Waiters are conscientious, give solid recommendations and detailed. Drinks are solid and balanced. Salmon Benedict and croque madam are nice but neither were extraordinary, just solid. Plating and presentation was nice. Now let's talk about the space, incredible with attention to detail. Floral arrangements on every table, art work from floor to ceiling and the overall vibe is real. Waiters don't rush you out of here. Service feels very personalized and tailored to your experience. I recommend dining in the main room. Overall considering the experience, great hospitality and vibe the price felt reasonable and worth it. This review has been a long time coming. RL Restaurant is one of our most favorite restaurants to visit when we are in Chicago. The service is spectacular, from the host to the entire restaurant staff, you will not be disappointed. The decor is a Ralph Lauren dream and it is dark and moody, perfect for a date night or an intimate dinner with a few close friends. The cocktails are superb, my personal favorite is the Old Fashioned which is made with the RL private barrel from Woodford Reserve- delicious! Our usual order consists of the pigs in a blanket, but this time we opted for Oysters and the calamari with rock shrimp. Both were great and highly recommended. The table thoroughly enjoyed the Scallops with the lemon butter caper sauce. Personally, I enjoyed my Filet with horseradish cream, it was cooked to perfection and the meat was superb. For sides, we ordered the green beans, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and french fries. They are served family style and there were no complaints about taste. Consistency is key at this restaurant. Sometimes months or even a year go by before we come back to Chicago, and every experience is exactly the same. The food always tastes exactly how we remembered it, we have never had a bad experience. Definitely recommend making a reservation on Open Table and trying this restaurant if you are in the area. read more

Went here lastnight for dinner with my husband. The drinks and food were amazing, however, it was the service that was lacking for me. The hostess offered to check the coats for the party in front of us but never offered to check our coats. When asking for recommendations on the menu the waiter said he didn't know. I asked him basic questions about the drink menu and he seemed uninformed. With the upscale pricing I typically expect the staff to know the menu by heart but this was not the place. Overall-very meh. I love Ralph Lauren but this restaurant missed the mark. read more

We went here for a birthday lunch and it was a decent experience. I don't know what possessed me to go with the fish of the day option but it was the sea bass that came with its own gravy when I went and that little piece you see came out to be $51. While the fish was good, it was also by no means phenomenal in any way and also wasn't very filling. To try to make up for the disappointment we also just got fries and majority of the dessert menu - the coffee ice cream ended up being my favorite. The service was nice and so is the atmosphere, although there are quite of few Chicago restaurants with the same style. Overall this is the place you go with a corporate card to splurge but I wouldn't recommend for any other reason. read more

I enjoyed the oysters and lobster bisque (which was poured table side). Both were excellent and my whole lunch felt so luxe. I have always wanted to try this restaurant for lunch and I had a perfect opportunity as my college roommate was coming into town. This is the perfect fancy lunch place to go with a good friend, your mom, your grandmother, or to celebrate a birthday. I loved the Ralph Lauren classic and elegant decor, and I felt like I was transported back to the 40s. The room was huge with great art, white tablecloths and incredibly attentive and professional staff. Even the restrooms were beautiful, and you actually have to take an elevator down one level to get to them. They give you bread and very delicious crackers on the table before your meal comes. The menu for lunch wasn't huge, but there were great items to choose from. I opted for the crab and avocado salad and my friend had the chopped vegetable salad. I will say that I thought that the portions weren't particularly large and the price was pretty high for my crab salad, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the experience of being in that restaurant. It was bustling with people, but despite that, it was a calm and relaxing experience, and it was easy to have a conversation. The service was impeccable. . We ended with coffee ice cream with chocolate short bread, and tea, which was great way to finish. We each got our own little teapot. This is definitely going to be my go to restaurant for lunch with friends or a special occasion. I'm definitely getting the lobster roll next time. Definitely check it out! read more

If I lived in Chicago, I would be at RL Restaurant every week. Since I'm in Chicago only a few times a year, I general go for the Dole Sole! The lobster bisque is a must have! We had reservations and were seated right away. I was walking with crutches, which is not easy to get around with in a tightly packed dining area. And the doors do not have an accessibility button at the restaurant entrance. You also need to take an elevator to the bathroom up a floor. Just a few things to consider in terms of accessibility. The menu has basic American fare at an inflated price. But I expected this, so I won't hold it against them. The food IS good so at least there's that. The pigs in a blanket are made with wagyu. They were good! I got the lobster bisque and non-alcoholic IPA. I was full just off that. But of course I had to try the dessert. The coconut cake was AMAZING. It's very cozy in the front lounge and a bit more formal behind the hostess. It appeared that some of the staff knew some of the customers well. I'm assuming they were regulars... which is always a good sign. The waiter was amazing. I wish I remembered his name. He had a great sense of humor and knew the menu extremely well. I selected the lobster bisque and a steak Caesar salad. The lobster bisque was my favorite. Very creamy and tasty. It was nice to have a few pieces of lobster as well in it, yet I would have definitely paid for a double portion. My salad was ok. I've had better Caesar salads. The steak was well seasoned but a bit on the rare side for a medium well request. I also split a mashed potato with my friend. The potatoes were entirely too salty. I feel there was an error back of house due to the salt level. Overall we had a good experience and I'll def be back for another bowl of the soup! read more

Upscale American restaurant in an old-fashioned and uniquely decorated environment. I ordered the Crispy Walleye Pike ($31), which was fried with batter. It had a nice crispiness on the outside and the flesh was moderately firm yet delicate. The fish was simple and not too flavorful but still pretty good. It also went well with the tartar sauce. The slaw on the side was a bit too sharp/bitter for me though. While this dish was decent, it was not worth $31. I also tried the Crispy Calamari and Rock Shrimp ($20), which were pretty standard quality- could've been a tad crispier. The Pigs in a Blanket ($15) were tasty with nice little hot dogs in puff pastries and mustard. To drink, the RL Bellini ($14) was nice and refreshing with the prosecco and white peach puree in it. It was a little small though. The place itself is quite fancy and old-fashioned with white tablecloths, lots of interesting portraits and photographs along the walls, an upscale vibe, and a moderately lively atmosphere for a Monday night. We were able to get a reservation just an hour beforehand. Our waiter was super friendly and helpful. However, the service speed was a bit slow (taking our orders, bringing the food, and getting the check). Overall, Ralph Lauren (RL) Restaurant offers high quality American food in an upscale environment but is a bit overpriced (should definitely be a $$$ place). read more

Might be the best Lobster Roll I have ever day! Sorry Boston MA and Milford CT lol. The lobster was fresh and cooked perfectly and the roll/texas toast was buttery and toasted perfectly. Worst fine dining experience I've ever had. Made a reservation, took a 9 pm one so I didn't have to sit on patio (the point of an RL Restaurant is the decor). I was given the worst table in the whole restaurant, first come bar tables were much better. I was bumped by every single server, the serve line to order drinks backed up to my table, every single person walked by me and the picture shows my view. I would have been better off on the patio. I left after 45 mins & it would have been sooner but I couldn't get my waiter (who never gave me his name) to check on me. On top of all of it, the food was mid. Bread was cold, butter hard as ice, my bisque was lukewarm at best. I should have just gone back to Gibson's for my big vacation celebration meal. This is RL so of COURSE the decor and environment is sophisticated and lovely. But I was curious whether the food would match the surroundings. One bite into my juicy, flavorful burger convinced me that the RL restaurant is totally legit and not the brand's fancy afterthought. Such addictive fries, too! I was a bit apprehensive on going here at first. The preppy name of Ralph Lauren. Nothing wrong with that mind you , but as you see in my profile pictures, I am not a preppy guy. My daughter who lives in Chicago loves this restaurant. We were greeted and seated right away during lunch time. We sat outside since the day was very pleasant and warm. Although the inside looked very luxurious and had a warm feeling. The staff was " the most attentive " right on the money they were. The drinks were served right away after we ordered them, appetizers also. I ordered a Turkey Burger and my daughter ordered a Veggie Burger. My TB was excellent ( one of the best I have had ) , my Daughter said her VB was also delicious. As I said the staff was on the button. Clearing plates as we finished with appetizers and our main meal. I asked for jalapeños ( fresh ) on the side....... Out waiter was happy to oblige me . I have to say the staff , everyone that came to the table had a smile on their face and was happy to serve you. I am glad my Daughter took me here for lunch. I would come back here , great food , over the top service, oh yes. Outside seeding is surrounded by a hedge for excellent privacy. You can not see the street and walkers can not see you. Nice touch. It's crazy how many times I've walked past this restaurant growing up and always said I have to come here one day.. and that day finally came! A girlfriend and I came during lunch time and I allowed her to choose everything because I wasn't too hungry and I wasn't too sure. She said a friend raved about the espresso martinis so we had to get those. I'm not the biggest fan but it was good. Not as strong as I like it, but my friend sure did feel it haha. I ordered a margarita as well which was better but for the prices of their drinks and their authenticity I would've thought it'd be a better pour. We ordered the house salad which was okay. My partner and I have tried for the last 12 years to make sure we have an amazing meal at our favorite restaurant for our anniversary. This year it's a long 4 night holiday weekend in Chicago. We are dinner on Saturday night and it was an amazing experience (as always). Our bar server, John, recommended delicious Chardonnay to start our evening. Our primary server, Jack, was so welcoming and so attentive to us. The food was freaking amazing!! I had the bone in ribeye with creamed spinach. Stephen had his favorite filet mignon with mashed potatoes. Prior to our main courses, we shard the calamari and rock shrimp, a huge delectable crab cake, the BEST Caesar salad I have ever eaten and then the steaks. We finished our meal with the walnut brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce as well as a slice of coconut cake. RL is an experience not to be missed. We travel 700+ miles each year to dine there. If you have a special occasion to be celebrated and remembered, I highly recommend reservations at RL so that they can celebrate your occasion and make you feel so special.
