I can't agree more then with Michele G. I have been going into Rim Forest Lumber for years and, although the service hasn't always been great, I never before received the poor service and attitude I received this past Saturday when I went in with a shut-off valve in hand that I needed to replace. The girl, Summer, who showed me where the replacement valves were was not only extremely unhelpful she was unfriendly, was not listening to what I was telling her and gave me a lot of attitude. She did not have the valve I had brought in to replace but instead showed me another one which she thought might work but kept telling me there were "no guarantees" and that I could not return it if I were to damage it. When I returned home with the new valve, I could see that if she knew what she was doing she could have guaranteed it NOT to work. I brought a galvanized valve with a 1/2" male end and she sold me a copper valve with a 3/4" male end (which was hidden). When I brought it in an hour late for a refund, she would not take it back because I opened it up to see that it was 3/4" thread and not 1/2" that I needed. I took great care in removing the nut and the valve was not damaged whatsoever. The manager, Stephanie, and another girl working behind the counter both chimed in saying, "We heard her tell you there were no guarantees". OK, no guarantee but how does that translate to no refund? Again, there was no damage to the valve and the only way she knew that I took a wrench to the nut is because I told her. They have lost a valued customer and I have already told my friends and family not to patronize this store anymore. All this over a $10. valve. Guess they never heard of customer satisfaction. Such a shame because now I will have to go to Cedar Glen for my hardware needs. read more

It is amazing that Rim has the selection they have in such a small space. Don't get me wrong, nowhere near the big box hardware stores but they almost always seem to have what I need for up here on the mountain. They are not overpriced and if you need info there is always someone easily available. These guys really know their hardware! read more

We moved to Crestline 3 years ago and remodeled several rooms and a major transformation on exterior, concrete, siding, retainer wall, and painting. At first we used Rim only when we forgot an item at H Depot, but we learned quickly to rely on their inventory, advise and friendly service from each and every department and free delivery! I am very disappointed with Rim Lumber's hiring practices. For the last two years since leaving Home Depot, after 21 years with them, I have focused on being part of Rim Lumber. I have filled out the application and used referrals such as Pierre and others there. When the drivers do a delivery I talk to them and they say how great the company is and what a wonderful benefits package you offer. I have two college degrees yet I've never received a call from Ron. I love customer service and excellent at remedying Home repair problems with customers. I have told the girls upstairs that I have recently moved my mom to Laguna Woods since my father's death with plans on relocating to our vacation home in Lake Arrowhead. I would typically give a place like Rim Forest Lumber a 2 star or less, due to the prices but I have to take into consideration that this is a mountain business. Everything is about 1/3 more what it should cost at home depot. But it's great to have when you're in a pinch. Also, and i must admit, the staff is extremely helpful AND knowledgeable- 'that' you wont find at you wont find at a big box orange or blue store. I've mostly used their paint department. The paint people are great. Their front counter people are great, too, mostly. They have free local delivery a few days out from when you order, which is A+++. Keep an eye on the charges as you're rung up at the register. I was charged $99 for a one-gallon can of paint. The guys at the front and the paint people were looking for a code for the correct price when a woman who worked there, who had no idea or asked about what was going on, inserted herself and declared that if it rang up at $99, it was $99, and didn't want anyone to change the price. It was only resolved with the correct price after a heated debate, which should have been unnecessary. I got a "Oh, well, it should have rung up and the correct price." at the end. Yes, it should have, but there was a mistake and it's okay to fix mistakes without drama. Rim Forest Lumber provides free local delivery of lumber. I've used this service and it was great. You'll get your order in about three M-F days from when you order it. What you give up for the convenience and delivery savings is control over the quality of the lumber delivered. I've received lumber that is splintered along the length, pithy, one looked like it had insect borings, etc. If you want more control or don't want to have to over-order by a lot to get enough decent pieces for a project, go to Home Depot and select each piece. For longer lengths, it's easier to just order extra wood from Rim Forest Lumber. My only tip is to not have the person taking the order to write down a special request. I don't know if it was coincidence, but I did that once and the full order was junk wood. read more

I am a part timer in the Mountains and have been for over 30 years. In that time I've learned that Rim Forest lumber is absolutely the best place for all construction and repair needs. I've spent thousands at a time there, and 95 cents today. The service I got was the same, I.e., help from truly knowledgeable people who want to help and know everything about everything you can think of concerning lumber, plumbing, electrical, tools and stuff you never dreamed you need to know. They are honestly friendly and prompt and have saved me a lot of money over the years by giving me better ideas than I came in with, and instructions on what to do. It's a bit pricier than a big box but far superior in all ways. The products are often much better, the selection bigger and the help is worth far more than the pennies you might save down the hill. Shopping local here is good for you, not just them. read more

I have to say that this is the WORST place to do business & its really sad because we only have 2 hardware stores in the mountains! The prices for the most part are better then Ace however I found them not to be honest on their adding! I was charged $30.02 for a piece of wood & screws. The wood came from their half price lot & I was okay with the price but when picking up my warped piece of nothing plywood their employee advised me that I was paying way to much & that I was paying for their quality wood. He went into the office & informed the service desk that there was an error & I was told to go back in to fix the problem. Well they fixed it alright, instead of a $30.02 bill it jumped to $47.62. Unbelievable & just WRONG! The rude person that waited on me talked way to fast & didn't explain anything! I was under the impression that he was voiding out the first receipt & giving me a credit for the overcharge but that.s not what he did, he charged me twice for a piece of warped wood! When I realized what he had done I drove all the way back & again I got the Fast Talk! I told him to slow down & help me understand their mess up but he refused! He sent me to their accounting & accounting Refused to make things right because it was close to closing time & they couldn't be bothered! I was told to come back after the weekend but they were in the right, well I say WRONG & they've lost this customer! Not happy with Dis-honest people!!!!! read more

I've found it very difficult to get help here except at the check-out counter. Heck, in the mountains they should be used to women in a lumberyard who who aren't just pretty faces -- we mean business! To their credit, once you're able to chase down some help, they will place orders for whatever they don't have, and if you factor in the travel time and gasoline down the mountain and back up again to get the item somewhere else, then the somewhat higher price can be worth it. However, *you* will have to call back to see whether the order came in, because they forget to do it! Sometimes Rim Lumber carries items that are hard to find elsewhere; for a while, it sold a type of milled wood siding identical to the siding used on houses up here in the '30s. So it really does have its good points, too. read more

Great customer service! Last year we sided our house and ended up being two pieces short. I called Home Depot to order the two pieces. They told me it was a 10 sheet minimum which would have cost us over $600! I called Rim Forest Lumber and spoke with Stephanie. She ordered the 2 sheets I needed and they were there for pick up the next day! People think they are more expensive than the big box, but I think we ended up paying about $3.00 more per sheet which is worth not driving down the mountain, and in this case spending the extra per sheet actually saved me $500 since they didn't have a 10 sheet minimum. Glad to have them on the mountain. I hope they keep up the good customer service. read more

For a small business their selection is amazing. Specialty and hard to find items abound. Much of their stock is priced a little high, but the lumber prices frequently beat HD and Lowes. 2 by's, 4 by's, Oak and T&G are all cheaper here than down the mountain, specially if you factor in the cost of the drive. read more
