I don't understand all the great reviews on this place. As a bar I'm sure it's fine but as a restaurant it's far less than spectacular. We've gone 4 times in the hopes that maybe our experiences were not the norm - but really with 4 tries I guess we'll have to accept it - this place does not rock. Let's start with the waitress with the scary eyeliner who sneaks up behind you then screeches! And who didn't mention the specials to us, but we heard her tell another table about them as our food was coming out. Food? Well once the buffalo chicken dip was magnificent, then twice it was a soggy, greasy mess. Burgers - bland. The chili on the chili nachos was straight out of a can (c'mon folks - chili is not rocket science). Smoking is forbidden inside, of course, but they're given a lovely spot to hang outside - right under the window in the dining room. So as a bar - fine. As a restaurant, don't go there. I knew it! After the NYT April 2013 review ,the place had difficulties handling the new inflow of new customers. Food still us very good but the place seems out of control. Last night most if the beer taps were dry and the serve was rude . On Sunday nights the kitchen shuts down at 8pm and sometimes at 9pm. It would be very appreciated if a sign was placed at the entrance stating the kitchen is closed. Sitting at the bar and having a few drinks and then being told the kitchen is closed is not a way to treat your hungry customers. Hopefully the place will learn how to manage their new success . Owners need 2 be present more often so the ship can be righted. read more

I usually go here and have a great experience but my last time out we got the French Onion Soup and while it looked incredible it tasted so bad it didn't even taste like it was trying to be French Onion Soup. You can call yourself a Grille instead of a Grill but that doesn't mean you smarter than the guy who invented the French Onion Soup. River Grille is a good pub, but not a great restaurant, and their cooks shouldn't be trying so hard. Got some catfish sandwich too. Not great. Thought to give it a tried since we were around that area. The service was great, quick and very attentive. The restaurant seemed to be packed with a lot of local crowds. Its a local place to hang out for people to grab a beer with apperitizers. Food was just okay and comes with large portion. So good. Total dive bar but always packed!! It is the go to bar by locals. It can get loud and crowded at times but it's a bar!! The staff is always very friendly and accommodating. We usually go about once a month for ladies night out. The food is always a hit! Wings are good. Mussels are good. Burgers are good. Salads are good. You just can't go wrong. The food is absolutely amazing. Everything was so perfectly prepared and delicious. We got pork chops and ribs and they were just wonderful. For dessert we got an apple crisp which came with ice cream and whipped cream. It just had oatmeal mixed in with apples and no crust which is a big plus for me. Just loved everything about food. Unfortunately, I just left the River Grill... I set out for a fun night with friends. We got the River Grill, had dinner, delicious drinks, and a great waitress, Laura. Despite the $200 bill, we continued to order drinks, when the manager approached our table and told us she "needed it" and had already "given us the eye few times".... We literally still had drinks on the table. Now granted there were maybe two parties waiting... But I've never experienced such poor customer service from a manager. It's a shame.... I was going to give River Grille a 4-star review and then had to think, why? It's so good, the service is great and it's got a good bar area. Trust me, upon entering, you don't think much. It looks like a little old abandoned house next to an auto body shop. But don't let that fool you. They have some of the best food and a full bar with lots of TVs and seating. While the dining area isn't huge, there's definitely enough room for a neighborhood joint. Some of my favorite foods here are their french onion soup. Probably some of the best I've had full of chunky onions, sweet broth and an enormous amount of gooey cheese. I'm drooling just thinking about it. Their wings are delicious, and come in a variety of flavors. The cheesesteak, burgers and chicken sandwiches are also so terrific and come on great tasting bread. Full of flavor and huge portions. I could eat their fries all day too. You can catch any game here when it's football season and they have a pretty good selection of beer on tap. The service has always been pleasant and on point. They tired to charge me $1,154.15 for my $34 meal today!. I handed my card to the waitress to pay my $34 check, who went away to swipe at her terminal. Moments later, the waitress came back saying the card had been declined. This was followed by a call from my bank, while the waitress was there, asking if I had just made a purchase for $1,154.15 at River Grille!! - this raised a security alert with the bank, hence the decline. I paid the check with cash under the banks instructions. A few moments later I received a text and email from the bank with the transactions details of the fraud attempt, which I showed the waitress. I used to describe this place as the best bar in town, now I tell people it is my favorite place to eat in town. If you remember Towne Tavern as a place where you could drink PBR and get too rowdy, you might want to reintroduce yourself to the River Grille. You would probably never think that the best calamari in town would be at a bar, but seriously try it. Try anything because it is literally all good. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things from the menu because I really do not know how this place is getting 4 and 5 stars. For what it is, it does have a simple bar restaurant quaintness to it. The bartender and servers were also responsive and pleasant - keep up good work people. If you like a large beer selection, then this place will definitely fit the bill. Their selections of wines are thin (at best). I asked for a beer and did not like it so they replaced without issue or charge - good job. With our parties, there were 8 different entrees and three different appetizers. Appetizers The nachos were horrible and hideous - OMG. They were greasy and absolutely terrible. What the heck kind of cheese what that. As a tablem we left over half of them becasue we just could not eat any more - for the taste. The Spring rolls were pretty good. Spring rolls are supposed to have a lighter crust and these very heavy but had a very pleasant taste to them. Classic buffalo wings were also ordered for the table. They were just ok - decent flavor and a good texture. Dinners - Two people had the mussels for dinner. They are listed as appetizers but the size are more than plenty for an entree. I was told they were really good ! Two different types of burgers were ordered and I was told that they were very tasty. They also were more than ample in size. I had the St Louis Ribs - I asked if they were good before ordering them and I was assured that they were really good. I guess my problem is that when I order barbeque ribs I expect real barbeque ribs. These ribs were hideous and terriblle. I guess people around here dont know better, but slathering a tangy sauce on ribs does not make for good ribs. They were dry and tasted terrible - OMG. I love ribs and know from what I speak. These will go on the list of worst ribs I have ever had - ever. i will say that the service was good, the place was clean and they are pretty well organized. I will also say that some dishes were good but unfortunately some dishes were hideous. Such inconsistency demands a buyer be careful what you order sticker on it. I thoroughly enjoy this place - it use to have somewhat of a trashy reputation but it has greatly improved! The food is awesome, the beer selection on tap is great, and it is an all around comfortable atmosphere. Deck out front for smokers/outdoor seating in the summer. Word to the wise - do not go there on thanksgiving eve if you did not go to Chatham high or do not know many people from Chatham. I work in the Short Hills area and a co-worker suggested we go here for dinner one idle Tuesday night during the Summer. Doesn't look like much when you drive up..very questionable location..and parking is a nightmare. All that to say, I have been back numerous times since then. THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!!! The decor is simple and I actually love that you can still detect the structure of a house. It reminded me a little of Bogeys in Whippany. 1. The Food is Outstanding!!!! Whoever is in that kitchen really knows what they are doing and cares about what they are doing. Portions are generous. Prices are reasonable and the food is flavorful and fresh! Some high points: - Wings - Simple basic wings. No crazy breading. No stingy portions. I get them plain with a couple of their great sauces on the side. They must rely on the flavor of he wings and these wings are GREAT. - Burgers - WOW WOW WOW. Delicious! Perfectly cooked and a wide variety of fresh toppings. - Ribeye and Salmon were fantastic! The Garlic Butter sauce should be its own food group. 2. I don't know what some reviewers are complaining about as I have always had STELLAR service here. The servers are always friendly and attentive without being annoying. They make suggestions for their favorite items for us to try and always are happy to take my special requests. 3. It's crowded and noisy Nights and weekend's do you expect?? It's a bar that has great food and people having fun. In the midst of a Friday night happy hour, there are table of families and couples having intimate dinners, all sitting intimately close in the dining area. When I moved to Chatham two years ago, I was afraid I wouldn't find any good, local bars in the area. Boy, was I mistaken. This isn't just a good bar, this is a GREAT bar. Great because of the food, the prices, and the fact that it's down the street from me! Whenever I'm looking to unwind, I stop in for a drink which always ends up with me also having a bite. I'm the type of person who opts for a mix of appetizers over entrees and I am absolutely in love with the nachos, the sliders and the truffle mac n cheese. The only entrees I've had are the penne vodka and the big blue cheeseburger which were excellent. The portions are generous and the quality outstanding. The space itself has a bar with high tables on the first level and a seated dining area on the second level. There are TVs throughout the space as well. There are also some tables outside the front of the bar on this small terrace and out in a back patio type area adjacent to the parking lot. The staff has always been very friendly and attentive. Stopped by here for a drink after visiting my fiance's family who live in Chatham on a Friday night. It was pretty crowded but we were able to get seats with people leaving. It's a cool vibe with a live musician playing. The beer selection is decent and the service is good. The bartenders were generally attentive and quick to service. read more

This is our go to restaurant when we want casual food and the bar 'n grill atmosphere. Everything we have ordered was at least very good in flavor. Some items like the onion soup are hard to beat-and I mean anywhere! I have ordered their cheese steak sandwich multiple times and feel if Philadelphians could they would come here. If you come here expect it's a bar with some tables. Sound level can get a bit high later. The food is the best this location has ever seen. Typical bar favorites are just the beginning of this menu.
