This place is a sleeper hit. I recommend the Salt and Pepper Fish Fillet first and foremost. Well seasoned, crispy battered fish filets with stir fried peppers and onions. So good' Other items we loved were Happy Family (mixed protein and veggies in a brown sauce) and sautéed green beans. Yes! Yes! Yes! An instant classic and a safe go-to Taiwanese cuisine spot that has already made it on my list of good eats. Being new to Austin, I am slowly but surely going to recalibrate and re-arrange my internal menu of restaurants that have good food. Its always hard to find new spots to eat and call a regular spot, but stumbling upon this very unassuming restaurant was the highlight of my day. Very good service and even better food, the Sichuan Beef Noodle Soup I ordered was bomb! The soup was packed to the brim with oodles and boodles of noodles along with beef that would fall apart in my mouth instantly. Not too spicy, but jam packed full of flavor, I'm glad I was sold on this from the many images here on Yelp of the dish. We discovered Rice Bowl Cafe a few years ago based on a recommendation from our neighbors and they quickly became one of our favorites. The staff is always friendly and courteous, delivery is super fast, portions are plentiful (pics are from a delivery order after we already ate some), and most importantly the food is exceptional!!!! I've never had a dish here that I didn't love. The Short: There's a reason Rice Bowl is famous for their Roast Beef Rolls. They are absolutely delicious!! I came here twice, once for dinner and once for lunch. For dinner, I had the Szechuan Fish and the Combination Lo Mein. Granted it was my first time here and I didn't know what dishes to order, but the meal wasn't very memorable. Both dishes were pretty good, but what stuck out was that the tofu in the Szechuan Fish was hard tofu so it didn't absorb much of the flavors and didn't have a pleasant texture. But I'm writing this review for their Roast Beef Rolls and their Szechuan Beef Noodle Soup. Their Roast Beef Rolls is one of the best appetizers I've ever had. This dish is essentially Chinese roast beef marbled with fat, Hoisin sauce, a piece of lettuce, and red onion all wrapped in a green onion pancake. It sounds delicious, and super filling, and that's exactly what it is. You get the sweetness from the Hoisin Sauce, the savory-ness from the roast beef, and the freshness from the lettuce and red onion. If that's not comfort food-y enough, the Green Onion Pancake is fried well and packs bread-y substance. You'll want to mop up everything on your plate. Throughout my meal, I can see a plate of the Roast Beef Rolls at just about every table around me. This is the real deal here, people. The Szechuan Beef Noodle Soup isn't just an average dish either. Unless you're Michael Phelps, the quantity itself is enough for two people to share. The noodles are thick, and you can cut the beef in two just by pinching them with your chopsticks. Definitely in my top three beef noodle soups I've had. It pains me that I haven't tried their Three Cup Chicken. Gotta go back! ======== EDIT ======== Finally went back for their Three Cup Chicken. So good so good so good and definitely deserves the hype. The dish looks simple as it is a small pot of pieces of chicken covered in a sauce. However, every single piece was tender and soft. Many pieces are also layered with chicken fat, which aids in the absorption of the sauce and enhances the flavor 10-fold. I can see myself getting this every time I come. Rice Bowl is most definitely one of the better Chinese restaurants in the Austin area! I came here seeking a good rejuvenating Chinese meal after pounding myself on final exams. I scouted out this place in an obscure corner in Chinatown after hearing good feedback from friends. It's located across the street from the Chinatown center where MT Supermarket is, in its own (deserted) shopping center. The place is nice for a Chinese restaurant and has a modern feel to it, unlike most other Chinese restaurants. I came in about a couple weeks before Christmas and there was a nice big Christmas tree right by the entrance. The place had quite a crowd for a Thursday night and the wait staff was very welcoming. The crowd was a mix of Austin workers and residents, as well as students. You could get an idea of the authenticity of this restaurant by seeing the majority of students dining here being Asian; nice to get away from the usual CoCo's right by campus. I ordered the Three-Cup Chicken and man, was this the bomb! Maybe they should change the name to "Five-Cup Chicken" because it came with so much food! The dish came out in a hot clay pot and was full of spices such as basil, ginger, and peppers. The chicken was cooked to a perfect crisp and was seared in the savory sauce, all burning hot to the touch. I could only finish about half of the dish and had to take the rest home since it was so much. My only complaint is that the rice they gave with the dish was only enough to eat with the portion of the dish that I ate at the restaurant. Had I possessed a bigger appetite and ate the whole pot, more rice would have been necessary and I believe they charge for extra rice. I also tried the green onion pancake as an appetizer and these were very good as well. One order was around $3 and it came with about 8 slices of pancake, which was also plenty. Again I only ate about half so that i could save room for the Five, I mean Three Cup Chicken. The pancake was baked to a perfect golden crisp and went well with the sauce (a derivative of soy sauce?). Not to mention, the dinner portion came with complimentary fried wonton skin chips. These are so addicting and I could eat these all day with the sweet and sour sauce they came with. It's the equivalent of tortilla chips in a Mexican restaurant - you can't stop eating them and you're eagerly awaiting until your entree comes out so that you don't get full off of these munchies. I would definitely recommend Rice Bowl as a go-to Chinese restaurant for when you need your regular fix of Chinese food (like I do, coming from Houston), or when you have guests in town who would like to eat Chinese. You get a huge amount of food at a reasonable price- pretty rare to find in the Austin oriental food scene. read more

We also had the salt and pepper squid combination platter! It had sautéed onions and jalapeños! Delish! Not too greasy. The orange chicken was average for us. Nothing special. The moo shu was meaty. Rice Bowl Cafe has become a staple in our house. When we say "want take out?" Our first thought is immediately here and then we struggle to come up with better alternatives. With warm and wonderful service, their team brings a comfort to Chinese/Taiwanese food that I haven't felt since childhood at the restaurant we frequented for 20 years 2-3 times a month. They're so kind, get the to go orders down perfectly and the FLAVOR is so so so good. Not to mention, it's so reasonable priced! Each entree is roughly 2 meals worth. If we ever move, this restaurant will be one of the biggest things I'll miss about North Austin. Recommend the Black Bean Chicken and the Mapo Tofu for blow your socks off dishes. I've never had anything bad from there but these two I can't help myself to keep ordering they're so great. The only thing about this place I'm kinda meh on is the environment. It's peaceful but is a little hard (cold, sterile) and the lighting is a touch harsh (hard to to remember pre-covid at this point). I've ordered from here many times and every time has been a good experience. They always deliver within their estimated time and their Chinese food is really good. Every time I call, they have my previous order saved incase I want the same thing (which I usually do). I've actually never eaten in the restaurant itself because I've always gotten delivery or takeout. Takeout is always prepared and ready to go when I arrive. Delivery times can vary depending on the time of day. The combo fried rice is good, but it does have a lot of onions-more than I prefer. The egg drop soup is not too salty compared to other Chinese restaurants, which I appreciate. Egg rolls are just ok, wouldn't recommend them as much. Their sesame chicken was the highlight of our meal. The portion is large so I had it for dinner two nights in a row or it would be a good meal to share. The food was very flavorful and unique, not your typically stir fry at an Asian restaurant, flavors were rich and tasty, really different from any other tofu vegetable dish I've had! The food is always great. They never fail. The beef and broccoli is my go to order. I have tried many others and they always taste great. And they are consistently accurate with their timeframe. They are so quick too. I don't know how they do it but they say 15 minutes and in 15 minutes I'm there picking up my food. It's my go to place when I'm craving some lo mein. read more

They started off with serving us these fried wonton wrapper chips with a sweet orange chicken type sauce. I thought it was a bit strange, but they weren't bad. But from this point on I knew this was not going to be an authentic Chinese/Taiwanese meal like other people described it to be. However, this doesn't mean the food can't be enjoyable. I really enjoyed the roast beef rolls. Besides this, the beef noodle soup was a little watered down, and all of the other dishes (like mapo tofu) seemed over-salted or too soy saucy for my taste.
