediocre-food establishment that has fancy decor.
