Good food! My husband and I were looking for a place to eat around 9pm and not many places open around this area, we were walking so we found this place on our way. The service was fast and the pizza was delicious, I ordered a deep dish pizza with veggies and sausage was great, the fresh fries are good too. I have to admit the street felt a little sketch but inside everyone was very warm. The set up felt a little lackluster but all the best eats are. I started going to Ricobene's back in the late 80s because I work for a limousine service in the area. It was one of the go to places for a lot of the drivers there. Most would order the breaded steak that are knownfor but I always loved everything they have including the breaded chicken sandwich and their pizza both thin and deep dish. You can get a hot and ready slice to go and it's always really good. I'm headed back there tonight and I can't wait. The sausage is alright but they did not dip the entire sandwich into the beef juice. The fries were about a cup full, and the combo sandwich was more of a snack, like a burrito, which could pass for something on party or special event trays. This was my first time at Ricobene's and I wasn't sure what to expect but I knew that I wanted to give the breaded steak sandwich a try. My wife & I went in this past Saturday mid-afternoon. It wasn't busy so there was no problem getting a table. I immediately liked the interior, not too light, not too dark, a great photo display on the walls, room to move, just a comfortable place to kick back for a meal. I liked that it was counter service, no waiting for either a server at the beginning or the check at the end. The two counter staff that I dealt with were helpful and personable. Thank goodness, no teenage zombies behind the counter. They have a good size menu but we went with the intent of getting the breaded steak. For me, it just didn't live up to the hype I've heard for years. Thankfully, I asked them to go easy on the gravy but any crispness of the breading was entirely washed away. I'm betting that had I asked for it plain with the gravy on the side I would have been happier, as the steak had good flavor and wasn't the least bit tough or chewy. We went with their special that includes a soft drink and either fries or onion rings. My wife's rings were really good but my fries were more cool than warm. I should add that you certainly don't feel cheated with the amount of meat that comes on that sandwich. I was surprised. The one thing that was a true negative is the "No Refills On Drinks" policy. I could see limiting to only one refill, give us at least that. Would I return for another try? However, following my recent visit after a three-year absence due to relocation to Indiana, it's disheartening to report a noticeable decline in both culinary standards and service quality. The once-praised food quality has taken a considerable hit, with a noticeable decrease in the flavors and overall appeal that originally captivated patrons like me. Additionally, the customer service, which was once a strong suit of this establishment, now falls short of the standard I had come to expect over the years. The staff seemed less attentive and the overall atmosphere lacked the warmth and hospitality that characterized previous visits. This deviation from the established standard is particularly disappointing, given the longstanding connection I had with this place. While I understand that businesses may undergo changes, the shift observed during my recent visit was significant and not in a positive direction. I sincerely hope that the management takes note of these concerns and makes necessary improvements to restore the restaurant to its former glory. I recently had to make a trip to downtown Chicago for some business. I have been wanting to visit a legendary Chicago Food landmark that has been in business since 1946 on Chicago's southside. This Chicago landmark is none other than Ricobenes on the South side of Chicago. I remember the first time I ever tried a Ricobene's famous breaded steak sandwich. I was at the Taste of Chicago almost 30 years ago. I had completely forgotten how delicious the sandwich was. I kept putting it on my bucket list that I wanted to go back to the original location while in Chicago. The problem is it's not really an easy location to get to if you're not close to the southside of Chicago. The location is past Chinatown off of 26th Street on Chicago's southside. The location has a pretty run down massive parking area across the street from the restaurant. The parking area may leave some with hesitation to try this place out. The parking is under a massive bridge structure and graffiti is everywhere. The concrete that you are driving on is riddled with potholes. I would like to give a heads up that if you are going to park in this area please be mindful of the potholes that could completely destroy your vehicle. Once I entered the restaurant it was very welcoming. The restaurant is adorned in wood panelling and is very bright and open with large windows letting in natural sunlight. The ordering process is quite simple. I walked up to two counters that both had signs saying order here. I went with the original breaded steak sandwich king size. I also got the hot giardiniera on the side. I also ordered a side of fries with my order. I will say this price has definitely increased. This is no shock as it is like this everywhere. The breaded steak sandwich and an order of fries set me back $22. I was going to eat my sandwich there at the restaurant, but decided to make my way back home, due to the fact the restaurant was starting to get busy during lunchtime. The restaurant is very large and there is ample seating even when it is busy. I would also like to add that they have numerous other items on the menu which I've also heard are awesome that I will have to try on my next visit. I heard that their pizza is fantastic and also their eggplant Parmesan sandwich is also great. It took me about an hour to get home with my sandwich because of traffic - though luckily was still warm and my fries were also still warm. The sandwich was already cut in two halves. The sandwich is absolutely enormous. I could only eat half at a time. My first bite was pure heaven. The flavor is that of a marinara flavor, then you are hit with the thin breaded steak that almost has a chicken flavor to it. The bread is Turano bread and is a perfect fit for a sandwich. The bread has just the right chewiness and firmness to make it soggy from the sauce. The sandwich consists of a large flattened out piece of steak that is rolled to fit the sandwich. The center of the roll steak is then filled with a large amount of mozzarella. I do not know if they make their own giardiniera, but it was delicious and definitely added flavor to the sandwich. The fries had a flavor of fresh cut fries that tasted identical to that of Gene and Judes hotdogs. I will say this is definitely worth a trip to try if you are just visiting Chicago for a vacation. I will also say this is definitely a try if you are a resident of Illinois. This is an extremely unique sandwich and is absolutely delicious. I think everyone should try the sandwich at least once. I give Ricobenes a rating of 8 out of 10. It is definitely worth it to go take the drive down to the southside of Chicago and experience this deliciousness for yourself. read more

The truth is I only came here because this place was featured in No Reservations Chicago. So I felt compelled to come and check this place out. I ordered the infamous breaded steak sandwich with a side of jalapeño poppers and the pistachio frozen custard for dessert. Oh my god... My first thought was "where do I even begin?!" The top of the bread was barely hanging on, the sandwich was overflowing from the steak and sauce. I decided to take a semi-side bite of the over drenched steak. It was okay, a bit soggy due to the sauce. I would've preferred the crispy texture of the breaded steak more. The jalapeño poppers were meh, there were 2 different types of cheeses, american and cream cheese. The was a bit much, especially the one filled with cream cheese. I dunno, when I feel like I'm eating more cream cheese than the food itself, it becomes bleh for me. The pistachio nut was amazing! I love how such a simple dessert can taste delicious. I wish the pistachio was more pronounced. I really like the nutty flavor of pistachios. Overall, I enjoyed my experience. I was slightly annoyed, that I was charged a few cents extra for the sweet peppers and cheese? The guy made it sound like it came with the sandwich. Other then that, I would probably come here again if have a friend visit from out of town. It was nice to try and I had my fill.
