During a recent trip to St. Augustine, a friend and I were walking by River & Fort and saw that they had a rooftop bar. Being a beautiful Florida, naturally, we stopped in and asked if the rooftop bar was open. We're so glad we did because it was a great place to chill with a drink, overlooking the water. Be warned, if it's a windy day it'll be a little difficult to have food or the umbrellas for shade. But definitely DON'T let that deter you from going anyways. There's technically, two rooftop areas. There's the bigger area with lounge seating. Then there's the top area with high boys and seating along the railing. If you don't plan on eating and don't need the table space, opt for the seating along the railing.they all face the water. We got a couple cocktails that were all tasty and not overly sweet. That's my biggest pet peeve with cocktails, is that they are so sweet that it masks the hint of alcohol. The staff are all friendly and attentive. read more

We made a reservation at River and Fort for a very special occasion -- my wife's 50th birthday. With our full family of four in town, we were hoping for an upscale, memorable night. What we got instead was a two-hour train wreck dressed in a tablecloth. We arrived on time and checked in, only to wait about 25 minutes for a table -- despite dozens of visibly empty tables. For a Friday night, the energy was confusingly low, and the service even lower. When we were finally seated on the second level, my wife sat down, gave me the look, and I immediately knew -- it was unbearably hot. Not warm. Not toasty. Hot. She began fanning herself with the menu like she was trying to survive a heatwave. I glanced around, and other diners looked equally miserable. I flagged the server and asked about the lack of airflow. Her response? "The rooftop doors open and close all the time, so there's nothing we can do." Translation: Deal with it. I politely said this wasn't going to work and asked to be reseated. She said she'd check with the manager. A few minutes later, she returned and said the manager essentially refused to help. No apology, no solution. Just "nothing we can do." Thankfully, she found a table downstairs -- where it was easily 15-20 degrees cooler. So yes, there was something that could have been done. Management just didn't care to do it. We were then handed off to our server, Nathan B., who took our drink order. It took 15 minutes to get three drinks and a water -- and from there, the service only got worse. No offer of appetizers. No check-ins. Water glasses sat dry despite repeated promises to refill them. Our four entrees took an hour to arrive. We watched other tables seated after us get their food first, while Nathan seemed to actively avoid eye contact. Two entrees arrived. Ten minutes later, the other two trickled in. All four were steak. Three were cold, dry, and tough. The sides? Just as cold, like they'd been sitting in a window, forgotten. Nathan swung by 15 minutes later, said "hows the food good to hear thank you," in one breath, and was gone before we could blink. No sincerity. No care. Just get in, get out, get paid. We sat, plates half-eaten, still parched. Nathan reappeared about 30 minutes later to ask if we were done. He brought the check, but never asked if we wanted dessert. No birthday gesture. No acknowledgment of the occasion the hostess had noted. No attempt to make the night special -- or even tolerable. We spent nearly $300 for cold steaks, room-temperature water, and the type of service that makes you want to eat at home forever. This place isn't short on potential. The location is phenomenal. But the leadership? Absent. If the manager's idea of hospitality is "there's nothing we can do," then perhaps it's time to find someone who actually can. Until that happens, River and Fort will remain nothing more than a wasted opportunity -- and a cautionary tale for anyone looking to celebrate something important. read more

This restaurant is beautiful - there's several areas to choose from to sit....two floors inside and 3-4 different outdoor patios. We sat at the upstairs bar. View of the fort and water were incredible! Our brunch was also awesome - we started with the deviled eggs and French onion soup, I recommend both! For our main meals, we had the French dip sandwich and the tuna poke bowl. The tuna bowl was fresh and flavorful. The French dip was everything you'd expect a French dip to be....the thick cut fries were fantastic. The only thing we had that wasn't stellar was our first drink called the aspen....it wasn't bad, it just wasn't anything to write home about. I hardly give out server accolades and the fact that I can't remember my servers name is killing me. It starts with an M and rhymes with serve you, I think. She was great and deserves a raise! We ran into this place while wedding venue touring. The location is sick. It's right across from the water and San Marcos fort. So that means you absolutely MUST sit outside. Pricing was pretty fair, especially for being in St. Augustine. I did the French dip sandwich. Meat was tender and the au jus was soo good. It wasn't too salty and had a great taste. The bread was both firm and forgiving. The fries were great too. The ranch is unique with dill and cucumber in it, but I liked it. My beautiful fiancé ordered the salmon. I'm a harsh critic of salmon since I think I make the best salmon in the world. I'd say, this was still pretty solid. The texture of the rice was great too This is a must visit. Like, it didn't come up on recommendations but it was great. I really only have one knock on the place. Serve some kind of bread before the meal. We are locals and have been wanting to come here to check it out after hearing rave reviews from others about the stuffed NY strip. We did not have time for the steak yesterday BUT we got a o walk right in and find plenty of seating at the bar on the lower level. One of the most enjoyable surprises is that it was a very very breezy day, and the breeze carried off from the coast into the bar area . Because the doors are completely open when you sit at the bar, it feels like you're outside, but you're under plenty of shade. If you do not want to be in the outdoor breeze, you can sit on the inner bar area. We decided on the Korea style sticky ribs and calamari. Calamari in this town is hit or miss-mostly a miss. By far this is the best I have had. (The calamari at A1A brewery is over priced and underwhelming. Don't not order) However here the calamari was very delicious to me because they did have about 1/4 as tentacles. The batter used is a super thin beer batter so you get just the right amount of breading. A neat surprise was that they bartered and fried strips of sweet and colorful bell peppers. The very generous portion given the price. We also ordered the Korea ribs. They were fall off the bone and not spicy at all. We will order these every time we come fe now on! The plate they used to serve it was super hip. The only thing that was a pass was the plating of cole slaw underneath the rib stack. What happens is that the ribs melt down on top of the slaw and then at the bottom you have a white sauce mixed with rib sauce. Hey chef-you are thinning the sauce of your delicious ribs because the bottom rib touches the slaw. How about nothing underneath? The rose was expensive at $12 a glass. Mic Light on draft was only $5. To show this is a very elevated experience, you are served with a heavy cloth napkin and heavy silverware. Super classy!! Loved this touch. I watched the wait staff at work and the managers while eating. They are all hustling and making sure that the guest experience is on point. Great location for this restaurant - parking a is a bit limited so plan time to look for parking - since the Fort (Castillo) is right across the street. The hosts were super accommodating when we made the reservation for the evening time. The food was pretty good - the appetizer were great - the ribs were very good; the fried calamari were a bit too chewy for my taste. Drinks were pretty good and the NY Steak was perfect - pink inside ....the Key-lime crème brûlée was delicious. Our waitress was great also. The building has modern costal look and was very comfortable and clean. I didn't get to see it cause it was pretty cold at night - and we had the boys with us; but it looks like they had a roof top area which I am sure has great views of the fort. We were seated 3 or 4 minutes later in a beautiful outdoor table overlooking the town, the fort and the bay and surrounded by stunning foliage. Friendly, attentive waiter asked if he could start us with a drink and would we like some cheesey garlic bread? I asked if bread was included with the meal, no it is an extra charge. Bad start, don't try and sneakily get us to order something that's usually free but you charge for. Waiter very nice but also kept calling us "you guys", guess it's a generational thing. Husband ordered on tap beer, the taps weren't working. Deviled Eggs appetizer was ok, had a relishy filling not expected. Corn + crab soup tasted good, but not strong curb or crab flavor. Catch of day Grouper was grilled and seasoned nicely. Ciopino was tasty. Apple Galette was ok, crust very thick, some apples not peeled and inconsistent texture. The ambiance was intimate, dinner lit, but still had the upscaled feeling of a nice restaurant. A bunch of people got the short ribs and they were an absolute hit. Tender, fall off the bone, fork tender- I had a bite and almost asked someone for their leftovers... I got the cannon ball shrimp and the best salad and the portions were HUGE. I could only finish 2/3 of my meal and everyone had leftovers. The server was unfortunately hard to flag down. It seemed like she was either newer or they maybe should've had another server at our party but they rang up an extra entree that was sent back, and then proceeded to still charge us for it. From the time we got our bills to the time we were able to leave was about 25 minutes because we had to explain what had happened and then wait while they adjusted the bill in the system. Not sure what happened at this spot. First off, the astetics of this restaurant / bar are very nice. It's multiple levels with really nice patio seating. Didn't go inside, but the bar looked nice. Stopped in around 5PM on a weekday and the place was pretty empty. Went to the top floor patio, and that's basically where it ended. There was only one other couple on the top patio and three different servers walking around. Got almost no service. Got a menu after almost 10 minutes of waiting. Waited another 10 minutes, no one helped us and we left. It wasn't just that the service was bad, it was the fact they were empty with plenty of people working.
