Dropped off my kid at City Hall for his summer Youthworks orientation. I had 1.5 hrs to wait, so I wandered up the street to Revial. Never been there before and most likely, never will. The staff were cordial and friendly. The bar was empty, sans a cute woman eating a late lunch. Tactfully, I sat two stools over next to her. The bartender, who was very outgoing, gave me menu to look over. Quite extensive bar menu. Kale lollipops? I just decided to a a couple of drinks and be on my way." Do you have Johnny Walker Red?" No. Rather she explained they have a a selection of spirits from small distilleries. The list was in fact long, yet it didn't describe much else. Odd to me that they didn't stock a few top shelf spirits. I told the bartender that I just came in for a quick drink. She put three bottles of blended scotches in front of me, noting they are offered as a flight for $25. I had no idea what or where these are!?! Golden something... A bit dazed and confused, I decided to leave. I thanked the bartender for her help. She asked if there was a problem and I shrared that there wasn't anything wrong. I just wanted a drink and had no interest in contemplating the unique qualities on "hipster" spirits. At the end of the day, I didn't need a "senior moment." Just a Johnny Walker on the rocks. Beware Happy Hour! Had dinner here last Saturday night. There was a large billboard outside the entrance which advertised Happy Hour. Unfortunately for us, the sign did not mention that weekends were excluded. We had a not-so-happy experience at the bar when we were charged full price for our drinks. The bartender was blunt, unfriendly and uninterested in our observations that the sign neglected to mention that Happy Hour was not offered on Saturday. The manager was apologetic but had no explanation for the misleading billboard. We were provided with a complimentary desert. The food is fair and expensive. read more

Revival is our very favorite special occasion restaurant thanks to its ambiance, sustainable snout to tail mission and specialty cocktails. It's a large space but is divided into smaller dining areas with clever use of partial walls. Each nook has a slightly different take on the sophisticated speakeasy decor, making it perfect for intimate low-lit dinners. My favorite spots are against the back walls which are covered with vintage mechanical piano rolls. The speciality cocktails are not to be missed. I've tried both their take on some traditional favorites as well as their seasonal specialties and each has been on point. The cocktail menu changes frequently so best not to get too attached to any one drink. I still dream of the divinely fresh and delicious Gin Blossom cocktail of May 2013. Revival is a meat lover's dream. My husband and I both go gaga for the charcuterie plate which is varied and generously portioned. We keep saying that next time we'll just order it and one entree to share as we tend to over order. I think Revival does best with goat and lamb and tend to stick to their goat entrees. I did try a beef steak once which was tasty but not as innovative or memorable as any of their goat dishes I have tried. Service is always attentive and perfectly timed. I know other yelpers have complained about slow service, but that's what I love about Revival. We come here for relaxed evenings in the European way of dining - savoring good food and company over a couple of hours. read more

This restaurant fell short for me, too, especially considering the price of the entrees at $25. I ordered the trout which was fantastic, but my s.o. ordered the ribeye special - it wasn't the best cut and he really had to saw at it with his knife. The service is fantastic. Drinks are tasty and strong, but on the pricey side at $10 a pop. We were here on a Friday night and the place was nowhere near half full. There were a lot of people sitting in the bar area, so maybe they should expand that area and have fewer tables. If it weren't for the high price of the entrees, I would be back, but I would rather go to Rivoli's (a more established restaurant, knocks it out of the park every time for the same pricepoint) or Gather (who's food absolutely blew me away). For the most part, forgettable. This is one of downtown Berkeley's fancier establishments, and not it's best. I'll begin with the really good: the gorgeously prepared and presented swordfish. Perfectly cooked, with the unexpected surprise of nuts in its bed of pinto beans, and very tasty pesto. 5 well-deserved stars. Also good, the service. Our servers in the private room were very attentive. Onto the bad: subpar drinks. I realize this is a controversial statement, but I'll say about it what we say in Spanish: NO TIENEN CHISTE. Not that original, and forgettable--I already did. Honestly, I'd come back for the swordfish, but first go to Comal for a Jack Satan. Also, the dessert was awful. Ladies night is Thursday night. Wear a dress, have a discounted cocktail. The bartender was sharp, friendly and competent. He sort of overcharged us and said that it was because he didn't charge us for everything...but that really didn't work out mathematically so the other bartender gave us our proper discounts. I still cant help but like him. Maybe he was testing the potency of his drinks by our ability to figure out what we had ordered at the end of the night? The cauliflower tumeric spicy appetizer is definitely the way to go; garlic flatbread was not exxxciting but maybe the other ones are. It wasn't joking when it said it would be flat. One of my favorite downtown Berkeley dinner options. Pros: - Always a ton of really tasty menu items. Most recently, my friend and I shared duck and ravioli - probably the best duck I've had in a long while. The portions are just right in that they aren't huge but large enough to feel as though there's plenty of food. - Lots of great bar seating so that it's decently easy to grab a seat for dinner without a reservation. - Full bar with great cocktails. I had my rehearsal dinner in the private dining room at Revival Bar+Kitchen last Friday and it was absolute perfection. When I talked with Chef Amy in advance of the event to discuss the menu, she was absolutely delightful and every time she mentioned a dish they could make, we were going, "Yes! Ooh, we want that too!" The menu they put together for us was delectable: my husband adored the skirt steak, I loved the chicken with apricots, and we all remarked that it was one of the best and lightest cheesecakes we'd ever had. The service was spectular all around, we loved the atmosphere, and everyone couldn't have been happier. Every. Bite. Was. Amazing. We ordered a cocktail made with duck fat washed Legent bourbon and BBQ bitters. Unusual, and dare I say, even bizarre, but after tasting it, I call it pure genius. The duck fat flavor is very subtle, and serves to heighten the molasses tones of the bourbon. Loved it. We also had their charcuterie plate. The chicken liver mousse was to die for. Rich, delicate. The board came with a platter of perfectly crunchy crostini. The accoutrements included miniature pickled peppers and baby daikon (radishes). Perfect acidic balance to the rich cheeses and pate. My partner had the seafood risotto, which he said was hands down the best risotto he's ever had. Tender arborio, succulent seafood, not too rich. Simply amazing. I had the Wagyu beef flatiron. Every single bite was melt-in-yo-mouf delicious. Perfectly marbled, perfectly cooked, hands down best steak I have ever had. Someone needs to give the chef a Michelin star already. I mean it. They just opened Tuesday, so I give little credence to the reviews, but latitude on the service -- which was pretty good, considering. Although this could change if they get super busy (they were almost full at our dinner in primetime Saturday night), one great thing is how much space there is between tables. Hate to sound like I'm my age, but I like being able to hear my friends talk. I like the space much more than when it was Downtown, which always felt like a Berkeley restaurant trying to be in a big city. The food was good and unusual choices. We over-ordered because we wanted to taste a lot. The three of us shared starters: fried baby artichokes (not crisp enough but tasty); asparagus and marrow flat bread wth green garlic, arugula and stuff (fabulous); avocado/local bay shrimp/shaved fennel/hearts of palm salad (delish). I had the goat braised with zatar, fennel, and chard and really liked it; my friends licked the plates of their halibut cheeks with morels/asparagus and the house-made pasts with english peas, mushrooms, etc. One dessert was a let-down (chocolate mousse, we left it and we are all chocolate freaks) but we had more than enough food, especially with the brioche biegnets with four sauces. I didn't think the artisan cocktails were more than average, and I hated my rose (serves me right,but the last time I ordered a rose in an upscale restaurant it was terrific). Probably lucky as I was driving home over the bridge. Will definitely go back, I am so bored with most "sustainable" restaurants right now, this one is better and more interesting than most. read more

While I do miss the handmade potato chips that Downtown offered in the same location, chef Amy Murray does more than make up for things with their delicious menu. All the food is from 100 miles radius - pretty easy to do in the Bay Area - but how would that concept work in some place like Cleveland in the winter? Highly vegan friendly in the kitchen - I was able to eat just as much of a delightful meal as my non-vegan friends. The fries were delicious - as were the house made pickles. I had the pasta with peas and king trumpets - veganized, of course - which was absolutely delicious. The wines by the glass were very nice - and the three of us very much enjoyed our meal. The 12 year old had ordered some kind of steak and mashed potatoes - her mother and I were astonished that she actually finished the whole thing! I have been here several times and each time I become a bigger fan. As a former bartender, what impresses me most is the care that the all-female bar staff take in concocting a well-crafted cocktail. It's the extra touches... from slicing fresh garnishes to taking adequate time to stir the ingredients well before pouring into the glass. The two vodka drinks I have tried have been amazing: the Moscow Mule and the Prickly Pear. The bacon flatbread is my favorite. The charcuterie is supposedly outstanding too, but I'm not a big fan of liver :-P Love the ambiance- reminds you of the prohibition era. The decor is gorgeous: lots of wood, hanging lamps, beautifully designed bar. It's an inviting, open place with great lighting. They've changed their menu and there's nothing decent for vegetarians. They had a vegetarian side dish with harissa and couldn't omit the harissa. I ended up having french fries. There were vegetarian offerings with entrees but they wouldn't let me order it separately. All they had for me were salads, no cooked vegetables. The guy treated me like a joke, offering to heat the salad. Well, good luck to you! There's a lot of restaurant turnover in that area and with your holier-than-thou attitude and paleolithic offerings, I'll give my business elsewhere. read more

Bar First Impressions: Beautiful decor, great to impress a date. If you go to these types of restaurants a lot, you will have a sense of deja vu. $11 for my Green Faerie Gimlet was a fair price. It was also yummers. $5 for fried-to-order chicharones with a salty/spicy seasoning was also quite yummy. They had a really interesting selection of spirits. The atmosphere was quiet on a Sunday afternoon but perfectly pleasant. The staff was polite and knowledgeable. I think this place blurs into all the other similar restaurants that I have been to. However, if you are in the mood for it and in the area, I say go for it. If my cocktail and snack were any indication, you will most likely be very pleased with a meal here. Trust is crucial when going off another's recommendation to a new establishment. I trusted this one. Tonight I implored The Commodore's recommendation for a non-shady drink establishment where I could crash before class after a rough day, and he never fails to deliver. I trust The Commodore's judgment. And so the early evening found me in this place, enjoying some quality alone time with myself, my book, my brew and onion rings. Decor, I give 5 stars: At first, I thought this place was dressed in possible new world/modern Greek revival. Then I watched the wonderful bartenders as they flitted back and forth behind the scenes, making everyone happy. Their outfits suggested Prohibition era, which fits much more nicely with the name chosen for the establishment. I liked it a lot. The lighting is conducive to an intimate atmosphere, lending itself to the quaint music playing in the background. I didn't have to wear my shades inside, even though it was still light outside. This, in of itself, truly endeared me to this place. Food, I give 5 stars: Though I only had one item thus far, the onion rings were uber tasty. You should try them. They went well with my beverage, which was their Oktoberfest selection. Service, I give 5 stars: The bartenders were attentive yet unobtrusive, a hard feat to achieve. Patronage: I observed people from all corners of the globe favouring this establishment; well, those who could afford to anyway. Nonetheless, the prices seem to be worth it. Overall, I had a wonderful experience. It has been over a decade since I went somewhere stag, but this place made it comfortable. I have been coming to Revival ever since I moved to Berkeley. It is located right in the heart of downtown Berkeley, directly in front of BART with bus stop near by...as well as street parking (never recommend in Downtown Berkeley). I have come here for drinks, happy hour, and Brunch. Drinks: The speciality cocktails list always changes but they do have a full bar. My favorite drinks I have had here are a Sazerac and a Side Car. When we went to happy hour, my friend and I have also tried the french fries that were pretty dope..they came with dipping sauce that I completely forgot the ingredients of....but nonetheless was good. Brunch: I got the Bloody Mary and the Shashuka. The shashuka had great flavor and was delicious. The Bloody Mary was alright. Overall, if you are looking for a nicer place to get drinks or food in Berkeley, Revival is the place to go. read more

This place is cute. The drinks here are really good, and the cocktails they serve are quite lovely. It's a nice place to get a bunch of friends together and unwind. I also saw a lot of couples at the bar- it has a low lit, stringed lights romance to it. I'm sure the alcohol helps as well. The cheese plate was excellent as was the bacon flatbread. The brussel sprouts...was good, but for the price, I'd rather just make them myself, but then again I'm a b.sprout connoisseur. I can't wait to come back again! 3.5 stars, technically, but rounding up because of a nice experience overall... A note: the husband used to work with Chef Amy Murray over at Venus, though the staff did not know we were at Revival that evening until after we had settled the tab and paid for our meal. We were in Berkeley to see Flight of the Conchords at the Greek, and took advantage of being in the East Bay to check out the new restaurant, located so conveniently close (under a block?) to the Bart (makes it ever so much easier for us to return in the future). Friday made Day 3 of their opening and yes, it seemed that the waitstaff was still trying to find their stride (our server painstakingly explained to us that we were to have a 'team service', with no less than 3 different servers bringing us different things...), and after an initial longish wait for someone to take our orders, service was just fine. To start, we ordered cocktails: I chose the Farmer Jane (see farmerjane.org): bourbon, orange tea liquor, strawberry, lemon, honey, mint, soda - well balanced, light & refreshing. Not too sweet. The husband ordered the Spring Fling (gin, basil & ginger with lime), which he pronounced delicious; and the Bijou (chartruese, sweet vermouth, orange bitters), which he indicated was good but extremely potent. The meal was paced very nicely - we had: Avocado, local bay shrimp, shaved fennel & fresh hearts of palm with tarragon vinaigrette - a delicious, light & refreshing dish whose subtle flavours were in beautiful balance with each other. "Basket of Bread" veal sweetbreads with crispy onions, bread & butter pickles & curry aioli: this turned out to be a fried dish - the sweetbreads were perfectly cooked, but I wished that the fried onions would have been lighter - they came coated with a hard cornmeal crust that overwhelmed the taste of onion. The pickles brought some much-needed acid and the curry aioli a nice complement. (Here was an instance where I felt the staff or the menu could have described this dish better - it was in essence an entire fried basket - not apparent from the description.) House-made pasta with english peas, king trumpet mushrooms, pea shoots and grana pandano - another exquisite springtime dish where the flavours of each ingredient stood out beautifully but also harmonized exceptionally well. This dish was one of the best pasta dishes we've tasted. Halibut cheeks with morels, asparagus & roasted marble potatoes with mint pesto: the fish was a bit overcooked but had great flavour, the potatoes, morels (also fried) and asparagus well-cooked but a tad salty. I confess that I could barely taste the mint pesto and overall the dish was a bit too greasy. We ordered the Beignets with 4 sauces (alas, I can't remember them all - caramel, chocolate, berry and a creme fraiche?) - think perhaps we could have used less sauce, but the brown sugar ice cream & ginger crumble was a fantastic pairing. I look forward to visiting in the future and to Revival finding its stride. It has huge promise now. read more

.... so this was such a pleasant surprise! We parked early for The Berkeley Repertory Theater, for Angels in America, and thought we'd better get something to eat before that marathon. So, a little unsure where to go (we were saving our Angeline's appetite for dinner) we came up to the front door of Revival. There, we saw a pleasant young woman offering samples of French Toast. OK, we'll bite ..... mmmmmmmm. Goooood! She easily convinced us to make this our pre-show coffee place. The menu teased us with the idea of making this our brunch place. So we did. We started with an order of amazing Beignets. Now, I have had New Mexico Sopapillas, and Beignets at Cafe du Nord in New Orleans, but have never had more perfect pillows of deep fried heaven. They deliver them with Rhubarb Jame, but I opted for minimal powdered sugar, and my favorite... honey. These Beignets, and an cappuccino, are well worth the stop, all on their own. For our brunch entre we ordered two kinds of Benedict.... the Fried Green Tomato Eggs Benedict, and the Fried Chicken Eggs Benedict. We each traded one half away and ended up with an Eggs Benedict Combo of the two! That was the very best of both worlds! Put that on the menu! We loved them. The quality and flavors of this brunch were just the right ticket to keep us satisfied for the duration of the show. One more Cappuccino (thanks Yelp!) and we were on our way. But, believe me, we'll be back. Then there will be more to tell, about the enticing dinner menu and welcoming bar atmosphere. BTW, when I told my sister, who visits Berkeley a lot, about Revival she told me, excitedly, "Oh, yeah, we love Revival, we eat there every time we go to Berkeley Rep!" The pastry chef, Andrea Johnson, is at it again. Here desserts are rich, inventive, and wonderfully executed. Go check out the chocolate panna cotta (with a textbook perfect texture) and the sorbets. Her peach sorbet (served with the panna cotta) and her lemon verbena sorbet (served with a peach mousse) are really wonderful. Add an espresso or glass of dessert wine and you have the perfect end to your evening.the last two times I've been, I've sat at the bar and the service has been exceptional. read more

Quality: Never had dinner here, however I went to their bar. It's definitely on the classier end. Want anything trashier (or more loud) go to Thalassa, or god forbid Kips. This place is great. As a student nearby I've always walked by here but never went in until I was free from the confines of academia. After a long day, my friends and I walked here for a quick drink. We were greeted warmly by the charming bartender Obi. He immediately made conversation and gave us water before we even knew what we wanted. Obi was down to earth and made us feel welcome at his bar. He served us our Negroni's, which were spectacular and I highly recommend, and sent us on our merry way. Obi singlehandedly made our party returning customers as we are looking forward to coming here for dinner and drinks soon! read more

In the few years that I have been eating here there has been ONLY 1 instance when I had a complaint, and I did not tell them. That is a great track record! The food is excellent, the staff friendly and professional, and the food is excellent... did I say that? Worth the repeated visit. read more

Fun, friendly, and tasty. There were 8 of us plus a two year old. We had advised the of a change to our # of people hours before (and it was a SLOW rainy Sunday) but the table was not ready when we arrived. It was 5:00- early. They had time to adjust. We also had to ask a few people to get a high chair for the little one. Service was good but not fast. The Glogg is divine-- hot spiced wine done right. The servings were pretty good sizes. Surprisingly the fish stew, although really testy, only had one shrimp. We had to ask for bread to soak up the delicious sauce/soup/goodness ,and that took way too long to receive. The pork chop was a huge double chop, and the other entrees looked good too. Overall we were happy. The background music was oldies and at just the right sound level to add to the environment but we could still talk. (Someone else mentioned the sticky floor-- weirdly I noticed that too. There were two of us last night, on a Friday night, and we got in right away at around 730, which was fantastic! Great atmosphere and super friendly and great staff. My friend and I split a few dishes, the fig salad, the pork belly, and the roasted cauliflower. Incredibly delicious dishes. The cauliflower has this yummy cashew curry sauce. The pork belly is over couscous. And the fig salad was fresh and delicious. I will definitely be coming back! read more

We hosted a intimate gathering of 20 family members in the private room. Amy, the owner, was super helpful in organizing the menu and the room arrangement. The food was excellent, the staff were wonderful, the AV set up worked great and good time was had by all! Thank you team Revival! read more
