As someone who really appreciates dedicated gluten-free restaurants, I was excited to try RICE, I have a friend who suffers from Celiac so this is one of the only places she can eat. Having an entirely gluten-free menu is a huge plus and makes it a great option for anyone with dietary restrictions or gluten sensitivities. That said, my experience was a bit underwhelming. The service at this location felt noticeably slow, and while the food was fresh, it unfortunately lacked the flavor I was hoping for. Everything tasted a bit muted and could have used more seasoning or depth. I really appreciate what RICE is doing by offering a completely gluten-free menu, and I'd be willing to give it another try in the future. Everyone dining the night I went were not. Empty on a friday night. Also the food takes a very long time and we had to ask them to put a rush on it bc we waited at least half hr for the sashimi and I really didnt understand why when there were only 3 parties and our food went in as the 2nd party.... First of all, know it's inside a mall on the third floor. The escalator was broken but go up there anyway. It's worth it. I will start by saying this was 5 stars for the service alone. The woman and the man who helped were so lovely and so excited that I found this place. It is 100% gluten free and like a dream. I got the omakase set for $39 and added the veggie tempura for $12 more. You can also choose to do a sake flight. I didn't. I ate a whole plate of veggie tempura. I ate yellowtail hamachi. I ate ramen. I will say the ramen was a little disappointing but not enough to take away a star. The lobster was fresh but a little bland. The taste was overpowered by the fried onions/garlic. Parking is validated for 2 hours, and your ticket can get 2 validations max. We spent time and got something at Daiso as well which provided another hour of parking. The service was so nice here. We came here early and they were the perfect balance of checking in on us but not being overly attached. The happy hour did change which isn't reflected on the website - up to 5pm now. The food was mediocre though. It seems like it's catered towards vegan, gluten free cuisine which shouldn't be a problem with sushi. Crispy rice sampler: standard but the top could have used more flavor and the rice a little less in size. Citrus salmon roll: my wife enjoyed this a lot but I thought it was just okay. Yellowtail collar: I liked this the most. Good portion size with shio Koji on top giving it flavor. I'd get this again if I came back, thought it might have been slightly overcooked. They did end with some cookies and tea which was a nice touch. All the desserts are vegan so I wonder if the cookies are too. read more

This is the absolute best gluten-free restaurant I have ever been to. The Ramen was so delicious. Our waitress was phenomenal. She was so attentive and made sure that we enjoyed everything. Even the drinks were incredibly good. I cannot wait to eat here again. My only regret is that I did not take a photo of my Ramen. It was too good. I just immediately started to eat it. I had an amazing meal here with a friend last night! I was seamlessly able to add myself to the waitlist using Yelp and when we arrived, there was a table waiting for us! The service was so friendly and I love how they asked multiple times if we had food allergies, so it seems like something they take very seriously! When telling them I was vegan, they indicated that there was a large selection of vegan items, which is actually the reason we came to check it out! They also checked on us multiple times throughout, ensuring we were satisfied and refilling our water. I had been to their location in Manhattan Beach years ago, as well as Shojin, prior to the latter closing. The space felt very similar but they put their own touch on it! The decor was very elegant and felt authentically Japanese. I personally loved the sake collection on the wall. The seats were very comfortable and despite being in a busy shopping center, I felt transported to a different space. The food itself was very delicious! My friend and I shared the buffalo cauliflower and I got the vegan crab hand roll. I love how it was so flavorful and perfectly spiced. My favorite was the buffalo cauliflower with the cooling creamy mayo that came with it! I've never had crab, but it did taste realistic to the non vegan counterpart. The sushi looked so delicious too, I'm a bit regretful I didn't order it! They were so sweet in giving us some complimentary tea and cookies to end the meal! They have some prefix menus that looked enticing and I am appreciative that there's a vegan option for each one. It definitely gives me a reason to return! Parking is super easy in the mall's lot and when we arrived on a Saturday night, there were ample spots available. Rice is located in the dead mall of Little Tokyo which means easy free parking! Located on the top floor, the space is nice, the service was exceptional, but the sushi rolls weren't very filling for the price. We had to get 4th sushi roll on top of our appetizer to feel close to full. Crispy Rice Sampler (22) - 6 pieces total with three different types. Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna (flavorless), Spicy Salmon, Spicy Yellowtail (group favorite). I'd skip this. Spicy Tuna Roll (12) - barely any tuna and if you look at the roll ratio is mostly cucumber. This tiny roll is not on the menu, but we were craving something basic to supplement, but this miss the mark. You can get a better version for $8 at other places? Citrus Salmon Roll (20) - Very citrus-y. In a good way. There are 8 pieces. White Sand (20) - Also 8 pieces, this roll wasn't very memorable. I'd skip this one Lobster Dynamite Roll (25) - Delicious, but only 8 pieces. BUT each piece comes with two pieces of lobster. This is the most popular roll. I can see why. The dynamite sauce was good. Magical Seafood Roll (25). - After the appetizer, three rolls and supplemental roll, we were very unsatisfied and decided on another roll which turned out to be one of our favorites because of the snow crab that sat on top of the rolls. We order the lobster dynamite roll, baked salmon roll, and the buffalo cauliflower. The buffalo cauliflower was overcooked, they boil it first then fry it. It tasted like burnt water. The lobster roll tasted so bland, and you couldn't taste any lobster. I didn't finish it. The baked salmon roll was bland as well. No flavor at all. We were so sad when Shojin closed, so we were thrilled to find that Rice opened in the same spot, and offers vegan and gluten free options, as well as fresh fish and seafood, so it's good if you are going with friends who aren't vegan and want actual fish! This is a bit off the beaten path in Little Tokyo - it's in the mall that I worry is slowly declining, and hoping that it gets revived, because it's fairly easy parking (validated), and has a cool arcade/bowling lanes upstairs (right next to Rice), and Max Karaoke in the same building. And a Daiso, and a Beard Papa. In any case, we made a reservation for Sunday at around 7pm, and the place was not full at all. As others have said, it's a small space, so it's very intimate, and very quiet -- almost too quiet, but maybe we went on a quiet night. Service is impeccable. We had a late lunch, so we weren't starving, and just ordered the crispy rice sampler and the dragon roll, and a miso soup, and a peach iced tea. The crispy rice sampler comes with their three offerings of crispy rice (avocado truffle, garlic sweet potato, and spicy tofu). The crispy rice had perfect crunch and texture - an amazing base for the flavors that got piled on top. The avocado truffle was my favorite. I've never had that particular combination of flavors, and they were so well balanced and the flavors were unique and popped. It's pretty intense, and I think I would be done after just a few bites (so I'm glad we just had the sampler. The garlic sweet potato was the least favorite, but still good. Great textures with the slice of fried garlic, but it felt like the sweet potato mash on top could have used a bit more seasoning. The spicy tofu one was my partner's favorite. Whereas I said I could probably only eat a few bites of the avocado truffle one because its flavor was so rich, the spicy tofu was light and subtle, and you could probably eat a whole plate of that. And it's not that spicy. Just enough kick for your tastebuds to dance a bit. WE also got the vegan dragon roll, which came with sweet bean curd on top, some avo and cucumber. They bring the dragon roll to the table and torch it - to mimic the seared tuna that comes with the non-vegan one, and the sear brings out the umami taste of the bean curd. It was really really good. We didn't have room for dessert, but we are looking forward to coming back and trying their omakase. Service was amazing, everything good. We visited this cute little place on the last day of Dine LA, and took advantage of a great dinner deal. $25 that included an appetizer, a small bite and a roll. For the appetizers we got the chilled cucumber and the lotus root. Both were light but flavorful. For small bite they offered spicy tuna and spicy salmon crispy rice, and we tried both. They were the perfect size, not too big, but enough to give you a taste. For the rolls, we got the double dragon roll and the citrus salmon roll. The rolls were really good, and very filling. And the fish was fresh too. I love that they didn't try to skimp because it was a special discounted menu. Overall, food was 4.5/5 and service was 5/5. It's rare to find gluten free places that include fried foods so she was so happy that she could eat whatever she wanted on the menu! I got the double dragon roll and it was phenomenal. It had good flavor, the toro was delicious, and the crunch was spectacular. The roll tasted fresh and healthy (even if it wasn't lol). The service was top tier, our waitress was so kind and friendly. I received the thinnest pieces of sashimi. Granted the fish was fresh and high quality, but paper thin for a $25 special. I also got the salmon citrus roll--disappointing. For $20 for a roll I expected something a little more. Again very small portions of fish on top and filled with fat cucumber.
