After not visiting the dentist for years, I decided to give River Dentistry a try after being highly recommended. Best decision! The entire staff at River Dentistry is awesome! All of the assistants are friendly and very informative. Jose is incredibly nice, patient, and informative. I've been seeing Dr. Charles since March of this year and since moment I made my appointment was so easy they worked around my schedule when I came in to my appointment the staff was very helpful very professional and the place looks amazing but the most important thing they make you and treat you as a human being! I've been there about four times and every time I leave I leave happy with a great smile knowing that I mention? That their rates are very affordable. Finding a new dentist is always a weirdly stressful part of moving to a new city, so I'm really glad I found River Dentistry and Dr. Huang. This is definitely the best dentist's office I've been to. The entire staff is friendly, and the assistants were genuinely concerned for my comfort when I had some trouble with the X-rays. Dr. Huang really takes the time to chat and get to know you while he works, and he's good at his job. I hadn't seen a dentist in a while before going here, and the staff was very non-judgmental. Great service... as soon as I came in for my dental cleaning I was seated,to start my cleaning .The service was superb, from the front office receptionist to the dental assistant and what a great job on my X-rays, and cleaning. I haven't been to the dentist in over a year since I've been moving around for my job. I recently moved to LA and was looking for a dentist that was in-network and accepted my insurance (United Healthcare). This was one of the locations super close to my apartment, had good reviews, and open late (until 7pm on weekdays and they are even open on weekends!) so I decided to give it a try. It's a tiny little office in the Westin Bonaventure Hotel downtown (on the left side of the escalators if you enter on Figueroa) but staff is amazing from Receptionist (Vanessa) to Dr. Huang! Everyone was super friendly and nice. Came in for my annual exam/cleaning and it was quick and painless. Dr. Huang and his dental assistant were both very gentle and professional and informative on top of that! They kept me updated with the status of my teeth while they were examining it which I really appreciated. I have a follow-up appointment next month and I can't wait to be back! Just got my last 2 wisdom teeth pulled. This is my second visit to River Dentistry, the first was for X-rays and cleaning . Everything has been on point each visit, and having my wisdom teeth extracted was no exception. Painless! I was so nervous due to my last experience getting my other 2 wisdom teeth extracted at another dentist, but Dr. Charles was understanding and reassuring. My appointment was at 12 and I walked out before 1.. and he and the dental assistant were patient and took their time. Antibiotics and Ibuprofen prescriptions were given after. I have been going to doctor Charlie for several years now. He has always been super-helpful and kind. I love his bedside manner, and the quality of his dentistry work is unparalleled. I have had crowns from a number of places over the years and by far Dr. Charlie's crows have been the best they are shaped like a real tooth. You can hardly tell the difference, most crows I have seen are hand shaped and as a result have a artificial look to them. I loved the nurses they were great the actual dentist though is just alright. Since I was a little kid I've never had the most perfect teeth so it's kind of a insecurity of mine. I had no issues with my teeth other than build up which is cleared up with one cleaning and as he was cleaning he just kept gasping like I had a tiny family just chilling living in my mouth and hiding behind my teeth. It made me feel pretty horrible about myself. other than that though everything else was great! The nurse made me feel a lot better and that I wasn't the most disgusting human being on the planet so that was nice. I used to cringe everytime I went to the dentist but coming here is a pleasure. Besides the beautiful and convenient location the staff makes you feel comfortable and at ease. Dr. Huang is patient, answers questions, and is careful to explain anything he does so you dont feel confused or nervous about any procedure. I have never posted a review but my experience has promoted me to do it. I was neglecting my dental health for a few years but decided as a New Years resolution to see a dentist. I actually followed through! I was so nervous but Dr. Huang was calming and explained everything step by step. When I say it was a painless teeth cleaning, it really was painless! And I had a lot of cleaning needed. We came up with a plan to fix my 2 cavities and included fixing my old seals. It was extremely kind of them to do so since I don't have dental insurance. It's very affordable! $125 for exam, X-ray, cleaning. I cannot recommend it enough. I am very happy with the work I've had done and will continue to go there for all dental concerns. I spent many years not taking care of my teeth and have been more or less shamed by multiple dentists during consultations. Upon going to see Dr Huang and his awesome tech Laura, I was made to feel comfortable and helped along the way to fixing my smile. They work fast and are a joy to be around. I however won't be going back. The front desk women either just don't like me or are plain rude. (Didn't take it personally til my gf commented how rude they were to us) On top of that my quotes for work somehow keep doubling when it comes time to actually have said work done. This is my first review-- I signed up for Yelp this afternoon right after my appointment at River Dentistry, because my experience was so unpleasant I felt compelled to help others avoid it. To be fair, I went in for Zoom whitening, so only saw the dentist for three minutes right at the beginning and can't speak to his quality as a doctor. After he left, my appointment became a comedy of errors. I was prepped by a trainee who had absolutely no idea what she was doing. No idea where things were, how to apply the materials to gums and teeth, or how to run the machine. A more senior assistant was there too, overseeing her, but mostly correcting things she had already done wrong. In my mouth. Verbatim: "No, not that gel, we don't know how old it is"; "No, you have to dry the gums before you put on the gel. They're not dry" (this after the gel was on). Annoyed, harried tone. All the while instructing the trainee on what should be told to the patient, while never actually addressing me. It's hopefully the closest I'll ever come to feeling like a lab rat. Honestly I felt bad for the trainee. She seemed stressed out, and she should never have been asked to perform tasks she hadn't been adequately trained for. That said, she did a terrible job of covering my gums, which meant that bleach went everywhere, which burns. When I told her about this, she poked around with a swab, spreading it and making it much worse. Then she ran and got the other technician, who looked at my gums for about a second, threw a tiny bit more paste on, said "you're fine" and walked out. My gums were in serious pain during the whitening and were bleached and puffy after. I've had Zoom before-- a little tingling is normal. This wasn't that. After a while my gums sort of went numb and I just decided to wait it out, hoping that at least the bleaching would work. At the end of the second session the technician wiped off the bleach, dramatically exclaimed "wow, your teeth got really white!" and ushered me out. I was confused because every time I've had Zoom in the past it's been three sessions. I asked about this at the front desk, and was told that the doctor thinks two sessions produce optimal results. And "we use really fresh bleach, so we don't need as much." Um, what? Minimal googling reveals that that is not a thing. Zoom is a manufacturer; they produce the gel and include enough for four 15 minute sessions per patient. Their protocol is three sessions, with a fourth at the doctor's discretion. Every other dentist follows this, as far as I can see. I'm guessing this is a time and money saving measure on the office's part. It sucks. If my teeth were super white, I guess I'd be ok with it, but they're not. They're about the same as they were, with some whitening toward the bottom. They're kind of ombre. I wondered why this office required payment for the full treatment when you book an appointment. Now I know. Avoid. read more

River dentistry is a great place to get dental work done in DTLA - The price is reasonable, the staff is friendly, and Dr. Huang is very professional. I generally don't like going to the dentist - I've had many bad experiences in the past (more due to my own dental problems than the dentists themselves), so going to any dentist still induces my residual fear. However, when Dr. Huang first examined my teeth, he was really gentle with them! The procedure he performed on me was relatively painless and he would warn me every time I would feel a little pain. First, started with my documents that I spent time with pre-filling out not being found, when they were half of the information was not pre filled then when the dentist try to do the annual cleaning he could not because the equipment was not working properly in any of the exam rooms, therefore, I could not get my annual teeth cleaning even though I will need a deep cleaning and other services which I had to schedule for two additional visits this was an inconvenience regardless if my insurance paid for this visit or not which I feel my insurance should not. I do have to say the staff was friendly and the dentist was friendly and made you feel comfortable and best of all did not try to sale you on Services you don't need. I didn't have insurance, but Dr. Charlie is so nice he did the service (extracted that amn wisdom tooth), I'm paying in payments in house meaning my credit isn't getting ruined, and he even was nice enough to open off hours and come see me for my emergency . And now I'm out of pain and will be back for my checkup exam. Highly recommend him, and it's so awesome that he's located inside the Westin Bonaventure, it's such a nice hotel inside, that I forget that I'm coming to visit the Dentist! My husband and I have been regular clients at River Dentistry since 2013 and our experience has been consistently great! I've gone through a full Invisalign course with them (best price in town and I really mean it, believe me, I am very thorough and have compared a ton of offers from dental offices all over LA), had fillings done, had bonds done, multiple cleanings... and Dr. Charlie did a flawless job each time! Painless too! I used to truly dread a visit to the dentist in the past and I know what it feels like to end up with a filling in the wrong tooth... don't ask, sad story... So I do appreciate Dr. Charlie's kindness and patience explaining the procedure in such detail that it becomes impossible not to understand, and making sure we both are on the same page about what's happening and the expected results. Plus his skills are superb, it goes without saying. My husband is currently nearing the final stage of his Invisalign and has his teeth Zoom-whitened (another best price in town). My husband's schedule is very difficult to work with, but reception (Vanessa in particular, she will become your friend!) has always been able to comfortably accommodate us. Everyone at River Dentistry is very-very sweet, helpful and professional. Hello to everyone that's read it, My name is Niv and I'm a patient of Dr Huang's for 10 years, so in this point I call him DR Charlie. This clinic for me is an example of excellency and quality of service. I know doctor Charlie since his days as a dental student in NYC, while I was fresh to New York with big dreams and very little money. In one of my research for an affordable dental clinic, I found myself at the NYU dental care clinic. Dr Charlie was a young dental student over there, he looked like a teenager, but he was very friendly, pleasant and really professional . He's persona was shining at that clinic and let's be honest, most of the patients there, were very difficult cases of homeless, drugs users and people that haven't seen a dentist for a long time including myself. As a foreign with a big accent and probably not so good english at the time, that was very helpful to communicate with him about my dental needs and he made it very clear to me. Everything I know about maintaining a healthy mouth and dental hygiene, I learned from him. He sealed my teethes and did a great deep cleaning that I still remember and ever since I have no cavities, which is really incredible. Doctor Charlie, is a really kind person, he care about you first and about your oral health above everything and not about your money like a lot of other dentists, that practice probably not from the right reasons. A lot of my friends have gone to see him since and we all are big fans of river dentistry. Dr. Charles is the best dentist I've ever seen. He is kind, patient, and skilled. Those qualities are very important to me since I needed a lot of work done and really had been put off by the bad dentist in North Carolina. He always makes sure I'm not in pain even when my appointment is going over the four hour mark(which is super important since I have a high tolerance to local anesthesia). He worked with me to create a treatment plan that was manageable and reasonable. I'm also happy to say I did not feel judged or shamed for my the condition of my teeth. This review is long overdue, but concerns a whitening procedure that I had done at this office. After scheduling an appointment long in advance, I was made to believe that Dr. Huang would actually be performing the whitening treatment. As it turns out, that was not the case, and I never got to meet or see the doctor, nor was he the one performing the treatment. This is disconcerting and misleading, as one pays to obtain the skills and experience of a certain professional, and that professional is the one they are there to see - it's like paying to a see a high-profile musician at a concert and instead seeing a no-name artist. To add insult to injury, on the day of the treatment I was 'forced' to come in at a different appointment time since the doctor would be unavailable at my scheduled slot. I was told over the phone that the doctor needed me to come in earlier, otherwise I wouldn't be able to see him. There was no reason for the last-minute change nor was an apology made for any possible inconvenience. I found this to be completely disrespectful of my own time and busy schedule. It seemed the doctor's time and schedule was far more important than a paying customer's. This office makes a big deal about you cancelling an appointment with enough advance notice, yet they do not extend the same courtesy when the ball is in their court. Their blatant apathy may be due to the fact that you're required to pay upfront to secure any dental appointment and as a result they probably wouldn't care less whether you make it to your session since they already have your money. Of course, the doctor was nowhere to be seen at my appointment, nor any apology given for his absence. Assuming I wouldn't notice, a dental assistant was assigned to perform the entire whitening procedure - I was never told her title, nor did she ever mention her name or take the time to formally introduce herself or ask how I was doing - an extremely off-putting first impression. Throughout the treatment, she was very unfriendly and uncaring, wholly enthusiastic and seemingly in a race to get everything done and over with as quickly as possible, with little regard for quality or results. Prior to scheduling the treatment, I was told over the phone that a dental pre-inspection would be a critical component of the whitening process and would help determine the condition of my teeth and assess whether I'd be a good candidate for whitening and thus benefit from the treatment. In fact, this pre-inspection was stressed above all else. However, come the day of the treatment, nothing of the sort was ever done. My unnamed assistant never cared to inspect my teeth before the treatment, nor addressed my whitening expectations or likely results. I found this to be worrying and unprofessional. In fact, she was extremely uninformative throughout, never letting me know what to expect or how long the individual sessions would last. Never once did she check up on me between sessions to determine how I was doing or inspect my progress - I was figuratively and literally (they turn off the lights and close the door) left in the dark for the entire procedure. I felt much like a wait-and-see lab experiment sitting there in a creepily sterile, darkened room. Of course, as much as you'd like to, it's very hard for you to say much of anything with all of the dental inserts stuck in your mouth. Additionally, the treatment felt extremely rushed. Assistants and other technicians would only come in at the very last moment, ready to take off the equipment as fast as possible, much like mechanics changing a tire at a pit-stop during a car race. They seemed more concerned about beating the clock, than actually taking the time to address any qualms or talking to you like a human being. I felt almost like a numbered part on a robotic assembly line, being 'disconnected' like I was some kind of machine that was undergoing maintenance. Above all else, the treatment itself was extremely underwhelming. I noticed no visible differences in the whiteness of my teeth. I've had many whitening sessions in the past at other offices, and all have produced visible results directly after treatment. River Dentistry was quite possibly the worst whitening treatment I've ever had and my teeth didn't even seem a shade lighter. Like a previous reviewer had mentioned, this office takes no responsibility for their mistakes, nor they do have the courtesy or professionalism to offer an apology (for example, when trying to reschedule you at the last minute). Many of the staff I encountered were extremely unenthusiastic, stoic and disinterested in offering satisfactory service to their patients. I would genuinely recommend avoiding this office at all costs. The photos on their Yelp account make them appear like a full-fledged, high-tech dental operation, yet they're essentially a hole-in-the-wall, small, cramped suite in a large hotel complex. read more
