This is RL so of COURSE the decor and environment is sophisticated and lovely. But I was curious whether the food would match the surroundings. One bite into my juicy, flavorful burger convinced me that the RL restaurant is totally legit and not the brand's fancy afterthought. Such addictive fries, too! It's crazy how many times I've walked past this restaurant growing up and always said I have to come here one day.. and that day finally came! A girlfriend and I came during lunch time and I allowed her to choose everything because I wasn't too hungry and I wasn't too sure. She said a friend raved about the espresso martinis so we had to get those. I'm not the biggest fan but it was good. Not as strong as I like it, but my friend sure did feel it haha. I ordered a margarita as well which was better but for the prices of their drinks and their authenticity I would've thought it'd be a better pour. We ordered the house salad which was okay. The star of the show was the escargot as I had never had it before. It was good. Nothing too special in my opinion but not bad. The brioche toast that came with was yummy! Came for lunch - older stuffy crowd so my expectations were low. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the fare - crab salad was fresh and glistening; the homemade Cesar dressing on my Cesar stood out, seafood cooked perfectly. I had just finished shoping at 900 Michigan Ave and was feeling a light urge to snack in an effort to duck out of an unexpected snow storm. Decided to take my chances at RL since it's a workday (I got off early) and snag a spot in the bar area. It worked like a charm!! Ahhhhh. I was promptly greeted, a real menu was handed to me and then was asked if I wanted anything to drink. I had a glass of chardonnay (not pictured here) then decided on the hot lobster rolls appetizer and a side of hand cut fries. A white linen napkin was placed in front of me like a little table cloth and a hot towel with fresh lemon on a plate was handed to me. Gosh, I know it sounds fancy but let me just say how much it made me smile!! My hands were cold and and that hot towel and lemon squeeze just got me feeling like a whole fresh person again. The fella who greeted me was very proper in his manerisms. About mid-way through my meal his shift was ending and he professionally introduced me to the bubbly girl who took over table service. Both were excellent!! There was never a lack of attentiveness to making sure I had everything I needed in front of me. The ambiance is very tradional dark cheery woods, dimly lit lighting and of course Ralph Lauren dinnerware & decor. Yes a bit old school yuppie but also the perfect place to enjoy a superb snack. The lobster itself was wonderful. The portion was smaller than I expected even as an appetizer for $36. However I'd still order it again the next time I stop in. Decided to warm up with a cupuccino before going out to brave the cold outside again. I kinda wished I didn't. Let's just say it was watery and underwhelming. Coffee just isn't their specialty. I've met girlfriends for an indulgent Wednesday dinner. I've had date nights with hubby here. I've even celebrated a birthday with my teens here. RL is one of those places that never gets old and remains a staple as you celebrate life. While you're there - take the time to really look around and take in the amazing artwork collection throughout. The bar is crazy small - so unless you're waiting for a table, better to just get a reservation for dinner and spoil yourself. While we're there - our personal favorite is the get the petite filets. My partner and I have tried for the last 12 years to make sure we have an amazing meal at our favorite restaurant for our anniversary. This year it's a long 4 night holiday weekend in Chicago. We are dinner on Saturday night and it was an amazing experience (as always). Our bar server, John, recommended delicious Chardonnay to start our evening. Our primary server, Jack, was so welcoming and so attentive to us. The food was freaking amazing!! I had the bone in ribeye with creamed spinach. Stephen had his favorite filet mignon with mashed potatoes. Prior to our main courses, we shard the calamari and rock shrimp, a huge delectable crab cake, the BEST Caesar salad I have ever eaten and then the steaks. We finished our meal with the walnut brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce as well as a slice of coconut cake. RL is an experience not to be missed. We travel 700+ miles each year to dine there. If you have a special occasion to be celebrated and remembered, I highly recommend reservations at RL so that they can celebrate your occasion and make you feel so special. I have been here 3-4 times (both with large and smaller groups) in the past few months and the word that comes to mind is consistency. The service is and food are outstanding. My favorite foods so far has been the burger, calamari, dover sole, and pigs in a blanket. The food comes out quickly but the meal felt well paced and I never felt rushed. Some of the offerings are on the pricer side but there is a good spread in terms of prices depending on what you want to spend. I never have had room for dessert but if it's anything like the food, I'm sure it's delicious. Downsides: Valet is only offered for dinner and parking in the area can be pricey/tricky. There are no windows in the main dining area. There is not much of a waiting area (can lead to awkwardly standing by people eating in the bar area). The restrooms are on another level and you have to take an elevator to get there. I'd definitely come here if you are visiting from out of town, want a nice lunch or are celebrating a special occasion. read more

Service is spot on as you would expect and so was the food. Great bread basket with parmesan crisps. I had the RL Burger and not only was it perfectly cooked, but it was up there on one of the best tasting burgers I've had. Well seasoned, moist and perfect accompaniments. Met up with some friends for brunch. I live on the corner from here. I pass by all the time I just never eaten here. Well today was the day. I was greeted promptly and escorted to my table. I didn't feel squeezed into my table nor did I feel rushed while eating. The ambiance was very enchanting. My waiter was very accommodating and didn't lapse in service. I love that they added the shrubbery barrier - it truly feels like you're not in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Michigan Avenue. We had several glasses of their Routestock Pinot Noir - absolutely delicious Pinot and have already started looking for it in the stores! We started with the Pigs in the Blanket - and loved it and the spicy mustard. For entrees - we got the the special Scallops, Veal Milanese, and sauteed garlic spinach. Each was really good. While the food was good, I really was unhappy with the bar scene and the bartenders who see themselves as policing the "first come, first serve" nature of the setting. I called to make a reservation and was told they were booked but dinner was served at the bar in a first come first served method. I arrived and waited until a couple got up from the bar. I rushed over as a woman, who came after me, tried to take one of the two stools. I said "I am sorry, I was here first" and she proceeded to attempt to take the second stool and I said "sorry, I need both for dinner". The bartender stepped in and said "I can't let you take two bar stools" to which I said "I called and was told we could eat at the bar". At this time the lady stepped back and said take the seat. The bartender, in a very snide manner said "well since she is giving it up, I guess you can have it." I was so angry and upset by the treatment shown by the bartender, I could barely taste my food. If there are rules about bar seating, say so. I called ahead and followed what I was told. To be treated with such disrespect at such a heralded restaurant was shocking. read more

I was robbed while dining in the lounge area at RL on December 7th. Someone had taken my purse with everything in it from my chair while we were having dinner. The manager we spoke to was very dismissive and rude to my husband and I. We wanted to see if we could see the security tapes to see who took the bag but they refused to help us. They basically shoved us out the door because they didn't want to deal with the situation. I am completely disgusted by the way we were spoken to and treated that evening. I also had a family member call to try to help and he hung up on her. Extremely unprofessional and cruel to treat customers. My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and it was a lovely experience. 5 stars goes to the incredible food, attentive service, and cool ambiance that made me feel like I was in an English library in the 90s.
