Came to Danbi around 730pm on a Friday night and there were maybe 3 other parties inside. It's brightly lit inside, with plenty of tables and a rather open space. Service was brisk. We were just looking for some quick bites, so we ordered a seafood pancake and meat jun to share. Both of these were very generous portions. The seafood pancake had a nice light crisp, and was full of seafood and green onion, while the meat jun game on a bed of fresh cabbage and was full of tender, sweet and flavorful bulgolgi. We really enjoyed both with the banchan! Danbi has some great offerings, and I'll definitely try to come again to try some of the entrees and other things when I'm in the area and looking for a full meal! read more

I would have given 5 stars but knocking off two stars due to poor service with one of the servers. I've been coming to this restaurant for many years, dating back to the previous owners, who were always warm and welcoming. I have many fond memories of dining here. The food is still excellent. We ordered the tofu and chicken bubbling soup along with the bibimbap, and everything was delicious. The quality of the food is definitely a reason I would return. Unfortunately, the service was very inconsistent. There were two servers during our visit. One was incredibly kind, professional, attentive, and welcoming. She checked on us, offered more side dishes, and was very sweet with my six-year-old son. I even thanked her personally at the end of the meal because her hospitality stood out. The other server, however, made the experience uncomfortable. From the moment we arrived, there was no warm greeting -- we were simply asked how many were in our party. We were seated at a very small table, and when I politely asked if we could move to a larger one since we were ordering multiple dishes with sides and I had my young son with me, she looked visibly annoyed. Throughout the meal, she kept making faces when I asked normal questions about the menu or requested an extra to-go box. These were simple customer requests, and her reactions felt rude and unnecessary. I also noticed that several other reviews mention a woman making faces during service, and based on my experience, I believe this may be the same server. That kind of behavior really affects the dining experience and should be addressed by management. Hospitality matters, especially in a restaurant setting. Good food is important, but customers should also feel welcome and respected. Overall, I would come back because the food was delicious, and the other server was genuinely lovely. We stumbled upon Danbi and we're SO glad we did! Between the 2 of us we shared the kimchi stone pot, the chap chae with beef, and the spicy rice cakes. Everything was incredible. The stone pot was so flavorful and the cheese quickly melted as the pot was sizzling hot. The chap chae was hot glass noodles with a slightly sweet sauce and was addicting. The spicy rice cakes are so incredibly chewy and the sauce was the perfect spice level for us! I was tempted to add cheese to the rice cakes and probably will next time! Came by last weekend after we tried to go Rice Junky Katsu next door and there was an unknown wait. There were 5 people in front of us and 3 completely open tables around 8PM, and we needed to be somewhere. This restaurant was filling up but it really only seemed like 3 or so employees, one waiting tables, one by the counter, and another in the kitchen. Looks like a family run business that could probably use some more hands! We ordered Yookdaejang: Good! I have no complaints about this one. Galbitang: Didn't try any but my wife said it was kind of bland. We went to Kunjip the week before and didn't get to order this, so we were really craving it. It's very good at Kunjip. I was debating just doing a seafood pancake instead. I saw a bunch of other tables have it and it looked thick and crispy. For both soups, it was too much for us so we took them both home and ate it for dinner the following day. Added more noodles to it too, so value wise it kinda worked out. The banchan was good. They ran out of fish cake but I loved the kimchi! Yesterday, my brother, aunt, and I hosted a memorial lunch here for my mom. This restaurant has a special meaning to us as my brother and I hosted a 70th surprise party for her several years back. Pros- the food is really tasty! Several guests told me it's their go to spot for Korean food (gmta!) Janet, the new owner also ensured that some of my favorite bonchon were served. I requested the potatoes in the sweet shoyu sauce and broccoli with sesame oil, so delicious! We took up one whole section of the restaurant and the serving team was great! Cons- no private room, although I think they have the potential for one. I think this is my fourth or fifth time here! I usually get the mushroom tofu soup with vegetarian broth or the tofu bibimbap. The tofu soup is the best I've had in the bay. I'm a fan of Korean food. However, on Friday evening I found that my favorite Korean restaurant in downtown Los Altos was temporarily closed. A search in Yelp got me this Korean restaurant in Los Gatos, which was 1/2 hour away. We got there at around 8:20pm, which was fine as their website said their closing time was 9:00. However, to my dismay, the receptionist wouldn't give me a table because he said they had closed. What the heck!? He said this was the time they closed their kitchen, and 9:00 was the time they cleared the tables. I said then they should say their actual closing time is 8:20, and that would save customers like me from driving all this way only to be turned away. He said it wasn't his problem and that I should complain to the manager, who, of course, was not there. What a great operation. I bet the food is just as bad. read more

The location in Downtown San Jose is the one we have visited the most, even though there are more and more homeless people lying outside now. We went there to have dinner in an early evening. Because it was still early, the restaurant was not busy. We stood behind the booth waiting to be seated. One auntie asked us to sit in the booth and we walked toward it and the other auntie stopped us and said it's reserved. I told her that the other auntie told us to sit there. We were confused and she gave us the long face. To customers, we just actually want to sit down and eat so it really doesn't matter where to sit. Their lack of communication and coordination ruined the experience. What's the long face for? Compared to the previous dinner experiences, the quality of food was apparently going downhill drastically. Food is now either too salty as in soup and tofu or tasteless as in fried chicken. I mean the fried chicken from Vons and Bonchon are way better than theirs. The auntie who is a native Korean didn't even know the difference Galbi Tang and Galbi and brought us the wrong order. We could have been dishonest and kept the more expensive meat dish but we didn't and she wasn't happy with our clarification. When we asked for to go boxes to pack the food, the auntie didn't ask and started to pour the soup in and make a spill. She didn't give us the spoon spatula in the first place, she didn't apologize for the spill, she didn't offer to top it off after losing our soup that we paid for. Service staff is nice and also there are a wide variety of menu offerings that would please both those new to Korean food and those who are experienced. I got the dol sot bap (hot stone pot rice) that comes with beef by default but you can choose other proteins. The pot is hot enough to do the crispy rice which means the dish passed the test. Banchan were diverse and pretty solid! There was almost everything you could want - kimchi, radish kimchi, cucumber kimchi, bean sprouts, etc My coworkers got many things such as the stir fry and bulgogi and kalbi. It looked like everyone enjoyed their meal so we will have to add this to our lunch rotation. Parking is a bit limited but there is a small lot a little bit down the street next to the restaurant. "Korean plates in San Jose" Came here on a Thursday evening at 7:45pm for dinner with two others. Parking is basically street-parking right outside. The venue is modest rather than fancy-- felt very "hole in the wall", in a good way. My daughter wanted to come here specifically for the spicy rice cakes. We ordered the spicy rice cakes as an appetizer, and I got the bi bim bap. My dining mates got soft tofu soups. I've not had spicy rice cakes before-- some were rice cakes and some were fish cakes, but if there was a difference among the pieces on the plate, I never noticed. Still, it was a tasty dish. The texture was soft and very slightly chewy. My bi bim bap was fine-- about the same as I've gotten anywhere I've had the dish... flavorful & tasty but not extreme in either direction. We also got little plates with pickled vegetables and other items-- we assume these are the "side dishes" (banchan) mentioned subtly in the menu. They were enjoyable-- the one I think was potato was especially good, but we liked them all at least reasonably. I was surprised how mild the kimchi was, but it still tasted good. My dining mates enjoyed their tofu soups, but they came SUPER hot (temperature), so I was totally finished with my meal a long time before they were able to finish theirs. Service was good-- there was almost no one else there, so we had their full attention, and they brought our food pretty quick. Indeed, by the time we were finished at 8:45pm, they were already cleaning up around us since they formally closed at 8:30pm. But we never felt rushed out the door. Price was OK-- could have been a bit cheaper but wasn't excessively expensive. Overall, solid choice if you're in the area.
