A hidden gem that's easy to miss, this place is a solid lunch option if you're looking to get away from the Rush work crowd that you'll almost always see at Park Tavern or roaming around on Taylor street. This place isn't 100 run-in free, but most of the time you're fine. The indoor area can get super crowded and is generally packed at lunch time. They have a really large back patio area, which is lovely during Spring, Summer, and Fall. It's fairly quiet and private. They now serve alcohol on the patio.They have lots of large tables so I would imagine happy hour is pretty fun here. The food is solid and reasonably priced. I typically get the lunch dishes which come with your standard rice and beans. The salsa is fabulous - perfect amount of heat and I typically get a couple of servings to pour over everything. It was served in a large water glass. I had the Avocado Eggs ( left, featured side of the menu, may not have name just right). It is poached eggs, avocado, ham, and holindaise sauce on an english muffin. Eggs were perfect, good amount of avocado. Very yummy. It was served with potatoes and a small side salad. After hearing good things about Angel's, we went with a friend for brunch last weekend. We opted to sit outside and soak up the warm Chicago weather. Our waitress was over-the-top friendly. She invited us to check out the breakfast buffet before committing to our brunch picks (we all settled on the buffet), and was prompt with tortillas for the table, chips and beverages. I had a margarita (it wasn't the best margarita I've ever had, but for the price, I was perfectly happy to sip a cool concoction on a patio), and the guys I was with split a bucket of beer. Do the brunch buffet on Sundays. I didn't, and I had regrets. For only $25 per person, the brunch buffet includes some of the dishes that are already on the menu, like chilaquiles and coconut crusted French toast, which were the two dishes I could not decide between! I ordered the chilaquiles with chicken. It was okay, but I've had better chilaquiles, and it seems that this dish is prepared completely different everywhere I've gone. I prefer this dish with more crisp tortilla chips instead of layers of tortillas that become soggy under the weight of the salsa. The salsa was good, but I would have preferred something with a bit more spice. My friend had the brunch buffet, thank goodness, so I got to try some bites of the coconut French toast which was amazing! The simplicity of French toast coated in coconut is not underrated. The atmosphere is casual, and no reservations are needed. The service is friendly and accommodating. A homeless woman came into the restaurant and was seated on the other side of the dining room, and it appeared that an employee gave her a meal. It's nice to see business owners being kind to locals that are less fortunate. On the flip side, prior to noticing the woman, I noticed the restaurant suddenly smelled like fecal matter. It was very strong, the kind of smell that gets in your nose and ruins whatever you're eating. The smell came and went quickly, upon the woman's entrance and exit. I thought that maybe they were having plumbing issues, but the smell was much stronger than that. She also approached my friend at the buffet and asked her to buy her a beverage. An employee did confront the woman and told her that she cannot ask the customers for anything. I can't believe the number of times I had planned to go to Angle's before finally making the stop today for lunch. Even when lived east of the loop I had spotted this place via yelp and tried making it out. Sometimes the friends I was going with wouldn't want to go. Other times it was mysteriously closed, even during normal operating hours. IDK, somehow it just never worked out. But anyway, today I was finally able to go. So after all that build up and drama... I was a bit disappointed. I mean... it wasn't bad. Not at all. But it wasn't what I was hoping for either. So I ordered a veggie burrito and asked what was in it. See, at some places a veggie burrito means a normal burrito like beans, lettuce, cheese, sour cream, guac, etc. But at other places, they take our all the burrito goodness and assume vegetarians only eat vegetables... or something. So this place had a grilled veggies I'm the burrito. So I'm like, what's in it and the guys says mushrooms, onions, and green peppers. So I'm like, no green peppers... but make sure there's lettuce, tomato, etc. Anyway, you usually can't mess with the way a place does their food. In my experience that's risky. So I'm going with the flowing and the burrito comes and ends up having to tons of zucchini. Argh... that's my least favorite grilled veggie of all. The guys apologized about not mentioning this before... but what're you gonna do. So anyway, it was an OK burrito, but not really my style. I also took a bite of the enchilada with tomatillo sauce and it was just OK as well. So anyway, it was worth a shot. Look, the food was decent and service was good and all. I don't even know where to start, I feel like the place had good intentions but still bad service. Waiter started off nice, but he brought back room temperature tea and I had to ask him twice for water. We didn't have any silverware had to ask for that. So when the food came it was barely hot it was warm but not hot, no butter for the pancakes then he brought out freezing cold syrup. When I asked why was the the syrup cold he said they don't warm up the syrup. I've never heard of freezing cold syrup on your pancakes. Anywho, since the food was mediocre we rushed to eat and was ready to go. The waiter took forever and a day to bring the check. At that point I was so fed up and irritated. Definitely won't be back, they were not understaffed because it was two other people in the restaurant so I can't use that as an excuse. It was just bad and I won't be back. read more

I've been to Ricano's several times now and I'll keep coming back. The menu is huge and the food is good. My friend had the tortilla soup, which she said was amazing, and the tamales, which she said were "meh." Everything I've ordered there has been delicious. One star lost for the service this visit. We were the only table but we still had to get up to ask the waitress for things and my order was incorrect. Service has been fine during my past visits. Location: Jackson/Ashland, west side of street. I've driven by this spot about 1,000x, and it's just on one of those busy streets where you don't stop to think about it. I encourage y'all to do so. Easy metered parking, for some extra incentive. My choice: Omelette with chihuahua cheese (GREAT in omelettes!), mushrooms, sausage and spinach. Fluffy and flavorful, with a little side salad + vinegarette, and some killer breakfast potatoes sauteed in red and green peppers. Also, served with toast. All of this for approximately $8. Cash that in, mamacita...I'm sick of paying $15 for bad omelettes smushed in between cranky condo dwellers. THIS really is an angel! His choice: Cesina (aged beef) with mole covered eggs, refried beans and rice. All was gone, so I'll take this as a satisfactory meal. Hot, rich coffees. $2/each. Other items of interest on the breakfast menu: banana nut stuffed pancakes, chocolate chip pancakes, many varieties of eggs benedict, many Mexican specialties (huevos rancheros, etc). Truly, for the price point and the offerings...this is a great breakfast spot very near the West Loop/Little Italy/Near West Side. And frankly, the options are limited, so check it out. But here, at Angel's I cannot, and I mean *cannot* get away from the chilaquiles con mole. I came and conquered (or was conquered, as a matter of fact) three times. Each defeat tasted better than any victory, and I have no regret. Simply because Angel's chilaquiles are the best I have ever had in my life, no kidding. I know you really don't have to believe me, and that's ok. But seriously - it's perfect. Tortillas, eggs, a smoky mole, mild and deliciously spicy, rice, frijoles and a couple of fixings. Enough food for two meals. Eight dollars. $8. I am day-dreaming about them on a daily basis. You want more? Here's more! You can have your chilaquiles two other ways - with tomatillo salsa or "regular", if you are on the vanilla side of life (no shame though). Coffee is nice, hot and tasty. Sundays feature unlimited brunch buffer for a whooping $12. For Easter, it included chilaquiles (hehehe), chicken mole, pork in green salsa, tamales, nutty French toast and banana pecans pancakes, among other things. No, it's not a dream. Yes, it was dreamy good. Parking is a breeze. There is no wait. Read: no line. NO LINE. There is a huge PATIO. Lots of flowers in the summer. This was one of Chicago's secrets in terms of breakfast places - thank you Yelp! When I want breakfast, I want it now and not after some ridiculous wait. Enter, Angels (Which by the way, serves breakfast all day long). Angels is a quaint restaurant that has a minimal decor but with bright paintings on the wall. It's not about the ambiance, but about their delicious food. First thing I like: it is a family owned and run restaurant. They really do care about their service and were excellent from soup to nuts. When they found out it was our first time there, they sent a complimentary delicious dessert. I was impressed! The food was good and cheap. Chips and Salsa - muy bueno. I had the combo with eggs and pancakes which hit the spot. It also didn't seem greasy like some of the other breakfast/diner spots. My boyfriend had the chorizo eggs and he liked them a lot. There was a lot of food and we left full (but not in the I-just-gained-five-pounds feeling). I was just amazed by their prices too. However, Angels is only always consistent with service or the food. One time it took almost 45 minutes to get our food and it was only warm. This is why it's 3-3.5 and not a 4. We definitely will be back for breakfast and to try more on their menu. This place has the potential to be really good and a regular spot - especially if they are more consistent. Best damn chilaquiles we've ever had! The mole sauce served on top of that luscious mixture of tortillas, eggs, and sauteed vegetables was smoky, spicy and well balanced. This is a winning dish amongst a menu that seems to do quite a lot right for a good price. You really do get a great value here. If you tend to have a hard time figuring out what to order at a place, come here for Sunday Brunch. For $12 you get unlimited amounts from a buffet line (think about 8 different things on order- both sweet and savory), eggs made your way, bottomless coffee, and the homemade juice of the day. While we opted for entree-style ordering, simply because we are trying our best to limit the quantity of food we are eating (buffets = busted waste lines, for me), we still left completely satisfied and looking forward to coming back again. The other thing we sampled was the banana nut pancakes- which had about two full bananas thinly sliced on top with a white chocolate drizzle and candied walnuts. This tall stack of three fluffy pancakes were only $8.00 and were delicious. You know how some people just feel like home to you? You can't help feeling that they will always be there for you and you feel completely comfortable in their presence? Well, if you could make a place like that kind of person, it would be Angel's. This is the same Angel's that was previously in Andersonville on Clark Street. I went there for about 7 years and had the best experiences there. Slowly, that neighborhood became more and more pricey and pushed out all of the businesses that had been there forever. Angel's closed and I felt like I was in mourning. Fast forward a little over a year and while driving to a work conference this Tuesday, I notice while at a stop light the Angel's with the fluorescent boy angel in the window. I was instantly filled with elation. It must be the same place, I thought! I just ate at the new Angel's. It's in a great location now, especially if you want to grab a bite to eat before seeing a band at Epiphany (it's right across the street from the church on the corner of Ashland and Jackson). The environment is so cozy with original art on the walls and the food is authentic and towards gourmet Mexican food. Tons of great favorites there with meat options or the option to leave it off if you're a vegetarian. The chips are some of the greatest I've ever had and they are in the process of getting their liquor license. They serve both dinner and brunch on the weekends and will have an outdoor patio open in the summer. The food is great at Angel's-great sized portions and very fresh and flavorful but I can't underestimate also how much I just love all of the great guys that work there. This place is the BOMB. It's the rice, refried beans, saucy Mexican combo plate stuff of dreams! I love that they let you mix and match sauces and Meats with the enchiladas. The mole is my favorite. We actually didn't sit outside because it became too windy and cool, but the patio is behind the restaurant for those who don't like dining several feet from a busy street, such as myself. I had the eggs florentine ($7), my absolute favorite. My boyfriend ordered the breakfast tostadas ($8) and we shared a bowl of guacamole ($6). The menu doesn't state that the breakfast dishes come with sides, but they do! They come with a dark green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and homefries. The guacamole was filling, although I like mine with a little more lime juice and red onion. David thought it was delicious though. I'm just nitpicking. Angel's had horchata available which I regret not ordering. The cost of two people ordering two very filling and good entrees, one appetizer, and soda came to ~$22. That's pretty great for this neighborhood! I think Angel's is a very pleasant find, especially with their outdoor patio. Breakfast should be an easy experience, because I can't take that much before coffee. And here at Angel's, everything is low key and food is good and low price. Please know that this is not a Bongo room type of place where you order stuffed french toast with bananas and nutella. Our table got a salmon bennedict, an avocado bennedict and an Angel's Special eggs. Three coffees and 1 milk later, the check was $33. Most importantly, we all loved our food! The potatoes are plentiful and sauteed with real bell peppers and onions. The eggs were poached right, and the scramble had chunks of zuchini and mushrooms in it. Lots of avaocado in my avo bennedict. Coffee refill was frequent and because the place was small, service is quick. Breakfast buffet is a good deal at $12 for french toast, fruit, chilaquiles in addition to your choice of egg dish (eggs florentine, eggs benedict and a cheese omelet which looked a bit sad honestly), coffee and juice. Service was ok as others have mentioned and Miss Lady got a bit too close to my face multiple times with hot plates, coffee pots, etc. Watch it sucka! ;) The water service was on point though. After reading the reviews for this place, we were super excited to try this place. We visited this place on a Saturday for brunch. Upon entering, we were told to sit wherever we liked. Starting at this point is where service started to go downhill. It took a while before we were even handed a menu. Another 10 minutes later, we were finally asked for our drink and food orders. I ordered chilaquiles based on what i heard our server tell another table and my husband ordered the chicken enchiladas with green sauce. I did not add a protein to the chilaquiles because I was fine with the scrambled eggs that it came with. After waiting another 15-20 minutes, we received our food. We unfortunately did not receive any refills on coffee because they had to brew another pot. My husband's enchiladas were decent. He requested the green, spicy sauce and it was definitely spicy. The chicken had a good flavor. My chilaquiles were a HUGE disappointment. I literally thought they forgot to put the scrambled eggs on there because there were no discernible eggs. I asked the waitress for a side of scrambled eggs, but they never came. After taking a few bites, I tasted what seemed to be an egg. Upon reexamination, i found a few small pieces of eggs. Definitely not a nice scramble that I am accustomed to in chilaquiles. A second cup of coffee took about 30 minutes and closing our bill took another 20. Maybe we came on an off day, but I am not jumping at the chance to go back. read more

Went here before a Bull's game and it was, well, it was freezing cold. Everyone dining at the restaurant had their coats on, it was so cold. Our server was OK; I ordered the avocado benedict which was pretty good, and the orange juice was tasty. My friends paid via cards (splitting wasn't an issue which was great) and I paid in cash - when we asked for change for my $20 bill she gave me $15...which I had to count a few times (this got fixed but a good thing to note - make sure you cout your change, and you should at every place, just saying). I don't live in the area anymore and while the food was okay, the decor was cute (lots of little paintings and skulls), i don't think I'll be back unless they start using fans - when we stood up we finally got some of the heat that was blowing down from vents on the ceilings. A short car ride from Wicker Park, we popped into Angel's and there was no one in there! This might make some people wary, but in light of said waiting feelings, we were glad to be seated immediately. We ordered two Bloody Marys, and here's where they lose that extra star. The Marys were kind of thick and sweet, obviously not their specialty. After much contemplation I went with the chilaquiles and the bf had the chorizo eggs, both with beans and rice. Moving from Andersonville to our current, restaurant-starved Near West Side 'hood, I was thrilled to notice that Angel's seemed to have followed us, complete with a lovely outdoor patio. While the menu may not wow you, the food is tasty and the service is friendly. I hope business is more brisk for breakfast and lunch, because we had the space to ourselves for dinner. OMG.. This place is awesome. Hubby took me here for breakfast on a Saturday morning. We needed to kill time before my sons basketball game at Whitney Young High School.. (Go Dolphins). Normally my stomach can not handle spicy mexican foods. So I order an easy eggs and toast breakfast.. Hubby ordered the Chorizo scrambled eggs. With much resistance I tried them after he persisted. They were amazing.. I actually begged him to switch meals with me, and eventually he did. They were not spicy at all, and it was very light to eat. The portions were good size too. I tried the same scramble egg meal at another Mexican Restaurant a week later thinking it would be the same, and NOPE not even close. We started off with some guac, which was fantastic. Their chips are amazing as well! Fresh tortilla chips ftw. I ordered some grilled veggie enchiladas with beans and rice. Mmmm, I love cheese and I love grilled vegetables! It was smothered in cheese and tomatillo sauce. Everyone else enjoyed their entrees as well. The food here tasted healthy - it didn't taste like grease laden-midnight burrito joint-type of food. It tasted fresh and vibrant, and you didn't feel like you were riding the grease train to Big Butt land. It was simply good food. We finished the meal off (the highlight of the meal, omg) flan! It was the most delicious flan I have ever tasted. It was creamy and sweet - it was nested in a hot out of the fryer tortilla shell and topped with whipped cream and strawberries. I had to be rolled down the street, but it was an amazing night. We'll definitely be back. read more
