I really like this place but today's impromptu visit wasn't good. Okay it was V-day and you should never go out on V-day, but... First I was expecting a lunch menu...there was none. Second, our waiter Tum, seemed quite clueless. When I asked about the peanut curry or the coconut curry, he said well if you like peanuts..but if you like coconuts...really. I really enjoyed my trip to Ricky's Thai. Considering the lack of decent Thai food in Princeton, I had to expand my location search to find this place. The interior decor was really classy and intimate enough for a nice date place. The bathrooms are super clean too. We ordered the Pad Kee Mao and the Green Curry in a medium spice. You can choose the level of spice you want - 1 through 5. Both of the dishes were really good. I always appreciate a restaurant that is generous with meats and vegetables, especially with noodle dishes. We also ordered the Curry Puffs. They are similar to Indian Samosas but they're flatter and in a crescent shape. Those were just okay. It's not a dish that can be made fresh, so it's probably reheated. The sweet mango sauce was just okay as well; it tasted like sweet and sour with fruit in it. Wait staff was decent. As an avid Thai food-lover, I find myself perpetually craving red curry. The introduction of Ricky's to the Montgomery area a few years ago was a welcomed change because there are very few Thai restaurants in the area. Whenever I'm home for an extended amount of time, I'm able to get my Thai food fix at Ricky's while meeting up with hometown friends. Decor is clean and simple yet modern and the menu is quite expansive. Plus, the menu is very vegetarian and vegan friendly! I typically get the Gang Dang red curry with tofu at a spice level of 2 (ranges from 1-5) and have never been disappointed. My only qualm is that the curry to rice ratio is a bit off and I always finish the rice much earlier and am still hungry/have lots of curry left over. Normally I ask for a second serving of rice, which has an upcharge. Other dishes I've tried included the Pad Lard Nar, Pad See Eu, and Pad Kee Mao, all of which I have enjoyed. BYOB. My experience here is hit or miss. I've done pick up three times now. The person in the front never smiles and is so unenthusiastic. Today I ordered a large Tom yum soup. 12 bucks for a large soup is a little much. The soup was mostly filled with mushrooms and onions, not a lot of soup. Ricky's Thai is a sort of enigma for me. I've dined plenty of times, and despite having solid fare and a very nice atmosphere, the place is always empty; not usually a good sign. Yet, despite the sparse attendance, I've never had a bad experience and always find myself leaving very happily with my meal. I'm not sure why they are not rated higher. On our most recent visit, we had the Honey Puff, Duck Noodles, and Panang Curry. Everything was delicious, as always. We especially liked the Honey Puff. It's served over a velvety lobster bisque which was really good. Our only disappointment was that there were three pieces; it was so good we wanted more. The curry had the just the right mix of sweet, spicy, creamy, and savory flavors. The duck noodles were solid as well. The service was great and the atmosphere is relaxed with a contemporary vibe. I love Thai food, it is my comfort food so I think I know a little something about Thai food. My order today was chicken fried rice with spicy basil. I was told I would get more chicken than if I were to order spicy basil fried rice (vegetarian) and add $2 worth of chicken. Well what I received (which I thought I would) was a lot of rice, "some" chicken, hardly any spiciness or flavor AND charged a dinner price ($19). I hate when restaurants do that--they skimp on the meat. Why? Anyhow, I have ordered from here twice--different dishes. Ricky, the owner is always so kind and attentive. His Pad Thai is by far my favorite and the best I've ever had. The satay is also delicious and the peanut sauce is addictive. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and I recommend it for girls night out or for a date night with your special someone. So i basically removed all the uncooked meat pieces and had a vegetarian dish, because you know, I would like to be healthy than eat raw meat. The best part: it's relatively close and conveniently located on 206, across the street from ShopRite and Montgomery Cinemas. Food: Perfect level of heat. Nuanced, authentic flavors and lots of fresh vegetables, even in the lunch specials. I'm partial to their curries, which so far have all been fantastic. Everything tastes delicious! Pretty solid thai- definitely nice ambiance. The service and food came out VERY fast. Specials are VERY well-priced given portions and the interior. Their spice ratings are spot-on... a 3 is really a 3/5 in spice so that's a good place to begin, I think, especially if your own cuisine is spicy (I'm southeast asian so 3 or 4 was a good place to start). Favorites were drunken noodles, pad thai, and red curry. They also did a mango shrimp dish which was nice, but we couldn't see any mango but we were able to taste it. Their lunch menu is limited, but good, except they don't even had drunken noodles on it (but still offer it, except at dinner price so a bit more $). We did not encounter the owner (this was dinnertime on a Monday evening) Food: I went with a family group and everyone liked what they got, ranging from pad thai and drunken noodle to beef cooked with fresh ginger and vegetables. Prices are slightly higher than most local Thai spots, perhaps to reflect the fancier decor. I saw several groups BYOB and they didn't seem to charge corkage fees. Overall I would have given 4 stars except for 2 things: 1) When we got the bill, we were charged for 4 Thai iced teas when we had ordered only 3 (and there were very obviously only 3 cups on the table). They corrected this quickly, but it was a sloppy mistake. 2) I found a hair in my entree, and it definitely wasn't mine since it was UNDER some of the noodles.
