Delicious lunch on the expansive deck with views of the Tomoka River. I hadn't been there in a while - my mom used to love to come here - so my friend and I drove up from Port Orange. She ordered the peel 'n eat shrimp - 1 lb. for $21 - what a bargain! Beautifully cooked large shrimp. She took half home for dinner. I had the mahi fish sandwich with rice & beans. We split the onion strings/straws - so thin and a delicious Cajun ranch dip served with them. She took take away for her hubby of the jambalaya, rice & beans and more onion strings. Nice outside deck on the river. This place was recommended by locals for the best Gator Bites. They didn't disappoint. Shrimp and grits were okay at best. (Shrimp was fine, it was the grits that seemed a day old and microwaved). Poboy Oyster Sandwich was good, but my wife ended up eating the oysters and leaving the bread. I don't remember our waitresses name but she was a zombie. No personality, barely going through the motions, and gave us the impression that we were a burden. One bad server can ruin an average meal. Great service, yummy food, and you get a lot for your money. The margaritas were $4 and it wasn't even happy hour! We sat overlooking the river and the ambience was great. The restaurant was busy but it didn't feel crowded and our waiter was very attentive and dropped by many times to check in, despite being so far out on the deck. Driving from Ohio we found this fun restaurant. The atmosphere was tropical and our server Jenny had a fab attitude! I am gluten free and they had a specific gluten free menu and a designated frier for the fries. They lost the 5th star because of the squirrels on the deck and on table tops. read more

We frequent this location on many occasions for the most part a pleasant visit, however on our last visit not so pleasurable. I had the dry rubbed smoked wings that were cold and way over cooked, my wife had the grilled shrimp with mashed potatoes with hush puppies and had to send it back because it was ice cold. My friend had the brisket that was dry and tasted like an old shoe, her husband had the $17:00 pork chop and said it was just OK. Our server was pleasant and courteous although he did mention that the kitchen was struggling that night. We have eaten here several times, and I have to admit the atmosphere is a big draw. It's a great place to bring visitors; comfortably casual to to your Sunday best, you will feel comfortable here. On a nice day, sit outdoors and enjoy the river breezes and the upscale version of an old Florida fish house. it's crowded on holidays, so we try to get in early. The hush puppies and cole slaw may not take center stage, but they are invariably really good. I always order fish, and especially enjoy flounder, but there are vegetarian and meat lover entrees too. Never had a meal I didn't enjoy. Service an Ambience was fine. Food was very mediocre and not worth the price. Classic theme of restaurant using location over looking the food. The ribs were very tiny and goad more meat than bone. The pulled pork that came with it on the sampler looked like dry hash browns and had to drown in sauce to hide the dryness. And the clam chowder is obviously microwaved. Upon entering, we were greeted by a friendly hostess and soon escorted to our table on the beautiful deck. After a few minutes, other expected members of our party showed up. There was even an additional person which necessitated a change in table seating. This wasn't a problem at all. The team was very accommodating. We ordered an appetizer of crab dip. It was served with garlic toast. The portion size was very decent. The dip wasn't bad, but it also wasn't memorable. We ordered several entrees including the River Bluff Combo. It's a combination of fish, shrimp, and scallops. Again, for me, the meal was neutral. This restaurant is a beautiful, local treasure with an amazing deck and view of the Tomoka River! Visited 7/3 at 3pm; restaurant not busy. My friends and I all had dined here before but had not been back in a couple years. This review is very similar of Colton's from a week ago. Order #1 of Pulled Pork Sandwich came with too little BBQ sauce. A request for more brought out a larger cup with sufficient sauce. Why not provide enough sauce the first time? Side order of Tomato & Cucumber Salad had one cherry tomato and the dressing had no flavor. Order #2 Shrimp Scampi produced a bowl of dry spaghetti with shrimp on it. It was returned so that the scampi sauce could be added. Why not provide enough sauce the first time? Order #3 Jambalaya came out lukewarm warm. Sent back to heat it up. Ordered the Sunshine cake which is made with oranges. I could tell by the menu description that this was not the same cake that I had the last time. They added frosting which just ruined it for me. I loved the previous version because it like a sponge cake and reminded me of the Orange Chiffon cake they have in Hawaii. Overall the taste of the food was good. Yesterday was our first time dining at the RiverGrille on the Tomoka in Ormond Beach. We visited late in the afternoon during the quiet part of a weekday. We noticed the nice grounds on the river with a huge parking lot. This place must be very popular. We chose to dine outside with a nice view of the river along with a cute very tame squirrel. Inside or out it is a very rustic place with gator decor and a large welcoming bar. My wife had the stuffed flounder with crabmeat. It was good along with a small salad and fries. I ordered the jambalaya. Nice and peppery with plenty of fresh shrimp, chicken and small pieces of andouille sausage. The dish needed more rice to accompany the vegetables and sauce Our Waiter's name was Deeter. He was very friendly, personable and helpful. A good server completes the dining experience. All in all a pleasant dining experience, we will be back. read more

I ordered the key lime chicken and shrimp, shrimp was over cooked but edible, the "jerk chicken" was more like jerky chicken.. waiter never came back to check on us, by the time I waved him down I had chewed away at half of the 1/4" TOUGH chicken.. he told me because I had eaten so much there was nothing he could do. To me, the place looked like a rustic restaurant in New Orleans. The restaurant overlooks the river and so it has a nice and body outdoor sitting area. The inside is nice also. . . . I ordered the Ormond Cream Pop and it was. Nice and refreshing. It was also a frozen drink. This drink looked and tasted good. I was glad I had it. . . . The Scallops Seafood Platter was what I ordered and it was a big meal. I was given the choice of how I wanted the scallops and two sides. I got onion rings. They were thin, crunchy, and good. My second side was hush puppies. They tasted great I liked them. I was happy with the meal. . . . The service was so friendly and nice. The food and atmosphere were both good. Like Fun Spot, this place is huuuuuuuge. Unlike Fun Spot, they have great food! We arrived around 3:00 on a Sunday for an early dinner and decided to try and sit outside and eat. It was August hot and it wasn't bad at first but it does catch up with you. The views from the deck seating are great though. My dad remembered he ate here a few years ago and loved the shrimp, so he ordered those for his meal. He definitely enjoyed them and carried on about them over and over, but he does that with a lot of stuff. I ordered the whole platter done cajun style. I tried to get it bayou style but they couldn't do that on the platter but could on other items so I was kinda confused by it. I just switched and got it cajun style. The cajun lacked flavor and spice, but the shrimp, scallops and fish were all good. I believe the fish was Tilapia and it was excellent for such a cheap piece of fish. The red beans and rice and tomato cuke salad were great sides too. However, I felt for something described as a whole patter, there could have been a bit more of the main course. The wife ordered fish and chips and the fried fish was out of this world delicious. Wow! The breading/batter was super thin and crispy AF the entire time. There was a pretty big portion too which meant she couldn't finish it which meant I finished it which meant I was stuffed. The fries were nothing to write home about, but still better than Burger King fries. For Dessert, my dad ordered the chocolate cake and woofed it down like you should with chocolate cake. We split the Florida Sunshine Orange Cake and OMG what a delicious F'ing cake! I think it's something that comes from somewhere else as I think we've had it at another place too. All I gotta say is if you like oranges and you like cake and you like smiling, then get this cake every time you see it. The $4 HH Margarita and Planters Punch were both good for the price too. It's always nice when there's a good drink special and they don't gouge you for a nice drink. It's not gonna win this place a Michelin Star, but that's not why you're here anyway. This seems like it would be a really cool hangout. There's a nice bar inside and one outside too (I think the outside is named Three Toed Petes and I'm sure there's a hilarious story behind that name). There are boat docks on the river you can tie off and head up the steps to the restaurant. It's not too far up the road from Rt. 40 (Grenada) so if you're in Daytona/Ormand and want to escape the crowds, put it in your GPS and drive out here. We arrived at 8:45 pm on a Saturday and were surprised to find a large, old South style nicely decorated restaurant with two large rooms and outside seating on the river. Seafood and sides were very good and prices were reasonable. This is a very cool restaurant set along the river. It has a large deck where you can sit and enjoy the views while dining or waiting for your table. It is a large restaurant with tables both inside and outside. We went on a Wednesday evening and it was busy. We were told a 45 minute wait which was odd because there were quite a few tables open. Could be the amount of staff or the amount of kitchen staff available. When we were seated our drink and appetizer orders were taken very quickly. Our waitress was very friendly and brought our drinks quickly. We ordered the Asiago crab dip for an appetizer and that was very very good. For our entrees, my son ordered the seafood boil for 1 person and he thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a large portion but he finished all of it. My husband had the jambalaya which he said was good. My daughter had the popcorn shrimp and fries and she ate all of it. I had the crab stuffed flounder with grits and hush puppies. It was ok but not great. I couldn't really taste the crab or the hollandaise sauce on it. The hush puppies were good. The grits were good and I asked for them with cheese. They came with a piece of semi melted cheese on them. Overall, we were pleased with our meals. The setting of the restaurant is what may draw the crowds. read more
