Both had been prepped and cooked to their best. And the cocktails? The mixologist is a master - blended very well and very creative in flavors and presentation. Difficult to find as the entrance wasn't obvious. I felt a bit judged w my over the top casual ripped jeans but was still seated. The menu was simple yet decadently sprinkled with local original flare. My most mind blowing experience with a drink was with the twin peaks. I ordered the low country and it was fresh to order! There are many reasons why people go to a restaurant. Two of my primary ones are places that do things that I can not do at home, and places that simply do things better than anyone else. Revival is a great example of both. I ordered the she crab soup as an appetizer. This is a common dish down south but it is usually very gummy and lacking in flavor. Revival simply makes the best she crab soup I have ever had. It is very flavorful yet light. You feel as if you have had something rich and decadent, without that I ate too much feeling. Next I ordered the low country pirlou. WOW!! This is also a dish that is fairly common, but often just a mishmash of whatever was left over in the kitchen with a heavy sauce. Revival serves theirs with abundant seafood (shrimp, lobster, grouper). Everything is perfectly cooked. The shrimp for instance was cooked through but not tough. It tasted like it was butter poached, but without that oversaturated feeling you can sometimes get with these dishes. The rice was cooked through but did not get mushy in the sauce. Lastly the black garlic and squid ink added just enough interest to make it a near perfect dish. read more

The crab cakes however weren't what I expected. They were tiny but served on a really cute dish. My bartender Chris was super nice and answered all questions thrown his way. We had a most pleasant experience at Revival last evening. First of all the menu has been updated---not just new dishes since our last visit, but tweaks to the most popular dishes. The Shrimp and Grits which formerly had black rice as a component now has blue corn grits on the plate. The Pirlou entree also has been updated. Two of the diners were very happy with these dishes! My entree of Roasted Halibut on a plate with pureed carrots, beets, and squash was nicely prepared, moist, and flavorful. We ended the meal with a slice of pecan pie---a very Southern touch! We had dinner at Revival on a Friday night during a quick weekend trip to Charleston, and it was an all-around outstanding experience. The space is modern, bright and has beautiful ambience. Our server, Christopher, was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and efficient, and to our surprise, presented us with a classy anniversary card signed by the staff, which had been noted on our online reservation! When they did not know how to make my preferred bourbon cocktail (Black Manhattan) Christopher explained that he also had bartending skills and would love to know how and try to make them, and he did a great job! We had the she-crab soup and crab cake appetizers and pirlou and scallop entrees, and all were excellent. The key lime pie dessert was also a winner. The ahi tuna appetizer was the most amazing combination of food I've ever put in my mouth! Have you ever had a serving of food that is so good, you eat it very slowly so the flavors won't end? I love when new seafood restaurants open in Charleston because it usually means they try really hard to stand out and give a great experience, and that has never been more true than with Revival (ok, it's been open for quite some time but it's relatively new). It is sort of tucked away within the hotel such that you have to navigate a weird maze to get to the actual restaurant, but don't let that deter you from coming here! The food is fantastic. Some of the best fish I have ever had. The trigger fish is my favorite, but everything we had was great, including the oysters (although, I'd probably step across the street for oysters to save $$ in the future). What really made this place stand out was the cocktails though. Super creative, super good, and each cocktail is served in a unique glass. One I got was served in a lightbulb - pretty wild! The portion of this horrible establishments food is incredibly small especially for the duck that tastes like dog food. Everything sucked besides the Mac and cheese and Brussel sprouts. The service was ok but the waiter didn't serve me win. The ambiance was alright but when I went to the men's bathroom the color of the light was red which me go crazy therefor the ambiance was alright. My husband and I have eaten here twice. The first visit was delicious! We thought it would become one of our favorites. Staff is wonderful and ambience is lovely. Swordfish and the duck were stellar. The second time left a lot to be desired and I can only imagine they had an "off" day as our first visit was so positive. Both of our courses were improperly cooked and not seasoned well. The dessert was inedible for me that day also. I do believe there are better options in the area, however, it was nice to try something new and believe it was worth a visit. UPDATE: We went on CHS restaurant week and wow how this has fallen so rapidly. We could only pick from the restaurant week menu which was limited to 3 apps 3 entrees and two desserts. It took two hours to go through these simple courses. The entrees were warm at best. The wonderful trifle dessert was watery an inedible. After complaining, all I was told was sorry. $200 wasted. I hate posting bad reviews but Revival has failed. OLD: Revival is a great new addition to the CHS scene. The space is bright, comfortable and modern. From the beginning, everyone was very welcoming and pleasant. The chopped salad and melon plate was spot on. The only slight detractor was the prosciutto was slightly dried out. The entrees and cocktails were the standouts. Especially delicious is the Pirlou and Forbidden Shrimp and Grits. Mac and cheese is interesting and was a hit. I can't believe this place is running so smoothly and at such high quality after one month! Loved the ambiance-I labeled it as classy cozy". Service was some of the best we've had in Charleston with great explanations and stories behind the food. The food was equally as exceptional. I had the shrimp and grits-full of flavor and a perfect portion of shrimp. My date enjoyed the seafood medley of Low Country Pirlou, complemented with the taste of Carolina Gold. Both dishes were amazing and we would order them again. Beautiful in every way. Spotless space, romantically dim lighting, good spacing between tables for distancing and privacy. We enjoyed the She crab soup -- very delicious with huge chunks of sweet crabmeat. The World Fair Chopped Salad topped with a Parmesan wafer was fresh and flavorful! Spinach was lightly sautéed to perfection with delicious roasted garlic. A Short rib special was probably too rich for me but so good atop perfectly seasoned grits. My only criticism is of the fingerling potatoes, which were over salted. We splurged on dessert and found the Bread pudding also delicious. Super popular restaurant in a nice hotel downtown Charleston, these places can be kind of intimidating to go to, but I'm so glad we finally tried this place! The staff was super nice and the food was amazing. Got the duck confit risotto and it was so good! The creme brûlée dessert really stole the show though! This place is so so delicious. We had the she crab soup and crab cakes as an appetizer. The crab cakes are quite literally 100% crab. And the soup is perfect. I had the lowcountry pirlou and it was so delicious. We also ordered the grouper and it was also amazing. I can't decide which I liked better. I get the concept, Revival of local/earthy/historic ingredient incorporated to create some spectacular dishes. I read a few review about Revival and I am going to steal from a few as I have mixed feeling about this place, and some of my thoughts have been captured in several other reviews. 1st, service was exceptional - hard to find in these trying times of mass exodus from jobs. Finding help is tough, I get it. Revival seems to have found a good staff for the front end. 2nd, Yea, I like the crazy Gorilla, not sure how he fits in with some of the other finer art work hanging on the walls, but I like that he was out of place, but seemingly not. 3rd, the presentation of the food was excellent. However, this is where it gets a bit tricky, I agree with another commenter, as someone who used to work in the restaurant business in the northeast, if you said fresh or catch of the day, it was literally caught and prepared that day, and never frozen, that said, maybe you had it flown in that day, so I won't make any assumptions but will go by my taste buds. I agree with another review - Yes, you will get good food here, and yes it will be pricy (especially at $16 a glass ($76 a bottle) of Solano PN which would go for $23-27 a bottle in any wine store. I get it, not much different from most other restaurants. But overall, the food did not "wow" me/us (6) like other experiences we've had in Chucktown or other "food mecca's." The food needed a little something more to dazzle the tastebuds. Saying that the she-crab soup was... good, the "fresh catch of the Day" flounder with stuffed crab special was... good. The LC Perlou - stock was a little bland - garlic aioli, local rice - nice touch. The oysters - please do not mess with my raw oysters. seemed like half of oyster body was missing, don't put stuff on them to cover them up. Just clean them well, put them on ice, and let me do the dressing. Table sides, hmmm, let me tell you, when you charge the table $8 for for some tiny slices of fingerling potatoes (about three whole tiny potatoes in all) make sure there is enough for the whole table to get a reasonable portion. Overall, I would not rush back here nor bring my out of town friends to this place. That right there, if other people feel the same, should be enough for a chef to take a step back and ask themselves some tough questions if they want to really sustain a "Revival" in the local food scene. read more

When I showed him the bread plate was dirty with a large spot of crusted food, he replaced it efficiently but without apology, as if such things are to be expected. The food was only just average. The big signature dish, Seafood Pirlou, was bland, with dried out lobster claw, which should have been sweet, moist, and fresh. This place had a pretty good environment. A couple of downsides was if you want the oysters, make sure you ask for no horseradish because they'll just put it on them directly if you don't say no. "She Crab" soup? OMG, what a discovery for this poor TEXAS boy. Jumbo lump crab in a creamy soup mixture - I have no words to describe the taste sensation I enjoyed. My wife and I had yet another huge meal for lunch, and neither one of us was prepared to eat an early dinner, but we had tickets to a show with doors opening at 7pm. So we split an appetizer of She Crab soup and Low Country Pirlou for an entree. The Pirlou was equally delicious and was chocked full of lobster, crab, shrimp, and saffron butter. Sometimes restaurants skimp on expensive ingredients - that was not the case here. Just glad we split this dish or a lot of good food would have gone to waste. My husband and I came here 2 years ago on the night we got engaged. It is a very special place to us. We came back to Charleston to get married and chose to come back to Revival to celebrate our wedding. Our waiter, Max, did everything to make our night not special. First, he asked for my ID but not my husbands. I'm in my 30s btw. Because there are so many 20 year olds out having a romantic evening with their husband ordering $20 glasses of cab, right? We don't care if you card us, but if you're going to card us, just card us both. The food is amazing. Revival has the best filet in Charleston and it's cooked perfectly. They have the best she crab soup in town with large pieces of lump crab in the soup. Oysters are wonderful. When it came time for the bill, our waiter plopped it down right in front of my husband (assuming he was paying). My husband handed it across the table to me since I had the wallet. I put the card on top and set it on my side of the table. The waiter took it ran the card and came back and plopped it in front of my husband AGAIN! I have never been so disrespected while trying to have a romantic night out with my spouse. This was our wedding dinner! He knew this because we told him, yet he did nothing to make the night special and quite honestly ruined our night. I must say, everyone aside from our server was great and even congratulated us. This modern southern eatery was a great discovery. Located in The Vendue Inn, this newly renovated space is open and comfortable. The service was friendly.
